The Moto G Stylus is the latest mid tier android phone from Motorolla. It has the added benifit of being the cheapest smartphone to ship with a stylus in recent years. in thi review I talk about the phone, the drawing experience and what the apps are like for creating digital art.

It can't tell the difference from your finger, the pen........a carrot...
I died laughing when that happend
:D
drawing with carrot challenge
@@thebradcolbow
What's the red screenshot you used for the phone in the video, & where can I find it? Thanks!
I feel like irl a carrot wouldnt draw a carrot. I imagine a carrot would draw healthy soil, because carrots are aspirational
@@thebradcolbow can you also do a review of the LG V60? It has active pen support and a dual display (the pen will also work with the dual display). So it is the only device right now with a folding experience with pen experience at the same time. The combo is a bit pricey but it will likely be cheaper than the next note or fold.
I've always had trouble with styluses, I always lost them, since my Nintendo DS days.
I remember losing my stylus and I had to use a pencil. Those were dark times.
For the day, I used a toothpick, over the stylus, I found it was more precise because it was thinner
....just use a carrot
Now you’re in the art community... I see you EVERYWHERE in anime videos
Oh, you're here too?
I'm not an art guy but your review popped up in my feed LOL. I've had this phone since the day it came out and I really do like it. I have generally had high-end LG phones and finally decided I'm just not paying that much money anymore for a phone. I have had zero problems with my Moto G stylus and I have been very happy! The two features that I don't hear a lot of people talk about much are the 128 gig memory which is fantastic...and also the stereo speakers. I really didn't think stereo speakers would make that much of a difference but even watching your video and holding my phone in landscape mode...the stereo speakers just make the experience so much better. There are other features Moto phones have had for years that I find I will never be able to do without now. When I go to bed - fiddling with all the volumes on the phone to turn everything down is done! Just turn the phone over flat on its face and everything is in do not disturb mode. Doesn't seem like a big deal but how did I live without that? Also the two shakes of the phone launching the flashlight? Brilliant! The two twists of your hand launching the camera? Yes! Again, not really features that artists might be craving but they are awesome! Two thumbs up!
Agree with all 😀
I have one too and I like it ... !!!
Thanks for the comment - definitely will be considering these mentions, when I make my decision tomorrow between the Moto and the LG Stylo 6.
You all prolly dont care but does someone know a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I was dumb forgot the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
@Robert Bennett Instablaster ;)
Seeing "motorola" and "stylus" at the same time, makes me miss their small phone that ALSO had stylus at that time lol
I need that carrot stylus all up in my life.
I HAVE IT!! ITS DO FREAKING AMAZING!!!!
LOL Yes!😂
Buy a crochet hook grip for it
It's a good phone...don't knock it ...
Good realistc review on Moto G Stylus.
I'm going to buy the phone.
If you're going to use the stylus alot and other features the g power doesn't have. Yes. Otherwise get the g power. It works perfectly for my sister
I bought the phone and the stylus is nice for quick notes or sketches when on the go.
7:52 when your stylus is broken.
WOW, I honestly loved this video. I am not an artist but was needing a phone and have always enjoyed having a stylus. It was so refreshing to watch a phone review from the perspective of a more normal consumer instead of someone hyper-focused on specs like most phone reviews. You said exactly what I've been feeling for a couple years now mid-range phones and flagship phones don't have a massive gap anymore, yet somehow most tech channels will make it sound like there is a night and day difference, and honestly, there is not. Everything on it is good enough and at the price, it's hard to find a real fault. I've seen so many videos reviewing midrange phones and they always talk about the performance like it's massively slower and it's not unless you do a super scientific measurement most people will be hard-pressed to notice a difference anymore. Thank you for being so real about this
One thing i discovered recently was that combining a 3D Touch iPhone with an active stylus is actually a pretty decent drawing experience. The active stylus is small enough to feel more like a pen, and 3d touch can simulate pressure. It worked shockingly well with Artstudio Pro.
Brad, did you try the Android-compatible drawing tablets on this? I wanna know if it works. :)
Unfortunately it's just small capacitive stylus, so there's no difference between this and my cotton stylus.
Artflow does the same thing for simulating pen pressure. It's really interesting.
Why spending $300 for phone with stylus if you can go cheaper with carrot?
Samsung = lots of Bloatware Software Pre-installed that cannot be removed. Motorola = No Bloatware Software pre-installed. Winner is Motorola.
