Uggh. Diseased plants in the garden is so disheartening! I feel your pain, I have dealt with this in my garden and clients gardens. The great thing is you can immediately plant something else in its place to ensure the gap is filled. Best of luck!

Sorry about your loss to rose rosette disease. Diseased plants are frustrating; it feels like there’s something that could have been done to prevent the problem. There probably isn’t though. I think your wait and see approach is a good idea. We all have to be good students of our gardens. Just so you know, your garden is quite lovely. I so enjoy your videos.

So you had this problem, glad you found it! I carry alcohol based wet wipes in my pruning box and whipe the pruners clean after every rose I prune. After seeing this video, I will also be much more vigilant. Thank you.

Gardening can certainly be frustrating sometimes but we learn to roll with the punches when we are dealt a devastating blow. You are handling this with such grace. The Blue Shadow Fothergilla is a beautiful shrub, icy blue now but just wait until the fall display! And next spring, the fragrant bottlebrush blossoms will add much to the texture in your garden. I’d say it’s a keeper!

Hi Matthew! I'm sorry to hear that you had rose rosette, but glad that it was on a rose that you weren't particularly happy with. I hope the rest of your roses will be ok. I really like the Blue Shadow Fothergilla in that spot. As someone else commented, maybe under plant with mahogany monster heuchera, or something similar for the "red" color. That way you get both of the colors you want there. Thank you so much for sharing!

Oh no!! I am so sorry you may have RRD 😥😥 I am hoping you will get good news and it won't be 🤞🤞 my idea for a replacement in that spot would be maybe try a red coleus like newly noir or even the edge of night hardy hibiscus?? The shrub you have right now would look good too but I agree, that you should add something with red foliage 😊

  • @sunflowerstatelifestylellc

That's terrible espically towards the end of season, I had this happen to three of my roses because I didn't know what it was until it was too late. So I haven't planted roses since. Your garden is one of my absolute favorites, it's the hydrangeas for me 😍🥰

I admit, I haven't been the best about cleaning my pruners either. When i bring a new dahlia into my collection, im cautious and clean my pruners. But I never really considered it with my roses. Im definitely going to be more diligent about it now.

Thank you for informing us about the rose disease. A few years back another utuber also removed several roses from her garden for that same reason. Ah I’m sorry about losing your rose. Dang, I know the feeling. I lost a whole row of roses along the side of our old house. I suspected it was this disease but wasn’t really into gardening back then. (Working way too many hours away from house). The crazy neighbor across the street had diseased roses, think they were dead but she kept watering them during rain storms 🙃 Thank you for sharing this information because my town in Kansas is definitely on that map and all the surrounding towns. I’ll still plant roses though. I love how beautiful your garden looks and all the lovely choices to replace what is lost. Let’s hope all our new roses stay healthy. 😊

And I too grew to love roses because of a similar rose story when we moved here...inherited horrible roses that I removed. A few years later added At Last (a trial plant) then fell in love and planted a David Austin and now I want more! But I'll take your suggestion and not plant them next to each other 🙂

Oh no! I'm so sorry this has happened to your gorgeous roses! I thought only our roses here in North Texas were devastated by the horrible rose rosette disease. I am still a huge rose fan and have three David Austin roses at this home in pots. And some of my friends still have healthy ones in their gardens. But others have had it destroy their rose gardens. So far I have had roses almost three years here in pots with no disease, thank goodness! Our other home I had six David Austin roses in the ground with no issues. But since we moved to this home in another county of North Texas,, we were informed we better not plant any since the disease was so rampant here. But I'm a rebel and wanted to have those glorious David Austin roses again so I put them in pots. So far so good and am praying for your beautiful roses that it doesn't spread any further.

    Rosette disease is terrible news.
I have had some too. I returned to my Texas garden after visiting family in South Carolina to discover dying plants. In July we had only 2 days under 100, and no measurable rain. August has not been much better. My friend who watered for me while I was gone suggested that our alkaline soil was damaged by the alkaline water from the tap during our summer drought. Seems reasonable. Rain would help, but our forecasts are not promising
Has anyone else had problem and remediate it?

  • @boxwoodlaneflowers2972

I’m new to outdoor perennial hibiscus. I found out today that you can get hardy varieties that are good to overwinter outside in my zone 4b in Vermont. I got one today called Candy Crush. 4’ -5’ tall and full sun, perfect for our yard as we only have a handful of fruit trees along the border of our property.

So disheartening. When I bought my house there was a circle of old rosette-diseased Knockout roses which I promptly removed. Plus the previous owner had allowed invasive multiflora roses to run rampant in the wilder parts of the property plus in some of the beds. Rose rosette can spread from the multifloras to garden roses. I am working on removing those. I also understand that Knockout roses are particularly susceptible. I am very wary about introducing new roses. It's so frustrating!

Hey there. Rose Rosette…🫣 I recently ran across a very interesting thread on FB. A lady who professionally grows roses shared her spray recipe for her 800 roses. Now I haven’t had a chance to try it out but from the research I’ve done i think it’s one of the better ones I’ve heard of. Now I quote what she said: “I’ve been using this spray this way for more than two years. I received some roses from a big, bare root, rose grower that had RRD on them. I cut the diseased portion back almost to the base (as you did Matthew) and sprayed with the above. RRD has never returned or spread to any others.”
Than a couple days ago I saw another lady saying that she just cut the RRDed branches off and her rose survived.
After hearing your explanation of RRD I’m intrigued. I didn’t realize that it was an insect. I thought it was fungal.
Like I said no personal experience but I’d be intrigued to try it out if I ever have one with RRD. Now I’d probably take it a step further. Dig the rose out and pot it up. Isolate it so it for sure doesn’t spread then see what happens
Edit: Now I wonder if this recipe would work on your maple. Granted they were cutting the diseased parts off but maybe it’s worth a try 🤔

    • @adalineblythe9653
      @adalineblythe9653 Před rokem

      Organic Rose Spray Recipe:
In a two gallon sprayer mix the following:
      2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide
      2 tablespoons garlic extract
      2 tablespoons seaweed extract
      1 cup milk
How to make the Garlic extract.
      2 cups vegetable oil
      2 Tablespoons crushed garlic
      1 cinnamon stick.
Simmer for one hour and strain into amber bottles.
Now I asked her whether the garlic extract doesn’t separate from the water since - oil. I will edit this when she gets back. If it does separate I’d suggest using Castile soap or Dawn.
