- FIRST LOOK: The R2 is here and Rivian is extending it's lineup. On the outside you will find the unique signature front end, 21in wheels with off-road tires and rear lift gate with window that drops. Powering the R2 are up to (3) electric motors. Is the 2026 Rivian R2 a BETTER midsize SUV than a GMC Hummer EV?

I reserved one the moment RJ rolled it out at the reveal event. I can’t wait for it! Great coverage, as always, Joe, but you missed some other great stuff. There are 2 glove boxes, there’s the signature driver’s side door flashlight, the passenger side door mini charger/hand warmer, the flip out shelf in the inside of the lift gate, the pop-out rear windows and the drawer in the center console. Thanks for the fantastic video, though! Love seeing more of this awesome EV SUV I can’t wait to get my hands on!
True, same here reserved one. Joe does not pay much attention to EV's, he would never know many details like a Rivian owner would. He needed more research imho.

Also, both front seats fold flat and the back passenger door windows roll all the way down (without the need of a split window).
I'm not into EVs, but I love this. If they can bring this to market on time at the promised price, Rivian will have pretty much secured their future.

i also had a camping in mind. i know it doesnt have a 3rd row but it would be nice to have cup holders and storage pocket in the wheel arch area for car camping.
This is probably the best EV package I've seen so far. Not too large such that range and charging times will be impacted, but enough useable space such that you can actually haul a reasonable amount of stuff! I can't wait for the "D2" trim 😉

OMG I have always wanted a R1T, but couldn't afford the 90K price tag. This Rivian R2 is SWEET and if the starting price is really 45K with one motor and it has most of the features of this model without ballooning to 60K, I have found my next vehicle.
There’s also the smaller and hopefully cheaper R3

I like that they finally moved over to the telsa port for a few things. When it comes to current charging issues with the css Network. Issues include dead chargers, 350kw charging down to 50kw . 50kw is slow depending on the ev. When it comes to this , i think they did a great job with it. Personally mine will be in blue, black or red .
I wanted the R1S and came close to getting one but ultimately it was too expensive for me. The R2 is the perfect compromise and I can't wait to get my hands on one.

If it starts at $45k, it's gonna steal all the Honda Prologue buyers and be the segment leader as well.
Prologue pricing is a non starter vs Tesla Y.
Checked out Prologue a few days ago. The interior is so cheaply made, I wouldn’t even pay $30000 for it, the sticker price is $55000.

Yeah the size is about perfect on that vehicle and it s proportions. I love how they did a nice job integrating the touch scree n in a portrait manner and is neatly integrated into the style of the dashboard.. If it could deliver 350-400 miles of range on dual motors it would be perfect.

I think adding a mini screen for the AC controls for the back row like the new Model 3, should do wonders. That’s the only improvement I can see the car might need. Everything else is amazing. Still looking at when the R3 going to be out on reservation.

Love this R2. It’s stylish. the technology and the body design is stunning, and at 45K I think it’s a steal and a game changer. Just need to know more about the range.. great job Rivian. Thank you Joe n Lori. First class work as always.
The buttons on the Steering wheel are really smart, that will be so much easier to use while still being clean with many functions.

Overall loving Rivian, only critiques on this vehicle are the cup holders, the plastic floors and the giant plastic open bin below the glove box? Just seems a bit cheap and lazy but the seats and the dash configuration all look nice!
Can you get a rear wiper? Does it allow bidirectional charging?
I was at the auto show yesterday, and afterwards me and my friend went to that exact location and saw that R2. I really like that design and concept

Great video. All it's missing is CarPlay and physical vent controls and it'd be perfect. The move to digital vent controls is so dumb and unnecessary I wish they'd stop.
I am really excited about the R2. I have reserved one. I hope they can deliver on the prices as well. I love the R1S but it is way out of my price range. Overall the vehicle looks cool and I am looking forward to possibly buying one in 2026.

