  • Preparing the Garden for a Tour - In this video we do some maintenance to get the garden ready for the open house in June. It usually takes about a month for the plants to grow out a bit after being pruned so it should be the perfect timing.

Jim, I've learned so much from your videos over the years, but I think the thing I appreciate most is that you've sort of made me feel like it's ok to drop my plant clippings directly in the garden as mulch. Saves so many trips to the compost pile.

Lol, I do that a lot, putting the clippings at the root..lol

Yay yay yay! A Hort Tube with Jim Putnam video makes the day golden.
Sounds kind of silly, but, 'tis true!

Jim, a QUESTION for you... Could you please give some tips on sharpening gardening tools - shears, secateurs etc. I've tried a couple of methods but never am able to get a good sharp edge. A demonstration on how you do it would be most appreciated!

Your walkabout and explanation/rationale always gives me inspiration to get out and work in my own garden. We've given many tours of our own garden. It's a great push to spruce up now and then! Love your videos.

Jim and Steph I had an idea for your tour day and it may sound silly. Y’all should film visitors who are there standing in front of Golden Falls weeping redbud, saying “welcome to HortTube this is Jim Putnam.” That would be awesome! Or just saying “welcome to HortTube.”

Wow. That opening shot is such a great example of what can be achieved with texture and foliage color alone. It’s amazing how far your garden has come in such a short time. I look forward to seeing what’s next.

So glad to know I am not the only one who just tucks some of the cuttings back under the shrubs haha.

We did a major pruning of overgrown Burford Holly on our foundation. They must have been infested and it's moved to the Rose of Sharon. The bottom of every leaf has a white fuzzy critter, or several. The hummingbirds love the Hibiscus so I can't treat systemically. Revolting development!
My Asclepias and one group of Lavender blooming with some Daylilly. Coreopsis verticilla about to open.

Great video, Just finding you. It was so awesome to see your golden falls redbud (and your trimming of it) . I just planted one. I'm in zone 9 in northern CA but on coast so we dont get the heat that many zone 9's do. It was so fun to see what it'll look like a bit more grown up. I also see you're in NC? NC is an area I'm potentially interested in for retirement, but so many neighborhoods (of course many are newer) seem devoid of gardens. Many of the backyards are just grass. Know it's gets hot but hoping it's still conducive to planting a nice garden (Im looking in coastal areas so should be a bit cooler). Obviously yours is gorgeous! I'd love to see a video of your hostas. Just ripped out a bunch of area to create new gardens and have shade space I need to fill!

I'm telling ya Jim, its getting scary how everything is so early this year. even if you take your vitex out of the equation the natives are going crazy this year too! I got Rudbekia that are opening flowers 3 months early and my native sumac tree is budded up too its really strange

Wow. This year has been crazy warm. In Indy, we are usually about 4 weeks behind you in Raleigh. Now we're about even this year. Interestingly, my family in Raleigh is coming to indy to look at my garden and hang out exactly when you have your open house, lol. What a great year for gardens and plants!

We just did a hard prune on one third of our neighbor’s azaleas that were overhanging our driveway. Now we are building a dead hedge with the smaller and larger bits that do not fit the chipper. The azaleas look great limbed up- which also reveals the weeds which were hiding.

Thanks Jim and Stephany. 💐💚🙃 I’m trying to tree form a seven sons or temple of bloom shrub right now. It’s grow so wildly this spring so I’ve taken after it just yesterday. I’m hoping that I didn’t take too much off so we will see 🤞🏻💐💚🙃

We have bermuda grass, nutsedge in the garden beds, bindweed and some other weedy vine. Plus all the neighbor's tree seedlings popping up everywhere. Exhausting.

If you allowed that weeping redbud to touch the ground, would it root in? I have one in my yard and I keep it trimmed off the ground, but I was wondering if it would work to try to lay it on the dirt and a new tree.

Hi Jim, just subscribed to your channel last month or so and wish I had discovered you sooner! I learn so much! Question: What is the ground over growing in your neighbor’s yard? It looks nice, but wondering if it creeps into your yard and how much work you have to do to prevent that from happening. Thanks for all you and Stephanie do for the gardening community 😊

Jim, for the open house are you going to set up a HortTube merch table? Also, any chance you might allow cuttings to be made available? My wife and I are planning to drive up from Charlotte for the day. What time will you allow visitors?

Shouldn’t really start seeds with ocean forest as it has a lot of fertilizer in it. Better to use seed starter mix or sifted potting soil
