I wouldn’t consider the Philippines as necessarily being “open” when it comes to sex; I mean if anything it’s culturally conservative around here, with sex definitely being treated as taboo (which can easily be ascribed to the predominant influence of religion/the Catholic church). The rate of unwanted (teen) pregnancies just reflects how skewed our sexual education is (or lack of, really), with the stigmatization/suppression of conversations around sex just further exacerbating the problem.
I guess you only hear about the accidental pregnancies at a young age because it gets into the press, which is an exception rather than a norm.
Same here. I think the younger generations are slowly being open about sex and also the schools are slowly teaching sex in higher levels. It's just that it's still considered taboo to many.

Don't connect the issue of early/teen pregnancies to not having specific education, because in my country (georgia) it's similiar situation and also taboo, but we don't have problems of teen pregnancy. And many people wait till college years, marriages and serious relationships to have this experience. I think philippines is not naturally a conservative or religious culture, and this explains it.

Spain has been 'open-minded' since after the Franco era. I happened to watch a live "peep-show" spectacle in Madrid back in 2000 😉 which I wouldn't even see back in the States. Peep-show places abound in Spain's major cities. And yes, nude beaches are common too.

As an American I consider 99 percent of how high school is portrayed in the USA I have are grossly inaccurate. The most glaring thing is how the way the girls are dressed. Even if there is no uniform there is still a dress code. It’s highly unlikely that an American school is going to let you walk around in a shirt that shows your midriff yet most people in these shows are wearing crop tops. I remember having to call home to bring me a change of clothes because my pants were too tight or my shorts were too short. I also think students are portrayed as having a lot more time in between classes than most of us actually do. My high school was two story and multiple buildings. Actually some facilities were across the street. High school as well as at my 7th and 8th grade schools, it was a struggle to sometimes have time to go by my locker to get my books, pee, and get to class before the tardy bell rang. On tv they have these long drawn out dissertation length conversations in between classes. 😂
This is so accurate. Girls at my high school weren’t even allowed to wear spaghetti straps for senior photos cause it showed too much shoulder, crop tops are just completely unrealistic in a school setting currently. The time thing is also true. Personally, my classes ended up being on opposite sides of the school every hour so I had to book it or be late.
im american and my highschool lets kids wear more or less anything but a couple teachers have dress codes for THEIR ROOMS SPECIFICALLY bc they're too conservative for crop tops that barely expose anything lmao. natural and dyed hair, piercings, ungodly amounts of makeup, and visible tattoos are allowed, just nothing that would be considered sexual by a sane person or vulgar images/phrases on shirts. also my school is all one building and so are most ive been to so yours may be weird lol. in between periods part is true, we get like 4 minutes
Yeah, the age of consent isn't 18 like she said. You can google it; the age is 16. There are only three countries in Europe where it is 18, mostly it's 15-17. Actually, Spain only raised it to 16 within the last ten years; up until 2013 the age was 13.

@@niako5995 The problem is that she is wrong. The legal age of consent for marital relations in Spain is 16, and it was just raised to 16 in 2013. Previously it was 13 years old. In most of the world including the USA it is about 16. The reason people in the USA think it is 18 is because they see that in TV shows and movies which are made in CA where the age is 18. You must be 18 to sign a legal contract like a bank loan or enlisting in the military at 17 which is why you need a parent to co-sign, but for honeymoon type activities it is 16 in about 30 states in the USA.

I watch Elite on Netflix but believe a lot is being exaggerated. The teens are having sex in the school shower and everywhere else, take drugs and drink nightly but no one seems to be addicted enough to go to rehab. Most parents are nowhere around. It’s entertainment though.

I feel the same about Elite. But at same time I think TV content also reflects us and is an indicator of what is popular and what we get used to seeing. Perhaps the first time you see Elite you are surprised, but then you get used to it. For example, since I've lived in Korea, the only thing I've seen on TV (series and programs) are kisses and I haven't found any program where the talk show hosts verbally attack each other and use swear words like in Spain. I'm not saying it's better or worse, just different, and I think that it has an impact on our lives and our way of expressing ourselves, because we're exposed to it. it is important to note that Philippines is still a very conservative country (maybe not as it used to). we are aware of but we are in no way open to teenage pregnancy, or sex outside marriage at the least. also, these cases of teenage pregnancy do not necessarily reflect the lack of guidance from their parents (though in many cases, they do) as many filipino teenagers will make their way to doing it in spite of the many warnings. they think they know better. it is a shame to admit that teenage pregnancy is prevalent in a highly conservative country as the Philippines.

I actually watched that documentary like what she mentioned, it's from gma, and it's actually a case study so it's just a story of a one person (i guess the girl from the doc is below 15 when she got pregnant as far as i remember) but the whole topic of the documentary was teenage pregnancy which is teenagers who got pregnant during their teenage years and mostly 16 - 18 are the average of teenage pregnancy. Sex education is exist in the ph but not in depth discussion. In elementary we learned about reproductive of a man and a women, and how babies are formed. In highschool we learned about more about sex but not indepth just, you know in humor way of discussing to the students because it's still a kind of taboo topic.

Hmmm, the philippines is kinda dualistic. You will find that filipino parents mostly dont allow or do not prefer their kids to have sex or be in a relationship unless they have finished college. On the other hand, teenage pregnancy is a reflection of teenage hormones and lack of sex education, rather than what the filipino culture condones or agrees with. The philippines is a very religious country and very conservative, it is still the only country in the world that doesnt allow divorce, aside from maybe the vatican. I think the philippines is very asian and similar to china in this aspect, however, i cannot speak for the new westernized generation. Sex has been less taboo, and adults these days have sex without being married, which used to be considered a disgraceful, shameful and dishonorable act.

I really hope sex will be openly talked about here in the Philippines. It should no longer be taboo. We need proper sex education at schools and media. They show a lot of sex scenes in local tv shows but they still censor the proper terms for private parts on tv. That's just not right. They're giving wrong ideas.
