It’s true that Aang put more focus on Tenzin but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t love all his children. Tenzin just has more of a responsibility to restore an entire culture that was lost to time over a century. I imagine Aang also realized that someone had to train the next Avatar after he passed away.

      @HeadGodoftheGodCouncil Před 17 dny +11

But you don't have to be an airbender to understand and restore the culture though. Aang was a bad father. But he did love his children.

As a fan base we just don't want to admit it to ourselves that Aang was a bad father because we love him so much. And I say bad as in he neglected his children because he concentrated more on being the Avatar than being there for them. And then made it 100 times worse by giving whatever time he had Only to Tenzin since he was an airbender.

I think in a way Aang is a bad father because of him putting so much pressure on Tenzin and also leaving out the others, that is not good parenting. I’m not saying he didn’t love the others but yeah. It’s hard for fans to believe Aang could do such a thing but Aang in his younger years although wise did make mistakes as well. Who knows how Tenzin would have turned out if he didn’t have the only responsibility of making more airbenders, what if he didn’t have any airbenders? Then Aang would have pushed him too hard for no reason. I think that’s where the bad parenting comes in.

@@jonns6294 it depends on what you label as "bad father"... Aangs flaws as a parent are well within the normal range of the things loving, well meaning parents do on a day to day basis all around us. If you call anything less than perfect "bad parenting" then there is no such thing as good parenting.. Hes a normal human who imparted certain insecurities & traumas on his children with some of his decisions...welcome to 90% of the world...Tbh, the best part of the Korra series are moments like these where we see the flaws of the past characters we love. But that doesn't mean we have to paint them with broad strokes such as "bad parent." Thats just as wrong as the portion of the fandom who refuse to believe Aang would ever be less than perfect and treat this as "out of character" writing lol.

I think people often forget that two things can be true. In the context of Kya and Bumi, Aang was a bad father. Neglect in any form is not good and we see the resentment it creates in Kya and Bumi. But that doesn’t mean that’s what Aang intended. I agree with all the hats he had to put on, including keeping a whole culture alive that neglect was almost an inevitable conclusion. But that just adds context, it doesn’t excuse the fact that Aang was not a good father to Kya and Bumi. These characters are nuanced and I appreciate being able to have conversations like this about them. Aang was not a bad person, but neither are his kids for their experiences growing up while still being able to love and appreciate their father.

Aang not being a perfect father makes sense to me given all the burdens of being the Avatar *and* the last airbender weighing on him. This was bound to happen and it makes sense to who Aang was imo. With that said, I don't believe that he loved Kya and Bumi any less, but he definitely could've included them more or taught them the culture of his people alongside Tenzin. I suppose not everyone can be a great parent despite being a good person, but that's okay. Everyone isn't perfect, they have their flaws and Aang (despite what some fans say) is no exception.
Loved that last scene with Korra reconciling with her parents, especially with her father. It was a really heartwarming thing to see that despite their differences and issues at the moment, they'll always put family first. Family moments in Avatar are always spot-on! Tenzin's family moments and Korra's family moments, honestly one of my favorite aspects of this season ❤
Korra using Naga to threaten the judge gives me chills even though it isn't exactly a good thing for an Avatar to do. It actually reminded me of when Roku barged into Sozin's throne room, wrecked it up, and threatened his life lol. When Avatars get mad, they sure get scary threatening 😅

Everyone wants what they don't have, Rumi envied being a bender as a non bender to the Avatars Bender family. Kaya saw the attention Tenzin was getting and her sacrifice to care for her mom and not her brothers. Finally Tenzin saw how free her siblings were while he was burdened with his dads baggage.
Aang also didn't seem to have a parent to role modal, and his father in law was an absent father, so not so many people to source guidance from. Also Air benders are a communal society, so the parenting process is far removed from him. But at the end of the day every parent makes mistakes. I'm sure they did their best. It would be unrealistic to portray a perfect fanfiction life . If we ever see adult day guitar with kids that would be interesting to see, what the struggle was like from their perspective.

Aang wasn’t necessarily a bad father. I’m sure Aang no doubt loved all of his kids dearly, but it would make sense that he fawned over Tenzin a little bit more since Kya was a waterbender and Bumi was a non-bender. Tenzin on the other hand was the only one to inherit Airbending and it was Aang’s greatest wish to revive the Air Nation. Let’s be honest here there is no such thing as the perfect father, mother, wife, husband, sibling.. perfection doesn’t exist in this world period. What really matters is who you are on the inside and out.

That's precisely why they wrote adult Aang the way they did, to show that nobody, i.e. no parent, is perfect. I believe. When it comes down to it Aang neglected his children. Point blank period. Never gave them nearly enough attention as he did to Tenzin. Doesn't mean he didn't love them with all his heart, but as children actions speak Waaaay louder than words do.
In my opinion kya and bumi Should have been on all those trips with Aang and tenzin. They may not of been airbenders but they Are part of the Air Nation, part of the Legacy.

