Love Van Morrison. That performance in the Last Waltz is a highlight in a film overflowing with fantastic moments.
Couldn't agree more !
1 of my top 5 music moments of all time.
Word
One of the greatest stage exits of all the time. "Thank you".
He breaks into this song like a bullet through glass. And drives it at full speed right to the end .
One of the greatest soul singers alive.
THE greatest....
Alive or dead !! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Roaring Boy from Belfast never disappoints.
I've seen Van Morrison live 5 times in Concert. Most recently in September 2023. The man can still bring it at 78. He never does a song the same way twice. He's a deep down soul man
That entire show was incredible..The early work of Martin Scorsese with the farewell show of The Band..All of these guys at the peak of their careers..The Band, Dr.John, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchel, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Muddy Waters, The Staple Singers, Emmylou Harris, ..Of course, "Van The Man"!!! & more.
so lucky this was filmed... everywhere you look at this concert, pure genius is found...
I’ve always had a healthy appreciation for The Band, but I wouldn’t say that they were one of my personal favorites. And yet, The Last Waltz has always had a special place in my heart. I found it hard to explain until fairly recently, when I came to realize that the concert itself took place on the night of my birth! As this version of The Band was leaving the world, I was entering… good for me, though the rest of the world might feel that they got the short end of that particular trade… oh well
...not to mention Bob Dylan.
Last Waltz is a masterpiece of live performance.
That performance will never age, a vocalist in his prime.
Great reaction.
THIS is the classic performance of 'The Band's' "The Last Waltz" movie. Bethany, you could create an entire program analyzing the great vocals that took place through the course of that wonderful movie. This is classic Rock & Roll at it's best from some of the best performers of the era....all backed by "The Band".
Yes! She MUST do this!
I have always heard Van as a singing jazz horn player( repeated phrasing, time delaying, rythmic, volumn changes, scatting in almost every song, smoothness, growling and more). For invention within a song, hear " Listen To The Lion". With close to 50 albums, youwill understand his artistic dedication.
I have to say, I'm a Van Morrison tribute artist, huge fan. your analysis passion is spot on. You are one of the few people I've ever seen that really knows what's going on inside both the song and the artist in his delivery. Van stole the show in this film and your deep dive can help others find the explanation why. Ultimately all that technical freedom is helping him be an extraordinary communicator. Thank you very much and I think I shall be a fan of yours now too. Bravo❤
Robbie Robertson’s account of working with Van on this was great. Apparently The Band loved this one.
Have a look at an older Van at Hollywood Bowl in 2008.
One of the greatest live performances of all time.
Not to mention the Band..
I am trying to count the times i have listened and watched this
My favourite from the movie is the Band performing with the Staples. It's well worth a deep dive as the members of The Band trade verses with one of the great gospel / soul groups. So much to explore in the vocal styles.
I kind of knew instinctively that this performance had a special magic but this analysis brilliantly reveals where the magic comes from - this lady is a genius (as is Van the Man).
I lived on the San Francisco peninsula from 1967-77 and this was the last concert I saw at Winterland. They opened the doors at 5:00 pm and it ended well after 2:00 am. I had seen the Band years earlier, and Van Morrison several times, but this show which also featured Dylan, Clapton, Neil Young, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr and many other guest performers was epic.
Always loved the performances in "The Last Waltz". This is a perfect example of when an artist completely destroys their studio recording via their live performance. I can't even listen to the studio version anymore. Great review and thank you for taking the time to examining this song.
Having Robbie Robinson on guitar and The Band backing him is a kick to Van also.
Van is my favorite musician of all time, his music has literally kept me alive. His attack is unbelievable. But most of all, when he sings, you can almost see his soul. He is REAL. Van changes his enunciation a lot. Sometimes he sings as though it was speaking in tongues and not actual words. I think the fact that people who don't speak English love his vocals is testament to that. He has an unusual way of making a sort of sound sometimes at the end of words; a sort of tapering of noise unique to Van. Listen to the Lion is an unbelievable vocal performance and I'm assuming you know all about it. You are fantastic too by the way. 🤩 Thanks for this video, it was great.
This is such a joyous performance, I'll never get tired of watching it. Van is such an instinctive musician, it all seems so effortless and in the moment. I think being a saxophone player might have helped the way he shapes his words and phrases.
"Brown Eyed Girl," "Why Must I Always Explain?", "Wavelength," "Tupelo Honey," "Listen to The Lion," "Someone Like You,"
"Days Like This," and "In The Garden",'Moondance', are all Van Morrison songs that are outstanding. You really can't
make a list of songs that can explain his talent. He's a musical genius, singer, and poet. His music has been described
as attaining a spiritual feeling beyond or above the range of typical experiences. A transcendence feeling of experiencing
the music through his lyrics and voice. Other songs like Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile), Full Force
Gale, Domino, Cypress Avenue, Queen Of The Slipstream, and Dweller On The Threshold are good examples. It's a deep
rabbit hole to go down - but, believe me, it's well worth it.
One of my favorites of his "songs" is "Coney Island". He doesn't sing, he just describes a day trip around Ireland. Just like I've done many times. Not to be too sappy, but it sings to my Celtic soul. The craic is definitely good when I hear it.
