He was an iconic figure in Perry Mason . The king of cool . His private detective part was perfect. From his hip attire, cool cars and an eye for the beautiful ladies. He was made for the style of the late 50’s and early 60’s. Never gets old watching him.
Believe he drove a 1957 Ford T Bird Thunderbird convertible ❤😎👍
@@marylawson6060 he had a corvette and a couple different thunderbirds …..sweeeeeet !!!
@@benniebarrow348 Yes and Perry Mason drove a 57 Ford Fairlane then a Cadillac and finally Lincoln Towncar. I had a 57 Ford Fairlane 500 convertible back in day. Sweet. Found one for $34,000 😎👍
Love the Thunderbirds, and he always had the latest model so he drove several. Of course Perry always drove a Lincoln. Clearly Ford Motor Company must have had a hand in producing that series or paid for product placement. I have a 1960 Thunderbird and had a 1961 at one point, great cars in my extremely biased opinion.
A King of Cool, Like S.M. You Know.
As a child I loved him in Perry Mason. No other actor who tried to fil his shoes as Paul Drake ever came close to him.
Us too! Thank you for bringing back memories. Which episode of Perry Mason appealed to you the most?
Were there other actors who acted as Paul Drake or filled in for him when he was unable to make a shoot?
@@Au60schild yes there were. The actor was not another Paul but whoever he was he took over the same kind of role in Perry Masons life. Don't know his character name or who the actor was. I just remember he had curly hair 😂
WILLIAM KATT AS PAUL DRAKE JR IN THE PERRY MASON MOVIES. HIS MOTHER WAS BARBARA HALE.
He also played the lead role in the TV series The Greatest American Hero.@@frankcarpenter4722
William Hopper had a definite likeability factor and brought warmth to his characters.
Beautiful words, thank you for your message for William. In your opinion, what is his finest role?
@@FactsVerse Would have to say Paul Drake though he played a real nasty in 'Rebel Without a Cause'.
He was the son of well known actress Hedda Hopper 😊
@@FactsVerse I only know of 1 show he was in...PERRY MASON, OF COURSE ❤
Paul Drake...Perry Mason
He was great in "The Bad Seed". His mother's reputation hurt his career. He was a Navy Frogman, the precursors to Navy SEALs, and a genuine war hero. "Hiya, beautiful"
I loved hearing him say this.
He was humble and unpretentious. Qualities rare in Hollywood.
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and enjoy the rest of your evening!
Getting rare everywhere in this day & age unfortunately.
Many Blessings 🙏🇺🇸
His beautiful hair, and he always called “Della Street”, Beautiful! He was a trustworthy character. Love him in the show!
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
In comparison to many Hollywood celebrities of today, William Hopper was a great one! He was not only talented, handsome and patriotic enough to serve in the Navy during World War II even though he was from a wealthy family, but he was amazingly HUMBLE too. Modern entertainers could learn some lessons from past actors like William Hopper! Thanks for telling us his story. 👍👍👍
I still watch Perry Mason every night. Hopper added extra class with the other principle cast members! Paul Drake had that little knock on Perry's side door, announcing him before coming in. Perry, Della, and Paul always seemed to share little private jokes between the three of them, always with a twinkle in their eyes. ❤
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show and Paul. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Loved him in Perry Mason. Seemed like a gentle giant
Us too! Thanks for bringing back memories. Which episode is the most memorable for you?
This was really interesting and well done. That William Hopper was an UDT guy for the OSS tells you what kind of a tough guy he was in real life. UDT is the forerunner of the Navy Seals and of course the OSS is the CIA. William Hopper was a good actor and served our country so it's good to remember him with tributes like this
Very cool indeed!
Not to mention, incredibly handsome! He surely set my preteen heart a flutter!
A really fine actor and will always be remembered as Paul Drake. Gone to soon.
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
a tremendous asset to some of us in the 1950"s who watched him play Paul Drake in Perry Mason - he had a very positive impact as to how an adult male should conduct himself - a role model that is today sadly absent.
Mr. Cool!
Loved him as Paul Drake !
Us too! Thanks for bringing back memories. Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
at 74 years old, I just started watching Perry Mason, he did an outstanding job as Paul Drake, really brought that character to life, also great to know of his stellar military career.
