I'm amazed that you managed that without spilling a drop. Also using the word infinitesimal in a video. 10/10.
Thanks 😘
These are some great tips, although I would also suggest picking up a 20ml/cc Packing Syringe with 1.5 Inch Blunt needle from amazon, so after you water the paints down you can basically suck up the entire pot, and put it right into the new bottle all in 1 go. Everything else I did pretty much the same except it was quicker and cleaner in my experience.
I just don't like to use extra tools if I can avoid it but yeah
I bought the wrong type of syringes and ended up just scooping with a brush. Wasn’t too bad but pretty frustrating. I got into a bit of a rhythm and did about 20 bottles. I got 10 more to go and now I just can’t be bothered haha
I feel like this could all be solved by GW just using dropper bottles from the start, but no.. we can't have that. we need your paints drying out early so you buy more paint!
I really don’t like dropper bottles and find they waste far more paint than flip top bottles do.
Believe it or not a lot of people prefer pots and that's ok. Pots are more user friendly for new painter, specially for younger hobbyists and they do have their advantages
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures until the paint explodes all over you when trying to open a stiff top 😂 Happened to my grandson when opening a contrast paint pot.
It sounds like from the former GW paint manager that was on the Painting Phase that GW won’t do dropper bottles because they basically want kids and beginners to paint with as few requirements, IE you can paint straight from a pot while a dropper bottle will require some sort of palette or similar item to put the paint on.
We also need to be cool unique and special.
Juan, thank you for doing this. It is a simple process, you are correct. I appreciate the effort you made. I was able to easily duplicate your results, including the crooked label 😃 Thank you.
Happy to help!!
Thanks for the simple video Juan. I love that, despite showing how this simple process works for you, and explaining why you don't want to use additional tools like funnels and syringes, the comments section is still filled with "helpful" suggestions of how you should do it differently!🤦♂
Thanks! I don't mind people sharing their methods or their suggestions. First it drives engagement and second some people might find it useful.
Always appreciate the time you take to make these guides. I'm happy with the native bottles/pots that each brand of paint I have comes in (even the Pro-Acryl) but can see how this would be useful for people.
Thanks!
The master Hidalgo did it again ! Thank you dear master painter -_- Edit : i love the link to paint bottles
Thanks, happy to help
I use a 3D printed screw-on funnel that works beautifully. I can scrape almost every last drop of paint out of the pot and scrape the brush on the lip of the funnel, then push it all down into the dropper. I only use white caps, then I put a drop of paint on the cap to show what color is inside. I then designed and printed a 10x10 rack that's less than 12" wide to slot them all into. Army Painter droppers fit int the rack as well. 100 paints in a tiny space-saving rack on my desktop. I should probably do a video to show it off.
This was great!
Trust in yourself and just pour from one container to the other!👍😎
ALWAYS TRUST IN YOURSELF!
Thank you for this Juan. It's always a bother to have to do this. But it's just so much more practical to use. I wish you showed off a base paint as well though. Since they're so much thicker than the layers.
It's the same process, just might need to add a bit more water
Another good video for the knowledge base.
Thanks
Just tried it. Thank you for this! 👍
Happy to help!!
I use similar steps, but then use an old size 2 or so brush to clean out the GW bottle and deposit into the new as well. Small extra step to get additional paint out.
I can't be arsed but it's a good additional step
I feel like I laughed at the sarcasm for "and I have a perfectly... crooked sticker" more than I should have. 🤣 Also A+ for yet another nice and simple. No BS fancy over the top way of doing the thing. Nice one Juan! Keep up the great work as always! 🙂
Thanks 😘
I use a mix of thinner and max 4 drops of flow improver. This makes the paint really flow nice on the wet palette.
I personally prefer not to mess with the paint chemistry but I understand why some people prefer to do it.
you can also use small stainless steel funnels. i find it is a bit easier and faster when you have a lot to transfer. some have the shape of airbrush cups you can put the pot on top and get the last bit of paint drop without holding them. very cheap too on AE.
