    The single best example of going out great is Rush. They reached their physical breaking point at that last R40 tour, and they still sounded phenomenal. Then Neil got cancer of course, and would pass away about 5 years after retirement. So it's good they didn't accidentally make that sooner by grinding harder and trying past the point of physically well

    I feel like Anthrax are one of the few bands of their era that can still throw down. the band look to be in good enough shape, don't even need to downtune, and For All Kings was a goddamn masterpiece. hoping they do something new before they run out of whatever fountain of youth they've got (in a musical sense, they only LOOK old)

    I definitely will think that Ozzy Osbourne has to retire because of his ongoing health issues and especially with the state of his voice like what we heard on his latest track. Also with numerous attempts on the previous finales of his tours, I think after the release of his upcoming new album he needs to stop and not tour as constantly. And obviously I do love what his passion is for music but health and personal things do come first. Yet alone I think the album No More Tears was the last strong album he released, but ever since that album the later ones just don't come off as strong or as unique as his heyday was in my opinion.

      I'm honestly amazed he's still alive, I assumed he'd die shortly after the release of Ordinary Man. But thats all the more reason why he needs to retire. The math is NOT in his favour, he will leave us shortly. He should spend his final moments at home with his friends and family, not on a tour bus driving to Pittsburgh or Quebec City or wherever the fuck.

    You know who else should quit music altogether? Jonny Craig. That guy's been in and out of, like, 4 major bands in the Warped Tour post-hardcore scene and he's had TONS of controversies around him (Macbook scandal, abuse of multiple women and countless felonies related to drugs and the aforementioned abuse). He did an interview w/ Finn McKenty a month ago and I DIDN'T BELIEVE A SINGLE WORD HE SAID regarding ANY of those controversies.

    Megadeth is one of my favorite bands of all time but at the Same time I do hope that they actually do retire soon after this new album. I loved the Dystopia album but Seeing Megadeth on that Dystopia tour was eye opening. Dave’s vocals were at their worst, he still was a great guitarist but noticeably Sloppy.
    Megadeth is still big but not nearly as Relevant as they were in the 80s and 90s. Wayne Static and Static X made some of the best Nu Metal albums of all time but yeah I hate just how blatant of a cash Grab and how Disingenuous/Disrespectful it is for a Nu Metal legend like Wayne Static and the fact they keep using the name of *STATIC X*
    Ozzy is in very Poor Health that I’m still very surprised he is still Alive. Some of his band mates might be healthy but Ozzy definitely is in very very bad shape.
    Falling in Reverse is one of the worst bands I have ever listened to. Would actually prefer to listen to the Graveyard Classic albums over this and I’m not kidding. Ronnie RATke is a Cancer. The fact that he is still acting this way as a *38 year old* is beyond Embarrassing.

    This might just be your most informative video to date, I actually learned a lot from it, and I agreed with pretty much all of your points.
    To add to your list of reasons, I would include "whenever a founding band member/long-time member passes away". A prime example of this would include none other than The Black Dahlia Murder. Despite this band pumping out consistently great material and being a (somewhat) modern band, I really believe that it's best for them to retire, as it just wouldn't feel right for them to replace Trevor, considering that he was around since the very beginning and performed vocals on all 9 of the band's albums.

    • @themetalmeltdownofficial
      @themetalmeltdownofficial  Před 2 lety +6

      I dunno. I mean, I TOTALLY see where you're coming from, and I agree that a version of The Black Dahlia Murder without Trevor is going to feel very weird, but at the same time there are A LOT of bands who have continued without iconic members and have done okay. Like there was a time not too long ago when seeing GWAR without Oderus was unthinkable, but they're still out there making records and putting on wild shows and honestly they sound great. Even Queen has gone on with guys like Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert in place of Freddie Mercury and have done some cool stuff.
      At the very least, a hologram or pulling a Static-X and dressing up some nobody in shitty cosplay is NOT the way to go.