People seem to forget that this is just the kids' version of their childhood. If you see it from an adult perspective it makes sense. These weren't vacations. They were tutorials in bending. Kya is a waterbender so she needed to be trained by her mother. That's something people rarely remember. That leaves Bumi, the only non-bender. It wouldn't be fair to Kya if her father brought both sons with him in a journey and not his daughter. But she was taught by Katara so the practical thing was to leave her and Bumi with their mother. Considering Bumi's personality, it might also have been too much traveling with him as one of three kids. (Flashback: Milo in LOK.) So, no, Aang wasn't a bad parent. Just practical. You really think Katara would let him get away with being a shitty Dad? No, she obviously thought this was fair and Katara was the warrior of fairness.

Plus Aang had to rebuild the world, while also keeping the airnation culture alive plus being a fulltime parent something was bout to go wrong because there's only so much one person can do. I also think that kya and bumi aren't focusing on the good parts that They had with Aang I'm betting they had Amazing fun and Deep talks. But I also wish they had said something like this in LOK instead of just leaving it so Vague they could've easily had them(kya & bumi) realize they had a Great relationship with Aang as well they were just jealous of the special connection Aang and tenzin had through Airbending which does happen in families as well it's not always Favoritism sometimes it's just jealousy or perspective. or instead they could've had Katara say something like "We always went on Family trips " or "your father loved you and was proud of you both Especially you Bumi " instead they just drop big bombs like Dad loved you more and never Addressed it Again or That Aang wasnt proud of bumi because he was a non bender so that's why he joined the military.
I dont understand why the show made it seem like he didn't love them. Unless it's the whole "The Grass is green'er on the other side" thing like I mentioned earlier they just didn't didn't realize how good there relationship was with Aang. Aang could've allowed Kya and Bumi to follow him on all those trips because as we know from Tenzin, he wasn't just training 24/7 with Aang.. he literally said he built sand castles on Ember Island etc. Aang could've taught Kya and Bumi the Air Nomad Culture like those Air Acolytes did (Pema and all those non bending people in the Air Temples)
Kya could've expanded her fighting styles more by bending water but with the moves of Air culture just like how Korra's airbending style is more Modern style very aggressive or like Katara when she did that Earthbending move against Hama.
Aang is just a bad father, we don't have to make excuses for him and not everyone is perfect.

@@chrisjacobsen7265 No, Kya only knew (barely btw) about the Guru thing and it wasn't specifically said that it was Aang who taught her or gave her the knowledge plus it was implied that Tenzin was the one that told her because Kya tried to reminisce with Pema and Tenzin replied with "yes I remember" so stop trying to make it seem like Aang did his job when he didn't.

I definitely dont think Aang was a bad father And loved his kids very much. He basically had to police the world and help build it, while rebuilding an entire culture WHILE 😥 being a fulltime parent something was going to give and go wrong or at least not as he planned I'm surprised Aang was still able to function with all that stress plus I'm pretty sure he loved his kids but he was just busy I think he went on trips with them and everything but they where jealous of him and tenzin bond . Look at how military parents are. And cop parents are now make that world wide instead of just one city.

Idk man, Aang was a bad father in the fact he didnt include all of his kids in certain things. But what can he do if Kya and Bumi weren’t interested in Air bender culture. Is he supposed to force them to learn? I feel like its kind of hypocritical for them to go at Tenzin for that when they had no interest in it.

There are people that say that Aang was a bad father but I don't think so. Without being too spoiler-y Aang wanted Bumi and Kya there but they chose not to involve themselves in Air Nation culture, and that's on them. Relationships are a two way street, and Aang could only do so much. I feel if Aang failed any of his children it was Tenzin. There was so much pressure on Tenzin and he tried so hard to live up to his father, that it was simply impossible.

Aang was not a bad father. But as the Avatar, he's not allowed to prioritize his family over the world. As harsh as it may sound, Tenzin is more important to the world than Kya and Bumi. So Aang had to spend the little free time he had mentoring Tenzin. But he didn't exclude his other children from his culture, they just weren't as interested in it at the time because they didn't relate as much to airbending. And they weren't angry at Tenzin for supposedly being the golden child, they were angry at him for thinking Aang was perfect and that carrying his legacy is his responsibility alone.

It's not that he was a bad father, it's that he wasn't the best father to his other 2 non Airbender children. As someone who grew up with a father who is well regarded and respected, who in reality wasn't that great a father, or husband, while still being an all-around decent person eventually to me and my siblings as we've gotten older, I can appreciate a deconstruction of Aang and Toph as being not so good parents to their kids. (Oh, I can not wait for ya'll to get to the next books, Lin gets an arc in regards to her issues with her mother, that is JUICEY)

Hey Avatar Meesh and Avatar Dee "Happy Monday". I hope you two had a wonderful weekend. I wouldn't say Aang is a terrible father. But at the same time he wasn't perfect. I feel he favored Tenzin more than Bumi and Kya. Because Tenzin is an Airbender. Which is messed up.
I feel bad for Bolin for being in an abusive relationship. Korra role as Avatar is truly being tested as she is caught in a conflict between the Northern Water Tribe and Southern Air Tribe.
Varrick is hilarious. Unalaq being bad wasn't surprising. But anyway I hope you two have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing.