I can't be arsed but you do you!
I made like this. Simple and effective.
YES
I whish this video was up when I started to transfer my paints to droppers 😁
Experience and a lot of trials and errors brought me to your same conclusions so my process is fairly identical.
Only difference are:
- i still use medium instead of water to thin the paints prior to transfer them. I lost count of how much Lahmian medium I burnt for this 😂 but now I’m going to try Scale 75 Dispel Magic medium that I read works magic and comes in 60ml bottles for less than a Lahmian medium pot.
- I’m using agitators balls (same from AP) in contrast too, for those one who leave a residue on the bottom, as you pointed out in your video.
Last, I’m going to give a go to your bottles since I’m not really happy with the ones I used until now (cheap ones from Amazon).
Thanks for the video on behalf of all the newer painters who will spare a lot of troubles watching this!
Happy to help!
To get even more paint out, you could use a clay shaping tool like a spartula, saving additional drops of paint and not thinning out your paint as much. Also, the clay shaping tool is super good for milliput/greenstuff work
I personally can't be arsed but it's a good tool to have and works well for this purpose
I just wear a tight non-powdered nitrile glove and swipe my index finger around the pot and scrape it off on the edge of the bottle. I use Monument Hobbies’ empty bottles because they have nice wide necks and come with glass bead agitators. Can salvage the vast majority of the leftover paints.
Gracias 😘
The moment I spilled my brand new pot of Apothecary White all over my desk, I was done with pots, even for contrast. My Wraithbone had already started to 'crust' along the edge, so in reality these pots are meant to dry up your paint, and force you to keep buying them, and to top it off they are more expensive and give you less. Also yeah, there may be a bit of loss of paint with the transfer, however the pot design makes you lose more, and glad you addressed it. It's malfeasance, by design IMO
It just works!
Less is usually more
Just buy a little funnel dude! Can leave the paint put upside down in the funnel and come back in 10 mins. Adding some water to the Citadel pot before transferring to a dropper bottle though is EXCELLENT advice. Makes the transfer so much faster, especially for the thicker base paints.
Thanks
Happy to help!
Great video. No idea what a vortex is and if it's needed though
It's a kind of mixer that makes life so much easier. Highly recommended but not needed
Genial! Esta bien saberlo
Cool 👍
Thanks
Juan answers all your major hobby questions. This week, paint transfer, next week, brush care, week three? Where babies come from
I'm still not sure I know the answers to the last one but I'm investigating the matter VERY PASSIONATELY
Might be worth putting something across the opening of the pot with 1 end into the dropper to give you a bit more control over the pour. This trick brought to you by a lab chemist.
NICE! Thanks
what do you recommend?
Great video once again! What did you stick in front of your lamps? Is that plain paper to diffuse the light or some special shade?
It's literally just a sheet of office A4 paper
Im planning do do this myself. I know you said that the water does not change the paint much. What about when doing things like edge highlights? Im guessing its fine but im just afraid ill screw up my paints. Especially with gw layer paints that are already quite thin.
As simple as that ! Perfect thank you ! What model of Vortex do you use ?
Four Es
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you for the reply 👍
@shrikewing Happy to help
Take care, mate.
Thanks 😘
Instead of using steel mixing balls, I recommend glass ones. Similar effect, but definitely won't ever rust!
I find they don't weigh enough for me but it's a good choice
You can also buy glass balls made for mixing chemicals, they're really cheap.
They don't weigh enough for me
If you’re prepared to scoop with a brush you can really get most of it out. Scoop around with a flat brush and scrape it into the dropper
I can't care enough to do it but yeah it's a good solution
Man, I remember transferring all of my Citadels and it was such a pain. Don't get me wrong, it was worth it, but I ended up moving to vallejo anyway. I definitely used funnels, though. They were really helpful because I could transfer multiple paints at a time and I could then use small sticks to pull out remaining paint from the pots and into the new bottles easily. Pots ended up so empty that I would say the paint loss was seriously only about 1%! However, like you said, even a 5% paint loss isn't a big deal.
