  • The Promised Land Saints
    (Heb 11:23-31)
    I. A Prodigy (v. 23-29)
    A. God selects Moses to be Israel’s deliverer. (v.23)
    a. The emphasis in Hebrews is on events surrounding Moses’ birth and parents. [cf., Ex 1:15-22]
    b. Reconciling the ethical dilemma of the midwives lie - Contextual Absolutism or One’s Actual Duty.
    c. Biblical Examples of One’s Actual Duty in Ethical Dilemmas
    1. 1 Samuel 16:1-6 (Samuel uses deception by God’s command)
    2. Joshua 8:1-35 (Joshua deceives his enemies in warfare)
    3. Acts 5:27-29 (Peter & John disobey human authority)
    B. Moses reject’s his position as a royal family member for a spiritual one (v.24-26)
    a. Two Characteristic of Growing Faith in Moses
    1. Be Decisive About Faith’s Source- Growing in faith does not depend on quantity, but the object of our faith, namely God.
    2. Be Dependent on Faith’s Source - Always remain dependent on God, who gives us grace and power to accomplish His will. But always accomplish His service with an attitude of humility. Do what God expects you to do.
    b. Factors that Prompted Moses Decision
    1. Evidences of God’s Faithfulness [Dt. 16:15-18]
    C. Moses’ faith is seen in His Works (v.27-29)
    a. Passover
    b. Red Sea Crossing [cf., Ex 14:31]
    II. A People (v. 30)
    A. By faith, the Second generation of Israel conquered Jericho, an impregnable city.
    III. A Prostitute (v. 31)
    A. By faith, Rahab saved the spies and by faith she was saved from her sin.
    a. Rahab’s Justification before God - she was saved from sin’s penalty by faith in God. (Josh. 2:9-11)
    b. Rahab’s Justification before Men - sending the spies out another way instead of turning them in to the authorities. (Heb. 11:31; cf., James 2:25)
    Point to Ponder:
To outsiders, living by faith may seem foolish and sometimes even dangerous. But faith in God must overshadow our feelings. Trust the Lord like Moses, Israel, and Rahab did and if we do, we’ll be able to continue growing onward and upward, looking for the city, whose architect and builder is God.
