This is a follow up to the previous video looking for Goblin Green paint to use on bases for oldhammer miniatures.
This one I have sourced an old Citadel Hex pot to get even closer to the original (It may even be the same paint?) as well as two new paints: Coat D'Arms and Warcolours Nostalgia '88
Will these be closer to what we are looking for?

I'm not even in the market for Goblin Green paint, but I love these videos. In the name of science! Actually, maybe I could use some green...
Thanks haha glad to have entertained 😄
Lol the "arms like a teenager" remark after shaking a paint pot 😬😂
HMG Paints was the manufacturer of the original round and hex pot GW paints, as well as the Formula P3 Paints by Privateer Press and, as you mentioned, the CDA range.
My understanding is that the CDA paint range was basically Coat D’Arms just going to HMG and asking them to restart the GW paint range (hex pot era) under new names.
Also, Mike McVey, who designed the hex pot era redesign of the original GW range, also designed the P3 paint range, and side by side with the CDA range, they look identical. So P3 Paints may be another option.
Ahhh I was wondering what Mike mcvey was up to nowadays thanks for the info
Quite fantastic to see all of these in a direct comparison. Thanks for doing the legwork!
My pleasure!
I mix warboss green and moot green in a 1:1 ratio and it looks fine
Great video. Really enjoyed watching this. I really gotta try out Nostalgia and Coat. Heard only good things about them!
Both really good paints I have a follow up video coming soon talking about them
Just watched both videos and while watching the first video I actually felt the vallejo was closest to what I remembered Goblin Green being even though it wasn't close to the other 3 you had.
Seeing the results here matching up with that is fun.
That Nostalgia 88 is amazingly close on camera.
While I realise the point of this was to find an easily acquired replacement it would be interesting to get the hex pot Goblin Green, and if you have access to something you know was painted with the older round GW pot green, colour matched in a paint store. Not sure if it would actually help in terms of mixing your own or getting some custom made though.
Great video! Thanks for figuring this out for me!
No worries
Someone just posted a link to this video on fb after me enquiring about a load of 1st gen (20ml round) Citadel Paints I was recently gifted including Goblin Green. Thanks for the comparison, I had no idea about vintage paints and only slightly more about modern ones 😂
Oh wow! excellent, glad you found the channel and this video was of help! Those round bottles are excellent haha. Hope you enjoy the channel if theres anything you'd like to see let me know!
@@TheBattlinBarrowGaming cheers, not my first time here as got into collecting MESBG stuff late last year but someone gifted me about 60 vintage citadel paints and a copy of Heroquest (+2) that he'd had for 30yrs like new.
Just popping the scenery off the cardboard mounts whilst watching your HQ vids 😁
that is serious investigation. Thank you
I did a part three haha.
@@TheBattlinBarrowGaming seen it!
Planning on doing other colours at some point.
I use and like the Coat d'arms paints, particularly their Goblin Green!
Coat d'arms are my favourite paints
Heard its quite transparent and needs quite a few coats?
@@camy252camy3 Goblin green over a wraithbone base usually needs 3 coats. If I used my preferred black, Vallejo Model Air black, it would also take 3 coats. So, it's thin, yes, but not an issue IMO. It certainly behaves better than AP paints!
Loved this, great demo. So, Ref the CDA Goblin Green (which I have been using since 2014) had recently changed hue, I purchased a pot last month and the colour is exactly the same as the warcolour 88’ Goblin Green and also the really poor watery consistency. Im convinced they are made in the same factory.
I also bought the Foundry “French gun green” to try as thats very very similar to Goblin Green, maybe worth looking into. Keep up good work.
Also, it takes 4-5 coats to paint a base (white undercoat). Which is not good. I wish they would make these paints more opaque/earth pigment.
I’m going to run after that Nostalgia 88 if I can find it
I got this from their website as well as a few others.
It's discontinued as of may iirc- their nostalgia 94 line is great tho.
An excellent demonstration of the colour variance. Interesting to learn the equivalent substitutes in current manufacturers. I wonder, is there an equivalent spray nowadays to the original goblin green? 🤔
Interesting.... A new quest!
Next time you could go questing for Orc Brown, from the good old days where ors actually was brown :-)
Haha Next week I have a video coming out on retro paints and one set has an Orc Brown in it so that may be of interest to you ;)
@@TheBattlinBarrowGamingI will look forward to that :-)
This is a great series! Ive used all of these brands and this was informative.
Vallejo is my personal favorite cuz they are very consistent but i use all the others depending on pigment, army painter and GW especially.
