It may sound like hyperbole to claim a particular comic is the best. But I think there is enough critical and financial consensus to back up my claim. Bone is an accomplishment in both storytelling and self-publishing.
Following the three Bone cousins - Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone - as they are introduced to a magical world and its inhabitants including the enigmatic young woman Thorn, Bone blends both high fantasy and humor. This video argues what it does well and what makes it unique.

I remember reading Bone graphic novels back when I was in elementary school. Those were some good times.
Omfg me toooooo
Holy shit same here and I remover being obsessed with them
same just replace elementary with middle school.
Yes! But I could never find all of them at the library, so I ended up reading like the 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 9th ones only.
Same I would always read those books back to back as a kid.
Who else would love “Bone” to have an animated series.
@Emperor Arkunus, Hmm... I don't know about Netflix I heard it had some constraints.
i remember there being a 10 second short where it looked like an 80s show
Me!! DEFINITELY ME!!!!
@@yourcordialvermillionchapw2398 Constraints? As in time constraints, that's understandable, animators and other workers shouldn't be rushed. But if you meant restrictions? Netflix has none of that, they let Big Mouth some how hit their service and I don't know why. But for how graphic novel adaptations go on Netflix, remember Hilda?
Sounds cool, but how long would it last... I mean, it's a nine book series. Maybe you could make one season or multiple small seasons but without filler it would be short and just the series. But moving.
Omg, 3rd grade me found this in the library and I read all the issues they had. Holy FUUUUCK the nostalgia
For me, before Sanji THERE WAS GRANMA BEN FRIG YEAAAH
same
3rd grade, book fair 🤙🏽
same 😂 i also got into it in 3rd grade and now, i'm a manga addict
I remember finding a chapter of the series when I was in middle school
The moving guy was so confused
*_"Um... Maybe the heat got to him..."_*
I like to think that Chris just showed up, offered to help, and then did the bit.
The best thing about Bone is it's the epitome of an ageless comic. It reads equally well whether the reader is 8 or 50. That's an impressive accomplishment in this day and age.
To me as a European, the Bone brothers always looked like white Smurfs ...
The smurfs exist in North America too
@@jacobkeary6740 That's completely true, but they were first published in Belgium! :-)
@@walterendres4829 it's just like saying "As a Canadian this medication makes me think of insulin" lol
@@jacobkeary6740 In a way it does, of course! :-)
As an American, breathing oxygen makes it easier for me to stay alive.
You know you were the cool kid in school if you owned these.
BSJ IN YO HOUSE lmao yes.
*_"Ah shucks stop it, You're making me blush."_*
I own the whole series scholastic reprints. I lent 5th book out to a friend... I never got it back.
uhhh what cool kid?
@@yourcordialvermillionchapw2398 smiley bone referance? it's been 4 years i still remember that.
“...Published as an all ages book.”
Me: Vividly remembers someone getting SLICED IN TWO in the last book.
Yeah, TOTALLY suitable for all ages.
and someone getting decapitated...
Jackeboy
And kingdok claiming he ate thorn’s parents alive.
The collector Well to be fair we don’t see that happen.
Jackeboy
That’s true. Then again, he later bites thorn’s leg and that is pretty graphic.
I remember being pretty shocked in the 3rd grade when I saw Kingdok's arm get chopped off.
I love Bone. It’s my favorite Graphic Novel series. Bone is so underrated and I wish it would get more recognition.
True
Really wish we'd see an adaptation of some sort for Bone. Telltale tried adapting it into game form in their beginnings, but never got past the first two volumes.
Kenneth Ayoob they’re making a movie thats set to release in 2020 or 2021. I forgot, but here’s the article

@@Dumplin_Kaktus umm, y'know that article is over 10 years old, right?
Paul Heap oh, it is. I didn’t look at the date.
There was a game somewhere, I think it was titled "Bone: Out from Boneville" but I forget how old it is.
@@rykr9275 Yes, it was in a whole steam like place with many other E rated games
My daughter and I love this comic. It's witty yet sincere, and the blend of art styles and dialogue makes each character unique. There's genuine humor and suspense, and Bone feels so sympathetic through it all. So glad to see it recognized.
Bright and happy yet dark and scary.
