The truth about the life of the great actor Burt Lancaster

- Burt Lancaster was an American actor and producer. Initially known for playing tough guys with a tender heart, over his 45-year career in films and television, he achieved success by taking on more complex and challenging roles.
He was a four-time Academy Award nominee for Best Actor and also received two BAFTA Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. The American Film Institute ranked Lancaster 19th among the greatest male stars of classic Hollywood cinema.
After the successful film "From Here to Eternity," Burt gained high popularity in Hollywood. The actor had a athletic physique, which made him sought after for underwear modeling.
He was charismatic. Every role he ever played he dominated the scene. A true original. Just loved him. One of the greats.
Burt was not a Fudge Packer. He wasn’t a Fudge Packee either.
I didnt say he was.@@tommytwogloves16
❤❤❤❤❤
Even his small role in "Field of Dreams" was really well played. Outstanding actor.
Loved his performance in "The Birdman of Alcatraz". He was perfect for the part.
THAT MOVIE WAS HOLLYWOOD BALONEY.
_Seven Days in May_ is also great, also directed by John Frankenheimer.
One of my favorite Frankenheimer movies is Seconds w/Rock Hudson. Hudson said it was one of his favorite roles. @@GordonCaledonia
@@rufust.firefly4890 Yeah, that's a really disturbing film! Brilliantly made, though. Frankenheimer was great, but the Kennedy murders made him so depressed. He made good films later on, but his best films are his early ones.
My Fav although loved his Pirate Movies when I was a Kid JD not a Patch on BL
His role in the WW2 movie TRAIN is my favorite. I still watch it on DVD today. Very physical actor. All his movies were fantastic. Best actor of his time imho.
Its also accurate technically ie how he goes about fixing / recasting the bearing for that loco ...
great movie
The Train is my all time Favourite movie too. I watch it all the time.
Yes Train my favourite
Black and white film made it more gritty
@@richardkell4888 He was 50 in that and he did all his own stunts.
His portrayal of " Jim Thorpe,All American," was outstanding!
YES!!
One of my favorite actors of all time.
He was good in the professional s and Vera cruz
Huge actor. So gifted. He made 7 movies with kirk douglas too. My favourite was tough guys! 1997. The swimmer was amazing. He had such deoth and range. Totally captivating presence.
The Swimmer is an excellent movie!
As an older white, heterosexual male, I could not care less what consenting adults choose to do in the privacy of their own homes. It is literally nobodys business but their own. My only opinion of Burt Lancaster is that he was a truly unique, wonderfully gifted artist. I have enjoyed his films throughout my life.
Agree, but I really admire Tab Hunter for talking honestly about his life. His autobiography is amazing. Pretty sure many of the group were gay/bisexual. Shows rhe power of the media and Hollywood even back then.
Burt Lancaster is by far my favorite actor. He had stunning looks and lots of charisma. He put his all into every movie he made and was the star of a long list of great movies.😍🤩❤💖
Yea Burt was a real charmer
The Train one of the best films ever,I also loved Apache ! 👍
His performance in The Swimmer based on a Cheevers story was unforgettable and haunting. Usually i was not impressed with his screen charisma, but he embodied this part.
Great surreal movie that also had Joan Rivers. Quintessential northeast U.S. suburbs.
He was very good in Atlantic city,
And a fantastic short story too by John Cheever.
One of my all time favorite films for many reasons. The story itself is deep and meaningful and it is a 1960's period piece that takes you back in time. Smoke one and you'll see what I mean.
Sweet Smell of Success! Burt and Tony Curtis. “Match me Sidney.” “Not right now JJ.” 😅😅😅Wasn’t rated as high as some of his work, but one of my favorites.
Burt's performance in 'Sweet smell of success,' was unforgettable. The verbal interplay with Tony Curtis, is a benchmark in film noir.
I liked him and Curtis in that film. He was cold and calculating.
Both men brilliant
He was great in “The Swimmer”
@maydom04 Yes a surreal and fascinating film.
"Flame me, Sidney."
I loved him! We went to the same pharmacy and he would always tell me an off colored joke. He was so charismatic, funny and very tall. He must have been forty years older than me at the time. Wish I could meet him again.
Wow!
Nice memory
You shall!
Was this in Los Angeles?
