Scott, I had the same problem with a workbench, What i ended up doing is cutting a pc of 3/4” furniture birch plywood to 36”x48”. I also placed the 3/4” bench dog holes every 4” across and the length of the plywood. I just put that pc on saw horses and viola, i have a work bench modeled after the mft table. (Which by the way i have and love) what i love about the plywood work bench is its light and easy to move around. Keep up the good work.
As a carpenter myself, I must admit when I saw you building that workbench - I thought fuck lugging that big ass thing around all day. 😂
I built a similar bench . Made it in two sections. I put a spot in one of them for a miter saw . Works nice because if the space where I’m working is tight I only use half of it .
I love watching your videos! The plywood wall project was the first few of your videos that I watched, and I saw you using those clamps and immediately thought, "What are those clamps, they work like Festool quick clamps, (maybe cheaper?). I should get some! I only discovered your channel about a month ago and I'm hooked! Super happy to learn from you that Makita and Bessey have some equal options to Festools. despite having drunk the Festool kool-aid 16 years ago when they launched in the US with my first vac and sander. As an Industrial Designer, I love using well-designed tools. Thinking about redoing the kitchen cabinets myself. Very glad you included your dad's cracked shower floor in this video since I just arrived at my parents where I am addressing a similar situation. Wish you showed the removing of the shower pan though.

For the longest time I had two torsion beams which were 2 feet wide and 7 feet long (so I could fit them in the bed of my truck). They worked for me for onsite work for the longest time; however, I am not a builder. I am a hobbyist woodworker and handyman. Best of luck to you for figuring what will suit you the best!

You need wheels on one end so you can wheel the bench around instead of lugging it.
Recently got a wet grinder through Machinery Warehouse. It has a tool holder to keep chisels square with the stone & a leather wheel for final dressing. My chisels have never been so sharp

Nice stuff, I have smaller version of that bench, that folds into the back of a portable tool trolley, bench is about 1200 by 600. Also building attachable side tables so that I can rip full sheets if need be, but don’t need them all the time, hence the attachable nature of them.
The trolley is of course on wheels so I can push it around, and it holds four shelves with boxes to hold tools and screws etc.

I made the same stile bench years a go but i made it in 2 sections (18’x6’) sections and it works well and ease move
I built an 8x4 bench like that in two 2ft wide sections. I’d build your new on in two sections if you can use one your laughing but have the option of the extra space if not
Hi Scott, for you next table that you make. Only make the top. Basically a sheet off ply with the same holes. Also you can cut a handle in it to carry.
Much lighter and better for transportation and storage.
Hey Scott, the guy that designed that bench actually said the same stuff about it being too bulky, and he has made a V2 of it, which I think you will find waaaay better, it has a few extra bits that you might find super useful, and is twice as portable. It would be wicked to see a video of you making that one!

TBH mate I did think almost three sheets of ply might be too heavy to easily lug around jobs...so I built a smaller one and I'm stoked with it

I noticed you use three framing guns, airbow, hitachi and the pass load.
Which would you consider the best. I am in Boston. I’ve never seen the airbow before . The hitachi has just been on the market here for the last year or so.

Hi Scott have you considered bora centipede? I do my carpentry and cutting all on it and just needs 1" foam and half inch plywood any grade , get the 4x8 version
You could perhaps mount casters at the bottom edge of the workbench, use the non-swivel kind. Then you will be able to move the workbench out of the van much easier and just roll it into place.
There is a video about modifying Irwin quickgrip clamps to do what those clamps do.
Puncture proof soles are great for anymore working extensive demolition. My dad doesn’t feel his feet and has walked on nails more than once
Have you though about making two smaller ones then can have one at either end of what you are working on like a saw horse I do similar with two MFT tables
Drill a couple of big holes underneath and clamp those legs on when you set up Scott!

After sharpening, you should burnish the edge. Sharpening creates a lot of micro tears at the tip of the blade. A burnisher flattens those tears back into the metal, and you end up with an even sharper blade. Works every time. This is why teh Burnisher was invented.

Any idea why the shower tray failed and cracked like that? Uneven floor?
Has anyone got any tips for removing butenol from steel and timber with out using a flame torch ? I've been using a multitool, skillsaw and knife /scraper just wondering if there is a quicker way
If its possible to rip in half try it and maybe add hinges on one side to join the two. Then you could fold it closed for half size and fold it open for full size areas. Also could add a few wheels at the corners to help with portability. Keep up the good work brother.
That Paulk style bench is supposed to be portable but it’s not really. I built one and love using it but it’s way too cumbersome. Love your channel . Keep the videos coming.

I finished a long day of moving a huge water tank which we cut in half to get up a large flight of steep deck stairs. When finished I hosed off the stairs with water to clean up the debris.
My soles glided on the slick deck surface and I bounced down the stairs backwards banging my lower back vertabrae on every step.
I cannot describe the pain, plus time off to heal.
All because I let my souls wear thin.
Great video Scott. Have you seen the UJK Part Guide system from Axminster Tools in the UK? Bought the Mk I (Mk II out now) and have built a workshop and also a portable cutting station from 18mm MRMDF. The guy that invented it has loads of CZcams vids on this and you can bash out a speedy cutting station in less than 15 mins!
Hi Scott, I also built one of those work benches, but I modified the design so it's two 8' by 2' sections with four legs so I can set it up as one long 16' bench or in an L shape or two separate units or just use one.
Do you have pictures of that setup? That is an interesting idea. What sort of legs do you use? I like the idea of the wooden sawhorses. These won't fit in the workbench after changing the dimensions. So I'm curious about how the redesign comes together.
@@adriaan7627 I do I'll add them to my next reply, I've used the ply wood legs sameish design just a lot narrower four legs in total two for each section. Then drilled holes on each side and end of both units so i can bolt them together if required. I find them a lot more useable and easy to move than one large 8'x4' unit

