  • How the Righteous Roll: The Patriarchal Saints (Part I)
    Hebrews 11:8-19
    I. Pilgrims - Abraham & Sarah (v. 8-19)
    A. Abraham was a faithful pilgrim, demonstrated by obedience [cf., Gen 12:1-3]. (v.8-10)
    B. Sarah was a faithful pilgrim, also demonstrated by obedience (v. 11-12)
    C. A Summary on Faith & Promises (v.13-16)
    a. All these previously mentioned saints (Abel - Sarah) lived by faith.
    b. They did not receive all the promises that were granted to them in their lifetime.
    c. They believed in the future fulfilled promises by faith.
    d. They believed they were earthly strangers and pilgrims and lived according to that belief.
    e. They were seeking an ultimate destination with God and not an earthly city. [cf., 2 Cor 5:15-20; 1 Pet 2:11-12; Rm 2:4-8]
    D. Faith in God must be exercised when enduring great difficulty (v. 17-19).
    a. Two possible views of Isaac as a type:
    1. Isaac’s sacrifice event prefigures a type of Christ.
    2. Isaac’s sacrifice event prefigures the future resurrection and fulfillment of Covenant promises.
    Point to Ponder:
God’s promises can be trusted, especially as it relates to His return. The important thing is to be ready, are you personally ready to meet Christ?