    I'll definitely agree with you on many of your observations. The Static X insight is pretty spot-on. To me, continuing on without Wayne is like Pantera continuing on without Dimebag and Vinnie... or if they tried reviving Death without Chuck. There's something missing when you try and reform without your star songwriter/icon.
    Totally agree with Danzig as well. I always joked about the "Evil Elvis", but that album sounded like a parody.
    And I always hated Crüe. Hated Vince for his rabid-chimpanzee-on-meth voice but also his killing of Razzle.

      Danzig last good album imo was Deth Red Sabaoth, that's the last one where he actually felt like he was doing something. If not then he should've done something else after 4. Static X is honestly sad though, their first four albums + Wayne's solo album were great. Everything else is disappointing not to mention Esdel being their vocalist. Dope had some good songs but it feels like Static X is becoming Dope X or Static Dope featuring the other members of Static X.

    When should a rock/metal band retire? Usually as soon as they stop giving a damn about releasing quality music or caring to throw a great live show or start showing utter contempt for their fans. But in some cases like Ozzy and Glen Danzig, it's reasonable because of health issues and its really hindering them being able to even stay on key anymore and it hurts to hear someone you admire/admired slowly die on an audio recording and for that it's perfectly reasonable. But if youre Iron Maiden, or Chuck Berry (before he died), or Motorhead (Before Lemmy died) you could really keep going on as long as the fire burns well with you and the passion is there. I always love opinions and takes videos like this dude. Respect! \m/

    They have been irrelevant since Graveyard Classics but have been around since 1993 (Yes Really), The music (As You already know) is awful, and Chris Barnes literally does not have the strength to do proper growls anymore.

    Once they start to "evolve", you know, when they sign to Nuclear Blast, suddenly use clean vocals, generic song structures, and play ballads. Because evolution always means becoming softer to appeal to a bigger audience, thus, ending up as just another flowchart band that is not recognizable on a playlist. Oh, of course on top of overproduction with the same same-sounding plugins that make your drums sound like cookie boxes and your guitars as if you are not allowed to use distortion. Or they suddenly become a deathcore band or, if already crapcore, they'll implement symphonic black metal elements because Carnifex and Lorna Bore had success doing it

    Hi Robert, I agree with almost everything you said and I wish more new metal bands thrive but sometimes those bands release 2 or 3 great records and after a while they repeat themselves so eventually they fade away. I think that they also abuse of protools and rely too much on technology. For example, 2 days ago I was annoyed by the drum sound of a somewhat known band (with barely 9 years on the scene). It sounded like a freaking FL Studio plugin. Also, most of the time, newer band live performances are mediocre at best. Maybe it's because they didn't have the opportunity to play at a lot of venues like groups from the 70's, 80's or even the 90's. The talent is there so lets hope for cooler and newer styles of metal in the near future. Cheers.

    I think another problem that some old bands could face, is that the only thing members can do is playing music and nothing else. What i mean if a band retires, what is next in the lives of those musicians? There's people like Bruce Dickinson who can live without playing music because he have other succesful endeavors, but for others recording albums and touring is their only way of making a living because is the only thing they know to do.

    I've never even heard of falling in Reverse till now, but that's just horrible. Some guys just need to step back and not regard this sort of thign at all. For all of our sakes.
    This was well thought through and argued; better than most would do. i think ultimately though it's quite simple: Some artists will continue to tour, make albums, and do their thing, so long as people keep buying into it. They don't know how to do anything else. its' not like they can suddenly pick up a menial job at age 60/70, and they literally do not know how to stop. And maybe, as surprising as it might sound, they actually *can't*.
    Ever heard the story of Dick Dale? if not, look into it -- it's a tragic and sad thing.

To classify people who listen to FFDP as white trash is a little harsh, don't you think. Besides that, I do agree that Motley Crue should retire simply because of the tired vocals of Vince. I would also say that Dokken, Don in particular, should retire due to his tired vocals. Unfortunately, many more legacy acts are going to be forced to retire due to vocal troubles and their health in general. Thanks for the video and have a great day

That's a massive downgrade and not worthy of that famous and legendary innovative, groundbreaking band. Ozzy also complained how Tony Iommi let the reputation of Sabbath go downhill with an endless succession of band members.