Yet I feel Samsung allows more customization than the Moto g
I made a CZcams account to ask:
1. Bring back the previous intro jingle please!
2. Have you considered doing a live stream of you doing your illustration work? Would totally love to see that.
Keep up the fantastic videos, you're my go-to reference for folks asking me about which art tablet to buy!
Great review brad! Thinking of getting it for my birthday.
Brad, can you review the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite Plus S Pen? Thanks!
You can buy a Note 9 for around $300 these days... MUCH better purchase!
I don't know about less than $300 but I did get mine for less than $400 in pristine condition with amazon refurb guarantee. Love it.
Brian Eun that’s a great price
Note 9 is horrible
@@starstatusvillarreal3747 how so
Nope. Samsung Notes have blemishes and LCD Burn. Iphones are the best, they are just expensive. Androids are just cheaper with a better display. Overall, Apple 🍎 wins!!!! I've had both Android phones 📱 and Apple 🍎 phones 📱. And altho I prefer a Droid, the functionality, OS, Speakers, and Overall quality of the phones are just better with the Apple 🍎. The only disadvantage of 🍎 is that it costs too much damn money 💰
Thank you so much, ive been looking for a good art review for this phone. Ever since i saw the commercial for this phone I've been wanting an to watch an honest review for it's artistic potential and performance to see if it was worth it.
Been waiting anxiously for this one. Great vid as always, Brad.
I think Brad Colbow is the man in the niche of letting us artist know what is key to buying your art electronics to being a digital artist. He has helped me make the decision as to which software and hardware I should buy to being an artist. I currently do art because it calms me down and it is a hobby. Just recently I have started my own channel which offers Drawing Digitially tips and hints from my past. This is way outside my comfort zone as I do art as a hobby but have been requested to share how I create many of my images so I decided during this locked in my house time to build a new channel. Would love to hear other artists opinion so drop by my site if you are interested.
I was drinking something when the carrot bit arrived. Then what I was drinking was no longer anywhere near my mouth, and everywhere else around me. Thanks Brad 😂. Excuse me while I get a cloth to clean this up now.
I actually picked this phone up for my son today. His phone died and needed a cheap replacement. This review helped me pick one out for him. He likes to doodle and sketch with me at restaurants and other outings. Always taking my tab s7 plus or some pens and papers. This will be super convenient so he doesn't have to drag he whole art bag with him everytime.
Wish there were more smartphones with styli! Sad there isn't any pen pressure though. I rely on pen pressure quite a bit for my lining. Maybe we can pressure Moto to strike a deal with Wacom lol
When I saw the intro, I thought "Isn't this the art guy? Why is he reviewing a phone?"
Does the stylus work on other regular smartphones (e.g., your note10)?
Good general review for the phone! I was looking for a review that focused on the pen and apps for the pen. Many who read this might be deciding on whether to get the Moto G Power or this Moto G Stylus. I like the unique blue color of the Stylus and the fact it ships with 128 MB of internal storage vs 64 for the Power. Your review really has me leaning toward the Stylus because I could see myself actually using the pen to mark screen captures and simple note taking. I already use a power brick to re-charge so having the long battery life isnt crucial. Im sold on the Moto features like chop-light and turn-to open camera. Hope they still have Gorilla Glass, but I hear they switched to something comparable.
That phone looks cool
I was having a lot of trouble determining which moto g phone I wanted as my next phone and seeing you talk about this one confirmed the decision for me
I love the idea of having a stylus to quickly jot or sketch something down and trying to do that with just my finger on a touchscreen never worked for me
now screen cast the phone to windows 10 via usb or a tv and use the phone as a drawing tablet , great review nevertheless.
My current art phone is the LG V60 And im loving the dual screen especially when using reference photos
Thanks for this. I had been looking at the G stylus and this review is just what i needed. Have you tried the Moto Z4? It supposedly supports the Surface Pen.
0:10 is there a notification light?
This be a tempting phone for me to use when I can't bring my Tab S6 around and want to draw on-the go.
Would slightly trust this a bit if this comes. Having a bit of trust issues with "Stylus" Mid-range phones after the LG Stylus 3/Stylo 3 in which stopped working after changing to a newer phone and decided to use it again after 3-6 months in storage.
If I have the money, I'd buy the Note 10 Lite once Quarantine is over and I've save my money for it. Or just wait til 2021/2022 and hope for the best.
