    By the Law of the Lady, no knight who is false may triumph in combat over one who is True! Fine discussion and one of my favourite army books besides. The saving grace of Bretonnia never getting another book is that they surely would not have gotten one so lovely.

    • @SwitchTalkChannel
      @SwitchTalkChannel Před 4 měsíci

      I would advise justice, not revenge, as a general rule. Just wanted to comment that, sorry for the lateness! I assume you've bought some of the models and such by now? Maybe you are now buying Old World since that just came out? Or are you sticking with Fantasy 8th?
      P.S. It's funny because many people play Warhammer to be the evil side (such as 'Nids or Chaos from 40k), as to actually identify with them. That, or they like the Tau for their Communist/caste system (seems to be based on the Indian system and fused to Japanese anime/mecha style). The latter is most common, as most young people are in the Communist direction in the West (most of Gen-Z, at any rate). It's almost universal in the realm of video gaming, and is quite popular in the realm of film fandom/cosplay, as well. Very few people like the space Catholics of Man (in this case, the Empire). It is a satire, but it had a good following of Christians and more conservative types over the years. They don't seem so strong these days. (I've seen a few. For example, Henry Cavil, the actor, also plays Warhammer. And a famous Right libertarian guy called Benjamin on CZcams/online also plays and paints Sigmar warriors. Then, there's a historian CZcamsr that goes against the far-Left (called 'Metatron') who paints Fantasy models and I assume plays it, too. Not sure on his beliefs and politics, but he's certainly more classical and Christian-friendly than most. There are many more, but those are the ones I've come across.)
      Naturally, most Chaos players are not evil (there are other reasons to play them). But I did debate a young woman once who loved the idea of the world-eating evil forces of 40k and shares many of their values/beliefs, and defended it with the argument, 'they're just trying to survive and grow'. Very dark and evil thinking.
      Now I think about it, I'm not shocked you'd find people like that gravitate to simulations of how they're feeling or how they want the world to be (in this case, it's a power fantasy). Clearly, what you often find is young men trying to identify with the hero of the story/the good armies in fighting evil, being gentlemanly in war, and so on. The few women I have come across that used to collect Warhammer were painters, not players, and liked the Vampire Counts. But, I can see women also liking Bretonnia and pirate-based armies (sadly, not enough of those exist).
      Sounds like you're new to the world of Warhammer/Games Workshop? I know this comment is late, but welcome, hhaa. Sorry for the long comment if you read this! :)

      Merde! So I now see. In T9A, the equivalent does this so that has been what has confused me. However, while the loss of rerolls of one to hit does make this quite substantially worse, it's still pretty good. Optionally, giving him the Tress of Isoulde for 20 extra points would restore it to the same level of effectiveness for one charge.

    • @triplecrownwargaming
      @triplecrownwargaming Před 2 lety

      Although I’ve got to say I disagree on the Fay Enchantress. I think she’s really good! And if you point up her special rules and equipment she’d only about 30 points more. Her ability to take a lore that Brets can’t normally access though is almost priceless!

      @@triplecrownwargaming I've only used her a couple of times and while she's good - and changes the army due to the magic lore choice and being able to get first turn - the question is whether she's good enough to not have Green Knight or one of the Lords in a 25% lords game. With 50% Lords or 3,000 points I must admit I'd find her a lot more tempting

      Disruption unfortunately only negates rank bonus in 8th ed- the unit keeps steadfast even when disrupted (see core rules). Unless there's a specific exception for Banner of Lady faq I've missed! Always a pleasure to watch your army reviews. What would you recommend as a starter list for someone new to this faction or Warhammer 8th edition as a whole?

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Před 2 lety +1

      I'd recommend High Elves, Dark Elves, and (slightly behind those) Warriors of chaos. These three factions are amongst the strongest, and the most forgiving and have low-ish model counts so you can get an army to the table. With Dark Elves, a block of Witch elves (with the cauldron if you like), a few 5 man strong dark rider units, a smaller block of executions, a couple of repeater bolt throwers, a couple of units of shades (crossbowmen) and maybe a doomfire warlock or cold one knight unit. A hydra if you like (he's a bit suspect though) Led by a sorceress. That will allow you to play with all of the main troop types and combined arms, and have good shooting, magic, combat. It's a list that's fun to play, you will win games with, and you will learn with. High elves can do a very similar arrangement- just with a slightly weaker core (probably smaller units of vanilla cavalry and archers instead of the witch elves) but better monsters.
      Another new player tip would be- don't assume that just because most reports you see are 2,500 points means you need to get to that before to start playing. Play 1,500 points, or even 1,000- these games can be a bit more vanilla but still great and you can play two in an evening!

    You hit some great points i have been saying for years. Winning with a bretonnian army means you dominated the opponent and it is the best feeling. Loosing with bretonnia is equally as devastating as each loss is a heartbreak.

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Před 2 lety +3

      It isn't official. It is just used very widely in the tournament meta in the UK, and is highly recommended.
      You can play without it and still win, but you will seldom be able to compete with any other armies on equal terms. It makes you even more reliant on your characters, magic, and trebuchets.

    Would you do a beast men review too? Or Mabe a tomb kings one as well! All the low tier codexes are fun.
    Also bretonnia got some special characters in 6th edition in the white dwarfs like Tristan the troubadour

    • @DrBlaxill
      @DrBlaxill  Před 2 lety +2

      Ah yes- a few of the callbacks there from 5th ed where there were some extremely cool Bret special characters who did not make it to the 6th ed codex- Bertrand the Brigand and Repanse de Lyonesse being two others. Generally the WD special characters are considered outside the normal universe of what is selectable for competitive play (although this is just the UK scene in the now) so I don't consider them usable tools.
      I agree entirely that the low tier books are almost inherently more interesting for tacticas. I would like to do more of these reviews but to make them good I need some battlefield experience with the armies first. Realstiically it would take ages to get to the same level as with my warriors of brets with a new army, so what I might do is borrow friend's army and then play 20 games or so with it and see where I get to.

      @@jackruby6696 Good point. Yes, usually it is allowed in my experience but I have never seen anyone use it. I think that this would be an example of where the aesthetic would get in the way- I would be quite happy to raise dead with my Chaos, but not with my Bretonnians. However, from a gamesplaying perspective - and mindful that one has to maximise the works when playing a difficult army - it's probably worth a try to see how it goes. Instinctively, raise the dead type spells might be quite good for Brettonia because we don't have great chaff and are dependent on the charge. Popping up units in front of enemies thus becomes pretty powerful.