About 6 months ago I read an article about him that had all these same facts in it, it's probably where the creator's of this video got their information from, they even used the same photo of the tattooed UDT guy that's not him in the article I'd read so I'd lay odds they simply ripped that article for their video, I've found a lot of these high volume video creator's doing the same thing, not long ago Dark Skies did a video on an American unit of the USAAF that at the end of the war was task with gathering up as much as much Luftwaffe tech as it could, curious about them I Googled the unit and found an article on them from the US Air Force's historical department and the video I'd just watched that was less than 2 hours old was taken word for word from the Air Force's article that'd been posted online 3 years before.
The content creator's for these high volume video channels apparently surf around the internet looking for things they know would interest their subscriber base and use them to create their video's.
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show and William. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Well said. They just make things up too. One of the worst things youtube has done is put a well known actot on a picture of dead stars, and they aren't dead.
Were you living in a foreign country during the airing of Perry Mason?
no, born and raised calif, just never got into it back then.@@johna.4334
This was fascinating, I knew nothing about William Hopper other than he was the son of a famous woman. Respect for his service during WWII! He was one of my favorites in "Perry Mason", in part because he always drove the latest Thunderbird 😻. I bought my first classic T-Bird while in the Navy around 1990 in part after seeing Paul Drake driving them. The chemistry between Hopper, Burr, and Hale is what makes the old "Perry Mason" series so enjoyable.
The complete facts about his military service are very impressive. UDT ops were very high risk, both from the enemy and the sea itself. They were what later morphed into the Navy Seals. His formerly deep blonde hair turned white during the war, a result of the stress and trauma of the dangers he routinely faced. (It was long disputed whether stress could turn someone's hair white, but recent research has conclusively verified that it can happen.)
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
@@FactsVerse Have had the complete series on DVD for years and have seen every uncut episode many, many times. Too many great ones to have a single favorite.
A genuine badass!
He will always be remembered as 'Paul Drake' from Perry Mason. He played the role very well.
We definitely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
In addition to its cast, the "Perry Mason" series had some of the best guest actors in the industry.
I was saddened when I heard of his passing back in 1970.....he and Barbara Hale were as equally iconic in their roles as Paul Drake and Della Street respectively as Raymond Burr was as Perry Mason -- the show wouldn't have been the same without them.
Perfect as Paul Drake, he came across as a genuine person with integrity and high standards. He was always a gentleman, similar to how he may have been in 'real life." A pleasure to watch an actor, yes, he really shone as a member of an extraordinary team which presented a brilliant crime and mystery series, certainly unequalled at that time and completely unequalled to the drivel and slime offered by writers and actors alike in 2023. The camera work was also phenomenal - creative ,thoughtful AND actually an important art of the successful series. I'm honoured to have grown up with this quality of TV. Not only has intellect and education been reduced to a very watery lemonade, worthy of being spit out after the first taste, but it truly seems current youth, their parents and their offspring are DE-evolving, alive only as competition to an ant's intellect. Could this be someone's or some group's intentional plan?Is the world becoming TOO physically crowded? Why are we accepting such low standards in entertainment or even education???!?!?!?!?!
I'm completely with you.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. Which episode appealed to you the most?
You didn't mention how handsome!! Today's younger actor's can't hold a candle to him. Prefer actors of that era .
My sentiments actually..Loved Perry Mason.
Absolutely, as well!!!! AND Della AND EVERY other character.................❤❤❤❤❤@@glennvieregge934
I read his hair turn white because of the stress of dealing with underwater demolition tasks. That hair and those light colored suits...made his look suave and cool.
Interesting, thank you so much for sharing this info about William! In your opinion, what is his finest role?
@@FactsVerse 20,000 Years To Earth was interesting because he was the lead. Otherwise, Perry Mason.