Thank you so much for this analysis. Straight to the top of my favorite reactions list. Van has been my #1 for decades. Saw him live only once: he didn't have his band, just came out with his guitar sat on the edge of the stage and sang. Amazing. Thank you again, you made my day.
I'm 62 years old , The Last Waltz is from 1976 and I still get goosebumps at this performance from Van The Man and The Band together . I see something different and unseen each and every time from this performance. It really is music to be enjoyed and be proud of .
That whole show is worth a watch . One of the greatest rock concerts of all time
Legend has it as Van past Bob Dylan (who was on next with The Band) he challenged Dylan to "Follow that" :)
Van fan here. I agree his singing is so powerful and emotive and its like a musical instrument.
Love Van Morrison so much
btw take note of him belting out and growing 100% obviously hard to do , but he leaves you in no doubt about his conviction!
He came up in an era when almost all pop music was blues based. He mixed R&B, Jazz and Rock and Roll to to create his own unique style.
My man Van went through an absolute blizzard before hitting the stage! ❄️❄️❄️
The Band should have a reaction of their own 🤘🤘
The reason I love Van is because his voice is an instrument! You are gorgeous by the way!!
This man has been singing since the mid sixties and he was outstanding then.imagine getting better and better. Unbelievable
I love his passion, and for me that's what it's all about. I can, and have, watched this over and over and over. Love The Man!
Van has soooo much soul and grit. I love his work. Thank you for doing a video on him, hopefully you do more like perhaps Tupelo Honey.
Lest we forget: Van is not only putting on one of the greatest soul-singing performances of all time, he also wrote the song.
For me, when i was very very young i fell in love with "into the mystic " he has a way of saying such deep things so simply and delivering them with such casual, boiling passion. He's amazing
Not just any performance. The Last Waltz!!!
Yeah, that's one of the great moments in music right there. So timeless...
The Last Waltz. on your channel Betthany. Wow I can't believe it. I've waited for so long. More Please. Certainly the best concert movie of all time. Thankyou so much
Excellent commentary. I might have been annoyed by so many interruptions if I had not viewed and enjoyed this performance so many, many times.
Love Van Morrison. He just released two singles for his next album! Still going!
One of my favorites!!!.
Crank it up !!!
By far my fav from him The first time i saw this vid i had to learn it on guitar It is a fun song to play along with Love it Try the band with The Staples Mavis Has nothing but soul in her voice
I have always loved Van Morrison ❤
Greatest live performance in the history of concert films. Cannot be topped.
Absolutely superb just awesome! Love this performance and this rendition❤❤❤Van is the Man💯👍🏻
love van because he has character in his songs in his voice. he often sings to the words hes singing to the top! and bottom low down.
haha little baritone, but he can sing anything he wants play most instruments also best musician ever , btw if you didnt know he used to be able sing very high, twilight zone ' Try for Sleep' or a deeper voice. so many songs to do Lover's Prayer' is a great song by him but he has hundreds of great songs tho.
Many singers wanted to join the Band; they only asked one to do so, Van. He demurred, but you can see why they wanted him, every tool in the box and then some.
My go to when I need a fix of pure energy, his is a voice made to uplift and inspire. ❤️
Thank you, Bethany. Great deep-dive into Van Morrison's singing. You always cheer me up!
Oh yeah, great choice to allow Van Morrison to perform and give your reactions, Bethany 👍
I've never heard this song, but his power and agility is so engaging. Full of passion too.
My favorite CD is "Astral weeks" 👍👋🧙♀️
Van The Man was brilliant in the 60s with Them, the 70s and the 80s. These days he's more phoning it in. This is from The Last Waltz by The Band. A lot of artists played with The Band in that concert. Take a look into that it was legendary
He is 78….
@@sunshine3914 Yes, I understand why it is so. Still long over the top
"The Last Waltz" was a peak of civilization.
Thank you BILL GRAHAM !
As Van is essential to me I’m very grateful for this podcast. So interesting!!! I keep listening to it. Blessings and love to Van. ❤️❤️🙏
Some say it was his " coming back out to stage performances "..
What a way to start it back up
Sweet! I started watching this before my morning meetings. I couldn’t finish it without being late. So I paused the video and picked up right where we left off. Thank you for a delightful musical interlude.
If I understood you correctly, this was the first time you ever saw this version on the song. May I suggest you watch the entire concert? It is brilliantly done. Thank you.
All of Van Morrison 's music is top shelf.
What.a great reaction..love it...everyone who loves van the man is a friend😉
The Last Waltz greatest concert film ever!
Здравствуйте, скажу честно,что такого исполнителя впервые слышу.Мне соло понравилось.Он хорошо исполняет .Спасибо.Мне тоже понравилось.Вы так завораживающе рассказываете .Меня это поражает всё больше и больше.
Please hear more
Yes yes yes !!! Your words and reactions really echo and amplify the joy I get from Van's performance here. Can I (strongly) recommend that you have a look at his performance of 'Sweet Thing' live at the Hollywood Bowl (2008). This is an artist really working miracles with an untouchably great song from his back catalogue. Mesmerising and definitely worthy one of your video reviews !
this cheered me up today
thank you
🐉👨🎤🛸🌍
Love Van and Love You!!!
