    Warhammer Fantntasy Battles army book reviews... is the best book, High Elves? Dark Elves? Ogre Kingdoms? maybe an Undead like the Vampire Counts... or Tomb Kings. Couldn't be Dwarfs? Lets just say Lizardmen and Chaos, no wait Daemons, defiantly not Bretonnians.
    Its just our opinions guys!

      why would you say Vamps higher? ive put another post above about whats wrong with them:
      Our core is laughably bad (I played a game this week where 37 skeletons killed 5 dwarf warriors to him killing entire unit!) In a 2000pt game if we take a blender lord, he has to be our lvl 4 thus decreasing flexibility and putting all eggs in one basket. Getting into multiple combats is extremely dangerous due to multi crumble. Don't get me wrong I love them and you can play 40 GG and have a good go against most units but they a hard army to do well with compared to say gun line dwarves etc.

    BRO. LMAFO THEY PUT DEMONS IN “C TIER.”
    Demons are S tier. They’re the best army in the game. Full stop.
    Uncomped, No Special Characters Comp, NA single tourney Comped, Swede Comp, ETC Comp you name it . . . Demons are arguably in SSS tier by themselves, and Skaven and Dark Elves are pretty nutty OP in Warhammer 8th.
    Here’s the “real tiers” (you’re welcome).
    S: (could be x3S) Demons, Skaven, Dark Elves
    A: Vampire Counts, Warriors, High Elves, Wood Elves
    B: Ogres, Lizardmen, Chaos Dwarves
    C: Empire, Orcs and Goblins, Bretonnia
    D: Dwarves, Tomb Kings, Dogs of War (DoW approved circuit pack)
    F: Beastmen
    (Side Note: 8th Ed Dwarves didn’t win a international, or large GT (or more than on a single hand), and would auto lose to “kill spells” in Shadow or Death. Initiative tests and 48in Miasma means “they take L’s” over five games in uncomped hammer’.)

I've never played the war game side, but my first & favorite TTRPG was Warhammer Fantasy RPG(not D&D like most people's intro to TTRPG's) so I use models differently, and require a lot less, but I've always wanted to try my hand at war gaming. man feels like every army had so manu nuances to their rules and particularly strong builds it's hard to make a comprehensive list, though this one looks good on a 'pick up and play' basis. Perhaps further videos could look at army slot tier rankings starting with Core, doing named characters in a HQ tier list as well?

  • @kurukblackflame
    @kurukblackflame Před 2 lety +2

    Good stuff :) I always found Skaven to be really strong, though that could be because I was playing with Empire against them. Skaven war machines were just way more powerful than the Empire stuff. They were supposed to be balanced by more dangerous misfires but when my guns misfired they were taken out of action for a while or for the rest of the battle. When the Skaven stuff misfired there was an okay chance that they'd still get to shoot and the shots would be even stronger as a result. They were also supposed to be cowardly but usually ended up being close to unbreakable unless you had a real blender list (which was difficult to do with Empire).
    Dark elves and High elves were both very strong, though in my last game of 8th ed I used Night goblins vs Dark elves and it was a real bloodbath for the elves. I suppose loads of cheap goblin war machines and defence in depth with fanatics is a good counter to a glass cannon like Dark elves :) They were getting cut to pieces by doom divers, rock lobbaz and spear chukkaz but they didn't want to get too close because of the fear of fanatics.

  • @truegregthompson
    @truegregthompson Před 2 lety +4

    Skaven are definitely A tier. I've noticed in your games that Cullen is almost always deployed deep meaning entire units never see combat, and his luck is hilariously bad. They are incredibly reliable thanks to redundancy in their rules and the sheer power of their magic and weapons is hard to compete with, and if you consider their magic items which weren't gutted like 8th Ed books saw they also have more viable options than any proper 8th Ed book save dwarfs.