@@mareeeedensos6348 exactly that’s why I like it
9 Arcs, Prequel, Sequel Trilogy, Side Story, 25th Anniversary to end the OG story and a handbook is all what you get for Bone.
This was the only comic we could find in my middle school it was like a cripid
Re-read this series just a couple months ago and it remains one of my favorite of all time. The transition from humor to intensity is so perfectly paced that the line between the two is unnoticeable.
My elementary school had the Bone colorization in the library, and I’m still kicking myself for never checking it out.
I always read the same bone books never finished the trilogy
I always thought it was new like 2005 2006 lol maybe the color version
This was in every library in every elementary school here in Canada😅 childhood classic here, so glad you covered it
Yes! I can attest to this - my elementary school in Ontario, had the entire Bone collection and I loved reading them as a child.
Ridiculous that Dave Sim accused Jeff Smith's wife of being a leech on Jeff (because that's how he feels about all women) when she gave up a lucrative career to support him.
Dave Sim making repulsive comments about a woman? Must be a day ending in Y.
@@JakobKaine_BrickJAK The unfortunate thing is this - Dave Sim was right.
*_I remember reading these in elementary school... god the nostalgia hurts_*
The nostalgia hit me like a truck
I completely agree. Bone is one of my absolute favorite comics, and I got into comics partially because of it
First comic I read too, since it was available at my elementary school.
I love Bone, but I got into it rather late in its run, as an adult. Which could also be seen as a plus since I was able to catch the last year or so as it came to a close. I do remember seeing it a couple times in Disney Adventures Magazine. I came to love Smith's artwork, and his work in this series is especially inspiring.
Thanks for reminding me of Pogo.
This does remind me to read the Bone again. It is such a fantastic series.
3 years later and Bone is getting an animated series through Netflix!
Sadly it got cancelled
i always thought the reason the bones look the way they do is to contrast with the world they feel into. they are cartoony characters that fell into a fantasy story.
Thanks so much for this review! Bone is a timeless classic. If it is ever adapted I hope that it will be an animated series. I think that the brilliant new Dark Crystal series proves that audiences will support s saga like Bone!
At one point a movie was planned but it would've been a travesty;
In the late 90s, an attempt was made by Nickelodeon Movies to produce a film adaptation of Bone. Jeff Smith said in a 2003 interview that Nickelodeon wanted the Bone cousins to be voiced by pre-teen actors, and wanted the film's soundtrack to include popsongs by the likes of N'Sync. Smith's response was that one would never insert pop songs in the middle of The Lord of the Rings or The Empire Strikes Back, and therefore pop songs should not be placed in Bone either.
Dark crystal was super good, call up Netflix if you want bone
I'm sure you heard but Netflix received the license/rights to make the Bone animated series! Jeff Smith tweeted about it. So excited!
Kendall Moore Yikes, thank God that didn't happen.
Homer Simpson: I love Bone, Bone is great!
Ohh the nostalgia! Sitting on the back porch bench, curled up, and reading this while rain lashed against the roof...
This was a really good story and I can't recommend it enough.
Such a great book. Everyone should read this. It truly is amazing. The scene where you find out why the bad guys are looking for phoney is one of my all time favorite comic moments. King dok is great too. I could go forever. Read it!
Yes! Listen to this man!
"Bone" is a must read for any comic fan. Truly a gorgeous story that will have you running the gamut of emotions. Very special story.
Bone is unironically one of my top three favorite favorites.
When I was younger I didn't have a lot of comics, I just spent a lot of time in bookstores reading comics off the shelf. I read Bone and it had such an impact on me I realized it wasn't enough to have simply read it. I had to own it for myself.
They can always do Bone as an Avatar the Last Airbender animated show.
Probably my favorite American comic ever. Awesome to finally see a review here!
Oh, Hi ! You caught me watching ComicTropes :-)
This series means the world to my brother and myself. For years we wanted so badly for it to be made into a 2D animated series. I’m so glad that so many continue to read and enjoy it because it more than deserves it. The world building and lore is so interesting and I remember having so many feelings of terror and feeling small especially when they expired the old rat temples in the mountains. Absolutely incredible.
Bone has this dreamy cartoon vibe to it while having some of the most fleshed out characters in any story, they literally feel like real people. I grew up reading it and a testament to its masterfully written hook, it interested me more than the video games and cartoons I had access to. I remember getting to the end and it made me feel I was seeing friends for the last time.
