Scientific method, absolutely. The tragedy is that the Royal Society of New Zealand, itself doesn’t know what the scientific method is. Extraordinary since its parent - the Royal Society founded about 1650, established essentially what the scientific method is - “Upon the word of no one”.

This is exactly what is needed at this time. Intelligent professional people prepared to talk truth in the face of distorted facts and outright lies.
It seems to me that those who are attempting to destroy our founding document are going unchallenged by those who should be leading the charge and presenting the actual facts of the matters under attack.

Academic Freedom Survey 2023 by the Free Speech Union Executive Summary.
The proportion who are very or somewhat comfortable to discuss each are:
    1. Religion 63%
    2. Politics 62%
    3. Sexual Orientation 54%
    4. Sex and Gender 50%
    5. Race 45%
    6. Treaty/colonialism 41%
In all areas, at least one in three academics were loath to discuss issues in those areas. With issues around race, colonialism and the Treaty, fewer than half are comfortable.
The results here should be treated cautiously as the sample sizes can be quite small, but generally what we found in terms of freedom to discuss unpopular or controversial ideas:
    • Female academics felt more free than male academics
    • Younger academic felt more free
    • European academics felt less free
    • Academics whose political orientation was very left or left felt much more free than academics
    who were centrist or right.
    • Lincoln academics felt most free and AUT least free but again this is based on small sample sizes • Professors felt less free than other academics
    • Academics in the business and science disciplines felt less free

I’m in a tertiary institution which is now under the umbrella of Te Pukenga, and as far as I’m aware, we haven’t been asked to do the survey. Was it just universities? The polytechnic sector would be useful to survey as well.

"Taonga' now means the claiming of "fisheries" "languages" and "artifacts" and other "treasures" whereas in the Maori dictionaries of 1840 composed by Thomas Kendall in 1820 with the assistance of Chiefs Waikato and Hongi Hika the word "taonga" meant "property acquired by the long spear." A reference to the whalers using a long spear. It later became fashionable for Maori to use the word "taonga" or "property" in reference to acquiring European trade goods. The 1850 English translation of the Treaty in English named the Text in English came to interpret this very meaning. Thus the original text in Maori defines 'Taonga' as property not as fisheries.

"Ki nga rangatira, ki nga hapu" and "wenua o ratou" used in the original treaty document could be interpreted as "to the chiefs, to the tribes" and "the latter land." The original treaty therefore could be interpreted to cover only those areas of New Zealand that were directly inhabited by Maori at that time.
The Act of 1975 deleted those nine words and the Labour Government under Matt Rata ministerial role altered the treaty to "guarantees ownership of all land to all the Maori people in New Zealand. The Act of 1975 bears little resemblance to the document signed by Governor Hobson and the Maori chiefs of 1840.