    • @truegregthompson
      @truegregthompson Před 2 lety +1

      And for HE/DE I give it to DE since in my opinion you are basically rating them in a "this army loses to this other army, which only just loses to this army, who are in turn slightly beat by..." and in this case if we get to the top and see 2 almost identical armies with a few unit changes here or there but mostly just copy/paste jobs as far as roles and stats go.
      Which is where army wide special rules come in to play. Martial Prowess means 1 more rank of attacks but in almost every one of the mirror matches the stats and points are the same or so close that it doesnt matter, and so to get that extra rank the HE unit will be larger and thus cost more, which makes sense. 40 spearmen vs 40 dreadspears cost the same, and to get an extra rank in horde formation you need 50 spearmen facing 40 dreadspears. Those 90 points could go towards a magic banner, or a support unit like a bolt thrower that can remove models before combat starts or 10 bleakswords to charge the flanks on a following turn. Then, both armies have ASF and I5 in most cases but DE have hatred so actually get a reroll to hit, PLUS the Murderous Prowess to reroll 1s to wound. This is a MASSIVE bonus and in an average combat the HE spearmen will cause a total of 3.3 wounds assuming it is 40vs40 for equal points, whereas the DE score 5.83 (rounding both means 3 for the HE and 6 for DE but I will stick to 3 and 5). That puts the DE up 2 for the CR which means that unsupported the HE are probably running even with the reroll from Valour of Ages (avg of 2 dice is 7, they sit at 6). If the HE charge to get the plus 1 bonus they still lose by 1 and only because they still have 4 ranks to fight with due to Martial Prowess. Yet the DE charge gives them the plus 1 CR and even at 30 attacks for losing a rank of spear attacks they still end with 4 wounds to the HE 3, a CR total of +2 still.
      Pheonix Guard vs Black Guard are another big swing for the DE, same cost, same stats but 1 more attack on Black Guard, and the same special rule gaps we saw above. 30 vs 30 and the DE score 17 CR to the HE 9 CR pre ranks and banners even with a 4+ ward. Dragon Princes vs Cold One Knights (5v5) the DP cost a bit less and have an extra attack so thats very good, but stats are otherwise equal and the Cold Ones are better mounts (on avg stupity wont matter). This one comes down to the charge so probably the HE get it and even then it still likely ends with 1 wound each, maybe 2 in favor of the DP but the better special rules and mounts do a lot to close the gap. Executioners vs White Lions is another bloodbath with the Lions losing by 5 wounds due to same stats and inferior special rules with only Stubborn keeping them on the board. Swordmasters are the only time HE have a solid win when compared to their counterpart, again Executioners, but do cost slightly more meaning it will be 30 Executions vs 27 Swordmasters, or will give the Executions a 40 point advantage which we can mainly fill with a Warbanner for another static CR. And at the end of the fight, even with 1 more attack for the front rank and a better WS the Swordmasters will only win by 3 or 4 points depending on if they had 3 less minis or if the DE got the warbanner to balance it.
      The HE still have a lot of great units and characters but so the the DE and I would think that overall they mostly balance out with a big swing going to the DE thanks to witches and no real counterpart to them for the HE. VERY close in a lot of places but some of the combats will require favorable match ups for the HE to come close to winning by more than 1 or 2 CR, which is made worse when the DE find a favorable combat. 30 Swordmasters charge 40 Dreadspears and 11 Swordmasters kill 22 DE. The 30 Executioners hit 40 HE spears and 16 spears die to 8 dead Executions. These 2 matched up probably rely more on out maneuvering your opponent to find those favorable matchups more than any other possible matchup. So I do agree that it would be close overall but the DE are just that much better as far as army special rules go that they have a large advantage.

    Just on what you said about Orcs and Goblins animosity rule being thematic. Back in 4th ed. Undead ghouls had a special rule (p62, Warhammer Armies: Undead) which stopped ghouls from pursuing any fleeing enemies because they were too busy gobbling up the models they just killed. This rule was dropped for later editions of Vampire Counts, but I still love the idea of having a ravenous horde of ghouls filling up their bellies on freshly slaughtered soldiers. That being said it would be quite annoying not having the chance to wipe out the remaining regiment because you can't pursue. Still thematic as all heck though.

