    Moon Knight has never been an A-list title. In fact, it's a title that is regularly canceled and rebooted with a new creative team. But because it isn't a top-seller, Marvel Comics allows it's writers and illustrators to take more chances on it. This video goes over the changes each creative team made when they took a crack at Moon Knight.

    I have never been a fan of street level superheroes, nothing personal, I just like cosmic stories and space operas, but Moon Knight and the Question have been exceptions for me, I loved Lemire's run of Moon Knight and Vengeance of Moon Knight is one of my favourite stories. @jamesoblivion Před 3 lety +2

      I've been asking for an episode on the Question, including the fantastic Denny O'Neill run. And I'll keep asking. Such a great character who's gone through some interesting changes. I will always treasure the meta-issue where Question comes to idolize, then reject Rorschach, after reading a copy of Watchmen that someone left on an airliner. Works on so many levels.
      And I like street level heroics to balance out the global and cosmic threats. Heroes like Moon Knight, Question, Daredevil, etc., excel at exploring different kinds of themes. And I'll throw Batman halfway into that basket, as I've never quite reconciled the Batman who fights aliens alongside the Justice League with the grim vigilante of Gotham. He walks in both worlds.

    Actually Moon Knight's favorite DISGUISE was Steven Grant, as Marc Spector no longer wanted to live under his true identity as it gave him PTSD/anxiety remembering all the bad things he did back in his mercenary career. Steven Grant was a way for him to feel normal, confident, and Marlene loved Steven Grant to death as he had the least to do with crime fighting.

  • @Screamingreader

    My favourite is the Huston/Finch run. Showing that a hero can be uniquely flawed, and self-destructive; struggling with mental health; and a strong supporting cast with a hero's love interest who is actually strong and independent, Crawley, the very articulate homeless man and Frenchie. The reveal of Frenchie's sexuality was also handled really well. Damn good run, and it is, in my opinion the best and strongest character study of the bunch. It always hurts when people don't recommend it, because they are put off by the violence - or it's not sleek enough.
    Moon Knight does have a pretty good (and reoccurring) rogue's gallery too, so I disagree somewhat with you there. Stained Glass Scarlet - a nun with an awesome design, whose child was a criminal that was murdered, and when she found out, she tried to fix the system through god's grace. Like a female religious punisher. I'm making a bad case for it, aren't I? Trust me, she's neat. Anyway, he also had Morpheus. A sleep-focused character who builds up his power the longer he's awake - with lots of nice nightmarish imagery. Black Spectre was a medival themed villain who represented the political side of veterans and judicial systems - and how they had failed the people. I thought he was cool, especially with how far he pushes Moon Knight.
    A lot of good stuff, is what I'm saying :)

    'A Box of Music for Savage Studs' is one of my favorite Moon Knight stories, its a wonderful one, and it is referenced in the Ellis run where he is fighting the ghosts. The music box at the end is a big call back to this story. That run is full of references to the old series.

    Best single issue (and good for newcomers) is #25 of his original run, a double-sizer introducing Black Spectre. It's a really solid self-contained story and includes some early references to his mental issues as well (yes his mental issues were sometimes alluded in the first volume as well, though never as specifically as later).

    • @RamsTheNameCom
      @RamsTheNameCom Před 4 lety +3

      @David B Jacobs .....Actually Moon Knight didn't have mental issues in that comic issue #25. Marlene only made a joke stating something along the lines of "Sometimes I feel you may have multiple personality disorder or are schizophrenic" and the Marc prominently denies it. He walks away looking back at his Khonshu statue and has a vision of it melting. This was meant to signify Marc Spector realizing his Khonshu statue was a fake made out of wax that Marlene and Frenchie built him to calm him down after his Statue was broken by Bushman. Marc Spector realized that his friends think he's crazy and don't take him seriously.
      No, issue #27 written by Steven Grant was the first time they introduce multiple personality disorder, mistake Moon Knight's costume as white, and made clear that Marc is Schizophrenic. But Doug Moench would come back in issue 28 onward to make sure people understood issue 27 was not canon....... though eventually it did become canon again by Charlie Huston in 2006. The Charlie Huston avoided giving him multiple personality disorder, only the characters around him believe he has this condition. However he did get Multiple Personality (due to a new writing team) around the end of Vengeance of the Moon Knight..... or in the Shadowlands comic that continues off from Vengeance.

