I'm 5'3" and lost 210+ pounds. I say "+" because I broke the scale at 340 pounds, at which point you have to pay medical personnel to put you on a freight scale and humiliate you in public. I wasn't that curious! So, I know I was more than 340 pounds, but I don't know how much more. I lost the weight in my 60s, so unsurprisingly, I ended up with loose skin. I have discovered dermatology treatments: RF (radio frequency therapy) helped a lot. I also do micro-needling at home, which also stimulates new (tighter!) collagen formation and red light therapy (I got a flexible therapy red light combined with infrared light. 'belt' off of Amazon). All of these treatments and devices together improved my skin considerably. I'm still a little wobbly and crepey in parts - but I'm in my 70s, so I give myself a pass!

Speaking of the science, feel free to share the science that says that any fast longer than 3 days is bad for your health.
The longest recorded medically monitored fast is almost 400 days. George Cahill's studies that proved the power of ketones in the brain involved fasting for 5-6 weeks. A former NFL player just completed a 40-day fast without any health issues.

    • @TheImmortuary
      @TheImmortuary Před 7 měsíci +25

@@KrispKiwi It seems counterintuative I know but its like this. When your body is in hard ketosis, your autophagy is working at 100%. That means it not only uses fat for energy, but also canabalizes old fat membranes, intercellular gunk, and un-needed excess skin tissue. Its actively looking for anything and everything 'unnecessary' to turn into energy.
I have a family of 4 and when one gets sick, we all do, except when Im fasting. The last time I was on a fast and the family came down with the Norwalk virus, all except me. My daughter even coughed directly into my open mouth and I did not get a sniffle.
My immune system was kicked into overdrive, nothing could touch it. Any incoming virus or bacteria was seen as food.

One of the best videos with scientific support as it pertains to autophagy and loose skin I have watched thus far.
I have had some great success with consistently doing extended dirty fasting since February 5th. This includes fasting of 72, 96, 240, and currently towards the end of 144 hrs.
I've tried textbook extended water fasting and ADF in the past and although I enjoyed the mental clarity aspect; I didn't like the side effects so to speak. However, the way I've done it thus far has allowed me to be consistent and it's fairly easy for me to stick to it which is my overall goal more than anything in addition to weightloss and improved body composition by losing inches.
With that said, based on your vid I am going to incorporate resistance training in addition to my walks and yoga. And lastly I need to work on getting more rest. I already do clean keto for diet.

I completely agree that combining keto and IF is a total game changer. I am currently ketovore, and usually have 2 carnivore meals on my eating days. I plan on doing a full carnivore experiment in the future. I want to wait until my next weight loss phase. I am focusing on building muscle right now, so I like to bump my carbs up a tiny bit.
I will have a couple of videos coming out in the next 1-2 weeks about how to get better sleep while fasting. This is the most common complaint that I hear with longer fasts, so I want to see how I can help :)

The skin adjustments take years. It is so slow that the change does not seem notice-able, but it does happen. I have been doing 5-n-2 for awhile, with the 2 periods being 36-hr fasts. It is really important to include resistance training in the fast period. Prioritize protein when feeding.

New subscriber! I’ve NEVER seen a CZcamsr who answers nearly every single comment with more than a brief reply or a heart. 😍 This is the first of your videos I’ve watched, and I will be binge watching as many as I can! I’m nearly 3 years Keto (almost 69 yo) and I regularly fast 16/8, used to do a weekly 41 hr fast, which I need to resume. I’m usually two meals a day, but I very often switch it up with OMAD (eating only breakfast.) Over these 3 years I’ve lost…and kept off…36 lbs, totally eliminated years of arthritis pain. I would love if you did a video on the differences between Keto and Ketovore. Thank you for such real, honest, and inspiring content, so well presented! 🥰

I have been wondering about this. I lost the weight (~100 lbs.) as my Covid project, but at 74 and T2 diabetic have been pondering how to move forward to get rid of all the extra skin. Now I have a better idea of how to start. I'm a bit of a night owl so probably getting more and better sleep would be a good first step. @@GrowGrayMatter I’ve tried keto before but the use of substitute sweeteners and the commercialization of a lot of the “keto” treats would trigger my cravings and it would be short lived success. To me it was to close to the fence and made it easy to quit.
Carnivore for me allowed me to not easily but battle the addition to sweets and win. It also improved my fasting because my cravings went away. For me I love fasting first and foremost and I find carnivore pairs with that amazingly and both of them together are the one thing that’s allowed me to push past previous plateaus and set a new bar for myself goal wise.

