  • In this video, we will be looking at how to change the STIHL plastic blades on a PolyCut 7-3 mowing head.
Read below for a step-by-step walkthrough.
Step 1: The first step to replacing the blades on your PolyCut 7-3 mowing head is to make sure the machine is switched off or the power source is disconnected.
Step 2: Prop the machine up so you can easily access the mowing head.
Step 3: If the plastic blades are worn on one side, you can rotate them to maximise the efficiency of the blades.
Step 4: To remove or rotate the old plastic blades, grip the upper part of the head and unscrew the lower half. Undo it all the way until the bottom part of the head comes off. The black upper part will come off too.
Step 5: Once the upper and lower part of the head has been removed, the plastic blades can be easily rotated or removed from the circular pins.
Step 6: To put the machine back together, place the black part on top to hold everything in place and line up the hexagonal recess with the nut on the end of the drive shaft. You might find it helpful to keep your finger on the nut at the bottom whilst screwing it back on to make sure it all stays in place.
Step 7: Once it has made contact with the thread, continue to screw it up until it is screwed on firmly, then do a final check to make sure all the blades are moving freely and nothing is caught up.

Thanks a lot, this also applied to my FS38, basically. Cheers!

Always a brand new never used trimmer in these “how to” videos... Not quite this simple when the head is worn smooth, and there is grass, weeds, sticks, and dirt binding the thing closed!

Thank you for the feedback. The tool in this video wasn't actually completely new, although the head itself was so that we could show the steps as clearly as possible. We do appreciate your comment though and we will certainly bear this in mind in future when planning future how-to videos. Thanks, STIHL GB

I have that exact model Stihl FS40 and poly cut head.
I can't change the blades on mine because the head itself will not come loose. It's too tight to unscrew

Hi Kaleb, sorry to hear this. Can I suggest that you take it back to your local STIHL Approved dealer so that they can look at it for you in case it's faulty? They may also be able to release it for you. Thanks, STIHL GB

Kaleb I have the same problem. I used the blades one time on the FS 40 and I cannot get the head to unscrew so I can replace the blades.

Mine is the same..won't come off.
And all of this to then spend 20 minutes trying to get it to start. Awful

I dread every time I need to use my polycut because i know it will take an act of god to get it off again. Stihl really needs to improve this design cause it sucks.

I use a channel lock pliers to hold the black piece, then a flat screw driver between the gray and black pieces to unscrew it

lol good luck on an actually used head, you’re going to want 2 sets of channel locks or “tongue and groove” pliers, they can grip and turn properly, don’t squeeze too tight, just enough to not slip.

The PolyCut 7-3 is total garage. The lower part of the head became unseated during normal operation, rendering the lower head stuck. Meaning the lower head spins, but doesn't come off. This attachment has ruined a perfectly good f5-45C weedwhacker. An approved Stihl dealer didn't know what to do with it....

Hi, thanks for your comment. They don't usually get completely stuck unless the rider plate is missing. Our Technical team have suggested that you could try using some penetrating oil but do make sure the threads are cleaned before re-assembling. If you still can't remove it, we recommend taking it back to a STIHL Approved Dealer. Thanks, STIHL GB

Oh now I see, oh no wait I don’t. After an hour and a bag of tools I clearly forgot to add the “Glitter Fairy Dust Easy Removal Protection Program.” Complete waste of a video sir. NOONE NEEDS TO REPLACE ANYTHING ON A NEW MACHINE. Will be returning another piece of high quality marketing again tomorrow. What good is anything that can’t be removed.

      @STIHLGB  Před rokem

Hello, thanks for your comment. I'm afraid we're not quite sure what you mean though - the video isn't suggesting you need to replace the blades on a new machine. But when they wear down, they can be replaced and we just wanted to show people how to do this. I hope that helps, thanks, STIHL GB