I have the entire series omnibus and, yeah, towards the end I was going: "This is literally the comic book equivalent of Lord of the Rings."
Bone is easily one of my favorite graphic novels of all time. Seriously wished they made an animated adaptation.
It's nice to be told that your appreciation of something goes beyond nostalgia.
Bone was the series that got me into comics as a kid. It also made me want to make my own story based comics, so it has a special place in my heart.
My friends and I used to read these comics back in the 4th grade thanks to our school library. I miss my childhood
I think having a planned end in a story makes a huge difference as opposed to serials that just keep going amd going until stuff gets rehashed too many times or it just stops abruptly.
I still have all my original issues of bone. My dad bought them for himself when they originally came out, then gave them to me as a Christmas gift when I was a child.
I read this book from the years of 2007- about 2011. 5-9 years old, and I’m now realizing that this story gave me my love for fantasy
Many years ago I found an omnibus that had the entire run of Bone in one book on a massive discount. I didn't know enough about it back then, and have always kinda regretted not getting it.
Grew up reading these comics, from 2007 to 2013. Even bought the novelised sequel spin-off that didn't really go anywhere.
It's really amazing how Jeff wrote the volumes as a sort of chronicle that evolved bit by bit, starting as a humerous, surreal fantasy to an epic, action-packed, horror-fantasy. You can really tell that Jeff studied a lot of mythology; I'll bet he even was a D&D fan.
Bone was waaaaay ahead of its time. Fantasy was never done better. Humor. Drama. Action AND adventure! I miss it dearly!
I remember back in elementary school, Bones was the only book in my school library I actually read! And enjoyed!
I remember seeing "Bone" stories featured in various issues of Disney Adventures during the 1990s, which is how I was introduced to the series. :)
I was just remembering how much I loved Bone yesterday. This video is greatly appreciated and now I’m convinced that Chris has harbored the powers of the Lord of the Locusts for generations due to this mere coincidence. Thanks!
Just finished re-reading the series after 10+ years since the last time. Still holds up, and I have sooooo many happy nostalgiac memories of this fantastic series!
Bone graphic novel series is whole heartedly part of my childhood and close to my heart
I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve re read it
After Bone don't forget to read 'Rose'! I only came across Bone about 5 years ago. I read it, gave it to my dad to read who also loved it and this past Christmas gave the first book to my friends teenager.
Yes, yes it is the best "high fantasy" comic ever. It's so comfy, so well done, BEAUTIFULLY drawn, funny...just masterful.
My first introduction to Bone was reading Disney Adventures during the 90s. They used to reprint portions of the stories in certain issues. Then many years later I read them all from the scholastic book collection.
A family member got my siblings and I the huge paperback volume and we read it until it was in tatters. Thank you for talking about this comic!!
6:15 it also allows Phoney to shove 7/8 of a pie into Fone Bone’s noggin in anatomy-breaking humorous fashion.
Recently dig up my entire collection of Bone comics after going through my grandparents garage. Saw this in my recommended and I think I’ll open those comics back up.
Read the series in elementary and it’s still my favorite graphic novel
Absolutly my favorite comic book of all time. I first read it in grade school and have loved it ever since. Still read it all the way through every once in a while
Found these in my school library way back in 3rd grade I think? I had been the first person in my class to find a comic book in there and i got most of my class hooked on them. The nostalgia man
I remember I got the complete edition for my birthday in elementary school.best day of my life
Bone is an incredible read. Please if you haven't picked it up in color or B&W just do it. It's really that good and the 40$ bw omnibus won't break the bank
im in middle school and they still gt them till this day, i read the series in 4th grade and im so glad to be coming back to it
I love this Channel so much! It makes my Sundays happy
Bone was the first comic series I read and was one of the reasons I started loving comics.
My middle school's library had the Bone series, and it was so popular that kids would be racing during library hour to be able to check out a Bone book
Can't wait to see what you have coming up on the channel, thanks for all the hardwork!
I'm so grateful i found this video, I have always seen this series in the scholastic book orders catalog as a kid, but i never knew how interesting it really was!
One of my favorites, one of t comics that has made me cry.
Bone is the comic of my childhood!
Bone was a huge inspiration to me. Whenever I start to forget to put good panel to panel moments in some comics, I study Bone.