Carrot test should be in all future reviews! xD
great video! I liked how you focus exactly on art features avoiding to go into details on the rest of the specs, describing them simply as "good enough"!
I don't understand why LG or now Moto have bothered with stylus phones. Samsung does it amazing and no one compares to the Note line. If you can't find a note 10 lite in your country buy one online from a retailer and have it unlocked for you. I can't remember a time I've ever gone into an actual cell phone store and signed up for a ridiculous 2 year plan that costs more than it's worth than buy a new phone online and get a sim card only plan.
I literally got a WIX ad in the middle of your Squarespace read
I just picked up an opened, but brand new / never used, Moto G Stylus off eBay for $170 + free shipping. I'm really looking forward to getting it soon. It's locked to metropcs only. That is my carrier.
You see how there is darkness around the camera hole and the edges of the screen. That's why they put that gradient wallpaper to hide the darkness of the lcd.
Try wearing one of those art gloves, it works wonders.
Have the G Stylus & was pleased with it enough to buy for my son-who's a battery hog. He also likes the speaker sound volume. Promising start for Motorola.
Surprised that Brad didn't mention that the moto note app has pressure sensitivity on the marker tool (the third tool to the right).
Anyone know any art apps compatible with the stylus. Tried using Artflow but it doesn't seem to recognize the stylus.
Yep, already doing art on my note 10.
will you be doing a review of the new Huion Kamvas Studio 22?
LG's V60 is compatible with a Wacom pen. I'd like to see you review that one. Thanks
It's not got a silo for one though, which is one of the main points here.
Motorola also released the Moto Z4 last year that supports MPP (Surface) styluses, but that's not built-in either. The V60 uses Wacom AES, which other than palm rejection is inferior to Wacom EMR (as found in Samsung Note devices).
@@tams805 I still don't see why it shouldn't have its own review. Especially when you have the dual display with also has pen support.
@@mdrahman6732 I had both Z4 and V60.
Z4 was fine phone but MPP action was meh at best (lots of jitter) V60's AES wasn't much better, also suffering from jitter. But at least Z4 only costed $500. V60 was over $900.
Skip both and either order the Note 10 Lite (which is available on US amazon for ~$500) or do what I did and find a refurb Note 9 for less than $400 on amazon. The pen action is so much better than either Z4 or V60. Night and day. SD845 is still more powerful than the SD700 on the Z4. You still get a 3.5mm phone jack. If you find a good condition Note 9 for good price, it's the best move IMO.
Thank you for this review, I was looking exactly for an art review on this phone. 👍👍
One season for my wanting and needing a phone with a stylus is because of electronic forms and needing to sign them before sending them off. And some stores have apps to express check out that need a signiture such as the pharmacy which sinks phone with their store server connection. I'm a caretaker and thus have a lot of electronic forms to deal with.
I would like a review about samsung galaxy note 10 lite also! Once again ... awesome review, a pleasure to watch!
Is there a power button on the back?
I have always been curious. Are their stylus (this and LG stylo) can be used with other phone? Maybe some phone can, and some don't.
They don’t .
I have an lg stylus and sadly its stylus does not work with other phones. I assume these phones have a more sensitive screen? Cause they work with other materials while some other phones don't. (For example my mom's new huawei did not work with a stylus made of aluminum foil)
I sent mine back because even tho I got the Unlocked Version from Best Buy the phone didn't support Voice Over LTE on any Carrier I tried. Did anyone else notice not being able to use your Data when talking on the phone with this phone?
Is it better than an xr? Im looking to switch to android from my iphone
OMG! and Im still waiting for new Moto MODS for my MOTO Z3 .... Its dead isn't it?
I love my moto g stylus. It's a great phone. I got the metro by t-mobile version. I had it for almost 2 weeks. The love the display, the camera and the battery life. I actually find myself using the stylus more then I thought I would. I also love that I get 128gb of space. You can't move apps to the SD card with this phone but that's okay with all the space you get. It's also very snappy.
You are an artist and the review is from that perspective which is fine. Like the sketches you made though? Thanks for the review.
I bought a Note 4 about a year ago after my more modern phone died in a tragic battery-changing accident. I've found it to be a competent art tool with Sketchbook, and a decent phone if one is not obsessed with having the latest and greatest. It has a pressure and tilt-sensitive fairly accurate s-pen, and is a fun electric sketchbook that you can keep in your pocket. I got mine for $125. So that might be an alternative too.