At the end of the day it's your choice, but I prefer mine obviously
@@JuanHidalgoMiniaturesFor sure! If I was only moving a couple paints, I would do like you showed and skip the funnel. Distilled water is also a great option over mediums, as you point out.
I've found that bicycle bearings are a great alternative to paint agitators. They're much more readily available and don't come with the "specialist hobby item" markup. They're pretty much the same thing - I wouldn't be surprised if Army Painter sources from the same manufacturer(s).
NICE!!
Is the font you used in the transitions the Battlestar Galactica font?
No but it's similar I will admit. It's called Bank Gothic
small tipp, dont touch the mixing balls ever with your fingers to reduce the risk of rust, pick them up with your tweezers
GOOD CALL
found glass balls were the best. metal always gets a bit funny
I find they don't weigh enough for me but we have to find wheat works for us
Glass balls are best I find you don’t have to worry about rust
Too light for me
Everyone has there own opinion, I for one love GW paints. They are colorful and for me very easy to obtain. When I transfer paints I use a cheap brush and no thinner and a funnel and just scrape every single drop as I can to fill up that bottle.
I LOVE citadel paints, they are fantastic.
I use galvanized BB's, super cheap. I think 6000 of em was under $15
Gracias guapo 😘
This might be a stupid question, but could I use thinner instead of water when doing this? I don't have distilled water, but I've been using airbrush thinner to thin paints even when painting by hand, so it's what I have available.
Of course you can
thank you for this very useful video, I would like to do it with mine too but I'm afraid that the paint might dry more easily...
I say this because when I open the pots I see how the color is and I can add a few drops of water if is drying while with the droppers I can't see inside...
do you have experience with this? Thanks
I have all my paints transferred years ago and they are all in perfect condition. That's the main benefit of droppers, paint doesn't dry in them
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you, you're great! :D
@andreatauschwitz3458 I KNOW!!
Hey Juan, thanks for the great video. I did try in the transfering paints to droppers in the past but I've encountered a problem with them. When I want to use the paint after shaking it, there's always some paint just flowing out of it on it's own wasting a good dollop in the process, I wonder if it happend to you and if so, do you have any idea how to stop it from happening. I've tried tapping the bottle before opening and letting it sit for a moment but nothing seems to work. Thanks!
That usually has to do with the dropper itself. It might be too small and gets filled up too much.
Also I recommend you get a vortex mixer, it gets rid of that issue since you aren't shaking the paint up and down. It's a well worth investment
same problem here, i try to fix it to stretch the hole with a 2mm hand drill, not perfect but better than the original dropper hole. The problem resides in a not enough diluition
I find you do need to add mixing balls to some contrast paints. Some seem to settle out pretty bad.
Not with a Vortex mixer but I understand what you say
I never understood the people who felt the need to use funnels and stuff... That's just extra work they're making for themselves.
I personally don't even cut the lids off; I just pop them off instead. It's actually surprising how easy the 'ring' pops off the pot with sufficient force.
I agree
Do the glass agitators from Monument rust? 😅
It's the latest innovation in glass technology!
Do you find a significant difference between the thin needle tip vs the stubby tip?
I very much prefer the needle one myself.
Note that you should use distilled water only. Tap water will eventually turn rotten and grow mould inside the paint.
Also you can just use an old brush to scoop out those remaining last bits of paint.
ONLY distilled water please
Would it be better to use acrylic medium instead of water or do you find it doesn’t matter?
DISTILLED water is all you need
Thanks for the Video! I might have missed it in the Video, but what size are the Bottle you get? Are they 20ml or more?
I do say it but I don't mind repeating, it's 20 ml
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thanks I did hear it when I rewatched it. But thanks!
@romer131 VIEWS FOR THE VIEWS GOD
How big are the dropper bottles you use? 15ml or 20 ml? I have been thinking of doing this for a very long time now.
