Jeff Smith's BONE : Are these RARE EDITIONS? (doesn't matter, they're great!)

- Bone is not only one of my favourite comics of all time, it is also the comic I have sampled in the most number of different editions. In this episode, I look at two uncommon editions: a 3-in-1 colour hardcover omnibus set and a slipcased set of paperbacks.
I guess they're a bit rare, in that they don't seem easily available, but not expensive when I have found them, and the value of these books is really in the joy of reading them!
Join me for a quick look and brief chat about my experiences and thoughts with these two different presentations of Jeff Smith's comics classic!

Your recommendation pushed me to read Bone and boy did I love it! Absolutely amazing. Sad that Netflix cancelled the series.
It's such a well done comic at almost every level! It really would have been something if the tv show came close, but hey, we'll always have the comic!
Also, love this new camera angle that showcases your amazing collection in the background!
@@samratsur8074 Thanks! I liked it too - just need to figure out mic placement for the best sound...
WHAT!? THERE WAS GOING TO BE A NETFLIX SERIES!?!?
Fell in love with Bone in the late 90s, great video!
Thank you so much and I hope you enjoy all the other Bone videos I have up as well!
I own both these editions in a complete form. I'm happy to see I'm not the only Bone completionist around :)
As am I! 😁
Congratulations particularly on obtaining the Harvest box set, that has eluded me this far!
I live in northern Canada and when I was younger, bone was massive. It swept through my school like wildfire. Every year the school would hold a book fair sponsored by scholastic and bone was very prominent. The hardcovers were seen as a "white whale" among students, because of the price. I purchased volumes 1 & 2 at the time and was awaiting the release of the third. I quickly grew out of comics and now I have a hard time tracking down the third volume to complete the collection. To me they are the definitive editions to read bone.
They're great! And the fact they're regular size is a hidden feature almost!
And yes, I have now heard of Scholastic Book Fairs referred to the same way as Wimbledon, or Comic Con, so I can just imagine what a big deal they were!
Very, very cool. Never knew about those slip cases of the original B&W volumes. I tried searching for them on ebay and could not find any listings. They are surely RARE!! Looking forward if you ever do a full Bone collection video.
S glad you enjoyed it and, yeah, I've given up hope of ever finding that third slipcase! 😁
A full Bone collection video will eventually be made, I'm sure, irrespective of my worries that it would be redundant...
I have an original first issue of Bone from Cartoon Books that I casually picked while browsing a comic shop about 20 years ago. I was surprised to see a 9.8 rated copy go for 12k dollars a couple months ago
Nice find! I also didn't realize those are the kind of prices, but then again I am generally quite clueless about such things! 😁
I still can't believe Netflix was stupid enough to cancel the animated series adaption. It's an awesome comic!
Ah well, the comic remains awesome no matter what, we can all take comfort in that 😁
@@ftloc Do you think another streaming platform like Amazon or Paramount+ will take over? It worked for Nimona
@@terranova1203 I suppose it is possible, but I'm not very sure about the level of transferable development here. I'm sure at some point of time there can be another one, just like with Sandman or Y the Last Man. But it may not be the same people or team who wanted to do this one.
Damnit! I should have never come across this video lol!! Just looked up the entire set and the final 3 books in this special edition is going for $220+ new, but I think I might have to pull the trigger on this purchase and get all 3 in new condition! As another huge fan of bone I never even knew these existed so thank you so much for opening my eyes to this! Going to watch your other BONE videos now, really enjoyd this one! :)
Wow, that's terrific! Just for my clarity - are you referring to the three volume black and white box set Harvest? Or the entire nine volumes in three cases? Or did you mean the colour hardcovers? So glad you enjoyed the video!
I've got the special black and white all-in-one edition! Only 2500 were released, they are all leather bound with gold gilded pages, and gold embossed cover. Signed and numbered by Jeff himself!
It's my favorite piece of my collection. Very rare and fairly expensive....
Fun fact the color version has rewritten/rephrased dialog to make it easier to read for younger audiences.
Yes, the limited edition! It has a cameo here at 0:58 and my video on it is here: czcams.com/video/2p-wBolWTBM/video.html It's such a lovely production!