Have the privilege of visiting his memorial plaque in Westwood village , as he once said in The swimmer I am a unique and Nobel human being
The truth in the life of Burt Lancaster is that he was a giant of the screen, one of the greatest, at the same level with John Wayne, Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Robert Taylor, Alan Ladd, Robert Mitchum, Jeff Chandler, Charlton Heston, Frank Sinatra, unforgetable movie stars of the best years of the movies. Thanks be to God for all the joy they gave us.
John Wayne couldn’t act!
@@CashelOConnolly he seemed good to me..Watch the quiet man.
You're mixing and matching different fruits. Jeff Chandler and John Wayne? Alan Ladd and Clark Gable? Not even the same species.
James Ellroy had Lancaster operating a private torture chamber. I hope that's what this video confirms. Lancaster had a couple of gimmicks as an actor, on par with the Richard Burton shriek. You coukd plot the voice intonations on a graph. He portrayed sanctimony better than anyone, in movies and in real life, and he was a great JJ - otherwise meh+. Athletic, gays lived him.
His "card carrying member of the ACLU" commercials irritate me 36 years later.

The truth about J.Edgar Hoover’s sexual depravity would make a great episode of this series. How about it ?
Do you really want to know? A lot of this guess who was really gay stuff... Do we need them to have been?
@@therespectedlex9794 I think you are missing the point. Hoover used his agency to spy on the private lives of public people. Shouldn’t the focus be on him now , not them ? He should be publicly reviled and the FBI building be named after someone else. Not that freak.
@@therespectedlex9794 The question wasn't directed to you.
@allan9603 It's a general discussion you, pedantic fool. Why are you answering for someone else, as if that's strictly polite either.
His cocktail dress is in the FBI Museum.
I liked Burt Lancaster at the peak of his manhood in his 50s. He was so handwome and manly!
When asked if has ever identified with any of his roles he replied “ never “ that’s why he was one of the greatest actors ever . We should never confuse the artist with their work or fiction with reality .
IN 1957 I WAS WORKING IN A GROCERY STORE IN NORTH LAKE TAHOE AND THE OWNER TOLD ME TO MOVE A CAR THAT WAS BLOCKING THE PARKING LOT,I WENT OUT AND SAW THE KEYS WERE IN THE IGNITION,I STATRED IT UP AND PARKED IT CORRECTLY AND AS I WAS GETTING OUT BURT LANCASTER CAME RUNNING UP AND HE WAS LIVID,SCREAMING AT ME FOR MOVING HIS CAR,I QUICKLY REALIZED THAT I WAS IN A BAD SPOT..I SAID MR LANCASTER YOU ARE THE BEST MALE ACTOR OF ALL TIME AS FAR AS I WAS CONCEARNED..I WASNT LYING,I REALLY LIKED HIM ON THE SCREEN..HIS DEMEANOR INSTANTLY CHANGED 180 DEGREES AND WE BECAME BEST FRIENDS FOR A MOMENT THAT ILL NEVER FORGET
Craw
That speaks to his character. He calmed down quickly and obviously was one of the good ones.
Today’s divas, male and female, would have made you an enemy.
In society today, because the key in the ignition, he would would never see his car again.
What have we come to? Theft, hatred, murder and mayhem.
Some actors are more temperamental than others! lol
I saw Burt Lancaster live during a screening of " From Here to Eternity" in 1983 at the Strand Theater in Santa Monica. Burt had concealed his identity and was simply listed as "with special guest" on the film schedule.
The audience was shocked to realize that the special guest was Burt himself.
What an awesome energy field the man had. While fielding questions from the audience, Burt was suddenly staring at me with those penetrating eyes. Too starstruck and timid, I didn't take his cue.
Only years later, did I read that Lancaster had participated in the March in Washington, walking side by side with Dr. King.
I was the only black man sitting in the audience that afternoon back in 1983.
I've had the same experience with a few stars. I denied myself as well
One of my favorites. Great actor, handsome and athletic. And he was that way until the end.
The first color movie that I ever saw was Burt Lancaster's "The Crimson Pirate" in 1952 at age 6! His powerful
performances continued through the 1950's, with his acrobatic stunts in "Vera Cruz" '54 & "Trapeze" in "'55", Lancaster
never failed to entertain, for over 40 years, even when he reached old age!/ p.s. I have always felt that, had the "Batman"
movie series, been made 30 years earlier, Burt, with his acrobatic background, would have been perfect for the role!
I’ve only ever seen him in Elmer Gantry, but by the end of it I knew I’d like him in any role.