    What bit of the Huston/Finch run I've seen, I really dug Finch's art, specifically because he puts such dense anatomical detail into his art that it ends up almost as a grotesque satire of the beefcake violence of superhero books. Even before all the blood and gore comes out in that opening fight with Bushman, they're so ridiculously bulky and veiny that the muscularity itself is off-putting. It fits well with the realistic violence and mental trauma Huston is writing, that if people were as huge and powerful as superhero comics often depict them, they'd be horrifying more than aspirational in some ways.

    I first picked up Moon Knight in the Marc Specter: Moon Knight era. Always liked the character. For Disney's show I'd like to see the mental health and magic oriented sides brought in as maybe he has two personalities relevant to Hero work. A street crime and shaman version. Maybe the switch off depending on the threat but the shaman version (which is tied strongly the Konshu) grows dominant around the full moon.

  • @richmcgee434

    Always liked this character, I have to agree, he's very versatile in terms of what you can do with him. His identity issues came through a bit (mostly as subtext) even in the early series, which made the later more explicit examination of his mental health feel less like an out-of-nowhere thing. If nothing else he's always had striking character designs, and he helped put Sienkiewicz (man, that's hard to spell) on the map as a talented artist with a unique style. It's nice to see that the old criticisms of him as a mere Batman knockoff have faded a bit, that was a very common complaint about MK in the 80s. Certainly lots of parallels to be drawn, but the character is deeper than an inferior imitation.

    • @RamsTheNameCom
      @RamsTheNameCom Před 4 lety

      @Rich McGee .....I blame solely Bill Sienkiewicz for the stigma of Moon Knight being a BatMan ripoff. As Bill admits in a 2018 interview that he purposely redesigned Moon Knight to look like BatMan and pose like BatMan as a middle finger to Doug Moench.
      He hated working with the guy behind close doors and strongly feels Moon Knight is a lame and boring superhero. And all Bill wanted to draw was BatMan, but DC Comics wouldn't hire him since he's fresh blood.
      Even to this day, Bill hates Moon Knight but would gladly take a job drawing the variant cover for him (money is money).
      On the other hand of things, Doug Moench was inspired by The Shadow and Warren Publishing's Vampirella when writting Moon Knight (as brought up VERY breifly in a few interviews.... Like one sentence brief. He did the same thing when he dropped the bomb that HE spent two weeks working with Warren Ellis on the 2014 Moon Knight run..... Like come on Doug!!!! We want to know more about this!!!!).
      BatMan was also inspired by The Shadow aka The Knight of Darkness (The Shadow's nickname). So there's also that connection between Moon Knight and BatMan.

    The Defenders were always my favorite Marvel (non) team. So, of course, the Zodiac storyline was my introduction to Moon Knight ( None of the stores that sold comics in my area back then carried the titles like Werewolf by Night. ) I've been a fan of his ever since.

    Moon Knight is an amazing character. Been enjoying him since the 90s and got some of his older comics. Whooooo some different tones!
    The...Ellis...run? Where he cuts off Bushman's face, that really had me following the comics. Dropped off when he imitated wolverine and cap and Spidey, and came right on back for the Mr Knight run
    Glorious lovely goodness.

    Moon Knight has been my favourite superhero for a long time, and a big part of that is the boundary breaking, risk taking nature of his best runs. It's great to hear that getting spotlighted for a change, instead of just mentioning highlights and lowlights. Thanks Comic Tropes!

    I would LOVE to see an episode on Bill Sienkiewicz. My favorite comic book artist of all time. When I got to see my name on the same page as his in a trade paperback, I was able to put down a giant unexpected checkmark on my bucket list. When I first picked up the DC Shadow comics in the 80s, his harrowing style forever changed the way I looked at comics. I followed it a bit after his departure, with Andrew Helfer's storylines still being heavy, gritty stuff that I wasn't used to, and the art by Marshall Rogers (with inks by Kyle Baker) was suitable. But it didn't have the nightmarish quality of Sienkiewicz's distinctive style.

    That’s why I love Marvel. In other media (Movies, games, Tv shows, cartoons) they bring obscure characters to the spotlight. That’s why I love Marvel games, they have characters people know as well as C-List and D-List characters.

    The Sienkiewicz Werewolf by Night story is a really distinct memory from my childhood. It was the greatest thing ever to me at the time. Probably had to do with the popularity of American Werewolf in London and the Howling on VHS at the time.