I was very compliant to ADA recommendations and using insulin kept my A1C below 6 and all of my other labs well within normal range. I have made every weight loss mistake you can think of. I am just so thankful that I finally figured it all out.
You are doing so many great things. Keto is a great idea for you. Plus adding protein and exercise is HUGE. I would say just stick with the plan as your body heals as much as it can. I personally would stick with the ADF for now rather than adding in too many long fasts. They will speed up the BG improvements, but they will also speed up lean mass loss as well. I don't want to see you trade one problem for another.

Thank you for sharing your story. I went full Carnivore, because I was influenced that this was going to be the best way to eat for optimal health. I am not a diabetic and I am not overweight I chose to try this way of eating to see if I could optimize my health. Well, after 12 weeks I started to get some belly. Fat started not feeling well and my hair was falling out. So how in the world could this be? Because everybody says how wonderful this diet is. I was eating ribeyes butter and eggs. So strict. Never cheated no carbs. Within 12 weeks.
My a one c went from a 5.2 to a 5.4. Which we say of course is not terrible but why Did it go up? Because one would say this is impossible with no carbs. Right? Well-being a nurse myself. I really started to deep drive into what was happening here. I stumbled across stephanie Keto girl on youtube. She literally got me squared away in no time. She goes a little bit against the grain. But I'll tell you what she is tried in true and she knows what she's doing. I got my A1C down to a 4.8 within the next 12 weeks with her guidance. Best $175 i ever spent..if you dont want to get a consult with her at least binge on her utubes❤. Good luck!!!!!

Thank you for sharing@@jennysiepka9900. I am so happy to hear that you have found what works best for you.
I work with people that are doing really well on carnivore, while some don't see any changes, and a few even get worse. The reality is that there isn't a perfect human diet for everyone. The key is to experiment and try different approaches until you find what works best for you.
Keto is a great example. I am the world's biggest fan of keto. I feel absolutely amazing. But this doesn't mean it is right for everyone. Some people don't make ketones, or use them, nearly as well as I do. And some people feel amazing when they add carbs back in, while that makes me sluggish and sore.
The beauty, and frustration, of being human is that we are all just living one long science experiment. Hopefully everyone figures out what works for them sooner rather than later ")

I am 71 and a personal trainer and health coach. Doing a 36 hour 'fast' when I came across your channel. The quotation marks around the word fast is there because I do add some butter to keep energy levels high.I have never had any weight issues so diet has always been about energy and performance.I think as body fat goes down, the butter helps me get into ketosis faster.
On eating days,my carbs fluctuate between 0 and 15% of calories so not a lot of glycogen to clear. When I was younger (20's to early 60's) I did strict water fasts and had lots of energy but now I seem to need a butter assist to achieve the same level of mental clarity and physical energy. Certainly looks like I will be sharing your videos with clients. Thank you 😊.

I am a huge fan of keto for a long list of reasons. You will see a LOT of keto content from me next year. I have pages and pages of things that I want to talk about.
I am also a big fan of 2MAD. I don't use it much myself. I prefer to eat 3-4 meals because my goal is to maximize muscle size and exercise performance. But I think 2MAD is a great way to lose fat. I am a much bigger fan of 2MAD than OMAD
I compare ADF and OMAD here. You will see why I would rather see you go to ADF compared to OMAD:

I tried fasting for many years... full 30-day fast... 7-day fast.. 24hrs..on -off etc and plenty of others.... went full keto for a year... and workout morning and night....I no longer fast and eat 3 meals day...every 3-4hrs. For me, the skin tightening wasn't until I started eating healthier (imo).....introducing veggies and fruits back into my diet...along with proteins and healthy fats... I no longer get bloated or constipated!...I can truly eat until I am full and have fully eaten until I am fully satisfied which is amazing for me, and my tummy never gains weight and just continues to look healthier and better, tighter and stronger abs...skin looks as good as it did 20 yrs ago and muscles tone throughout my entire body is as good as it was 20 yrs ago if not better... 32-inch waist... down from 41... All in all... my message would be to anyone that no matter what any expert tells you ... everyone is different... You won't die if you eat some fruit and veggies... unless you have a serious condition you're treating. Just do what works for you... please never just follow what you are seeing is working for others because I wasted so much time and money looking the same and feeling tired and terrible for so long because I thought all the youtube Dr's were telling me I had to follow their rules or I would get diabetes or cancer.... just eat a healthy rounded diet 80% clean whole foods and 20% of what eve you enjoy daily and exercise every day and STAY CONSISTENT! do what works for you... good luck! : ) OH... most importantly...this takes many months/years!! not a few weeks.. to tighten the skin... just like mentioned in this video.. But it does tighten...(also apply body moisturizer to the area every day!) You just have to stay consistent with your routine..even when you think nothing is getting any better...it will!

I have loose flabby skin on face from rapid weight loss..it's been about two months...noted what I thought was tightening up but then it's like bam...everything still loose and stretched...will fasting make it better or worse ? It's really bummed me out, even tho I'm happy I've lost the weight...almost makes me look fatter ? Lost definition (that was filled by fat), now the skin just kinda hangs there...I have been in a caloric deficit for months...I do still struggle with a coffee /nicotine addiction so maybe that's what's keeping everything in limbo?

@@nadating Hey, I'm not the dr, but I can relate to what you're saying.. I lost 4 stone a few years ago and experienced a similar thing, by losing weight too fast (when you're over the age of 30 is a bad idea) I used to be able to go without eating for a few weeks/jump on an exercise bike every day for 1hr and slim my waistline back to where it was before when I was in my 20s, and looked great! But after the age of 30.. the fat loss takes on a new identity because you have less collagen as you age, the skin does not spring back as it used as the body fat starts to reduce and you start getting skin sagging. I would always choose to go for the slower weight loss over the fast weight loss to lower the risk of fat loss in the face as well. Once you lose the youthful padding/fats in the face they are almost impossible to get back unless you start adding weight to the rest of your body again. (Some people use fillers as they age) I lost a bit on my face but not enough to feel I need fillers... but still it's really disappointing when you see yourself starting to age.. the middle area of the face on a younger person is fuller and as we age the cheeks get thinner.... fast weight loss speeds this up. The Dr will have more, better info than me... this was just my own experience. Good luck

Thank u for mentioning the time frame. I lost almost 15 lbs rapidly and while everything seemed tight at first I started to get or seem flabby...I was overloading on coffee + the shitty creamer + a nicotine habit and have struggled to just eat period ...and the sagging face and body that I have (it's not too extreme as I'm not looking fully like a basset hound, but it's just not enough to make me look aged and older) it's like I lost a volume and the fat is squishy and stretchy on my face arms and legs...was happy with the weight loss but not this...felt like it's never gonna go back to normal

      @serenityjewel Před 2 měsíci +1

Regular healthy eating DOES NOT tighten loose skin from significant weight loss. It might help if someone has lost a few lbs and they're flabby but it's not going to help if someone has lost 100 lbs. This comment is from someone pushing "eat healthy and that's all you need" and that doesn't work for the vast majority of people. If anything, don't listen to people in the comments who may be lying just to sound good or to push an agenda because they don't like the video. I seriously doubt this person fasted for years or ever.

You might lose more weight if you switched to OMAD, but they key is to make sure you are losing as much fat as you can while losing as little (or no) lean mass like muscle along the way.

This was great. Autophagy is definitely catabolic but can be cycled. This is the first video I’ve seen that’s made me realize the importance of sleep as it relates to autophagy. I began fasting one day (36 hours) a week earlier this year but I’ve seen my sleep score improve all around and didn’t think it was related.
Seeing this makes me wonder if it’s a virtuous cycle where good sleep or autophagy can help the other.

