Is Bone by Jeff Smith really The Lord Of The Rings of comics?

  • Bone is a 55 issue comic book series written and illustrated by Jeff Smith that was published by Cartoon Books and was recently scheduled for an animated series on Netflix. It's often said to be the Lord Of The Rings of comics with its fantasy narrative, so I'm reviewing the complete graphic novel series, to see if it deserves that title.
All of this is spoiler-free, but was just another hype train, or truly something timeless?

HI Maddogg. Thanks for the review!
Just a correction: Bone was originally published (and intended to be B&W). It took some arm-twisting to get Jeff to release a colour edition years after the final issue. Despite the beautiful and successful colour edition, Bone purists usually gravitate towards the B&W editions. The art shines here! It's a special thing all of its own. Just look at the Bone cousins hiding from the rat creatures in the lightning storm! Overall, it's a masterclass in light and dark spaces, shape-language and line art. These nuances occasionally get lost when colour is added, though both editions have their strengths. The 'extra something' that other people revere could well be an appreciation for the form. I can't imagine the 'main villain' you describe having the same impact in colour as it it did in in B&W - for example... it's like having some of the edges shaved off...

Ah, the long awaited Bone review…well worth the wait mate! Ive read the first few arcs online and have been debating for well over a year now to go b&w or colour…you may have just pushed me over the edge.

It was always supposed to be B&W and was released that way until scholastic took over the publishing rights years later and had it coloured. He didn't even colour it himself.

    • @OffMyShelves
      @OffMyShelves Před rokem

@@Jack-gv3mk yeah I know that scholastic had the recolouring done in the early 2000’s but I think it was done by Steve Hamaker who coloured the cover art for the originals and Jeff Smith was well involved in the process. As Jeff isn’t a colourist he would not have coloured it himself anyway tbf, so this colour version is as close to his colour version as we will ever get as I’m pretty sure he oversaw the process. I’m actually still debating over this even now!..I love b&w art work so I’m always leaning towards that. Maybe in another year I will have decided!

One of my favourite comics I just love the innocent charm of this and the world feels grand but keeps things simple and doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and yes colour is the way to go I feel B&W is still neat and dose provide a different feel.
Great review glad you had fun with this one and that you finally read it
Fun fact also Jeff Smith drew the last panel before starting the series kinda like breaking bad’s gun in the trunk scenario

    Best comic ever made.
p.s. I was amused that you followed up thinking the color version of Bone was the original by referencing the LotR movies (like that’s the original).

I’m about a third of the way through and love it. I got the black and white all in one but now I’m reconsidering the color 😍
Great video as always man! 🐶🐶

The B&W One Volume Edition of Bone was among the very first graphic novels I ever picked up and I enjoyed it immensely. 😄👌
Cheers to you, my man! 🥃🥃

Never even heard of bone until a month or so ago. Interested on your thoughts and why it's hyped. I have a feeling it won't be my thing but I've said that before..😁

There's something old-fashioned and yet transgressively generation X about the black & white version that really makes it stand out among kids' comics. I feel that the world feels much expansive and more mysterious in those duotone pages, especially in the early issues with dark angular forest shots and wide views of the mountains and "the valley" of the setting. The black and white edition was how the individual comic issues and the first trade paperbacks were first published, *not* vice versa as (I believe) you stated in this video.

How are you reviewing this and somehow missed the fact that Bone was intended and first released in B&W. You even go further as to saying the exact opposite. It wasn't coloured until scholastic took over the publishing rights years later. He didn't even colour it himself. Good job man. You're killing it.

Seen it but never read it. It reminds me of usagi mygymbo with the art and bubbliness. But you explain it so well I want to give it a read. Your a great salesman bro. And I definitely enjoy a good story. 👍

Bone is an 8/10 for me, the black & white All-In-One edition was been in my periphery at my library, so it egged my curiosity about it. And when I took it out and read it through just at the beginning of the year, while I did like a lot of things like the characters, the humor, and the lore; but it didn’t exactly resonate with me like with Scott Pilgrim, Invincible, or the first 100 issues of Spawn.
