- In this video, you will learn how to replace the plastic blades and how to add mowing line to a PolyCut 2-2 or 3-2 mowing head. The process for both the PolyCut 2-2 and PolyCut 3-2 are the same but you will find the mowing heads look slightly different.
Step by step guide:
🔶 The first, and most important step, is to make sure you remove the safety key on the side of the machine. This will remove the risk of the machine turning on whilst you are working on it.
🔶 Prop the machine up so you have access to the mowing head and assess the plastic blades
🔶 If the plastic blades are worn on one side then you can rotate them to even up the wear on both sides. If both sides are worn then you will need to replace the blades. To do this, slide the worn blade off and hook the new plastic blade on and click it into place. Repeat this process until all the worn blades have been replaced or removed.
🔶 To replace the plastic blades with nylon mowing line, you will need approximately 10cm of blue 1.6mm nylon line for each side.
🔶 Once you have removed all of the plastic blades, take your 10cm pieces of nylon line and slide it down through the first slot. Bend the cord back on itself, poke it into the other side and pull tight on the cord.
🔶 Trim any excess line and repeat this process for the opposite side.

Brilliant, thank you. I’ve been scratching my head for weeks on where to load the bloody string. 😆👍
The idea for the string instead of the blades is real good. No blades available near me and they’re kind of expensive for what they are. This should work great. Thanks!
Thank you, I just purchased one for my lawn. I'm a 67 yr old woman that continues to mow and edge my lawn. Your video answered my question. How do you put a string on this 45? Well, your video answered my question. And other CZcamsrs did not add this feature in their video. So a big thank you!!!
Glad we could help! 😁
Amazed at how easy it was to convert the blades to line! I initially bought this tiny trimmer with plastic blades because I had never used a brush cutter before and was intimidated by the big model. I now have the full size battery operated line trimmer and am hoping to get the small polycut working for me as well :)
Thanks for the comment - glad to hear you found it easy to use. Thanks, STIHL GB
I have bought one and find it ideal for a small garden.I am biased as I always buy Stihl, but for what I need it is excellent.
Thanks for the great feedback!
Do they make an auto feed head for this model? Blades always breaking
Hi, thanks for your comment. Which model of grass trimmer do you have? If it's the FSA 45, it comes with the PolyCut 2-2 mowing head as standard and I'm afraid it can't be changed to an AutoCut head, but you can insert lengths of mowing line into the head instead of the plastic blades and there are instructions for how to do that in the video above. Either way, if you find that the plastic blades or mowing line are breaking, you can soak them in water overnight before you use them and that will make them less brittle and prone to breakage. Thanks very much, STIHL GB
I have a FSA 56 STIHL trimmer but I ordered a 3-2 polycut trimmer head? is it compatible with fsa 56?
Hi there, thanks for the comment - the 3-2 polycut trimmer head fits the new FSA 57. The head for the FSA 56 is the AutoCut 2-2. Thanks very much, STIHL GB
@@STIHLGB Thank you for your reply. I would definitely recommend the FSA 56 or FSA 57 battery trimmer. Cutting grass with these trimmers is elegant. 🙂🙂
How about the FSA 86 R ?
Thanks for your comment. The FSA 86 R comes fitted with an AutoCut C 6-2 mowing head as standard. This video shows you how to replace the mowing line on that particular head: czcams.com/video/-oJvXv7fnDI/video.html
Thanks, STIHL GB
I tried the water trick too. Doesn't make a bit of difference. I also have had little luck with the standard heard. The line breaks constantly. Going to try a different type of line and see how that works. My last resort. Not a fan of the STIHL trimmer.
Hi Craig, sorry to hear that. If you are finding that the line is constantly breaking, it may be worth looking into a grass trimmer that can take a thicker line or a duro-cut mowing head. You can find out more about which type of line is best in which situations, on our website here www.stihl.co.uk/en/garden-ideas-and-advice/power-tool-maintenance/grass-trimmer-tips/replacing-trimmer-line#choosing-trimmer-line
The 3-2 looks like the ticket (Does anyone use that term anymore) If I can find one in the USA
STIHL has a policy that you can't buy an accessory and have it shipped to you're home You can order your item and drive and pick it up at your local dealer
The line and blades both break constantly! It is extremely frustrating!!!
Hi Craig, thank you for your comment. A good trick to make your blades less brittle is to soak them in water overnight. It will make them more supple and help them to last longer. Many thanks, STIHL GB
The aftermarket blades are not great. They tend to shatter easily. The line option is much better for long haul.
Thanks for your comment. You can soak the polycut blades in water for 24 hours before use, which does make them more supple and less prone to breakage in the same that it does for trimmer line too. Thanks, STIHL GB
@@STIHLGB Yes I saw you doing that. I will give that a try, thanks.
Ich habs grad entsorgt .. was für ein Sondermüll.
