  • A look at, and inside, the One Volume Edition of Bone ('The Complete Cartoon Epic'). Jeff Smith's comics saga collected in a 1300+ page omnibus is surprisingly portable, and the limited edition hardcover feels like a treasure!

    Also, I have a goof - a couple of times, I describe the one-volume edition as at 'over 600 pages'. While that is *technically* true, what I meant was 'over 1300 pages'. It's a fat book!

    I have done it . It took me nearly a month to go through it . I could have complete it sooner but I want to savour it. It was a great experience and that too with so much of life changing philosophy. My takeaway is "Too feel safe , we need something or someone to feel safe against ". I may be misquoting the line but there are too many of those jems scattered around. Thanks for recommending the book .
    BTW , I bought the full colour one volume edition and I just love it.

      That’s terrific, so glad you enjoyed the series! And I’m quite jealous of you; the one volume colour edition has been in my wish list for ages but since that would be my sixth version of Bone (well, fifth now that I have given away my colour paperbacks) I have always picked other books! Perhaps I should get a copy for ‘research purposes for the channel’ though! 😀

      I would suggest against it.
      Even though prinring is good and binding is ok , pages are too flimsy. I think it have been done to keep the book's thickness minimal.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 5 lety

      Oh no! Well, you may have saved me some money then - one of the main reasons I was considering it was because of how thin the black and white one-volume edition’s pages are! That’s a shame, I would have thought the requirements for colour printing would necessitate thick paper! Is it glossy?

    • @jaykolkata
      @jaykolkata Před 5 lety +1

      Yes , it is glossy . Colours also look good but it need very delicate handing.

      For the Love of Comics do you think the deluxe edition book’s pages are too thin also? They are going for a lot of money. Maybe I should wait for a new hardcover edition to come out.

      That's EXACTLY what my wife said - "Why doesn't this have a map?"

      Those were made after Jeff's first big Bone stint. Fun Fact: in making the grand one-volume version, he contracted carpal tunnel and *kept drawing* until he didn't have it anymore in order to finish the whole thing!

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm not sure if this exact edition will ever see a reprint. I know the colour one-volume hardcover is still available, but they seem to be sticking to the 'limited' nature of this black and white HC. However, even the black and white paperback was supposed to be a limited edition and they changed their minds about that, so there may still be a chance!

    Do you remember how much you paid for the Hardcover version in USD? I wonder if there will be a reprint with a Bone cartoon series in the works. Are the pages more of a sepia tone? I love how black & white art stands out on a sepia background.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 4 lety +2

      It's been a long time but I remember I got it for a relative song on eBay, given market prices. The pages, while not sepia, are less than pure white, which, you're right, has a pleasing effect with the black and white art! The original black and white volumes are as hard to get a hold of as this limited edition, though!

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 4 lety +1

      The Bone Handbook is more of a primer and doesn't have any new comics or stories in it. The other three are collected volume names - Adventure Begins is books 1,2 and 3; Saga Continues is 4,5 and 6 etc.

    Would have been better if it was created in 2 books instead of just 1, so pages could have been slightly bigger.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 5 lety +3

      You could try and find the original hardcovers in black and white which were full comic sized. But I agree, two volumes (slipcased box set!) for a deluxe hardcover would have been very nice. More than the trim size, the pages could have been thicker.
      I think they'd decided to shrink the collection anyway though, there are hundreds of books of that thickness that are bigger. I suppose cost and the final price was their issue.
