Athens was the first time MP medaled, but it was not his first appearance at the Olympics: in Sydney 2000, at age 15, he placed fifth in the 200m butterfly.

Funny thing is, is that I’m a diver and used to swim but he still amazes me in everything he’s accomplished
He's known as 'The Golden Boy!'
And then he became the youngest ever male world record holder in the same event less than a year later at the world championships (still 15).

Phelps doing Butterfly is a thing of Beauty & Power in One. I will miss him in 2020. My favorite race of all time-- Olympic swimming-- is the Freestyle Relay win in 2008 over France by .01 or so. Incredible

The butterfly activity is exhausting for the swimmer and a pleasure for the viewer, especially when the race is more than 50m. It requires technique and effort division🏊♂️

It's hard to believe that Athens was 15 YEARS AGO!!!! Imo Phelps in London was the best performance of all time by a single Olympian.

Really interesting to see some swimmers back then were grab starters. I would’ve thought around that time it was well known that track starts were more efficient.
I think it was, but since some of the swimmers, especially the ones who competed in the 2000 Olympics and earlier, were so used to grab starts that they used it at Athens.

I'm spoiled with the videos that give information on who was first, second and third on each split and who won and how close the times were. There were some close races here and it would have been nice to know the time differences.

Not sure if giving his final spot on the 400MR to Crocker was noble or the best thing for the team...especially after Crocker's failure in the lead off of the 400FR. I found it interesting that his fly split (with a flying start) was only 2 tenths slower than his leadoff free split. Not sure I would have had that confidence in giving that spot to Crocker ... as a coach or as a teammate.

One guy in the 200m fly was wearing a brief. A lot of women in 2004 also wore open-leg training suits.
Master Pole they were a thing but u could still see many high level swimmers not in tech suits.

I did not see Phelps on the medley relay. Is it an error?
He would’ve swam the butterfly leg since he beat Ian Crocker in the 100 fly, but he gave his spot to Crocker because he wanted to give him a chance to see what he could do, since his previous races weren’t too good.
humanISvegan Because he beat Ian Crocker in the 100m butterfly which gave him the butterfly leg on the medley relay. So even though he gave the spot to Crocker he got the medal anyway.

True, but Phelps did medal since he swam in the prelim relay. Gave Crocker a chance at redemption after the 4x100 Free Relay's poor results.

You are both correct. Michael Phelps only swam the preliminary race for the 4x100m medley at Athens 2004. However as he swam within the competition he also received the gold medal.