I love it! I've never owned an EV and wouldn't buy one because the charging infrastructure sucks and is basically non existent in my area of BFE, except Tesla! Superchargers are pretty much everywhere but I don't want a Tesla and won't spend 75k on any vehicle but now that Rivian is adopting the NACS I'm in like Flynn! IF that price sticks, and I hope it does, Rivian R2 will be my first BEV! And, I don't have a home charging option at the moment...
You can get home charging for a cohple thousand dollars and that's all you would mostly beed for everyday driving

I like it but Im really not a fan of steering wheel controls that serve multiple functions with the same button. When using cruise control seems like itd be dangerous. Im sure it’s fairly intuitive, but I would preferred a more traditional setup

That is the most appealing BEV so far as I'm concerned. Like the size. Well finished. That could entice me to go electric for a second car.

Great looking vehicle. Love the moving rear glass. This car almost looks like Volvo designed it. I would love having this vehicle. A winner if they can meet the 45k price. I sincerely doubt this car will ship below 60k. Love the haptic feedback scroll wheels.
I love it. I hope there are 12v outlets in the rear and the centre consoles in addition to what they already have, since I have a 12v fridge, a 12v rice cooker, a 12v slow cooker and a bunch of other 12v appliances that I take camping. Would be awesome if the moon roof could have a motorized blind so you can black out the morning sun when camping inside it. Aside from that, as soon as they make it for the UK/AU markets, I'm buying one!
Make the second row seating adjustable. I hope the hatch height is adjustable also. I’m 6’5 and need those extra 2-3” to feel comfortable. Would like to see a courtesy light for the frunk.👍

I am on the list for an R2. Looks like a perfect replacement for my 4Runner, and I am ready to make the change to having an EV in my household. Kudos to Rivian for the retracting rear window! Excellent feature, and pretty rare these days. Enormously useful. Other features? I'm hoping there are heated and ventilated seats, and Carplay please. I was happy to hear about some sort of partnership with Apple, as my ONLY negative about Rivian is the lack of CarPlay support. Hopefully that changes by 2026. Can't wait!
As an R1S owner, I placed an order immediately. I LOVE my R1S (pre-order pricing), however, I don't NEED this big of a vehicle. What it will come down to, is towing capabilities, the R1S is the BEST vehicle I have ever driven or owned.
Now, Joe you missed a TON of additional features that are STANDARD on the R2.
I like the general design and interior. The only thing that stops me from being a buyer is that there is no service center within 150 miles of me. I don’t know how long I’d be without a car if I need a tech to come out to check it out
One comment, I'm also 6 ft tall and I noticed the rear tail gate seems to hang a bit low, like I'm going to hit my head frequently. Rivian should consider extending the lift height a few more inches, as much as feasible.
RJ and Frank, please provide some RWD trims at launch. I really cannot afford anything more than 45k and I am not waiting for R3. I am a 2021 & 2023 R1T quad owner through my parents (who have an EEAP vehicle as well). I am 23 year old college graduate that is currently employed by Rivian and living at home temporarily.
My configuration will be RWD. I understand that the more expensive ones (Dual + Tri) need to be prioritized for profit reasons. But RWD will be easier/quicker to manufacture. Also a lot of the markets that you will be successful in (especially in the beginning) are warm/non snow states. Those regions will be configuring RWD more and if the goal is to get as many in the market as possible, then maybe RWD should also get some prioritization too.
I reserved one. My only concern when i saw the R2 in Miami - is the hatch height - Joe, you are 6'0 and I am 6'2" and you were hunching over when the hatch was open it needs to open higher.
Was planning on upgrading my Polestar 2 to the polestar 4 next year; not anymore, I’ll get the R2 dual motors.

How is the driver's leg room compared to a Tesla Y ? The Y has amazing leg room for this 6'3" stiff senior. Joe was looking a little cramped behind the wheel of the R2. I'm worried.

Reserved mine as soon as I learned it was coming! The biggest thing I'm curious about though is the quality of the sound system...such an audiophile that really does make or break a car for me. Fingers crossed!
From what I heard Rivian doesn't sound very well!

I have a deposit on one and don't have clear insight on whether it has Apple CarPlay, ventilated seats or a heated steering wheel.
Did you happen to notice any of those features being included?
I'm making assumptions on front and rear parking sensors as well as some form of blind spot monitoring and self-driving.
I did some research on that some days ago. Seems Rivian does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It's a big miss from that front.