20 ml is my recommendation
How high are the 20ml drop bottles + caps?
Preferably in cenitmeters.
I would like to know if they will fit into my drawer while standing up :)
81 mm tall
Only question I have is does the paint ever get any thicker again or is it now permanently thinned? This may affect my ability to dry brush with transferred paint which is something do a lot to save time painting loads of orks.
It doesn't, so if you want thicker paint consider not transferring them or using a syringe
Juan, How many ml are the bottles you are using? 15 or 20 ml. Great video.
20 ml thanks!
Gracias.
I don't know why, but out of 30 GW paints that I hadn't used in 6-8 months I found that 8 were a huge block of colored plastic. I was very careful in trying to clean the edge of the cap, however there was nothing to do and I had to throw them away. 25 euros in the trash.😮💨
That sucks
Glass mixing balls never rust, regardless of brand 🎉
They also weigh less, it's a give and take situation
👍👍
😘😘
amzn.to/4bRMmrK
@zurmanskyplayer9058 uso de 20ml.
When you use a funnel (which in right size is hard to find and I 3d printed mine) you can easily "scrape off" the last paint from the pot with an old brush and have basically no paint left in the pot. Also my hands are just not steady enought to hold the pot and the bottle together for time it takes for the paints to come out. I could do maybe one or two but when transferring youre whole collection...
I get it, I just hate to have to clean them afterwards. But sometimes you need to use the tools you need to use
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I have a large cup of water next to me and I usually have about 4-5 bottles/funnels going on at one time. Once one of them has drained, I throw the funnel into the cup and after all are done I just quickly rinse them in the sink, dry them with a towel or paper and can start a new batch right away. The funnels aren't completely without staining, but they are clean enough to be reused without the colors contaminating the next batch.
i use glass stirring beads
Also a good option
Guess I need to get myself a little distilled water. This is stupid easy and it might just be worth the effort transfer my Citadel paints over.
I can happily report the Green Stuff World their mixing balls also don't rust. I put them in my lighter contrast paints (the ones that have visible residue on the bottom) as it mixes them back together a little fast. They haven't given me trouble yet.
Also, AK Interactive sell empty dropper bottles in packs of 6. They got a nice little indent on the cap that you can easily drop a little paint into. Perfect for easy reference of what the paint looks like when dry.
Awesome! I refuse to buy anything from GSW but it's good to know there are alternatives for other people
You DEFINITELY need agitator balls. He says you don't need them - you absolutely must have them.
I initially skipped that part. But if you leave your paint for long enough - it'll separate. And with some paint - no amount of shaking gets it fully mixed.
I have a vortex mixer - and I still couldn't mix it well.
Gave in, bought and added army painter balls - and in 2 minutes of shaking my paint finally got back to its original state.
Adding two balls is a bit better, that's also what Army Painter does with all their new paint lineups. More than that is overkill.
DONT SKIP THEM.
Also be very careful withwater. You cannot take it out once you add it. Nowadays I prefer to add no water.
Instead, on a fresh unopened Citadel pot, I use clay shaping tools - the flat silicone brush in particular. It lets me scrape 99% of paint out of the pot.
Be careful doing that on a used paint. Pots are bad because they let paint dry by exposing a lot of surface area to air. You don't wanna scrape dried paint bits into your dropper bottle.
I specifically state you need and which ones I recommend. I only say they are not needed for contrast.
Are those the 15ml bottles for the base paints?
20 ml, I recommend 20 for everything although I still have some old 15ml ones
the best thing to do is transfer the colour when you are about to use it so then you can use the left over paint in the pot that session, so there is minimal waste\
That's what I did!!
Came to hear Juan talking about what balls he likes. Stayed for snuggles after.
Lol
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 😉
i got into 40k during the pandemic lockdowns and have come to hate gw pots. which is a shame bc i like the paint itself. im not going to bother trnsfering paints. i think when i buy something new or as i run out of something im just not going to replace it with gw im going to switch to a brand that isnt stupid. is there a reason i shouldnt just buy valejo?