Nothing better than seeing a beautiful face first thing in the morning. 😁
Hell of a singer. Pushing 80 he's still a hell of singer.
It's Van's voice and his words! What power lies within him! He's the Word Man!
Omg you are sooo lovely!! Your observations are so cute and respectful, entertaining, and educational! Just oohhh really well done thank you 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙇🏼♂️
This version of Caravan is the only one that exists as far as I'm concerned. Several childhood core memories occurred with this movie (The Last Waltz) on in the background.
Looks like Van is performing with The Band who are worthy of acclaim in their own right as the backing band for Bob Dylan. A couple of rabbit holes you can explore.
Thoughtful insights. She and Rick Beato are my latest, favorite appreciators of music.
Great..Great reaction. I love to se you face when you listen to Great music. Thank you.❤
I have only recently become a huge Van fan... although I am 75 y/o and have known many of his songs over the years. But, lately he keeps drawing me in. Your analysis of this performance is awesome. Thank you.
The Last Waltz is one of the best music/film performances ever. The entire thing is full of great artists and memorable moments. Van Morrison has a number of different styles of delivery, from really energetic to very sweet and chill.
I saw Van Morrison in 1971 at The Lions Share, a small club in San Anselmo, in Marin County, north of San Francisco. He played many shows in the Bay Area around that time, and he always had excellent musicians in his band. What made this show so great was that we got to see him and his band up close. It was a great time to live in the Bay Area, when San Francisco was a Rock and Roll Mecca.
One of my favorite Van songs. And an Incredible performance. The music back then (60-70s) was insane. The golden era for me that will never be repeated. Shame I wasn't born till the 80's :)). I envy the people that lived through it.
Great reaction, Love Van the Man and of course The Band. Peace from Minnesota
The Last Waltz is,to me, The best cocert movie ever, packed with sensational performances by a wide range of musicians tied togethe by interviews with The Band members.
The fact that he is up there with “the band” makes it so much better!❤

Wild Night 🌌 iS Calling
Fantastic rendition of Van's song along with the inspiring guitar licks by Robbie, Van is into it and so are we. Lovely reaction post.
I love the way Bethany gets all immersed in these videos. I can't wait until the day she discovers Edda Dell'Orso. Maybe in a song like "Souvenir d'un soir" with Stelvio Cipriani
Totally agree. At his best, he has power, sensitivity and precision in equal measure. Lethal combo.
VAN THE MAN ,AND THE 1ST MIC DROP 🎤 WE GOT TO SEEE
Van is the maestro. I mean he does it all-start to finish. You better bring your A game with Van. He's a musician's musician.
I just saw the 45th anniversary release of this iconic concert film last night at the theatre. In a film full of stellar performances Van stole the show. You can see how utterly amused Robbie Robertson is while playing lead guitar here when Van goes into the stage kicks. The other two iconic performances here are for my money The Staples doing The Weight along with The Band. You get Mavis Staples pure power and Pops Staples silky smooth nuanced delivery along with Rick Danko's blue eyed soul on his solo. Then there is Joni Mitchell doing background vocals behind a screen on Neil Young's classic Helpless, adding texture to a clsssic song while Neil is clearly high as a kite. Lol
I struggle to choose between this live version, and the one with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra from the magnificent It's Too Late To Stop Now live LP. The Band here are great, of course, but he had the CSO as tight as tight can be.
With you talking about repetition, I'd be interested to hear what you make of Madame George: the whole, gorgeous "loves to glove to love" section, and the ethereal outro.
Watching your pretty face while listening to this beautiful music... I needed this today thanx
Van is a master!
Van's voice overwhelms the words. But you don't care. He creates something beyond words, so it matters not whether you can distinguish them.
You should check out "The Weight" from this film. The Band is joined by The Staples Singers.
More than anything, and I know the vocals is the main point. But it was live. One time only. This happened once only. I think that's special. I like your channel. Thanks
Great reaction !!! Love how you break down this video...how about reacting to Ren , has being along time !!! 3 part Story of Jenny and screech is a must plus his basking Videos on the streets of England...
Thank you for your reviews I enjoy your channel very much.
What a great time to react to this! This concert was filmed on Thanksgiving day. The Last Waltz and Waiting for Columbus are the best live albums ever.
Allmans Live at the Fillmore is the best live album imo but those are certainly up there. Talking Heads Stop Making Sense is crazy under appreciated.
I saw this film when it came out in 1978. I saw it with my girlfriend at a midnight showing. I immediately bought the triple album. I don't know how many Van Morrison albums I've bought since then. In about 1987, Van held a couple of concerts in London where I was living at the time. My old girlfriend from 1978 was in London at the time and I took her to one of the concerts. When we left, I saw Van being driven away in a limo. Instinctively, I waved at him and he waved back. My old girlfriend didn't see it and still denies it happened to this day.
P.S. My son now has all my Van Morrison records.
yay!
Love me some Van Morrison 😃
