I remember mithril silver being pretty transparent and watery. Boltgun metal was more opaque. Chainmail armor was gloopy as heck, but I guess that was just my pot. As you said, batches were probably pretty inconsistent, so I guess we remember different things because we did experience different things. My goblin green definitely had that hint of white of the original one, unlike the Warcolors one. Gracias por hacerme recordar todo esto ❤

My old bolt gun metal was always pretty *thick* and somehow separated a lot as well.
Sometimes I would buy a brass colour and it was completely unusable and sort of jelly like.

@JuanHidalgo Miniatures - an interesting bit of background:
Coat D’Arms is made by the original manufacturer of GW’s 88/94 paint lines (HMG Paints), and is basically a rebranding of the ‘94 range (albeit many people think it’s watered down).
Privateer Press’ P3 Paints are also made by HMG, and were designed by Mike McVey, who oversaw the ‘94 redesign of the GW paints. Allegedly, P3 uses liquid pigments and gel medium to facilitate wet blending. I’ve compared P3 to Coat D’Arms, and it really looks like P3 is essentially a modified GW ‘94 line (minus the 20 or so newer paints P3 added over the last 5 years or so).
Foundry Paints is also made by HMG. It’s a triad system and not directly based on GW afaik, but Foundry is owned by ex-GW and I wouldn’t be surprised if the 88 and/or 94 range was essentially hidden inside it.
TL;DR - a retro focused review of the above paint ranges alongside Warcolours’ Nostalgia 88 and 94 ranges would be really interesting to see the sorta mini-legacy of 90s GW and a single paint manufacturer across multiple paint ranges.

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I wanted to also add that I really loved your point in this review about the “purpose” of the nostalgia paint range and how it doesn’t try to be perfect or cutting edge of modern paint design. Plus it seemed really obviously how genuinely you enjoyed being reminded of your first paints.
I started in ‘93 or ‘94, so that 90s Citadel range remains my favorite. I used to own the full Coat D’Arms range, but when I realized that there seems to be a nearly 1:1 parallel between it and P3 (for example, P3 Rucksack Tan appears to be its Snakebite equivalent), I switched to P3 as that was easier to find here in the US.
I currently primarily use the Nostalgia 88 and P3 ranges as my primary paints, and will be adding the Nostalgia 94 line. I do use a few others, like some Pro Acryl and for my money nothing beat Kimera Kolors The White, but it’s been really satisfying and fun to find my old paints again, so to speak.
At this point, all I’m missing are paint brushes with the hand-feel of those old red handled Citadel brushes. I know they weren’t super special either compared to what’s out there now, but I have a similar soft spot for them too.

Interesting review there. I couldn't get on with Citadel paints; far too shiny for my liking when they dried. I actually mentioned this dislike to the great Blanchitsu back in the early 90s when I was a teen at a GW factory open day in Nottingham, his response was interesting he said 'add some talcum powder to the paint' to matte it down. I didn't try his suggestion, wasn't sure if he was joking or not. I faithfully stuck with my Ral Partha paints which were matte but chalky; would love to see a Ral Partha Nostalgia paint line - still got the whole line of theirs safely stored in dropper bottles.

I've been painting since the 1980s and remember the original line and the 90s lines and have paints from both including my father's original sets from 1988. There were quite a lot of changes over the years that makes matching the original paints a challenge. You are right than mithril silver was thick and actually quite gummy. The medium then had a lot of vinyl in it and it separated quickly and dried very quickly making dry brushing over black the preferred method of painting metallics, especially thick were the 1980s line which came in the magical round pots. By the early 1990s they started using hex pots as you showed and by the mid 1990s they started using a twist tops with a hard plastic pot and then changed the lid to a flip top. Tthe hard plastic pots were paints made in france. The paint quality was very good but the paints dried out quickly because of the inferior pots and the flip top helped with that. Of course now gamesworkshop has their own unique pot with semi-clear lid, but a few companies still use the classic pots and everyone should. In those kinds of pots the paints will literally last forever if taken care of correctly. The pots are enchanted for this effect. The warcolours classic '88 line matches the metallic colors closer than anything I've tried, but they are thinner and more suited to wet blending and probably better for painters today, but they feel different than the originals because the medium is different. The rest of their colours are very close, but not exact matches for the original colours. Again there's a reason why a colour match is difficult. The earliest versions of goblin green were a bit olive drab, the later version more neutral, and by the mid 90s they were the color of chromium oxide green and used a very pure vibrant green probably made from pthalo-green pigment. There were also three versions of enchanted blue. The first generation was an iron-blue (prussian blue) with white added for opacity and brightness, to this more white was added to make the earliest electric blue a lighter version of the same color, both were opaque, the second generation was semi-transparent and had a hazardous chemical in it probably to increase flow and prevent clumping but came in hex pots and was richer without much white or any added it was the color of phthalo blue so that's probably the pigment used, then there was the mid 90s hard plastic pot version which was very plastic in it's finish and probably used the same pigment as it had a strong dying effect and it's current match is citadel/gamesworkshop's caledor sky. There was also a colour called moody blue which was a darker version of enchanted blue without white added in the first generation line. It was very powerful, rich, dark, moody, and largely transparent. It was discontinued for some reason. The titillating pink from the 88 era has never been replicated by any manufacturer though warcolours tried. Their base colour is very close but the original had a yellow fluorescent overtone probably from a later banned chemical used in highlighters according to legend. The first generation hobgoblin orange was not a bright orange but rather a slightly dull orange sienna. The earliest blood red was not a warm red but rather a scarlet, but this later changed and blood red became their warmer primary red. Originally the warmer red was called red gore. This change happened pretty early from what I can tell. Worm purple has never been replicated correctly by anyone, though the warcolour version is good it's not the same. It likely used a pigment only now commonly used in the car industry in high temperature applications if my research and guesswork is right, but it can be mixed fairly well from modern paints if you know the secret recipe. The earliest version of bestial brown has also never been matched. It's got an overtone missing from modern browns. If I were to guess I'd say the same sienna used to make the earliest version of hobgoblin was added to burnt umber to make it more opaque. But there was a later version of bestial brown from the mid 1990s that was also very good. The closet matches one to one out there for the old paints comes from a company called Coat D'Arms, but the naming changes cause confusion. For example their enchanted blue is actually a blue metallic, a nice paint in its own right, but the correct replacement for enchanted blue in their line is called Light Blue and Bavarian Blue is also very close, but slightly different. I happen to love warcolours classic '88 line. Their reds are amazing. I also love that the come in the classic round pots that last forever. That marker is a great idea. It would be great to have an artist line of markers with matching colors for each of the classic colours.