Out of curiosity why are you so down on the modern citadel line? Ive used plenty of their paints and most of them are good aside from certain whites and yellows.
I know all companies do this to an extent but its the naming. GW like using their "made up" names for paints that are meaningless to me. I prefer things like beastial brown and snot green. They are still somewhat descriptive. There modern ( and this may of changed as I dont really use them anymore) always seemed chalky to me, and finially the colours seemed off compaired to what they where before they changed formula. I do like their contrast paints and use those a lot. I just rebottle them as I dislike their paint bottles too. And I guess the final thing is the price they are more expensive than the other ranges I now use.
@@TheBattlinBarrowGaming all of these are legitimate and thought out critiques- their paints are mostly free of that chalkiness nowadays (aside from the aforementioned whites and yellows) and ya know I NEVER thought about their naming conventions but that is a really good point! It makes color matching to other brands on the fly a little more difficult.
The reason I ask is cuz I see so many longtime hobbyists dismissing anything newer out of hand- some of this is totally warranted but I also think that us hobbyists have access to many more quality paints and equipment than people had in the 80s and 90s
@@josiegreene6140 I do kind of agree we have way more options and variety than before, but when it comes to paints I prefer the old citadel range from the 90s and coat d'arms. I prefer the more vibrant colours I get. Luckily modern companies like Warcolors do great retro clones. As mentioned I do really love GWs Contrast Paints and use them more than anything. I do sometimes use Army Painters Speed Paints but I think Contrast are just a bit better
@@TheBattlinBarrowGaming I haven't used many speed paints but Sigismund yellow is the EASIEST way to paint something yellow- my god it changed the way I do cabling.
This video inspired me to get a few coat d'arms paints- hopefully they come in soon and I can get my WHFB orcs based appropriately.
To my eye the Coat D'Arms is a tad darker and the 88 is a tad lighter heh. I wonder if you mixed the two you'd have it!
I may give that a try!
I wonder if scaly hide by army painter is a better classic match
They sent me greenskin I'm wondering if that works.warcolors has a new one coming soon. Part four? Haha
Now if I could just find some hex pot Dark Angels green
Haha I still have a pot of it! try coat d'arms if you want a close substitute use the code batlinbarrow1 to get 10% off if you are in the UK :D
@@TheBattlinBarrowGaming Nice! Ty!
Have you tried Kelly grass by Apple barrel
No but I will now! Thanks for the heads up
Before watching this, i'd be surprised if anything other than Coat d'arms is closest to goblin green.
Yep! But nosgalia 88 are good too
I have some circular pot goblin green I can donate to the cause I think. lmk if you are interested!
Oh wow! yeah that would be awesome. I did try to track some down for this but had no joy.
@@TheBattlinBarrowGaming Not sure how I can contact you. any ideas?
@@Maggers42 Hi oh yeah that will help wont it, sorry about that. Scatty brained today. My email is: mithaearon@hotmail.com
@@TheBattlinBarrowGaming Hi! replied I dug them out so lmk if you still need 'em :)
8:07 you said i hope this one wins because it is easy to get a hold of for me (reffering to coat t arms) but you disqualified it last video because it didn't fit the requirement of ease of access. How does that make sense?
Mainly the world changed so I'm ordering online more rather than physically going to a store
I love useless but entertaining videos like this
Haha Thank you :D
Miiiiiiinor bit of feedback. Your cover image kinda spoils the result reveal
It's always about the journey, not necessarily the destination…
I'm an absolute _novice_ painter. As in, I've started painting bits of custom boards and terrain, but not actually tried painting any minis yet since I'm still developing VERY basic painting skills. (And I am improving!) When I do … I have several round pot Citadel paints from 1989, unopened! The Advanced HeroQuest Paint Set! No brush, but otherwise complete! None of the paints are dry like in Ninjon's recent video where he reconstituted dry paints to life, but e.g. the chaos black was separated and probably so have others.
They might just need a good shake. They might need a proper science project to revive. When I've got the skill to put them to good use, I might see what I can do with them.
Yeah darn just realised that sorry about that
@@knghtbrd I've just been given some old round 20ml from boxed sets minus the boxes. Surprisingly, only 2 metals were really bad. I didn't add any distilled water or mixing medium but gave them a stir and some time on a vortex shaker and even the badly separated ones look good to go.
@@tuvaaq A couple of these have separated, but I'm sure that they can all be revived, including the bolt gun metal and chaos black.
@@knghtbrd the tin blitz and bronze of mine looked beyond recovery without trying to grind down the solid nugget of pigment, you might have the same with bolt gun
