    Isn't it fun to have a reference of how small things are when planted. It's like looking at baby pictures!
    I planted 10 bareroot strawberries last week and made everyone come admire the few leaves that grew in a couple days. Only other gardeners know how exciting that is!!

    Until watching you plan out a flowerbed, Ive never really planned what I wanted or how I wanted my beds to look. I extended one of my beds this year so I can begin to make them look like it has some cohesiveness. Thank you Matthew. You have quite an eye for a beautiful garden.

    I so admire all the brain space you have to track and process your work AND this huge yard with all these plants. I had about 23 plants piled up this spring that I had to get into the ground and I nearly had a meltdown over it. I felt so pressured. "Please don't die while waiting in your pots! I'm working as fast as I can!" I just bought 3 clearance Silver Gumdrop Heuchera. They looked rough (and dry), but those plants are so hardy. Fingers crossed on those! Love seeing your progress and tagging along to see what is waking up this spring.

    Greetings from Ireland, Great job, the perennials will grow and spread in no time. I'm gardening Twenty years and lucky enough when I started my wife bought me a book on organic gardening. I mulch the garden beds with homemade compost in February and fertilise the flowers with a hand full of organic fish blood and bone meal around each plant once in March and that's the only time they get fertiliser. Fish blood and bone meal costs forty euro for twenty kilos which is not to bad.

Proven Winners is the absolutely best choice for many plants. I have chartreuse on the loose in for six weeks now. Spreading out beautifully with great color on the flower and leaves. Fast spreader. Have 15 serendipity allium, now two years old, with lots of flowers, in the front of a bed, looking gorgeous. Nothing eats them! You are going to have a lot of beautiful growth to look forward to.

  • @Edu_Kate
    @Edu_Kate Před 2 měsíci +4

    I did not know that's how bare-root plants were processed. Very interesting.
    Last Thursday, my Great Garden Plants order arrived and I'm rather pleased by my progress. The scale is nowhere close to yours, but my sandy soil needs lots of conditioning before I can plant. Some of the plants are same as yours, 'Serendipity' Allium (yes, I smelled onion when I teased the roots) and geum in the rose variety will bloom soon.
    You've inspired me to replace 'Rainbow Marcella' euphorbia that didn't survive with the yellow nepeta which loves my growing conditions.
    I enjoy "shopping" in my own garden. I plan to transplant a coralberry that hasn't performed as well as the others that receive more sun. Love that gorgeous plant.
    I need to dig up a mature peony that's interspersed with either an invasive grass or tradescantia. I realize the ideal time to do that is late summer/early fall. It needs to be done.
    I'd given up on growing heuchera in my Minneapolis garden, but maybe my problem was planting non-branded varieties. I'll look for PW ones.
    An order placed in March is due to arrive this week. I'd forgotten my order. Culver's root was on my wish list and I see it's in this order...I just don't know if it's white or lavender. Important to know so I can plant my 'Ultraviolet' tall phlox. 🥴
    BTW, the way you hoisted your drill with auger tells me you have a lot of upper-body strength. I ordered the cement mixer drill and Jenny's Power Planter auger and wonder how I'll be able to transport that heavy equipment. I'm only 67, but learning my body thinks it's 76.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 2 měsíci +3

      If you have ordered the Dewalt DCD130B (labeled as a cement mixer), that is overkill depending on what size auger you have. For the standard size auger like I used in the video (planting annuals or small perennials), you'll likely want a smaller drill. I have a Dewalt DCD996B that's dedicated to the smaller augers I have. It's much lighter. You have to have a large drill, like the Dewalt DCD130B (which I also have), for the very large augers and shrubs. It is very heavy and requires a lot of strength to carry it and is difficult to use depending on your soil. I probably would not recommend it depending on your strength. The risk of breaking your wrist is real and I even injured my wrist with the smaller drill before years ago.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@Edu_Kate it’ll definitely work. But it’s a bigger drill than is needed for the task and you may find it cumbersome and too heavy.

    Regarding your weeds in the mulch. I received a chip drop around the same time as you did last fall. It was full of a soft wood maple we in Canada call Manitoba Maple. Very invasive and prolific! It could have been something like that in your chip drop as well 😔 I hope not. 💖

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 2 měsíci +1

      That mulch wasn't from a chip drop. This was actual aged triple-processed mulch, which is why I think it may have just been late season issues where it had been sitting for a while and had gathered some weed seeds. The good news is I started pulling them yesterday and they are coming up super easily.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 2 měsíci +5

      Other than those few others I tried that didn't survive one year or barely survived, I've only grown PW varieties that are new or relatively newer to the market, so I've not had experience with any of them beyond 4 years. It could just be your climate, soil conditions, when they were planted, or the specific variety. For instance, here, at least at the last home, I could not grow lupines. I love them, but they were an annual for me (sometimes not living the whole season). Someone else mentioned in a comment that heuchera don't like clay soil, but I had so many thrive in the clay soil of my last home. I'd recommend you give Heucherella a chance and if you like red, Red Rover has been an excellent variety for me.
