  • Dr. Mark Windham spoke with us during our monthly Rose Geeks Zoom meeting about Rose Rosette Disease (RRD). In this video you will learn about RRD identification, treatment, and how to help fight the disease.
    Dr. Mark Windham is an authority on diseases of ornamental plants. Currently the majority of his research is focused on Rose Rosette Disease, the most destructive ornamental disease in the U.S. However, Dr. Windham is also involved in research on plant health issues with hydrangea and flowering dogwood. Specific areas of current research are:
    • Virus and eriophyid mite resistance in Rosa sp.
    • Ecology of eriophyid mites associated with Rosa sp.
    • Cultural and chemical controls for Rose Rosette Disease
    • Cercospora leaf spot management in cultivated roses
    • Powdery mildew resistance in flowering dogwood
    • Reintroduction of dogwoods as a nursery crop in the Deep South
    • Resistance to fungal foliar diseases in hydrangea

    Wow, many thanks to Dr. Windham for such beautiful work and dedication studying a solution that afflicts this worldwide beloved and long cultivated flowering plant, but mostly thank you for dedicating your life work and expertise to saving beautiful species, and potentially so many other plants.
    I’m a Master Gardner in the state of California, and I appreciate people like you that think and act on behalf of this beautiful planet we live, and its species that makes it beautiful.

    Amazing and valuable information. I lived in Allentown PA many years ago and in 2019 the city rose garden lost over 700 roses because of RRD, it was so hard on the community; they cleaned everything and ordered more roses. We hope that this disease can be under control in few years. I'm always worried on new growth of new bare root roses, always checking. Thanks again Kim and Dr Windham, people need this information, we need to talk more about it.

    I am new to roses this year. They have been a lot of work. I recently suspected that there was something going on with them and now know that it is rose rosette disease. So disappointing. This presentation was awesome. Many thanks to Dr Mark Windham. I removed my beloved Julia Child rose today but suspect that I will be removing the others that I bought and planted in the spring. Makes me wonder about how they were infected but they were all bought in Knoxville, TN.

    This was excellent and I also downloaded the field resistance to rdd article within the national library of medicine. This professor was an excellent presenter in terms of how he presented technical information to lay people. The q and a reiteration of salient points was excellent! It makes me sad how we are losing so many facets of the brilliant diamond that was higher education/academia.

      I agree 100%. He is a great lose. In addition to his ability to teach, he is a hoot. :)

    A few years ago I purchased a rose with active rose rosette at a large box store chain. I just thought it was new growth at first but realized something was up pretty quickly. I doused that thing in sulfur for a few weeks and this temporarily made a huge difference. Once I stopped treating though, it came back within a few weeks. I started describing the symptoms online and learned what it was. Thankfully I pulled it out and got rid of it. At that time I didn't have too many roses in that particular flower bed. Something really has to be done to get some more research done though, because the devastation to a rose garden would be horrendous.
    I would love to hear some thoughts on beneficial insects such as mite predators.

      @@TheRoseGeek Arbico Organics sells mite predators which I was planning on purchasing anyway. However I do not know if they specifically help with this particular mite as there is no research on this.

    Great info. Still, as someone who loves their roses AND chickens I probably could've done without the chicken keeping sleight at the end there 😥...
    Anyways, hopefully science will be able to derive an inoculum for this. It is horribly devastating. And no, big box chain stores do NOT care. Until it really hits them in the wallet a far as they're concerned it's not their problem, which in and of itself is a huge part of the problem.

    Thankyou so much for this excellent presentation. As a home gardener I had never seen this disease in my garden until last year. I tried to convince my husband (a non-gardener) that our three double knockout roses needed to be removed, but he said no because they were still blooming and looked fine to him. I cut them way back in late winter and they came back stronger than ever but with the same problem. With your video I now have proof as all three bushes are exhibiting the rose rosette condition again this year.

    This was a wonderful presentation. Thank you Kimberly and Mark Windham! I learned so much and have shared your video with many of my rose friends. I may have missed it in the description, but can you share the go fund me site for the RRD research or where I may donate to this ongoing research? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have RRD resistant roses! I have notified the management of several fast food businesses that have RRD on all their landscape roses. Fortunately I live in a rural area surrounded by forests, but always worry that my neighbors may bring it to their gardens. I am so glad I found your YT channel!

    I reported infected rose plantings in my city to our extension office and was told that they don't care. Given the devastation of this disease and how contagious it is, I was appalled. Ideas on next steps?

    I think I have an outbreak of this virus in my David Austin rose bed. Seemed to appear suddenly as I do an aphid patrol every morning and the leaf problems seemed to appear overnight. Just mottling at the moment, so far no actual mosaic patterns. Can you recommend a 'miteicide' ?

    • @roontunes
      @roontunes Před 2 lety

      Thanks fir the quick reply. I sent photos to DA and they assured me that it looked more like overspray from 'something' but definitely not Rose Mosaic. I thought Rose Rosette was just another common name for RMD 😲
      I've been doing a morning aphid patrol with very dilute dishwasher solution and now I look at the mottling pattern it's likely my spray got zapped by bursts of sunshine . Unusual in my 'hood' 😩 I'm in soggy Ireland. So fingers crossed 🤞. But your video is important as there are so many people on CZcams suggesting RMV is harmless and cannot be passed from plant to plant or by insects 😵

    • @roontunes
      @roontunes Před 2 lety

      And by the way, Peter Beales roses in the U.K. actually publish this statement on their website.
      ' As a rose with a virus is not contagious the best way to deal with it is simply to ignore the fact that it has it and enjoy it for what it is.

      @roontunes Před 2 lety

      Well it wouldn't be good business sense to tell folks they had to rip out their roses if they'd bought diseased plants because the supplier might be liable for replacements 😉
      Better. Usiness sense to tell the customer it's nothing to worry about. Don't think I'll be ordering any roses from them anytime soon.
