Enjoy this look back at Michael Phelps' historic performance at the Summer Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing, China.
Before Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time, he set the record for the single most Gold medals at any single Olympic Games, the USA swimmer finished with 8 Gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Games.

People don't truly understand how insane this is. To not only be the best in the United States at swimming but the World in MULTIPLE disciplines. The hours swimmers put in just to be a "good swimmer" is mind boggling. The guy is the greatest Olympian ever.
Truly he had it all. Even his body was proportioned perfectly to do what he did... Usually the distance from a person's fingertip to the other fingertip equals their height. Phelps "wingspan" was longer than he was tall perfect for swimming).
Usually swimmers are really good at one stroke, he was "world record" good at many. And the form he had.. Just look at his butterfly. Freaking poetry in motion.
His starts and turns were about as good as it gets (watch how he is still under water on the starts when others are already up and swimming and how he pulls ahead every time there is a turn). And I can't even tell you the voodoo he pulled on some of those close finishes.
His strength training was totally on point and his endurance was beyond anything I have ever seen. To pull off a world record in the Olympics would take everything out of most people, but to swim event after event (and remember, he had to swim qualifying heats for each event as well as the final heat) shattering world record after world record, SEVEN TIMES in ONE Olympics?!! Truly, the GOAT if ever there was one. As impressive to see again today as it was watching it happen live "back in the day".
To swim that is.
It’s hard for me to call a swimmer the greatest Olympian IMO. The talent pool is just so much smaller than a lot of other sports

fun fact: Phelps' goggles filled with water during the 200 fly, but he counted his strokes from years of training in the dark mornings at University of Michigan. Source: No Limits, by Michael Phelps
At that level, they know exactly how many strokes they are from the turn, so goggles are just to feel better because they can see, but even blindfolded, they know how far they have left:-)
I don’t think Phelps trained at U of M. He trained in Maryland.
@@workintractorssince04 I think he followed Coach Bowman to Michigan to train there for a few years.
It's so annoying when it happens. Happened to me during a competition, but it was a pain to give it all while being practically blind
I never wore goggles in events for that reason. Marks underwater and the banners at the 15m mark can be seen even with blurry vision so you know how many strokes you need until you have to turn/stop.
It is very difficult for an average person to understand the dedication, strength, perseverance, passion, and willpower it takes to jettison your body through water at maximum efficiency for this long with this much pressure. Simply outstanding.
@The final Verdict This severely undermines people who achieve amazing things in the midst of poverty, war, sickness, and destruction. Michael Phelps got to where he was because he worked hard for it. There's a saying, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." It doesn't matter how gifted you are or how good of an opportunity is presented to you if you don't utilize it to the fullest. Americans with all the best resources in the world still lose from folks around the world in all types of events, simply because they wanted it more and worked more for it. Michael Phelps is where he's at because he worked day and night for it. He's notorious for conducting upwards 3x the workout regiments his competitors were doing, ignoring people who tried to discourage his approach.
forreal... i swam in highschool and these times are unthinkable

I can't even wrap my head around how much strength, energy, stamina, and focus it takes to do this. Incredible.
I love how Phelps cheers way more and seems genuinely happier when he's competing in relays than when he's going solo. He's happier when he can share the victory with his teammates. True legend.
because he knows he has won solo event even before competing...
Because he himself finished second on relay.
Lies again? 10 Olympic Medals Squirt Water
Michael Phelps is the greatest Olympian of all times with 23 Olympic Gold Medals with 28 Olympic medals overall. This number is so mind blogging. Winning an Olympic gold medal is already such an achievement
I totally agree, he is in my opinion the greatest Olympian of all-time. However, I don't always look at the 28 medals as the only thing that makes him so amazing, because the reality is that swimming is a sport that really allows that medal count to sky rocket versus say, sprinting in track and field. They just have way more events in swimming. That being said, I have Phelps as #1 and Bolt as #2, in my opinion.
Im sorry but that title belongs to bolt . Philps is great but he chocked against le clos in his peak, something bolt will never do
Thabang Mesilemoth sorry but Phelps is better in my opinion. Bolt is second
Thabang Mesilemoth whatever the excuses, no one can dispute 23 Olympic gold medals nor match it. Carl Lewis has 9 Olympic golds while Bolt has 8. There is subjectivity here
IC before Phelps and Spitz, Gymnastics, Athletics and Cross Country Skiing dominated the medal tally. I believe it’s because they are Americans who has the greatest chances of securing all 3 relay golds. Nevertheless, Phelps has the most individual Olympic gold medals. Phelps is still the greatest in whatever way you cut the cake.

That’s probably a total of 17 races over 10 days! (I’m assuming he didn’t race in the heats of the relays, if so that’d be 20!!)
Easy
26:24 Phelps was second
He’s doing this same night. Like bro I don’t think anyone can understand. He’s doing qualifying swims every single night, multiple. Sometimes multiple final races in one night. To go all out to get gold on 200 fly and then come back and beat the most talented field ever in 100 fly?? That’s insane. Absolutely insane. This was the most magical Olympic performance ever. Bolt’s career you can look at and say maybe he had the same type of caliber career as Phelps in the Olympics. He literally went Perfect with his events so I’ll give him a chance. People will remember this for centuries. He really made history with hard work and power of mind. True legend.
I bet the man on the podium handing him the medals is like we gotta stop meeting like this
dudes body was just like the perfect vessel to become the greatest swimmer of all time. Has the almost crazilty perfect body for swimming with very long torso and arms and short legs. This disproportionately large chest enables Phelps to power himself through the water. It also means his legs produce less drag (or water resistance) with each stroke. His Wingspan is longer than his height. He is 6'4 and his wingspan is 6'7. And his short legs act like flippers almost. His body is just the perfect swimming machine. Of course it couldnt be done without the immense training and fitness, but the guy was definitely born with the perfect swimmer body.
he was also better because he was just more fit, swam more yardage, and he slept in altitude, which improved his breathing ranges, dudes lungs were twice the average size bc of all the altitude training/sleeping in a “altitude chamber” that he did. Although even before all that he was great when he was in age groups bc he’s just naturally talented but he also worked insanely hard, so he was pretty much unbeatable.