Okay Coral was a standout saw it twice...I'm 88 y old and we ( of that age) saw movies every week.. Go Burt....
When on vacation in Mexico in 1977, I saw a double-header starring Burt Lancaster: Vera Cruz and Trapeze.
He loved opera which just made me love him more.
I didn't know that he loved opera. Thank you for the information.
Really. A jerk that loves opera. Great movies but I'm not the kind that puts up w jerks. How long do these movies require? The scene w Gina on the trapeze is the stuff of dreams.. She was a fireball herself. Wel maybe one movie, then again all those passionate scenes...nah not for me. But he was a great actor. And a jerk. Who loves opera.
The most BEAUTIFUL MAN, Great voice, and GREAT ATHLETIC BODY, as seen in the film the SWIMMER!
I adore Burt Lancaster..He was not only gorgeous, he was a brilliant actor, who was also a hugely talented trapeze artist.. A real 'triple threat' in Hollywood.! Speaking of huge, I've seen Burt's nudie pics and they were just sensational..He had the perfect physique and I can understand why he was one of the 'biggest' actors of the silver screen..I expect some people were very jealous of Burt because of his looks and incredible success..Even when he was in his 50s, he was still very hot..I saw him in 'The Swimmer' in my 20s..It was such a complex, dark, unforgettable movie..Burt was born to play Ned Merrill, the handsome, sensual, tragically flawed anti-hero..His performance was mesmerising and he sizzled in every scene, wearing brief swimming trunks..Those scenes have stayed with me..RIP beautiful Burt😍☮️💖😁
did guys spread there cheeks for him ? if you have seen his nudie pictures im sure fbi have incriminating stuff on him and plenty of actors and politician a its always gone on
do you think about him often ? then think about me thinking about you thinking about him 🔞🔞🔞🔞🔞🔞🚮🚮🚮🚮🚮😍😍😎
couldn’t agree more, “The Swimmer” is one incredible film, Burt is the hilight, but all the other actors do a great job, and I couldn’t believe how natural Joan Rivers was, quite a difference from her usual schtick.
He was one of the all time greats. Period
He had real magnetic presence on screen. He entertained and enthralled millions for many years. Final verdict ; a fine actor.. and I don't give a shit about posthumous bad publicity..
I loved him in the Western, Valdez is Coming. He was wonderful playing a Hispanic Lawman. He was totally convincing.
I loved that flick as well! Actually, a very unsung movie and an extremely interesting take on "Westerns!"
He was so beautiful and talented, i would choose not to believe the gossips.
Yes ..he was magnifent actor ...s beautiful man ..let him rest for goodness sake .. this is not relevant ..sick .
I saw him for the first time in The Flame And The Arrow when I was 13 - and fell in love!
A movie legend. We all have faults.. He's one of the Hollywood greats and always will be..
Local Hero and Atlantic City are two of my faves.
Burt is my favorite actor of all times.
Of all the Golden Age Actors, he was my favorite! The best looking, great acting and charisma!
Burt's wife Norma was on The Ways & Means Committee w/my mom @ Bellagio Road School. Attending his son's birthday party was an unforgettable childhood event @ their estate. Pinatas! Ponies! Prizes!
OH MY❗🎈🎉🎁🎂
My childhood hero.❤ Am not American , in fact originally from Middle East. He was so popular there in the 60s when i was growing up. we even played his roles as kids in the neighbourhood :) one of the greatest 😍
Jim Thorpe all American is my favorite Burt Lancaster film
See him in The Train and in The Professionals. Very good.
Love love The Train. Have to get over his accent in it, but he's great and the movie is stirring.
The Professionals was stupid. Telegraphed ending. A letdown. However, a funny part when CC told BL to go to hell.
His portrayal of Wyatt Earp was iconic in The Gunfight at the OK Corral.
Iconic?
Such a great movie, Kirk Douglas as Doc Holiday and John Ireland as Johnny Ringo, seen it at least 50 times
Why do we examine actors n actresses private lives?? We don't do that for bosses, programmers etc. .Acting is a field which people have jobs..let's leave the private lives private n have opinions on the JOB they do as
ACTORS n ACTRESSES!! LANCASTER was a GREAT ACTOR!!
Local Hero - sends himself up beautifully
How about him in Trapeze with Tony Curtis and Gina Lollabrigida
He was outstanding in Elmer Gantry. A well-deserved Oscar. 😊
The movies made him a legend.able to portray larger than life characters
He was a former acrobat of the high wire able to perform daring stunts!