    • @GrowGrayMatter
      @GrowGrayMatter  Před 8 měsíci +6

This is a great question. I think that everything is related. I call it spiraling into control.
Look at my 200-pound weight loss story. I started by going low-carb/fasting and taking a few walks. This led to some weight loss, which allowed me to take longer walks. Which led to improved sleep. Which led to more weight loss. The weight loss (and decreased inflammation from fasting) led to less joint pain. Then I was able to start lifting weights, which sped up the process even further. You see the point :)
Here is my favorite example of how related everything is. This video shows 8 ways that poor sleep is driving fat gain:
      czcams.com/video/uw_CHTiN1LU/video.html
I am currently following a 5:2 plan that has me fasting 36 hours twice a week. I feel amazing:

Last year I lost about 20 pounds.
I was consuming big quantities of bone broth as well as collagen powder. My skin actually became more elastic than it was before. I was amazed because i am 50 years old and I had loose skin and cellulite since I was a teenager!
The only problem was that I didnt do enough strength training and I was probably not eating enough to gain muscle mass. So my skin was a little loose, like a deflated ballon. I was also feeling a little weak and eventually I lost my motivation and gained back the fat. Which is very unfortunate.
I believe that if I had persisted with weight training and more protein etc, i would have seen great results.
Thanks for this series, because this time I am already making better choises.

I’ve been doing OMAD for about a month now and it’s helped me a lot.
My weight loss is moderate which is ok, the first couple of weeks I lost about 11lbs and it’s kind of slowing down so I’m assuming that was mostly water weight. I’m happy because I no longer have depression and anxiety, my breathing has gotten better (I didn’t even know I had an issue with breathing until I started doing this), I don’t crave alcohol anymore (I was a binge drinking and would binge drink every 1-2 weeks) on top of binge drinking I would binge eat from being hungover and I obviously don’t do that anymore, I just feel overall so much more happier and healthier and I don’t want to ever go back.
Weight loss is just a bonus for me at this point even though I started this initially to lose weight.
People get worried when I tell them I fast because they think fasting means starving yourself which isn’t at all true. Once I explain to them the benefits and all the research I’ve looked at plus show them my daily meal they realise I’m not crazy and I’m doing something good for myself 😅
I try to for daily walks, I completed a 15km walk over the weekend and could have kept going if it didn’t decide to storm out haha.
Definitely the best decision I’ve made for myself and I’m looking forward to the future.

This is a topic I am very interested in. About 4 years ago, I started IF and embarked on an overall healthier lifestyle, and lost over 60 pounds. As a result I have a significant amount of loose skin around my waist, butt and thighs, even though I am now a quite lean 174 pounds. I typically fast 17-18 hrs per day and I do vigorous exercise 3x per week, but I haven't seen any noticeable reduction on my loose skin. My goal is to do a 48 hour fast every month, but I find it extremely difficult to get past 20 hrs or so.

Thank you for sharing. Congratulations on your amazing progress! You should be proud no matter what :)
Watch part 1 for more information about how I try to put loose skin into context. I understand the struggle of dealing with it, but I truly hope that it doesn't ruin how you feel about your health transformation:
      czcams.com/video/NdojPEPtSuU/video.html
I also understand how longer fasts get difficult as you get leaner. It makes sense. Your body has less fuel to draw from as you get to your goal weight.
Have you ever heard of a "fat fast"? I plan on doing a video dedicated to it, but I did talk about it in my recent video where I shared my current fasting plan.
      czcams.com/video/FTKsq7b7Gvs/video.html
Fat fasting is a way to extend your fast by consuming fat. It isn't technically a fast because of the calories, but fat doesn't break a fast in the same way that carbs or protein would.
Near the end of the video I shared I walk through how I do it. I use a combination of MCT oil and ketone supplements. It might be a great way to get you "over the hump" and into longer fasts. Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions on the topic. I will try to make a video about it in the coming months.

Where are all the before and after photos if autophagy is effective? I don't mean to be rude at all but this topic is a bit of a bugbear of mine. We're on CZcams do there should be plenty of people with significant improvement in loose skin but it just doesn't look like there is. If anyone can post links to people with success I really would like to see them. I don't mean to be a downer (I'll be fasting myself) but I'm not convinced.