If you prefer Vallejo do it! I just like Citadel and some of the paints are the best in the market for their hue, so I'm going to keep buying them.
Also I like to have citadel for the videos as it's the most readily available paint in the market.
Hello juan
😘
You don't actually need to cut the lid off of the GW pots. The plastic is flexible enough around the pot where you can simply pull the whole lid off.
Oh I know, but it makes it easier
I made the mistake of mixing in Golden’s airbrush medium. Now my paints take forever to dry and the medium seperates so quickly. Over a hundred Citadel paints are pretty much useless now. If anyone knows how to fix this please help.
Sadly there's very little you can do. That being said paints that dry slowly can be a great tool for wet blending and feathering
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you so much for answering. You’re right, I guess I should look at the bright side 🤍
Let me break this down for you all after a few years of my experience using GW paints in pots, wich made me an avid decanter of GW paints, eventually.
Their pots are an absolute nightmare to use with the Base and Layer paints so i did this to only THOSE paints. The Shades/Contrast/Metallics/Dry paints DO work fine their pots so no decanting needed there.
Maybe this can help you in some kind of way.
Ive tried and tested every dropper bottle known to mankind before decanting 70+ GW paints. They are good paints but expensive. So i really wanted the best ones; similar quality of Vallejo droppers wich i also use and took as a reference.
Size-wise 17ml is the most convenient and works best when transferring 12 ml from the GW pot. You'll mostly end up with 14-16 ml when your done.
I finally ended up with what i think are the best ones:
AK interactive 17 ml droppers for the Base/Layer and some 35 ml Vallejo mixing dropper bottles for my most used stuff.
The AK 17ml's are the same bottles used for their 3th Gen paint line. Really thick and sturdy quality plastic and the best twister cap in the business; WITH a dedicated hole on top for a drop of paint for easy colour reference.
All the cheap bulk bottles from Ebay/amazon are dirt cheap for a reason and they are simply not worthy of my expensive GW paint + all the effort involved.
And as a bonus: The 17ml AK dropper bottles come pre-loaded with a stainless steel agitator.. :) Very nice.
1.
Use a blob of stickytac/posterputty to stick the empty bottle to the surface you are working on.
2.
Then the rookie one; always start by putting on the label on your dropper bottle BEFORE the whole decanting process.... Einstein move and keeps it tidy and clean. The GW labels come off easily with a little attention and effort and just wrap them around the center of the new bottle.
3.
Check the consistency of the paint and thin as required
Some (older) paints are thicker and need a little mixture of lahmian medium/flow improver at most. Not too much. Give them a good shake and try to leave the paint as much as it is as possible!
4.
Then. Just. Poor. No funnels needed either, waste of money/paint; i mean everyone painting miniatures with teeny-tiny details, requiring a fairly steady grip/hold, can surely poor some paint from a pot into an opened dropper bottle, can we....? Its no big deal.
Needless to say dont poor with the opened lid still attached. The lids simply come of the GW pots as a whole, just put some pressure on the ring holding the pot with your nail and there it goes.
6.
When the initial poor is done, grab a damp fat and cheap pointy-ish brush and just start scooping the paint out of the pot (and from the inside of the lid) and run that filled-up brush along the inside edge of the opened dropper bottle. Works like a charm.
No scraping tool or whatever; with this method i get allmost every drop of paint out of the pot. Them GW's paints are expensive enough allready, im not wasting anything; and its even low effort getting it out like this.
7.
Finally pop on the dropper tip and you are golden!
Ofcourse the paint in the tip of the dropper part can dry up over time !Rule of thumb! When squeezing the bottle and nothing comes out, STOP SQUEEZING! Dont force it now, you just need to open the tip. For this, i keep and old miniature drill with a piece of ironwire attached it like a drill bit to stab into the dropper part.
8.
