I’ve only recently received my first banggood order, the Veiko 30cm precision square, which I’m very pleased with at £21, it took 3 weeks to arrive. I’m also interested in those ratchet clamps 👍.

For the price they seem great value. I too was looking at the square and corner clamps. Regards JP

My Irwin clamps have the large thumb turns on, so you can undo them, maybe the design has changed?
I also have the ratchet clamps from Banggood, had them about a year now, and they are great, never any issues 👍

Interesting. I bought the one I showed from screw fix about 6 weeks ago. I wonder if Irwin makes that model specifically for Screwfix? Regards JP

I’ve probably said this before, but I have become quite a customer of Banggood tools; more accurately, Veiko tools that you can buy through Banggood. Rather like you, I started cautiously with ruler and square; they proved to be spot on. Now that’s a fairly vague term I know but I measured the accuracy of the square for instance by drawing a line along the long bar when placing the square against the edge of a piece of ply or mdf; then flip the square over with the square now on the other side; draw another line and, for perfection, these lines are parallel to each other. For my square, using an 0.5mm lead in the mechanical pencil, there was a slight diverge at the extreme -less than 0.5mm - and that was spot on for me.
So I’ve bought more things from Banggood - different rulers, different squares, a European hinge jig, kerf measure, radius kit etc. - and all have proved to be of the same excellent quality.
The same as another respondent, the thought of supporting the Chinese Government is something that I would much rather not do. I take a few things into account to assuage my conscience:
I understand that many of the other quality tools from UK and US companies are also made in China - quite probably in the same factory as most makes. That doesn’t mean that all the rulers, for example, from that factory are the same quality as buyers effectively tell the Chinese factory what price point they want to pay - and the factory makes to that price point. Not vastly similar to fruit packing warehouses near where I live. A son in law took an interim job in one of these and different grades of apples go to different retailers; an example might be, Grade AA go to M&S, grade C goes to Aldi.
I contribute monthly anyway to charities that support those abroad who need it most
I would certainly buy UK or US products if they were made in their home countries and the premium price above Veiko was affordable to me. Currently, it isn’t affordable. Why don’t/cant the US or UK big tool companies offer the same tools to the same quality at roughly equivalent prices? In these days of CNC manufacture, the amount of labour cost in a product is much, much less than it used to be 20, 30 years ago. The price of the raw materials is a global issue and doesn’t differ greatly from country to country. So, my suspicion is that it is not the case that those big tool companies cannot match Veiko prices; they feel that don’t need to as there are sufficient buyers at their premium price to satisfy them; reduce the price and they may not sell much more but their profit margins nose-dive. I believe that it will not be until market forces make them (sales drop in favour of places like Banggood) that this will happen.

Theo, you raise some fantastic points here. I also do not understand how Chinese products get round the import duty side. Peter Millard bought a fantastic rail support from the US and paid £55 import duty. Thank you for supporting the SWL channel. Regards JP

@@Smallbarnworkshop as I understand it - until some one who knows rather than my half knowledge - for goods up to £135 value, there is no import duty; for goods above that, import duty is 2.5% but some goods are treated differently. What I don’t know is how that £135 is applied; for instance, if I bought cramps that, for 10, came to £150; would I pay import tax whereas, if I bought 5 but twice, there is no import duty. I know that, before we left the EU, I could send gifts to our family in Australia without incurring any duties because Australia and the EU had an agreement. Now, I have to complete a customs form before I send and there is the potential for our son over there to have to pay Australian import tax. So, it’s complex and, seemingly, a muddle; but what do you expect from politicians (of any persuasion).

You are right- the quality of the products from China depend heavily on the specification and quality control of the company ordering. I have had some experience of this- do not ask for 10 samples of an injection molded part- they will print 1000 and send the best 10. Ask for 500... Constant vigilance is required. Many companies are moving such production to Eastern Europe - not much dearer and more trustworthy. There are several Chinese companies selling LED UVC lamps (incl Banggood)- most are complete fakes. True UVC modules are recognizable by eye- and they are not present in these products.

@@Smallbarnworkshop Much depends on the method of transport- post is often ignored. Carrier companies have made a business of it- they charge you admin to process your duties, so they have an interest in making sure that you pay.

Yes I too bought Banggood ratchet clamps. Pretty good considering I had bought 2 Festool ones prior. Almost 4 clamps for the prince of a single Festool. To be fair the Festool ones are nicer but I will struggle to justify buying any more.

I have the bessey version of the ratcheting clamps and they're easily my most used and favorite hold downs in the shop. Not terrible pricing on amazon; $34 each, which is still kind of expensive, but these are lifetime tools, so buying a couple here and there isn't that bad of a wallet hit.

I have 8 of the veiko mft clamps and after a years worth of use I can honestly say “they are by far my Best Buy.” Exactly the BBC same as festool and Axminster version but so much better because of the price.

Hi, well I've got the same ratchet clamps and i do like them. The only drawbacks are: there's no end stop, so in some situations the ratched end just slides off and you need to out some padding on the clamping surface to prevent marring of your Work piece. Other than that they are of a great price quality value