    Robin Cruddy. I'll never forget how BAD book you wrote for Tomb Kings:
    - Overhauled the TK magic to match every other magic except just worst in everything. Then kept the magic reliance even though in this edition it's the most unreliable thing in the game. Killed the whole synergy.
    - No more magic phase charges
    - No more double shot catapults
    - Priests can miscast/irresistible force. Mostly don't get any spell through though.
    - Can't heal characters anymore but VC somehow can (yes 6th edition you could even with TK)
    - Nerfed Destroyer of Eternities. Pushed it up to 80p.! It's like 30p. worth item with the new rules and 8th...
    - Somehow Necrolith Colossus has 1 wound less than any other giant in the game
    - Entombed Beneath The Sands comes after charges and units that come that way can't charge on the turn they come in. Made those units useless
    - Scorpion was also nerfed to 3 wounds???? It's already useless with the EBTS changes and keeping the same points...
    - Somehow nerfed Khalida and Settra a lot
    The old 6th Edition armybook would play better in 8th edition than 8th edition armybook if you just reduce the Skeleton Warriors points.

    I actually did fairly well with Beasts of Chaos in 7th edition. When they were really really outdated (I picked them up at the tail end of that book, maybe last 1-1,5 years of its life late 2008 to mid 2010). Went mark of Khorne all over and had lots of Dispel dice with no spellcasters (7 dispel I think). Finished 8th out of 24 and 21st out of 45 in my two best Tournament outings with them, overachieving massively for what was an F tier army at the time. I probably ran a combination which was the only viable one though, (1 Bestigor and 1 Minotaur Glass cannon star, 3-4 Herds, and 2-4 Chariots + 1 centigor unit I believe migt be forgetting something possibly more Minos) Also did horribly in a couple of tournaments though :P. Only played a few games with that Beastmen book you had there. Certainly made it easier to move my units (Beasts of Chaos herds were army special skirmish formations, which looked awesome, but with 3 regiments of 18-24, I always struggled for time despite having no magic or shooting phase :P). Their Ambush rules were awesome though! Not so much in the Beastmen book Anyway love the Beastmen, their lore is ok, but slightly basic, certainly the weakest of the Chaos triad. Great models and rules though. What they struggle with is overprized units in the Beastmen book and a sorely lack of armour ( I had loads of Bestigor and Minotaurs with both books). With Beasts of Chaos atleast I could bank on skirmish formation agains shooting. So weirdly I did a lot better with a criminally outdated Beasts of Chaos around 2009/2010 which few ppl had experience with. It was me and one other player in the tournament circuit in Norway who played them. My first love is Empire,but i actually did far far worse with them in that period. Beasts of Chaos certianly was unique, and had some very fluffy but effective rules/meta/game mechanics

      @@winterh46334 I'd say keep your theme simple and uniform, three colors at best excluding your metallic. The splash of color for each model will come from the beard, if you doing different colors that is. I love Ironhammers color palette but I would say it's a bit more advanced, really makes the army pop tho, if you wanna go with a premade.
      My army was all Terra Cotta style, so stone dwarfs. Each different unit was a different stone, all of them were unified by the magic color I used on things like eyes, mouths, important dangles, etc was blue. Only a small portion of my army was "flesh and blood" dwarfs and all were red heads, just the story I came up with for why that was.

    Wood Elves at C? This must be due to lack of experience against/with them on your part. I'd easily put them on par with the other elves. The finesse part is true and they have a bit of a learning curve, which might indeed push them down to A but no way are they C. :P
    Some of the strongest magic in the game with easy access to Level 5 and all Lores available. Core which is expensive (Eternal Guard), but with a few simple buffs becomes ridiculous - consider putting a large block of them inside of your Venom Thicket (because your free forest is always a Venom Thicket) so they get Poison, they fight with an extra rank like HE and they re-roll 1's to wound like DE, their spears have armour piercing as well, they're inherently Stubborn and put something like Flesh to Stone on them and their low armour doesn't matter anymore, then add some characters and that's a unit nobody will charge into. Stronger shooting than HE, probably on par with DE - even if you play it as only one of each type of arrow - chaf and redirectors just doesn't work vs WE because of this. Like HE they have the Eagles. Warhawk Riders are amazing at removing warmachines (countering their own lack of such). Anyone who has played vs Wild Riders are probably only letting them charge once, after that they'll draw all fire for every following game. Maybe Treekin and Dryads drags down the roster a bit, but not that much!

    • @Anecron1
      @Anecron1 Před 2 lety

      Totally agree. I think there are 2 main reason they ranked WE so low. Lack of games vs good WE players and that they don't use the random terrain rules. E
      Otherwise, every single time there are a couple of woods show up or a river is rolled by the WE player, the WE wins unless they are using a pure fluff list. With that said, there are other armies as well that are rearly played to their full potential in the batreps so perhaps there could have been a few more adjustments in the rankings.

