    Watching this episode again in 2020 in the train wearing a mask... And the Skype call with BDM seems strangely normal.
    But I remembered this episode because of BDMs love for the deck! I want to create my own Sidisi deck and this episode really stood out in my mind!
    I am a patron now and I love how far this channel has come! I hope you read this and realize that even the oldest and "worst" looking episodes still have value... Even tho Prophet is banned now.

    In response to the comments of a mono colored deck, I must say that as a mono black player, I don't need to sully my deck with those other lesser colors. I will force you to discard your hand, kill all of your creatures and destroy your lands at my whim. I will finish the game with a massive drain life spell, a horde of zombie tokens, or maybe exiling your entire library. I will happily play the villain at the table, and expect to be every time we play.
    "Greatness at any cost."
    "If there is such a thing as too much power, I have not discovered it"

      ive pesusic - Great profile picture and reply.
      Who said anything about combo (wink)?
      Liliana of the Dark Realms, Cabal Coffers, Nyxthos Shrine to Nyx, Desterted Temple to untap those lands, Crypt Ghast, Nirkana Revanent, Gauntlet of Power, and Caged Sun. That is a list of cards which can ramp up the production of black mana without going infinite. It is not unrealistic to go lethal with an X spell just from the raw power of acceleration.
      Black mages need to make sure we have some combination of Karn Liberated, Scour from Existence, and Spine of Ish Sah in our decks to answer Iona, Shield of Emeria. Serious f**k that card.

    I used to really dislike land destruction when I first started playing. Up until recently I made a ton of green decks so I had tons of mana and wanted to use it. But then I made a zurgo helmsmasher deck, and I'm just sitting there at a table with green blue decks that have 20 mana on turn four, and I'm sitting there with only three mana. That's when I realized that mana is a resource that needs to be kept under control. Because I just sat there that entire game doing absolutely nothing, and when I could even get out a single threat it just got bounced.

    It isn't surprising that the founders of Commander react in such a way with a combo like that. Commander was never meant to be competitive in its nature! It was meant for people with a Vorthos Jenny or Timmy play styles. cEDH is a new branch in the format.
    Regarding mono coloured decks, they are not repetitive. I have a Sisaya deck that is High Priestess of Gaea themed. I have a mono blue Leonardo da Vinci deck. I am also working on a mono red Diochan deck based on pyromancy. It isn't restriction or limiting. It is a challenge. A fun challenge. To say that it is, is a little snobby and disrespectful to mono coloured decks.

      +Alex Li Basalt Monolith, Seeker of Skybreak, Apetto Alchemist, Altar of the Brood. It's fun stuff, I've won plenty of games milling people out.... then one week people tooled their deck to beat mine by locking out the Altar Combo and switched the combo to Laboratory Maniac. In my Upkeep milled myself, Alchemist Refuge Reanimate Lab Maniac win during draw phase. It was funny.

    I have a hard time not building a deck to the best of it's ability, so generally I just pick a shitty commander. Or I set up a motif I have to follow, like my teneb the harvester deck where I can only use farm animals.

    Some comments saying they can build whatever deck they want and make it as powerful as they want. Sure, you can. But I don't have to play with you. In other words, I (and most people in my meta) will gladly play with any stranger, but if the deck is just too oppressive or unfun, we won't play with you. If s*it where you eat, you won't be eating much longer. Just sayin'

  • @FhtagnCthulhu
    @FhtagnCthulhu Před 8 lety

    I am really surprised not to see 'Worm Harvest' in that deck. Similarly doesn't have to ever end up in your hand and you have almost as many lands as creatures. You can just keep casting it as long as you have lands in your hand, and you have a lot of ways to get lands in your hand.
    I love my monocolored decks. I choose my commanders 70% for flavor and lore and some of my favorite characters are mono-colored. I love brewing with odd abilities as well, I'm a believer that restrictions make for more interesting deckbuilding. I don't think a mono-colored deck needs to be any more repetitive or a less interesting build than a three color deck, there are a lot of interesting cards in magic. It is crazy to say that "There are no interesting interactions within just one color." My pet peeve is actually 5 color decks. I have never seen a 5 color deck that wasn't just goodstuff or slivers. (Probably start seeing allies going forward though)

      ***Hey*** depends on if you have a laboratory maniac in the deck. If so, then yes. I don't have one though, and I run Gaea's Blessing to keep myself from milling out. It's like a budget Ulamog, minus the deadly 10/10 or however big he is.

    Except everyone I play with is so painfully analytical that I can't actually manipulate them. Sure random tables I can just bullshit my way through everything but my main group. Can't happen.

    • @thewitchsfamiliar
      @thewitchsfamiliar Před 5 lety

      Well perhaps you can use their nature against them. Analytical as a nature is good - but it also makes them susceptible to careful manipulation. Play them at their own game. Out right politicking doesn't work with these people. You have to use their strength that is also their biggest weakness

    The reason why pros don't play CMD a lot is because it can mis-train your mind to some extent. It's not that they don't like it, they just can't afford to take a hit on their main game type.

    Listening to the backlog on these podcasts, I find it funny that my opinion of the rules committee is only solidified by BDM's anecdote about playing with Sheldon.
    Players who keep playing after a game-winning combo are pure cancer, utterly toxic for the development of the playgroup. Accept your loss, build better, play better, and when you're at the same level as your opponent the game is objectively at it's most fun. Grow up Menery