When done, dont let the leftover pigment dry up in the pot. Clean them out with hot water and a toothbrush directly afterwards and use for custom paint mixes/washes for perticular army projects. For ex. i used a very specific custom blue-ish glaze and paint colour for my Stormcast Eternals army, so i made some GW pots full of them so i could use it for the weeks to come.
Consistent results FTW!
+Bonus!
The pots do work good as a cheap painting handle!
Fill them up with dried sand for added weight/stability and pop on some blue-tac/posterputty.
Finally i use 6 of those huge 35ml dropper/mixing bottles from Vallejo for my most beloved washes and most used stuff: Nuln Oil, Agrax, Sepaphim, Reikland + Abaddon Black base and Skeleton Horde Contrast.
Good advice!
It took longer to read this than to watch Juan’s video. 🤣
6mm or 8mm BB beads don't rust and work just as well
Nice, I find the weight of the metal ones is worth it though
@@JuanHidalgoMiniaturescan't say I've noticed any discernable difference when combined with a good quality vortex mixer like the Four E's one

Good to know! Thanks
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures they are also cheeper, you get 150 8mm once for 10euros
So just water ? No getting fancy with mediums ? Just plain ole water?
DISTILLED water, but yeah
Printed some funnels and a holder, so every drop could be collected.
But I won't be buying gw bottles ever again. Unless ofc they switch to droppers themselves
Sadly that's not happening
You will loose less paint during transfer than during regular pot usage where 30% of it dries hard.
100% true
Do you reckon their is any downsides to using plastic agitators? I’ve got a slew of space marine heads that need a purpose. 😅
The weight, plastic weights nothing. You want some weight to mix paints better
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures ah. Yea didn’t think about that😅 Thanks for the reply!

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Its been a little while since I last attempted but they tend to leak from the rim where the dropper insert goes into the bottle. I assume that its because I'm buying cheap bottles but I tried getting new ones and ended up running into the same issue.
@ShinXyres yes, that's due to the poor quality of the droppers. Honestly try the ones I'm telling you, I've been using them for years with zero leaks

@ShinXyres happy to help!!
I really appreciate your videos... but I simplified this process further... I threw them out and bought good paint in dropper bottles... lol
You are then missing out on some amazing colours from Citadel although I understand the sentiment
glass beads work better than steel bearings
Not for me but they are a good alternative
If you need to transfer the bottles maybe just buy anoher paint brand. Better brands and cheaper: AK interactive, Vallejo and possibly army painter fanatic
But I like Citadel paints, and unironically some of the colours are the absolute best in the market for their hue.
I don't want to miss on some AMAZING paints so I choose to transfer them which takes almost no effort and makes my life easier
There are plenty of ranges that do come in dropper, if you hate flip top bottles. I just don’t get the need to do this.
Personally, I really dislike dropper bottles and prefer not to have to buy them. However, when I find a paint I really like, but it comes in the wrong type of bottle, I just put up with it. Life’s too short to start transferring paint to new bottles.
You do you. I use very precise mixes for my paints, specially for the videos and I love the ability to dispense drops of paint.
I also happen to love Ciatdel paints, so why not?
I just use a plastic syringe - much less messy!
I prefer to avoid extra tools to clean myself if I can
Didn’t State of play do this exact video a year ago?
A lot of channels have done this video before, but people keep asking so I'm sharing my own method.
🤣🤣 Nope, mine’s not the same. And Juan is correct there’s loads of “transfer citadel” videos on YT. There’s only a few ways to do this job. Some will be similar. Keep up the great work Juan!!
@thestateofplay2023 thanks mate 😘
: )
😘
Inlibe everything about that thumbnail
Thanks
Just get pipettes people, it's much easier
I personally don't agree but use what works for you. That's always my advice
Step 1: Don't buy overpriced Citadel paints.
Done!
I LOVE Citadel and some of the colours they make are the absolute best in their hue.
GW: because we hate our customers
Not really, their reasoning behind using pots it's understandable.