It's one of those crucial finishing touches though. Makes a model go from a work in progress to a finished work.
How do these paints stack up to Coat D'Arms paints? As I understand it those aren't just a reproduction of the old school Citadel paints, they are the old school Citadel range. Not in droppers though. Warcolours instantly have a leg up there. And I respect it being a full one-man production.

I started in about '91, with the previous generation to the hex pots - the ones Coat d'Arms imitated/reproduced/whatever. Then moved on to the hex pots, then the horrific screw-cap ones that dried out in days... the best day of my mini-painting life was when I discovered a little scale modelling shop tucked away in the town I grew up in that sold Vallejo Model Colour! There were about five paints in the Citadel range from the 90s that could hold a candle to VMC. The only ones I'd never give up from the Citadel range were all the weird colours that would never be useful for military modellers - bilious green and titillating pink and tin bitz and so on.
(And I also remember mithril silver being unusably thin, boltgun metal covering properly, and chainmail being somewhere between the two. I guess it was something to do with whatever they used to tint the paint darker as tin bitz - darker even still than boltgun metal - had the opposite problem and was often far too thick and dried on the brush!)

    • @jeremiahembs5343
      @jeremiahembs5343 Před rokem

That's correct Sheep Wave Me Bye Bye. As you and warcolourspaints said proper technique then was black first, then dry brush metallic over it. The metallics dried quickly, so quickly in fact you have to IMMEDIATELY wash your brush after every stroke and dab again on paper towels before doing it again. You might think that you could just keep them moist with water, but that broke the metallic paint and caused the flakes of metal to go into the recesses of the model which ruined the effect because the recesses would be light and the highlights dark. The proper technique of drybrushing over black was specifically invented for doing chainmaile to pick out the raised areas, but it worked well on armor and swords too because the weapon would look a bit battle damaged and not so garish and the black undercolor looked more like the monster was in a dark environment like a dungeon or cave. Now because modern paints flows better and stay wet longer the proper technique is to coat with metallic and then wash with black or maybe a rusty color and then use black and then maybe highlight with a brighter metallic or with a metallic mixed with white or with white or offwhite first to create an edge highlight and then glaze on a metallic over that which will be backlit by the white. But I still do it the old way most of the time and use my older metallics to do it since they are chunkier and work better for it.

I can't really speak for the 94 paints as real life had turned up by that time, but I think it was the same mythril silver as was released in the 80s which I did have
But I was still painting in 93 (ironically a lot of stuff for the local GW shop) and the bright silver was still awful (had to go on over chainmail to get any depth, even over black it was better than going on over silver.)
You could look at the Warcolours 88 set for the original releases (though I had my original 18 citadel paints around 1985 so I don't know why they call them Nostalgia 88)
Personally I love my regular Warcolours paints (apart from the metallics) and although I have adopted the Monument paints I still break out the Warcolours when I need something with a bit of natural transparency
You could also look at the Cote de Arms range as they were the people who made the original Citadel paints and they still produce them.

You can actually smooth them out if you know how, but I prefer mine chunky. Throw two or three rust free mixer balls in the metallic pots so they bang against each other, add one drop of distilled water, tape on the lid and shake the crap out of it with a nail polish shaker to break it up and turn it smooth again. If they haven't hardened you can whip them into a smooth finish better than new. Usually the gold or brass go bad to a point they get rock hard, but in some rare case can be entirely restored, but the silvers are easy to fix. If you can fix a gold or brass from the era it's worth it's weight in... gold I guess. Very rare. So rare it should analyzed for its formula by warcolours I would think. You have a treasure in your old collection. It's a chemical time machine. A lot of fake sets now. It's very rare to have a known authentic set.
