      Keep it up! Every step matters :).
      I have used exercise and physical activity throughout my weight loss journey. I have really stepped things up in the last few months (after researching for this course) and I feel amazing. I am getting rid of the stubborn last few pounds. I am sleeping even better. And I feel like a million bucks.
      I wish you the same success Jackie :)

    This is why I love my Apple Watch. It turns moving into a sort of game where you can compete against yourself and others

    • @GrowGrayMatter
      @GrowGrayMatter  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Absolutely! Studies do show that people who track their steps walk more than people who don't. I consider a device like an Apple Watch to be a behavioral change tool more than just a tracking tool.
      I just switched from an Apple Watch to the Oura ring last week. I have loved it so far. Now I have turned good sleep into a game as well. And I always like to win :)

    Our obesity problems are caused by multiple issues...NOT one thing. The American diet of processed foods plus sitting plus stress plus etc etc.... we need to examine out "culture" .... and what is important to us.

    • @GrowGrayMatter
      @GrowGrayMatter  Před 10 měsíci +3

      I agree 100%. This study made the argument that the decrease in physical activity was the primary driver of our obesity epidemic, but that is one of 100 culprits. Studies have shown that eating highly processed foods leads to eating 500 extra calories per day.
      Here is my video with tons of science behind how poor sleep is another huge player:
      czcams.com/video/uw_CHTiN1LU/video.html
      I have also done multiple videos about how stress causes overeating, slows our metabolic rate, leads to poorer food choices, and causes us to lose more muscle when we diet.
      We need a complete overhaul. I am living proof of what can happen if we do just that. Yes, I relied on intermittent fasting as my main method of losing 200 pounds of fat. But there is no way I would have been successful without dealing with all of these other issues.
      Well said

      I am excited too :). I have been blown away by the science. This has led me to make even more changes in my life. I am currently burning 1,000-1,300 calories per day between exercise and adding movement to my day. I love being able to eat a lot and still see the fat melting away :)
      Stay tuned

      Spent years trying to lose weight through exercise (biking 50 miles a day) with no success whatsoever, but with fasting and keto/carnivore, I was able to restore proper metabolism and lose 100+ pounds, so I'm eager to add more exercise to the mix. @@GrowGrayMatter

    • @GrowGrayMatter
      @GrowGrayMatter  Před 9 měsíci +1

      The key is to find ways to move that you truly enjoy or you will never stick with it. Do you have any hobbies that get you moving? My wife doesn't exercise at all, but she stays very active because she enjoys working in the garden and taking our dog Ruby for walks.
      How about water aerobics? Have you ever tried something like that?

      Thank you :). Have a job that keeps you moving is a huge plus.
      If you have a sedentary job, then you have to get creative. I teach, so one HUGE change that I made was getting rid of the chair by my desk. I don't sit down while I teach or between classes. I only site down when I am working at my computer. This one change added about 6000 steps to my work day.
      Let me know if you have any questions on this topic. I am still making videos. I want to know what I should cover :)

    With more sedentary lifestyle. You can’t make it off of diet and excise for weight loss anymore

    • @GrowGrayMatter
      @GrowGrayMatter  Před 10 měsíci

      I agree 100%. There is no way I would have made as much progress if I didn't get moving. It accelerated my weight loss, kept me from ever hitting a weight loss plateau for the first year, and has made me much healthier overall.
      Diet is the key to getting into a calorie deficit. But physical activity is the key to improving health and maintaining weight loss.
      Thanks for sharing

    Cliffhanger!

  • @18schnapps88

    Its literally calories in calories out. 2.5 hours of "standing" a day wont burn a lot of calories... its really not that complicated just eat less

    • @GrowGrayMatter
      @GrowGrayMatter  Před 10 měsíci +4

      Why not do both? Eating less is the most powerful lever that we have, but moving more will accelerate weight loss, decrease lean mass loss, improve our health, and help us live longer. I don't see it as an either/or situation. Both is the key.
      The seminal study on the topic actually showed that 167 pound people can burn an extra 67.2 calories per hour if they go from sitting to standing with fidgeting. And multiple studies (like the one mentioned in this video) have shown that lean people burn an extra 300-350 calories per day by standing and moving more.
      Not to mention, at some point someone just can't (or shouldn't) eat less. I never ask someone to reach a point where there average calories intake is under 1000 calories per day. There comes a time when we are better off moving more than eating less.
      But we each need to choose the path that works for us

    • @18schnapps88
      @18schnapps88 Před 10 měsíci

      @@GrowGrayMatter I am absolutely a fan of exercise (aerobic like walking etc.) But it really not that great for weight less. FYI 67.2 calories is less than half a twinkie!

    • @GrowGrayMatter
      @GrowGrayMatter  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I agree that each little activity we do doesn't burn a lot of calories, but we compound those calories by the number of times we do them@@18schnapps88 . 67.2 calories doesn't sound like a ton, but that is for standing 1 hour per day. Do that every day, and you burn 7 extra pounds of fat per year.
      Diet will always be king. But most people want to lose fat as quickly and safely as possible. I see no problem with pulling levers on both sides of the equation (calories in and calories out).
      I have lost 200 pounds of fat. I estimate that increasing my energy expenditure was responsible for 25% of my fat loss. I sure am glad that I did it :)

    You lost me with this one. I've been overweight to obese my whole life. Definitely not due to lack of movement as I worked building houses for 40 years. My weight increased and health decreased as time passed.
    It wasn't until I retired that I finally found the key which has been what I eat not how much I eat and definitely not how much I move.
    I was always reasonably careful what I ate and followed the recommendations of low fat, limited meat etc until I was diagnosed with t2d and emphysema (spirometry test 51%). During the research I did following that diagnosis I stumbled upon the low carb way of eating and it has changed my life.
    In a year and a half my hba1c has gone from 72 to 37 my spirometry test from 51% to 69% I've lost 43kgs my aches and pains have all but vanished and I have more energy than I've had since I was in my 30s.

      This is excellent to hear. It sounds like you have made amazing progress. You should be quite proud.
      I actually agree with you may more than this video would lead you to believe. I do think that focusing on increasing physical activity is a great idea, and the findings from this study were interesting, but I personally think that changing your diet is much more important if weight loss is your goal. It is way "easier" to eat fewer calories than to burn more.
      So why do I talk about physical activity and exercise so much, then? There are lots of reasons, but here are my favorites:
      Physical activity and exercise:
      1. Will improve your health in ways that diet alone cannot.
      2. Will accelerate weight loss, and specifically abdominal fat loss
      3. Will preserve muscle mass and metabolic rate while dieting
      4. Will prevent weight loss plateaus better than diet alone.
      I am also the worlds biggest fan of low-carb/keto diets. I will make lot of videos next year about how keto diets can transform health in ways that no other diet can (in my opinion).
      Keep up the great work!