I'd love to take a look at the actual differences in text and even panels between the versions one day, I've only really registered the typos and spelling mistakes that were changed.
I love the bone books I would read them in school as a kid all the time I wanna re read them
If you do revisit them, let me know what you thought of the return experience! 😁
I recently seen this hardcover edition of Bone in your live stream of what to read after tintin and knew these hardcovers were the editions I wanted to get. I went searching and found all three used.
I'll finish what I'm reading at the moment and finally start the series. With all the great things you say about the series I'm really looking forward to it.
Yay! What a great spot to be in, about to start with a classic! And how wonderful you found these editions!
I like the camera angle. It's like looking at someone standing on a stage and speaking to his/her audience. But I suggest you don't continue it. I will definitely check out bone. You made me interested in Black hole. I really enjoyed it. I am sure I won't be disappointed.
Thanks so much! So glad you liked the video (and Black Hole!) I am sure you will enjoy Bone, it's a great treat for almost anyone, I feel.
I was just rereading the omnibus earlier today, so this was a welcome surprise in my notifications.
Always a good time for a re read of Bone! Hope you enjoyed the video 😁
Camera angle just makes me dive into books
So glad you liked it! It was a bit of an accidental discovery when my first idea didn't work, but now I wonder if I should do a few more videos using the setup!
@@ftloc I insist you do🤗
I have never read Bone in color. I own it in b&w. I generally don’t want b&w comics colored. Having said that I have always liked Bones colored pages that I have seen🤔It really works both ways. Maybe you should do a vid of comics that are like that: good with colors and without.
That is a really interesting topic! I think in livestreams I have participated on other's channels we have mentioned Scott Pilgrim as a foremost example alongside Bone, and as far as books I've spotlighted on this channel, I have found a number of fans of the Marvel recolouring of Akira. Do you have any nominations yourself?
@@ftloc I was thinking the comparison on a very general level meaning any work available in color and b&w would fit in. Usually we think b&w comics - like Bone - that are later published in color. But now there is more and more comics that are originally with colors but later published in b&w. I think in these cases the purpose is usually different(to highlight the art "under" the colors). Like the b&w Incal you just did a video on. That might give more substance for a vid - or be a completely separate one to complete the subject.
I maybe babbling here to hide the fact that I don´t have other concrete examples to give:) But when I got the idea it felt right away more like your thing than mine as I´ve watched your old/new comparison vids of Tintin etc. It´s a thing I´m interested in but far too busy to dig into myself. And I don´t remember owning any comic both in color and b&w, so my competence on this matter is sketchy.
@@ftloc Just remembered that Walking Dead has a color version too. I´ve only read it in b&w and enjoyed it.
Porobobly should read Bones soon X)
Definitely! 😁
I've always read it in the Scholastic paperback, color versions for ease, price point, and availability. I'm currently re-reading it and have been wondering what the original reading experience was like in single issues with ads and back matter.
The singles are really great, a wonderful experience. (Now that they are all out, of course; they were quite sporadic at a time and it took 10 years to get those 55 issues out!)
I love bone, gotta check it out
I'd be curious to see where these editions may turn up!
Do you have the different versions of The Complete Cartoon Epic? I've seen that their are multiple different covers for it.
Yes, not only are there paperback/hardback and colour/BnW distinctions, but the paperback edition has indeed seen at least two different covers that I can think of.
Here's a look at the BnW HC and one of the paperbacks: czcams.com/video/2p-wBolWTBM/video.html
the never ending tower of books. cool angle.
Ha, thanks! It was a last minute arrangement when I couldn't find a tripod, but it worked out ok, what do you think? 😁
@@ftloc its good actually. even the lighting works well with the angle.
@@ftloc I have nothing to say about the book tho😁
Great
So glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
This video should have had an "Oscilloscope Laboratories" credit at the start 😄
Haha! I'm a big fan of David Lean...
Is bone episodic, or one continuous story?
One continuous story, and eventually an epic one at that! There are smaller arcs that make it up, but they all build on what's come before.
@@ftloc Oh ok! That sounds cool.
@@gravitydragon1904 it's a great series, as enjoyable and worthwhile for adults as it is for kids. Give it a shot, if you can!
hi, i'm also from india, can you send those books to me, so, that i could read it