I was born and raised in East Harlem and lived a few blocks from where Burt lived I later found out. From the very beginning I admired Burt’s acting abilities, from “Kiss the Blood off my hands” (the title grabbed me” to Valdez is coming, my favorite a true western in my opinion! Like someone said above “what someone does in the privacy of their home is their business “. So, whatever lifestyle he chose was his business and as far as I’m concerned he was a great actor. I guess most super talented people are “quirky” and difficult in their passion.
Like Kirk Douglas and Humphrey Bogart, he was an excellent movie producer.
He was good in Seven Days in May. A very appropriate movie in this day and age
I liked him as narrator in a documentary about the siege of Leningrad.
He was very good in “The Swimmer” (1968)
That's a good film. I haven't seen that for a while.
@@56postoffice
The short story is really good as well
One of my top 3 actors. He took over every role and movie.
Check "Seven Days in May" with Kirk Douglas. Burt L was terrific. He played the bad guy and did it very well.
He was amazing. Extremely talented. He was in a trapeze movie and I think he did actually do the stunts. He had great hair too.
After reading all the comments I realize how many great movies he appeared in. Besides his acting ability the big man oozed charisma.
Excellent in the WW2 film The Train playing a French Resistance member.
He is truly " OUT OF SIGHT " R.I.P. GOD BLESS AND 🙌 PRAYER'S!
I remember watching Burt Lancaster films as a kid with my father on a Saturday Afternoon. I really liked his presence and felt that he conveyed great empathy and passion.
My best friend was a foreign exchange student around 1979 and he spoke perfect English. We went to go watch "Go tell the Spartans" one time and he understood instantly when I explained America's crazy war culture and the Vietnam war. He was of course already familiar with Burt Lancaster from one million cowboy movies. He also translated the scenes that had French in that film for us with ease.
Zzzzz
@@sharonmontano4924 Well, dang. You are not wrong. After re-reading my boring comment I have no counter-argument. Hit me again and watch me delete it.
Loved his role in the Professionals
Great actor is all I know!
How can you not mention Seven Days in May? He was mesmeric in that film.
Good catch. Terrific movie, and like all else in that cinematic warning, Lancaster nailed it.
Why would he want to "present himself as a flawed person"?
I adored Burt when I was a teenager. there aren't many handsome actors around any more. I would love to see a story about Robert Taylor.
Robert Taylor was so handsome. "Camille" with Greta Garbo is one of my favourites.
Anyone remember " The Scalphunters"?
With Shelly Winters and Telly Savales and I can’t remember the rest of the cast but the last scene of them fighting in the mud where all the native Indians laughing
"PUT EM UP JOE BASS"...
There was often a slight comedy side to his films.
Never seen him in a bad one
@davidgray1165 yes it was a comedy Western shelly winters was a good looking women when she younger kirk Douglas also done a comedy Western cactus jack
Ossie davis
Went twice to the movie theater to see him in ATLANTIC CITY
Great movie, terrific performances from him and her.
"You should have seen the ocean back then. It was really something."
@@m.c.master4622 thanks for reminding me, I had forgotten about that line.
You forgot The Alcatraz last prisoner and Local Hero among many others…
Local hero was a brilliant film , a firm favourite of
Mine Nick from England
You missed his best film: Birdman From Alcatraz!!!
Not even.
Yes!
I loved him. I only have 2 of his films. From here to Eternity and
The Crimson pirate. However I have watched all of his films and really rate his acting prowess. ❤
As a youngster of only 68 I had watched many of his movies on TV. What was not to like? When I watched him as Doc. Graham in "Field of Dreams' I had such an emotional rush that I sobbed. He was an amazing presence on screen. I think that we need to applaud the artist even if some people don't like the behaviour of the man. If it wasn't illegal then what's the problem?
Burt was one fabulous actor.
According to Shirley Jones, who starred with him in Elmer Gantry, he was the best kisser in the business. Them’s bragging rights. Burt was an amazing actor.
THE PROFESSIONALS is an interesting film. Ahead of its time as it criticizes the USA interfereing with Mexico. Also intersting that Lancaster was the Lee Marvin of the movie, and Marvin teh Lancaster in the movie.
