Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Sega. It was released in Japan for the PlayStation 4 in March 2018, and is scheduled to be released worldwide in September 2018, in addition for the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a strategy game in the style of the first three games in the series. It introduces a new soldier class known as the Grenadier, who can fire mortar rounds at enemies. If allied soldiers are present to provide battlefield information, they can fire without being seen by hostile forces.
The Brave system is implemented, which is used when an allied soldier is downed and is nearly dead. When it's used, players can consume 1 CP and increase the stats of allied units with the "Entrust" skill or can restore 1 AP with the ability to move and attack while being invulnerable for one action with the "Stand Up" skill. - Hry

I dunno that Valkyria Chronicles really counts as an older RPG since it debuted on PS3. I'm still waiting for a new Skies of Arcadia or, I dunno, Shining Force (not Resonance, which is a different branch of the Shining series) or Sakura Taisen.
I'd have said the OG Phantasy Star series, but that ended on an extremely high note and pretty darn conclusively.
If you like Valkyria Chronicles, do check Mordheim: City of the Damned. The devs openly mentioned that they were inspired by Valkyria Chronicles for that game.

Did you play this game? Are we playing the same game? Because it looks an awful lot like you tried to read a bunch of articles talking about things in the game and took a bunch of gameplay footage from elsewhere and tried to put your own spin on it.
I'm so glad this series is not only back, but on every console! SEGA has been doing so much good this generation

Sega is on fire. Shining Resonance in July, Shenmue and Yakuza in August and now Valkyria Chronicles in September. I don't think they have been this active in a loooooong time.
Think I should get Shining Resonance? I have Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Shenmue HD.
Don't forget Shin Sakura Wars which they haven't completely revealed yet.

It always confuses me when people talk about Sega as being dead, or going in the wrong direction whenever a mediocre Sonic game comes out, considering that they've been pretty consistently throwing out some of the best titles of all time in multiple genres and on most consoles, especially after acquiring Atlus. Sure, they goof up sometimes, but their good waaaaaay outshines the bad in terms of games they are releasing.
Now to just convince them to either let Sonic rest for awhile so that they can show some love to their other IPs, or, I dunno, have Platinum remake Sonic and the Black Knight (or possibly a compilation of both Storybook games). And release official localizations of Valkyria Chronicles 3, The Sega Ages Phantasy Star remakes, Phantasy Star Nova, and Phantasy Star Online 2.

Admittedly, Valkyria [Edit: Revolution] is a pretty mediocre [Edit: game], but I think it could have been great with the melee cooldown system from Shining Resonance and significantly overhauled pacing. It's more like a season of a decent anime, with short bursts of gameplay every episode.

All I need to know is it's similar to the original VC, doesn't have micro-transations and I'll buy it.
The Gunman No micro transactions. Free DLCs are Japanese Voice Pack and some decals for your tank. Other than that there was a preorder bonus containing two missions relating to Squad 7 from the first game and another special mission. Don't have any season pass or other DLCs and preorder bonus might be sold at a later date.
Gameplay is similar to VC 1 using the Blitz system.
You can go ahead and start buying 😉

Did you beat it yet? I played it off of now and beat it yesterday. Best RPG I've ever played. Usually I play RPGs for the story and dont really love the turn based combat systems which usually amount to speed menu scrolling. But this game was wow... and I'm immediately going into 4 now

I'm planning to get VC4 at some point. Just not now since I want to prioritize some other games I've just purchased like Dragon Quest XI and the upcoming XC2 Torna DLC.
I've played through VC2 and VC3. I could not enjoy those games because of the excess grinding those games needed. I'm so glad VC4 went back to its roots with VC1 which I heavily enjoyed.

I get my rpgs on switch and my other games elsewhere. Definitely getting this on switch since this is one of the few games that look the same across all platforms. Is it anyway to disable the faded borders?
I finished VC1 last night... there was an unavoidable loss of life during a cut scene that actually made me cry. I lost 3 side characters, always near victory when it felt like I had invested too long to start over. One, Aika, I felt pretty sad about losing. Seeing this game is revered to the same kind of quality, in characters and gameplay, definitely downloading right away. I much prefer this style of squad command over Xcom, even if Xcom is probably the more hardcore strategy game. I really like the direct control over characters in combat. VC rocks that shit

as much as you are good with reviews and as much as I like your content, you should really try to not give up soooo many spoilers, you usually spoil a lot of the best secrets, scenarios, maps and even endings on your reviews and thats the main reason I always think it twice or thrice before watching your video reviews.... id recomend trying not to show THAT much for those who havent played the game but are also looking for a good solid opinion as yours

I've never played a Valkyre game before, but this anime style alternate WW2 kinda has me interested.
In the original VC & VC2 tanks COULD be taken out by normal weapons... provided you hit them in their weak point, namely the glowing area in the rear. The Lancers (bazooka wielders) could potentially one shot a tank if (big if) they could get around to that weak point without being seen. In the original game the Engineer was considered almost OP, which is why they divided that class up in VC02.
I still haven't decided what system to get it for. So far I'm leaning toward the Switch.

