    I have only considered the swimmers who have won against Phelps(when Phelps was 2nd*) in either the world championships or Olympics.That is why Hagino, Tom shields, Peirsol, Thorpe are not in the list.

      Yeah - I've copped a lot of flack for pointing that out. See some of the other comments here. Absolutely agree - it's a big omission to leave out the Race of the Century. Thorpe beat Phelps a couple of other times as well in Freestyle events, and Phelps beat Thorpe in a medley event. Both are utter phenomena in the history of international swimming. But to leave Thorpe out of this list was a bit galling.

      Phelps was barely 15 in Sydney and he didn’t swim against Thorpe there. The 200 was relatively new to Phelps in 2004 having only swum it internationally for about a year. The only reason he swam the 200 in Athens was to take on Thorpe and VdH. Many didn’t expect him to even medal in that race. Phelps improved in that race and eventually broke Thorpe’s WR in Melbourne (in textile). The main thing to remember though was this was Phelp’s 5th or 6th best event at the time, whereas it was Thorpe’s bread and butter.

    • @coyote75
      @coyote75 Před 5 lety +7

      Another correction re: your “fact of history,” Thorpe did not beat Phelps “every time.” Look up 2003 World Championships in Barcelona 200 IM. Phelps won. Thorpe finished 2nd. A very distant second. Thorpe never swam the 200IM again. You seem to believe Thorpe beating Phelps in Michael’s 5th best event at the height of Ian’s career is evidence of some sort of overall superiority. Yet Michael stuck with that event (200 free), again not really his bread and butter at the time, improved, and three years after Athens took down Thorpe’s WR. And he broke it in Australia no less. This was before the the introduction of compression and polyurethane suits.

    Biedermann's still holds the world records in the 200m & 400m freestyle, but as they were swum & won with the now banned "super-suits," they are questionable? Previous records that were set by Phelps and Thorpe weren't in band suits.
    Phelps is the Goat (1 of the few times that Goat is overused) and what he has done in swimming will never be equalled.
    And Thorpe has the best looking fresstyle stroke ever & won his 1st World Championship at 15 and what he did between 1998 & 2004 changed swimming forever.

    You left Thorpe out. Yes there is an age gap but so too were some of these admissions, when Phelps was starting to slow down. Not saying Thorpe was a better swimmer, he's my favourite freestyler; but Phelps is the GOAT obviously.

      In that photo you can see Cavic start bending his wrists, finally touching the wall palms flat. Michael chopped with his fingers, out touching him by .01... the result stands, move on.

      The title isn't talking about swimmers who are better than Michael overall, but swimmers who have beaten him in races. And he's been beat a number of times. For example, in London 2012 he actually finished off the podium in the 400m individual medley.
