The boys were deeply committed to one another and it is not surprising that Stan did not attend the funeral. As it has been said, "Not without Babe!" Laurel's sympathetic love for his friend is a damn sight better than today's so called friendships between stars. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy loved each other as friends and respected each other as colleagues. We will never see another such close comedic duo ever again. Rest in Peace boys!

This is why we see Jack Benny wearing an English derby in his cameo. Stanley Kramer planned that for Stan Laurel, and he had already filmed a long shot of the car slowing down and stopping using an extra in a derby in order to match the footage of Laurel that was to be filmed later. When Laurel turned the part down it was necessary to have whoever replaced him wear a hat that matched. “Trouble?,” he asks. “Having any trouble?” Kramer must have appreciated the irony of the line.

Laurel and Hardy were and are my favorites. Watching their films on TV with grandfather in 1950-51 are the most memorable. My papa passed in 1951. By that time I was hooked for the rest of my life. When Ollie died in 1957, when I was 13 I cried. I lost my best friend of 67 years last fall. I grieve. I did not attend his funeral, nor was I at his death bed. We had gone through so much in life. If we didn't do it together, than it happens to us at about the same time. Both of us had watched our mothers die. It isn't any fun to watch some one die. And death don't come until it strips every last shred of dignity from you. My best friend did not want me to see him this way, and I told him, that if I didn't witness him dieing and I did see him in a coffin, then these wouldnt be my last memories of him. Very understandable, if you ask me. The loss of his best friend, Oliver Hardy, was a tragedy for Stan Laurel that he never really got over. Moreover, they were a world famous duo and at the funeral they would not have left Stan alone and bombarded him with all kinds of questions that would have been too much for him at that moment. That's the fate of being famous and automatically thrust into the spotlight, even on such extremely sad occasions. Saying goodbye to a deceased dear friend does not happen at a funeral, but in your heart! He had already said goodbye to his friend and besides, he was so devastated that it made him sick. He couldn't handle that funeral emotionally and he probably didn't feel the need to show everyone how devastated he was by the loss of his dead friend!

I totally understand Stan not attending his best friends funeral - he quietly paid his respects in his own private way - what were people expecting Stan to say at the eulogy 'Aren't you gonna hang I'm' - I think not.

I honestly didn’t know he didn’t attend his funeral, regardless if it was personal, or health. That’s his business, but I understand about grief and losing someone you love. The main thing is, their legacy lives on through old, and young audiences. Nothing beats the classics. As Hardy would say today, here’s another mess you gotten us into.

I can understand Stan Laurel’s absence from the funeral. My own father died early attending a friend’s funeral cutting his own life short by a few years after hitting his head against a cement floor after he was overcome by emotion. He was forewarned ahead of time before the funeral started, but decided to attend anyway. Things happen.

I was not surprised. A wonderful Italian documentary on them revealed the enormous respect Hardy had for Laurel. Hardy let Laurel chose all their work, scripts, et cetera. And Laurel with 7 marriages must have leaned on his friend throughout their 30 year friendship. I do enjoy studies on their art and career. Unfortunately, their films were reproduced in a primitive era. Thank you for this.

Absolutely understandable. You say goodbye to the people in your life your way, many people believe that attending a funeral is a sign of respect, but for myself and for what I would imagine is the case for a lot of people, it is just as respectful to simply remember the passed as the person they were, not as a body in a coffin.

My late mum and dad were Laurel and Hardy fans so in my childhood I was bought up watching Laurel and Hardy and so was my younger brother here in England. I am now 59 years old and I am still a Laurel and Hardy fan. I used to do paranormal investigations at different destinations around England, one Birthday my brother and his then wife plus our late parents paid for a paranormal investigation weekend at one of the most haunted hotels in the UK for my birthday in Dudley in the Midlands here in England. The Hotel was opposite a theatre which i later found out that Laurel and Hardy used in their tour around Britain, they even stayed at the Hotel that i was staying in and investigating. That was absolutely amazing that i could of walked in areas of the Hotel that they both walked on. I even visited the room's that they stayed in, i was in seventh heaven that the greatest comedy duo in history stayed there, i felt so happy and excited that i was in a place where Laurel and Hardy were. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