Forcing out music when you don't want to just isn't going to be as good as a passion album. And of course if your health makes music dangerous or undoable probably best to just stop for your own safety.

    Motley Crue never progressed successfully past party music, tried to ride the 90’s wave to maintain relevance and failed. If your band follows this same blueprint, retire once your genre’s popularity has come to an end and don’t embarrass yourself. If you ride your own wave, don’t give a damn what the label tells you to do and continue to push your sound forward, never retire. As I’ve gotten older I no longer subscribe to the idea that artists make their best work in their 20’s. There’s a market out there for bands that consist of great musicians, that take chances, and don’t give a damn about whether they have commercial appeal. This is the best time for bands that want to make music they like without compromising.

    The thing is in the metal culture the older bands are put on a pedal and due respect they deserve it to an extent, but this also holds back up and coming bands, look at festivals, the headliners are always these legacy bands, Maiden, Ozzy, Kiss etc, bands that are all way past there prime, does it do the genre any good holding back the bands that are in there prime and not giving them the opportunity to shine and given a headliner slot? I'm not so sure it Is a good thing. I meen yes this is more promoters faults taking the easy route and I'm not saying these bands suck now but metal being such a diversive and evolving genre of music also needs to evolve in the way up and coming bands are promoted or looked at, Just because a band is a so called legacy band does that meen there better? Just because they've been around longer? Of course it doesn't but people always gravitate towards nostalgia. I dunno I think it gets to a stage where bands should hang it up but let's face it, they just want to milk it while they can and don't have the fire or ability anymore to write at the top of their game, but that doesn't really seem to matter because people/promoters just see it as a easy and risk free pay day

      @DamnableReverend Před 2 lety

      This was a well-phrased argument and I don't exactly disagree.
      But here's a thing about metal and I guess rock in general too.
      While it's not always backward looking, there's a great deal of attention paid to the history of the genre, and what makes the legendary bands respected even by younger fans. The younger fans would *like* the opportunity to see some of these legacy acts, and for some of them, there won't be much of a chance left. It's jsut too bad it's not going to be these artists in their prime, in many cases.
      And of course, the old fans are still around, and often, still wanting to see these old bands do their thing, maybe one last time.
      i agree it's kind of a frustrating cycle, but i don't really see it changing much. These bands, even when they're old, remind us of our youth, and even the youth of today want that opportunity to see Iron maiden do their thing, or Metallica do their thing. in twenty years the landscape will look somewhat different.

There has to be bands lined up to take the torch so to speak, and while they keep playing safe other bands are being held back that can arguably put on a better show as there closer to there prime. Alright, now let me ask you a question. Is static x really irrelevant? They do tours all the time and tons of people show up to the shows. Even though the other band members didn't get along with him near the end, they were still family. There is still a degree of pain when you lose someone who was a good for such a long time. They put on a solid tribute to Wayne, they give a good tribute for a brother who they never got to make amends with. Do you not think that doesn't haunt them? They still sound great, and edsel dope's costume just gives fans the experience to feel a but closer to Wayne. Just because you don't like them or think they're irrelevant doesn't mean that they are irrelevant. Look at the facts, look how many tickets they sell for shows, look how many albums they sell, look at how many people have fond memories of that band.

    • @themetalmeltdownofficial
      @themetalmeltdownofficial  Před 2 lety +5

      I think they're irrelevant in 2022 because they're irrelevant in 2022. Their last album was a glorified compilation of unused and previously unfinished recordings, before that they hadn't released an album in 11 years. Young bands and metalheads aren't talking about Static-X the way they talk Deftones or Slipknot or Lamb Of God or other bands who debuted or put out seminal records around the same time as Static-X. Sure they still out on tour, but how many of those tours are big? Or outside of the United States? I know that last time they played in Toronto in 2019 the show was FAR from sold out, and it wasn't a gigantic venue.
      If you dig Static-X, great, by all means continue to do so. But I see absolutely no reason to believe Static-X is still relevant in 2022.