This was a nice video. My wife's Umidigi S3 Pro's voice circuit has been failing over the past week and finally my wife decided enough is enough. She wanted a new phone but didn't want to spend a fortune ($1,000=fortune to us). In another life she was a painter and she still likes to sketch. From the impression you gave of this phone it's perfect for her. We purchased it off Amazon as soon as your video finished. Maybe an affiliate link on all the products you showcase in the future? Anyway this video was perfect for us. Thank you.
Could you please review the hp pavilion x360 that was released with Intel 10nth gen processor a week ago? It's a 500$ computer but I wanna know what the drawing experience is like on it
I have hp pavillion x360. Before buying it I also wanted to know more about its drawing capabilities but alas! The number of CZcams channels reviewing it is next to none. So I had to buy it hoping it would turn out to be good.
And indeed it turned out to be not good but great for digital drawing. I have the i5 variant. It cost me something less than $900. But I think the i5 one can handle the resource heavy software like photoshop better and you can use the cpu power for other tasks too. But if you don't need that much power then I think the i3 varient would be fine too.
About drawing experience and the hp pen it comes with. The pen is an active pen. The palm rejection is great. The pen use the microsoft pen technology. Due to that it has some wobble compared to stylus with wacom ones. But it doesn't become a issue if the line smoothening in the software is around 5-10%. Other than that I think the experience overall is definitely premium.
I just also wanted to use that for notetaking. The machine is capable but windows lacks in the app section in that matter compared to ipad with goodnotes and notability. Windows only has Onenote which I didn't like. 😣
I'd like you to make a video explaining what you do with all of the stuff you review.
Does it get sent to you for free? Do you have to buy it yourself? Do you keep it? Do you sell it? Do you have to return it?
10:03 nice artwork bro👍👍
Nice review. Was hopeful, maybe it would be a good alternative to the Note Lite, but guess that's still the best "cheap" note stylus phone.
Does this phone have a notification led for messages?
Do not even think about it Brad, there are Motorola phones that come with Ntrig Digitizers on which Microsoft's and Wacom's Dual protocol pens can work. MotoZ4 is the phone you are looking for. That's a real active stylus vs passive capacitive of Moto G. And many LG phones also have it. It's just these companies are foolish enough to not advertise it.
Imagine the line wobble on an Ntrig screen...... just YUK!
@@fablewalls it's better than a passive pen. Not bad for a budget phone. Stylus snobs like me already own a Galaxy Note and obviously this video was not meant for us. It's for budget Mobile artists.
@@MegaMar20 - how is it better than a passive pen? It IS a passive pen - or are you saying this is somehow an EMR pen?
0:03 wallpaper pls?
Seems a thick bumper case would alleviate much of the palm and finger interference when using the stylus.
Thanks for the video and showing how the stylus actual pros and cons
“The phone screen can’t tell the difference between your finger, your palm, your stylus... a carrot?” BRO THAT WAS HILARIOUS
I wanna know if they are dual apps? Like samsung..
Can you do a review on the new Samsung tab s4 lite?
I LOVE Motorola! Been using them for years because once you start using the dimple, you will shun other phones for not giving you the same experience. Cult of Moto will know what I'm talking about. Their phones are geared towards different strokes for different folks. Google centered, Camera centered, Battery centered, Video or Audio centered. We bought the G6 play way back when and are still using them in near mint condition both hardware and software. We were just recently looking at the new G phones not because we are in need but because money is burning a hole in our pockets. That being said I am currently awaiting my iPad Mini 5 which I have major art plans for.
I gave this video a watch cause I’m looking to switch from Apple to Android and this is the phone that I’m looking at so I’ve been reading different online reviews and so far all of them have been pretty good I mean obviously there’s little things that people don’t like about it but for a budget phone this is exactly what I’m looking for so this video was really helpful to me to help make my choice
i got this for around 100 plus dollars with a free case , screen protector and pop socket you put on the back
I own a galaxy s7, would it be a good idea to upgrade to moto g stylus?
I just got this phone for 80 bucks from metro pos. I love the blue metallic color. And I listen to music on it all day and the battery was at 40% and I'm not sure but I think it's metros connection but sometimes it takes a day for text to send.
Hey ik that this is off topic but what is the name of the song in the video?
Hey Brad, have you tried the LG V60 with the use of Wacom Bamboo pen?
