Failed to qualify means they got to Eurovision but missed out on the Grand Final; there are 2 semifinals, each with different songs, and the top 10 of each move onto the Grand Final, along with the "big 5" countries that contribute the most money (UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy) and the host country, so at least 26 as a result. From what I recall, 2010's entry was treated terribly and bullied because Sweden is awesome at pop music and expects not just to qualify, but to do well every single year.

The translation to English butchered his song in 2000 though.
"spirits calling my name" should have been "winds whispering my name"
Here's a translation of the swedish version:
      1st verse:
"I got caught in a darkness, I saw no light.
Despite everything around me was set ablaze.
In the embers' light were my hope and faith
      which whirled away and dissapeared."
      So give me my strenght
Give me power to defend my land
Give me a way/path to go
I see the axe in the warriors hand"
      Chorus:
"Do you want me to turn around
And fight for who I am?
Never will I fail my land
When the winds are whispering my name
      my name"
"The rain that fell got me to hide my sorrow
      And quench my burning thirst
I fled to the mountains when dawn arrived
But suddently I heard a voice
      The winds are whispering
I hear how they are calling my name
      I have a way/path to go
I see the axe in the warriors hand"
      Chorus
      Insert:
      "So give me my strenght
Give me power to defend my land
Give me a way/path to go
I see the axe in the warriors hand"

Even if John Lundvik is listed as the main artist, the Mamas was a big part of the act in 2019, they weren't like ordinary backup singers, they were like a group, together with him, and it should've been called "John Lundvik and The Mamas" or "John Lundvik ft The Mamas", imho. @@bigkevreacts Thanks, Sweden really takes Eurovision seriously, and is one of the countries that has been the most successful, especially for the last decades or so (together with Italy and Ukraine). I recommend the video "Top 52 Countries based on Average Placings in Eurovision Song Contest (1956-2022)"
Swedish songwriters also writes a lot of songs for other Eurovision countries, and a lot of countries hire Swedish backup singers, dancers, choreographers, and Swedish singers have also represented other countries.
But with success, a lot of envy and even hate appears, so if you react to anything that has to do with Eurovision and Sweden, you will probably also get a lot of comments that copypastes the same whiny messages like "Sweden is overrated", "Sweden is the juries favorites", "Sweden only sends radiofriendly pop", "Sweden should sing in Swedish" and so on.
But if you can take that for what it is, then some time in the future, if you get hooked on Eurovision, I recommend you check out or national selection show (Melodifestivalen) too. It's the winner that gets to go to Eurovision, but the other entries are often really good as well.

At times there has been a lot of controversy regarding the Eurovision. Sweden (especially Swedish media) in the 70's was pretty left-leaning and some politicos claimed that commercial=bad, staging protests against the first finals held here (the year after Abba won). Later, the Irish TV company almost went bankrupt because they had to host the finals three years running (Johnny Logan was simply too good, winning two years in a row and writing the winning contribution for Ireland the third year!) and those productions were VERY expensive. Then, the invention of pay phone calls (900-numbers in the US, I think?) turned it from a money sink to a cash cow, with the viewers paying to phone in their votes, so the formula has changed to squeeze as much money as possible from the punters by splitting it up into several elimination stages where they have to keep phoning in to support their favourites. Those protesters in the 70's definitely did have a point.