Actually he died 53 years ago. and the cause of death and date of his death was
February 14, 1970, after suffering a stroke. He died of a heart attack three weeks later, on March 6, at age 55
And then take the way the fact that he was a really good movie star..❤

@@FactsVerse Hi. I'm new to Facts Verse. Have you surveyed the Thin Man movies? Also, I'm interested in the life and mysterious death of Dag Hammarskjold. Thanks for asking!
As Paul Drake on Perry Mason, William Hopper always had this strength of character, a feeling of you could trust this man to do what was right. As a child, this made me love Drake's character as strong and supportive, but above all, kind.
Beautiful words, thank you for your message for Paul. We're moved. Which episode of Perry Mason appealed to you the most?
Loved him in the Perry Mason show. He added a lot. That fact that his was in the UDT and a medal winner at that says a LOT about him.

William Hopper was the quintessential character actor!

But could have easily been a leading man. Seems maybe his mother had something to do with it. She had a lot of enemies.
William Hopper was from my father's generation. I haven't seen him in anything but the Perry Mason show, which I still watch occasionally in the reruns. I always thought he was a likeable character in that show. I had no idea that he died so young. I have always been fascinated that Hedda Hopper was his mother.
This recap on his life was very informative and I enjoyed learning more about William Hopper. Thanks for showing this video.
He was a heavy cigarette smoker which can be seen in numerous scenes on Perry Mason. This addiction may have contributed to his untimely and early death.
Him and millions of other tobacco assisted fatalities.
Most people who 🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬seem to die in their 50s & 60s
William Talman, DA Hamilton Burger, was another heavy smoker who lost his life through his addiction. Terminally ill he appeared on anti smoking public information films on US tv telling people to stop.
@@paulweir5031 I believe his anti-smoking video was one of very first to be done by a celebrity. Yul Brenner followed this up with his own anti-smoking message after he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
@@paulweir5031 I remember seeing both of those on TV at the time.
I wish I saw just one page of notes Detective Paul Drake scribbled down for Perry mason. William Hopper was a true Gem!
.
*I LOVED HIM IN ALL OF HIS ROLES.*
*HE ALWAYS GOT YOUR ATTENTION, SEEMINGLY WITHOUT EVEN TRYING.*
I always enjoy anything that the late William Hopper is in. Whether the part is large or small it matters not for he always seem to shine brightly. Though he was indeed a very fine dramatic actor, William Hopper as Paul Drake on Perry Mason, often had a tendency to bring a touch of lightheartedness to a scene because his character could make us laugh and smile. He brought a great balance to that series that was so wonderful. The chemistry between Mr. Hopper and the other cast members was easily seen. Thank you for remembering him.
As a teen back in the 1050's, I was poor and most of what I wore were 'hand me downs' or from thrift stores. I always admired how William Hopper dressed on the show.
RIP MR HOOPER you have been not forgotten. I loved your movies and perry mason.
Thank you so much for your beautiful message for William. We love him. Be safe and enjoy the rest of your evening ❣❣
I'm a true Perry Mason fan, I think William always played every role with sincerity and style. Not to mention how handsome he was.
As a kid watching the Perry Mason series a lot. I loved that show for some reason. I always saw William Hopper as a hero and I was drawn to him in the show because the role he played meant he shared my first name. I didn't know of any other actor at that time who had the first name Paul in a show. I thought that was so cool. Absolutely one of the greats in my opinion.
I watched Perry Mason first run back in the 50s and 60s and have been watching it again on ME TV recently. I had forgotten how big a roll Hopper had as Paul Drake. The original series must have been shot on 35mm film, at least the later seasons. The image sharpness is fully up to modern TV standards.
He respected his craft. He was gracious and patient with younger actors. He never sought the spotlight or was on the scene at sleazy Hollywood "smooze" parties. He avoided using family connections to get roles and he was a GENUINE war hero. And he died at 55? What a loss!
We watch him in Perry Mason reruns every night on FETV.
In the episode which comes to mind he goes undercover as a truck driver. A fine actor, had a real presence and quiet authority.
Thanks
Perry Mason & 20 Million Miles to Earth are my favorite but a great actor all around R.I.P. in Heaven.

William Hopper was a heavy smoker.
@@GeminiladyJackson-xq6hc Believe Perry Mason started in 1957 and everyone smoked back then. Movies from the 30s show this. Now it's pot or heroin.
His hair was always perfect!
I've seen all the films you mentioned he was in. I was wonderful in The Bad Seed and Rebel Without a Cause. But, my favorite is Paul Drake. Perry Mason always had the best actors, beautiful sets, and costumes. It's my favorite.
He made Paul Drake immortal, just as Burr did for Perry Mason .
1957 was a good year for Hopper. He starred in two sci-fi movies - and they were better for his performance - and he started his signature role of Paul Drake.
And he was Mr. Cool in that same way George Clooney would be decades later.

William Hopper's character on Perry Mason seemed to complete the show to me. He was needed not only to be an investigator, but for comic relief also. He was incredibly attractive. This was a man that definitely got more handsome as he got older! May he forever rest in peace.

so very handsome & seemingly a great personality
During the time Perry Mason was originally aired, my late father controlled our one TV, it was usually tuned to "horse operas". Fast forward 50 years and I along with my friend from Jersey, UK watch Perry Mason every morning. We wait for the coda, we call it "Flummoxed Paul", where Perry or Della explain a particular case point to Paul. His mannerisms and facial expressions speak volumes. Thanks. Narragansett Bay
It is a shame that Mr Hoppers’ generation and earlier generations did not realize that regular smoking caused premature strokes and heart attacks by narrowing these vital arteries

I loved him as Paul Drake and he was classy and handsome
After his Navy service, he worked in the Central Valley selling used cars. He was eventually asked to return to acting, and read for the lead in 'Perry Mason' -- Burr won it, but they still wanted him for Paul Drake.

The wedding photo you had was with Gail Patrick Jackson the producer of Perry Mason in a movie they were in together. He was cast perfectly as Paul Drake. From what I read, he had a love / hate relationship with acting retiring relatively young. He also passed on way too soon.