Is it possible to cut your new bench in half along its longest dimension? Then add new sides on each, then carry one or two benches to the job site as needed. If you need two carry each to the work horses and fasten to horses. Or you could add foldout legs to each, then when you need a bigger workbench, set them side by side and clamp together from underneath. Or some sort of bolt system through the two sides that draw the two workbenches tight up against each other. You would need a way to access the inner part of the table. I plan on making two 2x6 tables of similar design and maybe using some very lightweight plywood I have seen Ron Paulk use. But as of yet, that plywood isn't available in my area.

I was semi-joking last time - but seriously take a look at plastic pallets mate... they're available in a range of sizes, they're strong, light-ish at about 7kg, they're cheap/free (trademe, facebook markets, or just hunt around some industrial areas) so it's not an expensive experiment, and if it actually works out for you, replacement 'parts' are cheap and readily available. You can get the type with grid tops - they have rubber non-slip pads built in by the way, or, you could get a solid top type (e.g. www.secureaload.co.nz/pp_used.html ) and drill the holes you want. They have the open sides just like the paulk table. The main question mark, (apart from how would you live with the aesthetic lol) is fitting the legs. I've got a bunch of them for another project, but right now I have them in three stacks for a work platform for the posts and rails for my fence: imgur.com/a/Ot3kqVg

Just an idea (ignore if it does not make sense :) ) ... cut the workbench exactly in half, reinforce the side you have cut (maybe with a ply-wood side wall, then at the bottom of each half (where they originally would meet, put some sort of bolt down device that tighten's them together for the times you need the full bench. This way, you'll have 2 smaller benches or 1 big bench when you need it. Just a thought :) Keep up the good work.

Would splitting your existing bench in two so you have a smaller bench or clip the two halves back together when necessary. Making for a more manageable bench..

are those steel capped boots? Just no steel sole?
Do your boots have steel mid-soles? If so, no should prevent nail from going through, if not then yes, that's why if penetration injury is identified on risk assessment for a site in UK, steel mid-soles are required. All our waste site inspectors need to have them.
I had to laugh when I saw the Bosch dust bag. I knew exactly what was about to happen. I think all us Dewalt Table saw users have the same one. Nice pickup. That bag works great btw. You’ll really be glad you got it.

JuiceBanger1 I’m not really sure. You can can use Amazon right? Lol. Mine is a Bosch TS1004. But I have a little bit different saw than his. I have the job site table saw that is on the rolling cart. Not sure if the dust port diameter is different or not. You could easily google it and go see some pics and reviews on Amazon. Good luck brother.

Maybe drill a couple holes through your horses and use the clamps to attach them to the bench top or get clasps/chest latches and and use them to secure them together. Then you could have different size bench tops you could use with the same base.

You should try Finnish Sievi safety working shoes. The best in the world. I don´t know if they are at hand in NZ tho.

Hi Scott, I’m a handyman and do many things, cabinet making is one of them, I bought a set of Toughbuilt C700 sawhorses, 2 length of 90 x 45 x 2400mm pine and a 1200 x 2400 x 19mm plywood and it’s just amazing how quick I can set it up. I’d like to send you some photos but won’t allow me here

ILoveLSD13 He’s right though. It’s too big. About as long but half the depth. I keep a plywood sheet in the roof of my van, 2 ft by 6 ft, whatever the conversion is, and a couple plastic horses. For added strength, I’ll add a couple of 6 ft balusters underneath.
Ron Paulk's original bench was built in two pieces, each 24" x 96". I've found that holding down the width like that makes each half of the bench much more easily portaged, as well as usable by itself for many tasks involving lumber, trim, or just about anything besides full sheet goods. Fastcap altered the design, making it as a single piece, both shorter and much wider. This move to simplify cancelled one of the most important characteristics of Ron's original design IMO.

Never figured out why you would need such an awkward table on a jobsite. Useful for a workshop yeah but it doesnt look portable to me. Just use stools, couple of sticks amd one sheet of the sheetgoods your using. KISS. Anyway, up tp you if you wanna lug stuff like that around. Incidentally, do you know of those clamps would fit the dewalt track saw? Dewalt ones are ratger expensive. Thanks

I made my bench 1200x1200mm works for most jobs
I just did the Paulk plywood stands in the plans and they hold up to an immense amount of weight. Those legs are sorta janky and not up to the task. ☹️
Also cut the bench down the middle and make a few new side pieces. Them you can put them together with a few nuts and bolts or just use one side. I did that with the 4'x8' version. Way easier to move around two pieces.
Rebuild your bench making it two joinable lengthwise halves. Half the weight and size and full when needed. That's what I did using the Paulo design.

Hi Scott I love your videos they are very interesting and informative. Was looking for some advice I want to get a saw that I can cut sheets down on but don't know weather to get a track saw or table saw. Was also wondering if a track saw is able to do small rips on wood like a table saw would.

Mark Reid handling 2.4 x 1.2 sheets can be awkward, sounds like you would be better with a track saw, I think a table saw is better for ripping length of timber not sheets so much

Why not split your existing workbench into two parts with something like dominoes helping to align them when assembling and some screw-on-devices (sorry, don't know a better word for it) to fix them together.