Same. Got them as air-conditioned seats, for the first time, in my 2004 Lincoln Aviator and said never again will I not have them. I hope Rivian gets this right for both of us.

Tesla made a huge mistake opening up their Supercharger network to competitors, giving away their competitive advantage of the largest most reliable coast to coast charging network. Even a Tesla owner like myself would go Rivian or Porsche now that they're getting NACs charging.
That's the only reason I'm here entertaining the idea of a non-Tesla as our next EV. Supercharging my Tesla hasn't been an issue but with 3rd parties and placement of their charging ports, that can easily become a problem.

The lucid air grand touring with the Tesla port is a good setup. The range and charging network will make it a good ev for trips for some people.

You'll be able to get an excellent deal on Lucid when they're having their going out of business clearance sale. And yes, it's coming.
The Wireless charger needs a divider between phones and front of charger. So many complaints online from R1 owners that phones slide around on that charging mat.

One thin I'd appreciate for future early looks at unreleased vehicles would be if you could state what your hopeful price would be. I know you don't have the information yet of course but knowing what YOU would like the price range to be helps to get an idea of what other cars in this category should be priced at.

I'm not an EV fan. The Rivian is the only one that I like. I think they are a more thoughtful EV company and put more into R&D than the other EV brands.
LIke the R2 and put a reservation in. Really like the R1S as well, but am concerned about Rivian going bankrupt. Hard to buy an $80k SUV when the company isn't doing well. They are burning through cash and have not made a profit lose about $40k on all R1 they make. I hope they can survive, as the R2 will be there main seller SUV.

the only thing im thinking of is the cost of replacing the battery once its out of warranty.
I’m afraid to buy this car because I’m gonna have to replace its engine of warranty in about 15 years. That’s how you sound. They complete nothing. Most batteries perform above expectations for 10 to 15 years. Most warranties are 8 to 10 years. Incredibly rare to have anything wrong with your battery besides an act of god. It’s basically using a gas car in those situations. I’m sure you’re gonna follow up with how EV’s blow up. Even though that’s just as rare or happens even less then gas cars catching fire. I understand how scary new technology can be there should be concerned, but don’t overexaggerate..
The Rivian R1T Quad-large pack warranty is eight years or 175,000 miles. That is probably better than most engine warranties from anyone. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There are plenty of other people out there with decades of experience in the car business. They're all saying the same thing. It's a matter of time before Rivian goes bust.
It's a cool-looking car and it looks to be quality made. However that doesn't change the fact that they are losing tons of money and have no plan to reverse that.
Some of their manufacturing plans have been put on hold. And word in the automotive field is that it's not temporarily on hold. It's permanent.
Buy a battery down the road for this thing... HA.. not likely.
@@smarticus6384 let me put this in context for your. I have a 2015 ford Fusion with 77,000 miles. Does it sound that old? Not really, but it’s almost 10 years old and out of warranty by now. Now let’s say anything other than the transmission or engine breaks it’s probably going to be $500-$1500 to fix. Now let’s say the engine blows, a used one may be 4 or 5K to put in, now let’s say the transmission goes out maybe 3 or 4K. In all likelihood these things won’t happen either for another 5-10 years at such low mileage per year. Because engines don’t degrade like batteries do.
Now let’s say I bought a 2012 Tesla Model S instead like an idiot. After a decade the batteries got old or are about to fail. Well I just googled the price and I found an invoice in a forum.
“the price, clearly stated on the invoice, is $20,000 for the battery alone. In fact, I get $20,333.80 for parts alone, plus whatever labor would really have been.”

I think they did great but the R2 should have been on the market yesterday since Rivian needs more affordable models, but I will be pleasantly surprised if when the R2 launches it does actually end up starting around 45k. Also I am surprised Joe went the full review without mentioning R2-D2 once 😁
He doesn't strike me as a big Star Wars fan. I will say that I'm sure there will be a handful of R2's that get an R2-D2 wrap!