Since Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition doesn't come out until January, I'm going to have my aunt get me this game for my birthday instead. And when I think about it, this will be one of two Sega-published JRPGs I'll be getting for my birthday (the other being Shining Resonance Refrain).

Liked this game when it was on ps3 sad thing was never got round to playing it. Other games got in the way and the fact that ps3 was about more flexible with its options compared to ps4. Anyway hope to play this but at a cheaper price as I'm currently playing a backlog of games and can't help but play multiple routes on some of them. Spidey is out and I still haven't got round to god of war yet. Not a bad time to be a gamer is it Sega man.
madness . There's been some rough times depending on some people's outlooks. Since I've been through a good few gens I've seen the ups and downs. Here's just one bad time, when Sega stopped production of consoles. More recently is a touchy subject for some. It's a argument I care not for. It's never been a smooth road. Anybody gaming knows this.

Individual character development and stories was one of the few things VC2 did better then the first game. I'm glad to see that four follows suit. I just hope those soldiers are less cliche.

Two points here
1. Strategy games will leave your soldiers blank on purpose so that way you can create your own stories for them. A prime example is XCOM
2. Valkria doesnt even do the who bland soldier thing. Each soldier in valkria 1 had a unique personality and goals. I remember reading the bio of one of my snipers and turns out he had a massive crush on another female sniper. So when he died to a nazi scout i was heartbroken and restarted the mission from scratch just so that one day he could finally get with the girl sniper he liked.
I understand that as a reviewer your playing alot of games really fast and cant stand to remember small details. But this along with a bunch of other inaccurate statements pointed out by other commenters leads me to disregard every thing you say.
It seems VC4 back to having many soldiers in your party, with each member have their own unique job... I prefer VC with much less soldiers but every each of them have much more depths and have access to all jobs.
I’m leaning on the PS4 since I’ve played the original on the PS3. But I kinda want to get it on the switch too. This decision is so hard. Any thoughts?

Real question is are scouts still OP? I loved VC1 but the ranking system promoted scout rushing and by the end of the game the scout is so powerful its the only class you need.
No lie; that was my favorite class. I could solo a light tank with a scout!

Original VC was awesome, so im really looking forward to play this one. However, this looks literally the same, come on, after so many years they should have improved it more.
Looks isn't everything though. I like it when a game series at least tries to keep consistency with its presentation.
Dang, I know it isn't for everyone, but I'm still a little disappointed how underrated this game is. Personally, I would honestly put it up there with God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2. The story, animation, and combat are just so amazing!

At 8:12 thats how a lot of the cutscenes in the other games were there were a few actual cutscenes but most of the time it was like this.
How does this game differ from the others. I don't see any big improvements from the other games. Honestly it looks the same and I expect more after so long.
not much differant its a merge of valkria chronicles 3s systems and 1s systems 1s classes and the new 1 big open maps and orders and 3s combat rules so the tank isnt slow as mollases costing 1cp but has limited ammo to compensate(that means no commando no tech no fencer no anthem no auto sniper rifle)

I think im the only person who found this style of gameplay boring. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'd like it to be Battlefield, or The Division style of gameplay. But this style of turn based game is just boring to me. I would've preferred the option to move how I want, without limited steps, and just keeping everything else the same. Maybe a time limit to end turns instead.

WW2 had clear and obvious villains? really? Mind clearing that up for me? Are you talking about the British and French government starving Germany with post WW1 sanctions to the point of allowing a madman like Hitler to rise to power? or maybe about Stalin and his communist horror-shop? Perhaps of the allies shooting or burning German tank crews alive after they had surrendered? Maybe the colonial armies committing unspeakable atrocities on civilians? I hate to have to tell you but Hitler and the SS were not THE (only) villain in WW2... in truth there was no villain and no hero (or rather plenty of both on all sides) much like in any other war, only the stupidity and brutality of war itself.
I'm sorry to bring this discussion up on a fantasy game review but certain statements just give me the chills, because they seem to imply we have learned nothing from the past or that we have already forgotten and that is a disturbing thought to me...

The empire is not Nazi germany, its a mix of many different natins, peoples and technology. it has more in common with pre ww1 russia or the roman empire if you really want to get into it, its a federation of feudal monarchys for example, not a faschist dictatorship, remember that. the only thing the war in VC has in common with the real world war is that its set in a simmilar technological era (even tho its a little earlier, we dont have planes for example). it ofc has a lot of simmilar themes and events (Northern cross is basically a discount operation Barbarossa, but there we have it again, OUR side, the one we play as, the on that has most simmilarites with america or britain, conducts an operation very akin to one of the third reich. VC always takes hidtorical references and events and mixes them arround very generally and with no regard to adhere to the real thing that influenced it (examples: empire has russian terrain and size as well as tankdesigns, their weapons/uniforms and naming schemes are austrian/german or again russian (i mean, look at crymeria.) etc, etc.) but thats a good thing i feel^^
so in conclusion, PickBit is right, you and DreamcastGuy are wrong. If you dont like it, sorry, but the facts speak for him and his position. How you interpret that is ofc up to you, but please use the facts to argue that^^