Music is art, its expression, its an outlet, ozzy (or other examples) may be way past their prime but if they get pleasure out of making music and touring then is it for us to make them stop? Sure i agree that lots of these artists are leaving a bad taste at the end of their careers but i still support them making music if thats what they want to

    I Can only say the same thing i said on the community post
    In my opinion, a Band or Solo artists like Metallica, Megadeth, Kiss (ESPECIALLY GENE SIMMONS!) Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne etc. Should retire, these bands or artists are pushing 40 years in the Music industry, or they already have been there for that long, and some of these artists are close to if not already 60+ years old, and while some of these artists still release some good music, there's nothing else to prove for them, really, they already have a legacy, they already made god knows how much money, and peoples already know their names if you say it in public, even those who generally don't listen to heavy music, they still know the classics like Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Dio, Maiden, Slayer etc. And lets be real, do we really want to see these artists die on stage at such an old age? Nobody with a two digit IQ wants to see that, except the boomers of course who can't accept the fact that their favorite artists aren't as good as they used to be, they won't release another Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, they won't release another Master of Puppets, or Rust in Piece, etc, they should, instead, try to give a chance to relatively newer bands from either the 2000s or 2010s
    I think the golden age when they should retire is somewhere between the age of 50-60, because once they push 30+ years in the industry, chances are they are getting old and tired of it by that point.
    But i think it also depends on the quality of the albums they release, lets say, if an artist like Green Day, and this is just an example, makes a bad album like Father of All, then i think its time for them to retire, because really, if they can't be bothered to release an album that's longer than 30 minutes, i think they really should just stop making music, because it tarnished their legacy, but i also do have a general "3 strikes and out" rule for artists, which is basically if they release an album back to back that is so bad that there's no redeeming quality to it, then they should retire. Case and point, a CERTAIN CHRISTIAN BAND Who i'll give them the Voldemort Treatement until the end of this year.
    In Tl;Dr: It's complicated, but generally i think after 30 years they should think about retireing
    Side Note: Ronnie Radke can suck all my 7 inch dick, if he does release an Album or EP this year it will make my worst list no matter what, and trust me, i wont be kind to him when that time comes around
    Edit: Also. Static-X Is still a thing?.....Okay...and i thought i was cringy for still listening to old Three Days Grace

It's pretty freakin' obvious that Danny is bringing AA into this weird butt-rock sound that the majority of that band's fanbase didn't grow up with... because they were originally a metalcore band. Plus, he's had a couple vocal injuries, alcohol and drug problems, and countless live performances where he would sing the older metalcore songs in this weird butt-rock/hair metal style (that I thought was unique, but that's a WHOLE 'nother discussion for another time). In short, Worsnop should just hang it up and become the band's photographer, because he's actually quite good at that.

Solo artist, if there’s a medical issue or can’t do it anymore, then it’s time to stop. But, if they can still do it, and pull it off without canceling shows, then by all means, go until YOU feel your time is done. Metal itself should have retired back in the early 2000's when Metalica went Pop. Millennials and Gen Z got into metal when it's already dying. Metal's golden age was back when Boomers and Gen X was in their prime (70s-90s).

      Shut up with that "Metallica went Pop" crap, they only have a few songs that are anywhere close to being Pop

    Boomers keep these terrible bands alive. You have to be honest and introspective about the band and yourself, but once you've written your best why shit on your owm discography? Danzig needs to go. In Flames is bad. There's literally a mill bands that should retire or play in a different project. The fact that ppl still go see Motley Crue or any 80's glam band blows my mind.but I'd go see Repulsion or Cannibal Corpse when I'm 60 yrs old. I guess my kid will be saying the same thing I am now when he's my age.

      Repulsion only does like one-off gigs here and there and Cannibal Corpse legit still sounds great. Should that change is up for time to decide, but for now, I don't think anybody will argue they need to retire.

      @@themetalmeltdownofficial band should take note of Repulsion and those bands because they know they wrote their best material already and can play that until the end of time and fans will love it. No reason to alienate the fan base with shit albums.