Marie Gomez ❤
Nobody like him today,Burt was a real superstar

What about LAWMAN, APACHE,
Ĵñɓ@@johnbyrnes7912
At 50 and with nothing left to prove in Hollywood Burt had the courage to play lead as an princein the Italian historical epic (3 hours) The Leopard and directed by authentic aristocrat Visconti. Burt won Europe's 'Oscar' at Cannes and has described it as his most satisfying role. Unfortunately it was drastically cut for US release and failed there (not uncommon then and full version rates 98 on RT). Martin Scorcese docos testify to the profound influence of Italian cinema on his own work.
He starred with my Faverit Actress Jean Simmons. She was very Beautifulm Lucky Man.
Watch a Burt Lancaster movie. Any one of them. Now, see what actor stands out the most for you. The odds are it will be Burt Lancaster. He exhibited his charisma naturally. Depending on his role, he could turn the charm on or off. Simply unforgettable is Burt Lancaster.
You left out his long friendship with Kirk Douglas, the final years of his film career, ("Tough Guys"), and his stage work. I saw him onstage with Douglas in SF, back in the 80's in "The Boys in Autumn."
One word for burt brilliant
Burt was what we call a one dimensional actor, definitely not a character actor. Brilliant onscreen & a top box office draw, Burt certainly had the 'IT' factor but he was always, like 99% of actors one dimensional, he always played to type, the same character! Great character actors, above Lancaster & other one dimensional actors, were the likes of Danny de Vito, John Mills, Alec Guinness, Robert De Nero, Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, Daniel Day Lewis etc.
Sorry Augie/Sept, you missed the mark by a mile. Burt Lancaster was a nuanced actor's actor of range.
That's rich. J. Edgar making allegations about another Man's Masculinity!
He was superb in The Leopard.
Burt is still my favourite actor, I loved all of his western movies that he made, more so than any of the other Hollywood western actors. he had such a great presence on screen, He was so believe able in his many roles.
It's stupid to shame people with talent out of jealousy. Talented folks don't follow the common path. Lancaster was simply another complicated actor who could play pretend well. His roles were memorable. Few actors took the risks he would take in roles; The Swimmer, Local Hero, bad guys, and good guys. They were all memorable. Awards are for performances, not personalities.
burt shamed plenty of people (and everything they say about his private life was probably true) but he was amazing.
He was terrific in the 1972 western "Ulzana's Raid".
One of his wonderful though small was as a german magnate of a company which employed slave labour in WWll, his acceptance of the evil he took part in, dignified and world weary was great, i ask you to watch Judgement at Nuremburg. It has many other great performances noy least from Spencer Tracy.
"Kerr, rhymes with star!" was the publicity at the time for Deborah, not the 'Kur' you use.
1966-1970 I was in the Navy. One of the guys in my unit, before he joined the Navy to avoid the draft. He worked at one of the BIG Hollywood Studios. He was in the section where raw film was cut into movies. He told us stories about two actors who were shielded by the Hollywood Moguls. Burt Lancaster& Rock Hudson. The stuff he talked about portrayed both as sexual deviants.
Did either of them have the necessary anatomy?
Don't Forget Robert Wagner. They Shielded him too. When he married Natalie Wood the first time she found him with his Valet. In Bed!
So.
What possible business is anyone's alleged private life to you? Where's your legacy? What did you act in, or produce?
@oogieobanyon If people portray themselves in a false way to the public it's wrong. A deviant is a deviant. Of course, that definition might not be what it was, rightly or wrongly.
Great actor.
I was born in 1965 he was ever present in pop culture. I always had an aversion to his movies. Idk still why he bothers me but he does.
The Rose Tattoo… Anna and Burt🔥🔥❤️❤️✨
Two of my favorite Lancaster films are Apache with Jean Peters and Charles Bronson. Also Atlantic City with Susan Sarandon. Some very tender scenes with his unabashed vitality.
"Executive Action" might have raised FBI's eyebrows also.
@thepiratemachine : Yeah, cuz the FBI was very aware of The Company's treasonous complicity in the overall plot to murder JFK, touched on in the public admittance the falsely accused killer had met weekly with the FBI.
Movie was GARBAGE.
@@rufust.firefly4890 Said the CIA spokesman.
I guarantee, at some point, more than one dad/granddad used to point at the screen and say, "That young man once sang while he served me my lunch!" And the kids just rolled their eyes. :)
Err, yeah...if you like 🙄
Nobody ever matched Lancaster's dynamism and athleticism in action movies. He is still being underrated. I'd rather watch the Crimson Pirate than the latest Marvel movie any day of the week.
So what ‘eh
