  • When the time comes to reload the mowing line in your AutoCut C 3-2 head, there are a couple of options available to you. One option is to refill the line spool itself, or you can replace the line spool with a pre-wound spool.
    In this video, we’ll show you in detail how to complete both options.
    Step by step guide:
    🔶 Regardless of which option you choose, it’s important to make sure you have removed the battery or disconnected the power source to remove the risk of the machine accidentally starting whilst you are working on it.
    🔶 Prop the machine up so you can easily access the mowing head.
    ** Reloading the original line spool **
    🔶 The old line usually comes out completely on its own, but any line left still in it should be loose enough to pull it out.
    🔶 To reload your mowing head with a new line, you need to make sure that the arrow on the top of the head is aligned with the two arrows on either side of the white cover. The spool can be refilled with up to 8 metres of either 1.6mm mowing line or up to 5 metres of 2mm line.
    🔶 Take your length of chosen line and push one end through the hole on the side, all the way through so that you have an equal amount of line on either side. When you have enough line either side, wind it up in the direction of the arrows on the cap and it will draw the line in. You will need around 10cm of line either side, so trim any excess line.
    ** Replacing the Line Spool **
    If you don’t want to reload the original line spool then the other option is to replace the line spool itself.
    🔶 To replace the line spool, you will need to press in the two buttons on the sides which will remove the cover, so you can remove the empty spool.
    🔶 When inserting the new spool, poke the line through the holes as shown in the video, and push it into place. The white plastic sleeve must be slotted into the correct sections inside the head itself.
    🔶 Replace the cover, which easily clicks into place and if you have any excess line, trim the ends.

    With mine, the line broke off melting or welding to itself. I was able to pick some of the line out of the spool, and there are several feet of line still trapped inside. What is the best way to remove that plastic sleeve that goes over the spool, without breaking it.

      Hi there, unfortunately the plastic sleeve on the replacement pre-wound line spool is not designed to be removed. Our technical team would normally cut it to remove it, and replace with a new spool. Many thanks, STIHL GB

    One line continues going back in. The grommet fell out and now is lost. My friend has the same FSA 57 and he can use heavier stilhl line. Did this model come with two head options? So frustrated.

      Hi, thanks for your comment. If your friend has had the FSA 57 for a while, it's possible they may have the old version of the head, which uses 2.0mm line. The new version of the head only takes 1.6mm line, I'm afraid. However, if it doesn't seem to be working properly, we would recommend taking it back to a STIHL Approved Dealer and they can take a look at it for you. Thanks, STIHL GB

    I am using the 2mm green line. After I load it and start using the trimmer, and have bumped the line out a couple times, one of the strings disappears into the spool. Is there something I need to do in order to prevent this from happening?

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, thanks for your comment. Before you bump the head, is there less than 25mm of line visible? If it's shorter than 25mm in length, the line might not be able to come out, so you could try bumping the head more regularly. You could also try rewinding the spool - if some of the line has got tangled up inside that could prevent the line coming out as normal. If that doesn't help, we suggest you take it to a STIHL Approved Dealer just in case there is something else wrong with the head. Thanks, STIHL GB

    What is the Stihl Part # for the pre-wound spool that fits the FSA 57 Trimmer?

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  Před 3 lety

      Hi, thanks for your comment. The FSA 57 grass trimmer comes with an AutoCut C 3-2 mowing head as standard and the part number for the replacement line spool for that head is 4009 710 4304. This comes with 1.6mm round and quiet mowing line. Alternatively, you can buy a reel of mowing line and refill the line spool. The 1.6mm line is available in 19 metre reels, or you can also use 2.0mm line in the mowing head and that is available in 14, 60 and 119 metre reels. Let me know if you would like the part number for any of those. Thanks, STIHL GB

    I was having loads of trouble with the line breaking after only going 3 or 4 feet. Spoke to the Local sales shop and confirmed by an online video, that you should soak the line in water for 2 days prior to first use. It seems to have worked very good. My question is, How often do you have to resoak the line in water? Is it just once per season, once per use or something in between?

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  Před 2 lety

      Hi John, thanks for your comment. It’s mainly just recommended before first use, but if you do think it’s becoming brittle (if you haven't used it for some time and it's been stored in a particularly hot, dry place for example) you can do it again. You definitely shouldn't need to do it before every use. Thanks, STIHL GB

    I have this exact spool setup and this method does not work at all on mine. First off, your EXTREMELY lucky if you are able to get the line to exit the hole on the other side, and if you are lucky enough to see it, your never going to be able to use an aide to fish it through because the hole is too small, so at a minimum your going to have to remove the plastic face. Second, there is nothing to grab the line on the inside of the spool so it just free wheels. I have tried everything. There is just simply nothing there. There are marking on the inside of the spool, there are two separate channels, and the easiest way I've found to do it is just simply cut two equal lengths of line, feed them into the corresponding slot in the spool (with it all apart) . Feed it back 180 degrees as illustrated also in the spool and hold the white retainer with one hand and wind it up with the other. To limit frustration, make sure one line is about 8 inches longer than the other, and just wind until the shortest line starts to get within about 8 inches of the slot. Then you just rotate until the long one ends up on the other side then cut them off even. I for the life of me can't see any other way of doing it. I'm very confused by this video and I think that maybe there are possibly a couple different revisions to this spool for it to be this far off.

      Hi, the FSA 57 has an AutoCut C 3-2 mowing head fitted as standard. With this head we recommend 2.0mm mowing line (which is the green STIHL mowing line). It comes as standard with our round and quiet line, but you can also use round line with it too. Thanks, STIHL GB

    On page 30 of my FSA 57 instruction manual it says to remove the plastic retainer from the spool. When I bought my FSA 57 the factory spool wouldn't advance the line until I removed the retainer, after that it was fine.

    • @STIHLGB

      Hi, thanks for your comment. On the FSA 57, you do need the white plastic sleeve in order to make sure the spool is slotted into the right place. You could remove it on the previous model, the FSA 56, but it should remain on for the FSA 57. If it's not working correctly and you would like further advice on switching them over, please do get in touch with our Customer Services team and they can look into it for you. They can be contacted on 01276 20202 or by email to enquiries@stihl.co.uk. Thanks, STIHL Great Britain
