  • At NAMM 2018, Chase Bliss Audio founder Joel Korte chatted with us about the company's new Condor and Thermae pedals. We got a chance to try out the Condor earlier this year, and now it's the Thermae's turn. This imaginative stompbox is capable of the warm delays you'd expect from an analog circuit, as well as super unique and otherworldly modulated tones. Watch as Andy takes a dip in the warm pool of Thermae tone.

    This pedal is an instrument all to itself. It's revolutionary. One the most creative tools I've used as a guitar player. One of the most unique effects ever. You get lost in this pedal.

    The fact it can do all of that with analog parts (even w/ a digital controller) is crazy. Joel builds the coolest stuff.

      $500 though?

    • @davidleslie1127
      @davidleslie1127 Před 6 lety +11

      Not really judging the value/cost of it, just saying I'm amazed at how much can be done with a digital controller and 4x3005s. I can't think of any other pitch shifting analog pedals with glide? I've had that in my digital rack stuff like Lexicon PCM80/81s and Eventide Eclipses, but first I've seen it in an analog pedal.

    • @srkoval
      @srkoval Před 6 lety +1

      I was thinking the same thing. That's damn expensive for what it does uniquely and its not like you'd be using this often. The delay is outstanding and that phase sounded beautiful so if you don't have those two effects 5 times over already in your arsenal, it way be worth the price tag but how many songs do you want to pitch-shift your echos? How many songs can you do that on before it sounds like you're a one-trick pony? I'm thinking one.

    • @davidleslie1127
      @davidleslie1127 Před 6 lety +1

      Scott Koval I think I would use it the same way I use those racks - recording. Live use would be really difficult. The other good use, and I don’t do this myself, would be in building samples. I could see a DJ using the Thermae to build a massive library of samples that are original. If I still spun I would do that, but these days people don’t even spin vinyl, so maybe that’s not even a thing anymore. Dunno. I just like it whenever someone pushes a technological boundary. Joel does that. And I think it’s fun to take those products and figure out how to best use them.

    • @unoaotroa
      @unoaotroa Před 6 lety +5

      Scott Koval You underestimate the market for this pedal. Gigging musicians playing songs are not the target for this. Ambient loopers, synth players, livecoders, contemporary composers and sound explorers in general are. I'm the latter and this is exactly what I've been looking for and yes, the price may be kind of steep for this product, but there is no other analog delay that offers as much sonic possibilities and controlability in the market right now.

      I use a TC Quintessence and a second-hand Source Audio Nemesis. I have other delays, fuzzes, reverbs, some pedals with fx loops and a MIDI controller (ES-8) but there's a lot you could do with, for example, a Quintessence, a Vox Trike Fuzz, and the Nemesis.
      Or just get a Line6 M5 or M9. They have a lot of crazy sounds in there.

      mindbodylightsound10 I don’t believe that’s some arbitrary price, the components needed, and hand built in USA, and all the r&d required, and it’s a small company... yeah it’s expensive but it’s not greed driving the price. Joel said somewhere that they barely make any money on their delay pedals even at those high prices. I can’t afford it but damn if it’s not impressive both sonically and from a engineering standpoint.

      Sid R. One SHARC DSP chip is in the neighborhood of $10. That’s the chip behind the strymon stuff. Flash the programing and the board is ready to go. 1 Xvive mn3005 reissue chip is in the neighborhood of $20 and this pedals uses four of them. Yeah I’m sure there is price breaks for quantity but then each pedal has to be calibrated by hand with an oscilloscope and that’s a lot of time to pay an employee a decent living wage. Then adding custom made and anodized knobs, high quality switches jacks. Vactrols for the dip switches, marketing blah blah blah things add up. Small batch manufacturing is tough and the boutique pedal market is insanely niche in the grand scheme of things. $500 is not for everyone but the people that want it can find a way. Just my .02

    CBA makes amazing pedals. So much versatility, and in a small pedal. The 1 criticism I have is they're too expensive for most guitarists. If they made versions of their pedals with less features but a lower price, they'd have way more buyers. EHX does this and they've done well with it. CBA's a high end brand, but their prices really limit their popularity & sales
