    Man, it reminds me of the performance of remote play with the PS Vita and the PS4, at least the PS Vita can play its own games and it is pocketable.

      The vita is actually a separate gaming device the portal isn’t it’s more comparable to the Wii U gamepad

      The portal is ment to give ps5 quality games. Not lower individual specs of gaming. The switch is ahead of its game for this one. The controls are superior on the portal.

    Companies need to stop going for these kinds of devices. Input lag needs to be solved first before these kinds of products become something worth buying.

      Input lag is not something that can be *fixed* even local streaming has it

      It's resolved. It's virtually indistinguishable from normal console play. A difference of about 18ms

      I remote play and cloud play all the time. I have 0 input lag or dropped frames. If you have good internet and a good router it is indistinguishable from playing on your console. Picture quality may suffer tiny bit but that's it

      Lag on this will be dependent on your network setup. If your PS5 is not connected wired and you complain about lag, that is your fault

    This is why the PS Portal needs a way to connect to the PS5 directly through a wireless connection. It would be the best way to stream when at home while providing a very fast signal straight to the Portal itself. It also wouldn't be reliant on your internet connection

      i don't think the PS5 makes a hotspot like PS4 which was actually designed with remote play in mind

      Certian ps-vita 1000 models could also use 3g "if you signed up with at&t" to play games using that data on the go. This thing.. NOPE.

    Honestly, I've watched about 5 or 6 review videos and yours is perhaps the most honest and helpful one yet. I've been trying to figure out whether or not this thing performs any better than a Backbone when it comes to latency over a local network and you've answered the question pretty directly. Thanks man!

      connected to wifi looks worse than when I connect with my backbone thru my 5G Network on tmobile I mean why would someone get this?? maybe an update will fix this?? for now I'm skeptical on this device well see!!!!

      It’s the same as the backbone the stuttering is irritating and latency is noticeable keep your money in the pocket something is wrong with the people at sony

      would you pay the $800 for one? vita flopped and it was only $200. steam decks sell at loss and make it up with steam sells. other similar devices go for $800 and more.

      People can’t seem to understand that they would have had to charge like $600 at least for something like that. Not gonna happen. They can’t make a handheld that costs more than their console 🤦‍♂️

    You see during the PSP era we had ad-hoc which gave it a solid connection. But the distance was limited and also the games will stand alone on the handheld. While making it not stand alone it's going to tank product. I can see a viable for $100 but not 200.

    only way to stop input lag is if you use a time machine, you have to get to the end to send it back before it happens.

    I’ve done the same thing to my HTC Vive Pro 2 headset. I was taking apart to see if I could swap out the Lenses and one of the ribbon cables snapped. It hurt my feelings. So I know how you feel. I wonder if you’re able to plug directly into the PS5 and just play directly using the screen as your TV….?

    Streaming to my Odin Lite locally works really well and is always smooth. Interesting that this dedicated device seems to be having so many issues.

      @@I_Vented If you're using remote play in your home then your internet speed doesn't matter. Do you know if your router has a 5ghz mode? If it does then that's what you should be using. If it doesn't, then that's probably why you're stuck at 720p.

    This is, in my opinion, the most practical usage for a device like this. I travel a lot for work and would be on a different network than my ps5 and I can already say that lag would not be enjoyable for me at all. Great review! I’m gonna have to pass on this until they finally figure out streaming devices because the technology is just not there yet.

    i suppose the advantage of Portal is its tactility vs other ad hoc solutions like the BackBone and whatnot. Also, i'll bet $50 the decision to make the headset proprietary to the Portal was a decision made by an MBA who has no interest in gaming, only the bottom dollar.

      You have to keep your controller covered when you’re not using it. Use the cover it comes with , that will keep the dust out

    wish they approached this more like a wii u gamepad for home use along with wifi, since that had a direct connection, the area i live in streaming games is a no-go but the wii u eliminated that as a concern. also seems really cumbersome to travel with anyway...

      @@propeldragon generally referring to being able to connect to your ps5 thru wifi anywhere that has it, and it seems way more inconvenient than just using your phone w/ a controller attachment in comparison. so its purpose seems just poorly thought out.

    Subbed to Smokin Silicon and a bunch of videos are interesting... I'd even do such content if I had the money and some other things since other than gaming I get somehow happier when messing around with parts to make even just basic PCs (although I know no one in my neighborhood would possibly buy such PCs)

    This reminds me of exactly how the Vita played on the PS4 remote play. It would play fine on some games but intense moments it would trash the quality. With that being said, i might pick this up!

      I tried remote play with so many devices (also the vita) and it was never fun and i stopped playing after 10 to 20 minutes. With the portal it's the first time i really love it. I've played yesterday over 6 hours and beat the last boss in spiderman 2 without problems. I allready love the 200 $ portal more than my 700 $ rog ally. But i must say, i have a really good internet connection: 350 download and 45 upload.

    The experience for this is gonna be YMMV based on your internet connections. You should’ve provided your speeds at home and at the office to give us an idea of your internet

    I’m sure there will be further updates to the device. There was an article that I read today that Sony isn’t trying to make a profit from this but trying to increase the usage of ps5. It appears that Sony in the future could promote cloud gaming in the future with the device based on the implied statement in the article.

    Just seems like a slightly better WII-U Gamepad... Unfortunate to break it while trying to take it apart, but it was for science, and now other people can be aware of it if they take it apart also.