    • @GrowGrayMatter
      @GrowGrayMatter  Před 8 měsíci +5

You are not being rude at all. It is an honest question. I agree with you in many ways. I have done (and still do) everything that I talk about in this series, and I still have some loose skin. I would be amazed if anyone could lose 200 pounds and not have any. Even if I didn't, I couldn't promise the same for you because of all the reasons I mentioned in Part 1 of this series (genetics, age, rate of fat loss, etc). There aren't any guarantees at all. I just want to help people pull as many levers as they can to minimize their loose skin with massive weight loss.
I have worked with people who have lost 50-80 pounds with zero loose skin. Beyond that I have never seen someone with zero loose skin. But every person that loses 100+ pounds without needing skin removal surgery is a huge victory in my book.
This is also one of the reasons I brought up the fact that Dr. Fung has repeatedly said that none of his patients have needed skin removal surgery. I have heard him say it at least 6 times on podcasts, and I have seen it in writing here:
      blog.thefastingmethod.com/how-much-protein-is-excessive/
He has worked with thousands of patients. I love the guy, but he should have hundreds of before and afters that he could share. I hope that he does someday.
I wish you the best of luck on your journey. Go back and watch Part 1 (link in pinned comment) if you want to hear my overall thoughts about loose skin.

@@GrowGrayMatter thanks for the comprehensive reply and I will be looking at part one and I appreciate the realistic approach. I think if Dr Fung is going to repeatedly make that claim then he definitely should be showing before and after photos, and lots of them.
I've also thought that maybe it's not just or even autophagy but more to do with having the right nutrition so that the skin can be healthy and tight, so perhaps collagen or even just adequate protein? Oh well, it's a bit of a rabbit hole and I'm glad you're going down it. Cheers.

I like some of the transitions, but sometimes they're a bit too much and are seemingly random. Since we use these persistent elements that transition across pages to indicate some kind of relationship between the previous and the next states, some of your transitions confuse me because I can't immediately see what the relationship is.
For example 2:23 of the selectable tiles (which weren't selected) transition into being two switches... does that mean anything? are they related in some way? I see this as random and a bad use of the design language. However, at 1:14 I like the transition from switches to the ticks on a paper, that makes sense to me. Epic presentation tho

Brilliant THANK YOU !! I've been wondering about this, I put on a lot of hypothyroid, menopause & stress weight (cortisol & insulin resistance) in past few years mostly on torso & boobs, so uncomfy. I was a carb-addict but been low carb for quite a while now, & a few months edging towards now nearly carnivore, just occasional avocado, sometimes brazil & pecan & walnuts, sauerkraut, chinese leaf & mackerel, or half a peeled sliced cucumber (being careful about oxylates as I had some symptoms), natural yoghurt, herb tea, stevia drops..some reduction in ankle edema but not much change in goiter or skin issues or weight.. I've also been edging to intermittent fasting, currently on 2 or 1 meal a day, but generally in evening. I realise lots of timing & menu, stress, sleep, exercise, breathing etc elements to work on improving. I had got to conclusion that autoophagy best way to lose the weight & avoid loose skin etc, I wouldnt be willing to cope with surgery for that but realise it can be a serious issue.. so am very grateful to learn about autophagy here, & more about fasting, which i still find very daunting. Recently been recommended that women's hormones require some different accommodations for fasting & to read Fast Like A Girl by Dr Mindy Pelz. Barbara O'Neill recommends HIIT exercising over other kinds.. & we are all different.. feels such a minefield, & being advised to check with one's doctor is a joke here in UK, unless a private functional doc, or a chiropractor, acupuncturist etc most of them haven't a clue, & certainly not specialist info like autophagy

Thank you so much for sharing. It sounds like you are working on your health one step at a time. Good for you!
It is absolutely a minefield. You hit the nail on the head when you said that everyone is different. It is super easy to make blanket recommendations, but the only real way to know what works for you is to try different things until you find your own sweet spot.
Fasting and exercise for women is a great example. I have looked at dozens of studies on this topic over the last few weeks. I am doing research for a video series about sex differences with fasting and exercise. The only thing I am sure of after all of that research is that there is nothing that will work for everyone. Some people need to fast differently based on their cycle. Others don't. Some women benefit more from HIIT, while it wrecks others. The only thing that seems to work every time is to listen to your body and change things up as needed.
I am ketovore myself right now. I am doing really good with my new plan. I hope that you continue to fine tune things until you reach your goals. Reach out if you have any questions. I am here to help