Great episode! Excited for this international episode at some point. Thanks for your hard work!
I first discovered Bone when it was briefly shown in Disney Adventures magazine, which I read frequently as a kid. Having reread it recently, it's just as good, if not better, than I remembered.
Finally! Well worth the wait. Great overview, Chris!
I first read Bone as an adult and I can recommend it to adults highly too. One of the greatest fantasy comics ever.
Thank you SOOO much for this video!! I started reading this series when I was younger & forgot all about it. I bought the complete series trade paper back and just read the whole thing in 4 days! I’m showing everyone this channel! Great work brother!
I remember reading this when I was younger but never really getting into the story. Now I'm gonna read this whole series hopefully with a greater appreciation of it
It’s one of the best comics ever !!
Bone has it all, comedy, tension, cool characters, the writing is awesome too!
i dont know how i ended up watching the videos on this channel, but man i love how you explain everything. keep up the good work.
I have waited years for somthing like this. Thank you for making my dreams come true!
Bone was basically my childhood, I remember every christmas receiving a Bone book with a bit of nostalgia
You have succeeded in getting me to check this comic out. I am excited for it.
"No.. that was when the prunes kicked in!"
I remember back in middle school, while in the library, reading the first book of Bone, and falling in love with it. It inspired me to create many fantasy stories and was a big part of my life. So glad that even today people still have such fond memories of Bone. Really happy that it's getting some exposure too.
Fun fact, Shaenon K. Garrity, creator of Narbonic, is actually the one who named Bartleby, she won a contest.
Omg! Havent even watched yet but so pumped. Been waiting years for you to do bone.
I love this story, and it’s easily my favorite comic of all time. My wife got me the 20th Anniversary Full Color Collectors Box Set for my Birthday a couple years ago. It’s amazing.
And Bone #1 is the only comic that I’ve spent more than $300 on. I got it like 10 years ago, and just got it back from CGC a couple months ago, and my 8.0 Bone #1 is easily the crown jewel of my comic collection.
I LOVE this comic.
Anytime that someone in my life shows even the tiniest bit of interest in reading comics, I let them borrow my old Bone TPB.
Your wife sounds like an awesome chick, lol.
I read these books in elementary school and fell in love with it. My aunt gifted me a book that was the complete series in looong book
I remember reading these in the library with the bois. I read them out of order and we didn’t have the whole set, so I ended up not knowing the story, but damn do I have some bone nostalgia.
This series popped into my head out of nowhere. I read this series back in middle school and god it gives me some nostalgia!
Not only just my favorite fantasy comic, but it's my favorite Graphic novel of ALL TIME.
Bone is an incredible journey. It's been a while, but I still remember it dearly... *Picks up the complete collection for the infinith time.*
Chris, thanks so much. This series sounds like a winner.
Back in elementary school it was always a race to see who would get the bone books after they replaced them in the library.
I remember back when I was in elementary (I'm in highschool right now) I was a very terrible and troubled kid. I was constantly in trouble, and I felt alone at home due to everyone always working. But one day my guidance counselor introduced me to Bone, and boy did I love the story. The story was so good, that she had bought me all 9 volumes as a reward for good behavior. I really enjoyed it, and I no longer felt that I was alone, because just reading the book made me forget all about my problems and trouble. Now I'm on the right track, is an honors Student, and I'm doing really well in school. I've just completed my second year in criminal justice, and is starting on my third year in the course. This story really turned my life around for the better.
Holy crap, I completely forgot about Bone. Thanks for making this vid!
This video made me so happy. Im glad other people love this as much as I do
Great video, I had Bone laying around on my shelf for a long time, after watching this I’m finally going to read it all. (Nice new setting)
I'm so glad you made this video
I got the whole book in about 2017, the big book with all the chapters combined. I read the whole thing in a week and more. I’ve read it about 7 times now, and it never gets old. It’s one of those books that has well paced story driven actions and the fact that not only are that rat creatures and locust a problem, but the main characters have to worry about political entities as well which adds that sprinkle bunch to the top. One of the most underrated, and I mean it. Underrated comics ever.
Just what I needed: more comics to read. I am looking into this now.
Good take. Jeff Smith paid homage to Walt Kelly, Bill Watterskn, and Tolkien all in one epic journey.
The little skits at the start of each episode are just gold...