My childhood was filled with L&H as I and my grandfather laughed together at their antics. At age 10 Oliver’s passing in 1957 was my introduction to death and I grieved his loss as that of a beloved friend. Yes, I understand Stan’s choice and respect it.
Yesterday I had to put down my dear friend of 10 years, my much loved cat, whom I once saved from death. It was a refresher course in the personal agony death brings when it visits. I understand Stan completely. I think I wept in 1957 and did again yesterday. Death brings its own very special grief. The human response to it can be unpredictable. That includes a personal agony so great that one cannot attend the funeral of someone much loved..

Oliver Hardy's catch phrase, "Well This is Another Fine Mess You Got Me into". and Stan Laurel's scratching the top of his head. became synonymous with the duo of Laurel and Hardy. and added to them achieving such fame. I can see Stan Laurel's point? since they were like brother's and were inseparable, right up until Oliver Hardy's death. and his wanting the focus to be on his good friend at his funeral. I know if I lost someone that close to me? I would feel physically sick also. and I would be lost without them for sure. they were one of the most beloved comedy duo's of all time. and were up there with the likes of Charlie Chaplain and W.C. Fields. and no doubt American icons.

Great video. How well I can understand Laurel’s feelings. If my wife were to die before me I’d have enough problems coping without having to attend her funeral. I knew they were good friends off screen. Laurel & Hardy are among my favorite comedians. I have several of their short length and feature films.
I’d like to suggest covering Wayne & Shuster. They were a Canadian comedy duo, who held the record for the most appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show as they were his favorite comedians. They had many offers to go to the United States, but stayed here in Canada.

Stan Laurel was the comic genius of the two who kept notebooks all his working life of gags and bits.
This is an example of something that was never used:
Babe and I are schoolkids in class. Babe raises hand and squirming in his seat asks "Teacher may I go?". The teacher says "No, Oliver, you may not." Watching Babe squirm in misery, I raise my hand
    :Yes, Stanley?"
    'PLEASE LET HIM GO"
The whole of empathy, humanity and decency and love are contained in this little bit.

They were the original comic duo of my '80s childhood as their films were still being played on holidays and slow weekends in UK. I still find their feature films to be by far the best for their particular style of action or slapstick humour, the writing was truly hilarious some of the best jokes ever made.
It's a bittersweet story about Mr Laurel not attending his close friend Mr Hardy's funeral although absolutely understandable even admirable I'd say. Nice to learn it wasn't that they'd fallen out etc..

To this day, The pair remain icons to me... I may have been born in 1973, but Stan & Ollie alongside Harold Lloyd were my introduction to comedy that I remember... Even now, I could put on just about anything they appeared in and LAUGH...
I do not know much about the duo away from the screen, I never felt the need to know... I know that since both men have passed - Often Media Outlets trying to resonate with the fond memories left behind try to dig up some kind of dirt, It seems to me sometimes that even the dead can never have peace without someone trying to blacken your name.
One such story was that Oliver was a Perfectionist, and could be very hard to work with - Even if he was... Stan and Ollie had a bond, and an understanding that far surpassed potentially any comedy duo ... EVER! I think the closest we have veer had in modern History would be MORCOMBE AND WISE - Eric Morecombe being well known for his "Perfectionist" attitude towards his art... And just like Stand and Ollie, No matter what may or may not have been behind the scenes, They were two of the closest friends you could ever hope to have met!
While many have said that Ant & Dec are the Eric and Ernie of the New Generation... I don't honestly feel or believe we will EVER see another pair as Iconic as Old Stand and Ollie... They are Legends for a reason, And I feel that any Comedy Duo wanting to make a name should look to them... Their Brotherly Love and Genuine Respect is what made them Giants that have far surpassed and been remembered for Generations.
Heaven really must be beautiful with their souls providing entrainment! God Rest them both!