Just ordered this phone. It's down to $199. Now a year later. I have a moto R6 that won't stop freezing up. Can't wait for this phone! I'm on a budget and the main selling points for me was the 128gb internal memory and 4GB ram.
I can’t see having a phone that doubles as my sketchbook. I’d rather put the $ into a refurb iPad mini or Galaxy tab
gordon thomas it’s just practice. I sketch with my finger. Once you get pinch zoom it helps a lot
@@aoterou I think they got rid of it for space and for battery life since it has its own later and also consumes additional power.
And I guess it also helps save cost.
A refurbished (?!) ipad mini? You cannot be serious...
Do yourself a solid get the tab6 or a tab4 and CloverPaint.
@@aoterou checkout the sonarpen w ibis paint
I started digital art with a phone before I could afford an ipad. So I think using a phone is good for beginners.
Just got one yesterday. I needed a cheap phone for my business. I was able to put GCAM on it. Now the pics come out just like on my Google Pixel 4
I've been using my LG V20 (2016 phone) for two years now...
Would this be a good upgrade?
Same, still got my T-Mobile V20 and will probably be picking this phone up and waiting for the Pixel 4a holiday deals
Me too. I wanna upgrade soon too but I'm broke
@@elkanjulian1037 I upgraded to the Moto G Power and it has been great. Unless you need the stylus get the G Power instead.
@@Edgar... I also recently got the Moto G Power, I agree it has been great.
So something to consider, i work on phones pretty much for a living and i have had 3 of these through my shop already.
These are a mighty impressive phone for the money, uses a 665 CPU, pretty good camera and overall just feels good in the hand.
However there is corner cutting, primarily in fabrication quality. Most phones are taped/glued together and this phone is no different however the adhesive quality is noticeably lower than more well known phones like a S20 or a IP11. These phones not not IP67 rated and would barely qualify as water resistant. The stylus channel is a weak point in this case. These phones get mighty hot as well, cooling is done with a small GPU like thermal pad and some copper tape as its primary cooling solution. The lack of a coil in the back is rather disappointing, however not unheard of for this price bracket.
So to perspective buyers i would say this, Sub 300 this is one of the best choices bar none, However going up to 400 gets you a iPhone SE or a S10E and these are better phones straight up.
If you do buy one protect it and don't drop it in a body of water ever.
Bob Jackson,
Would you say the Samsung A51 is a more solid phone? I really want 128 GB. Is there a problem with OLED screen burn on that phone?
Or you can just not fork over money to Apple because it's a horrible company
Can we use the graphic tablets for fusion 360?
@10:50 I don't think that's true. This stylus has a finer tip than the traditional capacitive rubber or mesh styluses that work on just about any phone.
Brad Colbow your channel is awesome! I love your videos! 👍
Hey brad any intentions on reviewing huawei matepad pro? It releases a stylus and i kinda wanna know how well it fares seeing that the product are basically trying to copy ipad pro
I have the phone and love it. Excellent!
It's basically the motorola one action, which I have, but with a stylus, which I also have a terrible run-down stylus, but drawing on my phone is pretty good.
Could you review the huawei matepad pro please !!! I would love to get your input !
here's a tip: you can export and upload at 4k60 even if you're actually shooting/editing at 1080p30, it will look much better and closer to original that way thanks to youtube's garbage quality
you can tell by going from 1080 to 1440 to 4k modes on a 1080p screen and being able to instantly tell all three apart
I might just end up grabbing it, my moto G6 is holding up quite well, but when it no longer does, I will have this as a good contender.
I had a lg stylus some three years ago. Same thing with the stylus. Cheap and effective
Good budget phone, I like mine. Budget doesn’t always mean cheap.
Hey brad can you make video on inskcape and swatchbooker open source software
Keep is the best note taking app there is. And the only one you need. Since it sync perfectly with Google. Has doodle feature too
If you are a pixel artist it's a game changer. With pixel studio I can animate on the go and send assets to my team without dragging my laptop or tablet along for the ride. I have a galaxy tab and hp Spectre but for a quick pixel jam it does a great job.
The Galaxy tab s6 lite is almost out. I can't wait for an in depth review from you on it.
BodyInProgress me too
Tech geek who stumbled upon your video here: yes you can get the note 10 lite in the us. But you have to order it through B&H and it’s unlocked so you have to buy it upfront and bring to your carrier but you can get it.
Whats the best free drawing apps to use with this phone?