    • @Fagerlund_
      @Fagerlund_ Před 2 lety +3

      Oh yeah, I would change a couple of other things as well, but most of it would be pretty minor so it'd be close enough. WE down at C is so far from where I'd put them though so I found that very surprising! And yeah they did say that WE could go way up with a good player, but I think that's not being fair to the book. While there is more of a learning curve than the other elf armies, I don't think it's THAT steep...

    • @Anecron1
      @Anecron1 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Fagerlund_ True, although it may depend on what you compare it to. Regarding learning curve that is. Then again, it would probably be more accurate to judge them on what the book can bring to the table rather than who is playing the army, but that's a side note.

    Really surprised to see Empire as middle of the pack, they have a LOT going for them.
    In my (limited and uncompetitive) experience their shooting is second to none, save maybe for skinks in very specific matchups.
    Their cavalry with its 1+ AS and S4 combined with a cheap warrior priest is top tier value for points. Also demigryphs exist.
    Their wizards are the most efficient level 8 casters for their points bar goblins (who suck due to lore choices).
    Their skirmish/vanguard game is solid.
    You can make a wide variety of very effective characters for cheap. A particular favourite of mine is a captain on a pegasus, which acts fairly similarly to a poor man's DE master on a dark pegasus.
    Their war machines are excellent.
    Their infantry is decent at least and can do really well. I've lost a block of khorne warriors with halberds to greatswords of only slightly more points investment. I'm inclined to agree that the regiments assisting each other doesn't come up much, but the sharing of special psychology rules is HUGE.
    And to top it all off... I've yet to find a unit that can cost-effectively deal with a steam tank.
    Only thing they're missing is a truly high-end duellist. They can make some decent ones, but no showstoppers. It's also hardly a role you can't do without.
    In my view the extraordinary versatility and wide array of viable rosters also weighs into the value of each roster individually. Your opponent has to respect the possibility of you bringing a gun-line and account for that during army building, even if you end up bringing a cavalry rush. If you play with hiding magic items until combat, your opponent has to wonder if that out-of-position warrior priest or witch hunter has the Van Horstman's speculum.
    I've recently come out of playing a dozen-game long series with almost exactly the stipulations you set out of WoC vs Empire+Dwarfs. No named characters or daemon princes and a wide variety of points limits. Can confirm dwarfs are very strong, but Empire seems absolutely their equal. WoC struck me as good, but surprisingly limited in the amount of truly viable options it had. Mostly boiled down to "What flavour of infantry would you like with your chimaeras, warhounds and chariots?" Granted that's probably skewed by knowing I was up against factions with cannons every time.

      In the current UK tourney scene they are currently allowed to take marks of chaos for free. It really helps (though doesn’t address the overcosting of a number of units and that is their main issue)

    Brettonia plays a different game, it can often outmanuvere and win where no one else would, has access to the best magic lores, and is under rated by the hard counters that can be pulled against them.
    Wood Elves suffer from a general inability to win games. They lack real melee units but can avoid loosing games (which is why they just about never won GTs, having wins and all, but not a high enough kill count)

    • @nehrigen
      @nehrigen Před 2 lety +1

  • @aliveTerraN

    From a utility standpoint yes I agree about the S-tier. But Looking at how different matchups play out, I see alot of lower tier ones being able to give the S-tier one a real challenge.
    mostly due to either combo's or warmachines.

    • @BertockLeg

      Agree. Like Tomb Kings with Arkhan can destroy both lizardmen and ogres by having a lvl 5 death wizard with casket and hierotitan, despite the overall army book not being able to compete on an average match. Or an artillery O&G list can probably decimate everything if they don't start to fail leadership tests

Also I would live to see some end times stuff. Maybe even a ridiculous end times battle

  • @Knoffles

    I think once you start really playing Beastmen you’ll perhaps change your mind as you have with the TKs. Their core is good and not too bad points wise, as is the special chaff. Same could be argued for Bestigor. Primal fury is an amazing rule. It’s the other special choices and rare that are stupidly overcosted and that limits the competitive viable options vs other books.
    The UK tourney scene at present seems to allow free marks on beasts that really helps them (and Bret’s get devastating charge on the knights)

    • @Fenristhegreat