      I'd say its different because unlike the Wii U, no game will be built with the functionality of a second screen on the Portal.
      The Wii U could do Remote play of course with games that only needed the one screen, but Wii U games also used the screen creatively.
      Also, the Wii doesn't seem to have as much input lag in my time using it.

      The gamepad had to be near the Wii U to work, had much lower resolution and didn't work for every game on its own.

      @@yusuf8938 hence why I said "its different" it wasn't a device for remote play, it had SOME games that were able to just be played on the tablet alone. It was a part of the console, something devs made their games around. The PlayStation portal won't have that.

    Well it’s actually fixable especially if you ever taken apart a PS5 controller before, I know I have especially installing extremerate custom parts and back paddles and clicky triggers to a regular PS5 controller. So your PlayStation Portal is a easy fix. Great video God Bless

    I just got my Portal today and it's been amazing. Now I've only tried it from my house but so far there's been like no leg on Call of Duty and it's been looking amazing and playing amazing!

    I've honestly had no problem with my portal. My connection to my ps5 is always rock solid and it performed nearly just as well when in a hotel. I personally couldn't be happier.

      ​@lomt7203 it really depends. For the quality of the product I'd say yes. Hands down for my lifestyle it's been an amazing way for me to game in times I usually wouldn't be able to. If you think you'd be able to get use out of it I'd say go for it. Because when I personally use it the experience for me has far surpassed my expectations.

What they're saying is that they would rather have a new handheld console, I think a lot of people would rather have a new Sony handheld rather than something that is as limited and underwhelming as the PSPortal.

      @@PowerSynopsis it's a gamble for Sony considering the failure of the vita and psp. A handheld that natively plays ps5 quality games would cost more than a ps5. It would be prohibitively expensive for most consumers. It would be a consumer failure. This is considering the technology is even possible.
      That's where my point went over your head. The portal is the best case scenario for people to play ps5 games in a handheld form factor. So either you value it Or you don't and do not buy it. Problem solved.

    Sony could have made this thing a digital console. So no game card but you can still download PS5 games digitally and play them off line. Put a cheaper processor in there that runs the games at a lower setting 1080p would be just fine for this. Missed opportunity.

      @@ricoxkiller what Sony could have easily put a weaker version of the PS5s APU in this thing and make it a all digital machine and just play PS5 games at lower setting 1080p 60fps with no ray tracing or fidelity modes would have worked just fine. I know how the tech works bud it wouldn’t be hard to do that the price would cost more but that would be an option I’m sure people would be okay with.

      @@ryans413 Ah so what you don't understand is how niche of a product it would be and it would suffer the same fate as the vita and psp. Not only would it price out most Sony consumers, but it would put the price point exactly where other handheld consoles are, putting it in direct competition with them.
      It's not a good idea. Sony has had the tech to do it, but they also have analysts that recommend against it. Sure, the vocal minority on the internet would love it, but they do not make enough of a market to warrant it.

      A cheap processor can't handle PS5 games. 1080p would also be too much for a lot of games. There are a lot of new big games on the 700 $ rog ally which can't handle 720p 30 fps. So a digital PS5 handheld would cost over 700 $ only to handle 720p 30 fps in some games. I don't think enough people would buy it.

You can watch some youtube videos about the 700 $ rog ally and then you know what a handheld is capable at this time. 1080p 60fps is impossible at this time, even for a premium 700 $ handheld. 720 p 30 fps is more realistic and even this isn't guaranteed in new big games.

    on xbox all you need is gamepass and can basically play you're game on anything. on phone or tablets all you need is the xbox app which you can remote play which basically what this does. Sony is scummy for selling this as a whole device for just streaming games from your PS5 lol. should've just make a PSP2

    If only they added the option to connect to your ps5 directly instead of over your wifi like the psvita.Psvita remote play used to work without a internet connection as long as your in the same room as your ps4.

    For better connection unplug hdmi from ps5 and for image quality you need to adjust it on the ps5 for it to show on portal? Its still new so im sure and update would fix most the issues

    They should allow connection over USBC for when you’re in close proximity to the PS5, and when you disconnect the usbc it swaps over to streaming until you plug it back in.

It would just be a nice feature allowing for more competitive games. It would’ve been so easy for them to implement. Or maybe your ps5 and monitor are close to your bed but facing away and you don’t wanna sit at your desk (this is how my setup is)

    I've used remote play on my Xbox Series X every day and have never had a issue. No lag, decent image quality. It's disappointing that Playstation can't do it at least as good. It does make a difference connecting the system with a lan cable vs Wi-Fi

    The PS portal is not only doing it to yours is also doing it to everybody else who's been unboxing and testing it out today so you're not the only one PlayStation has an update to do otherwise it's pretty much a paperweight if it goes out and won't connect to your Wi-Fi

    The smaller joysticks might have been what they did to try and reduced the chance of stick drift? Only time will tell but i would think there was a reason to making them different.

    I know you can play games on this on PS5 with Remote play? But are you able to connect this to the PS4 for remote play and play your PS4 games? I would love to see a video on that and if your PS5 doesn’t have a disc drive for movies and you can use Remote play on this with a PS4 then maybe you can play moveez on your PS4 if you don’t have a PS5 with a disk slot, and watch movies on your portal, technically
