I'm eternally grateful my dedicated mother taught the fundamentals of english and mathematics through the use of synthetic phonics and rote learning.

Surely it is inefficient and expensive to have each school develop their own curriculum for the basic 3 R's?
All young people entering the workplace absolutely require this basic knowledge!.

Great interview, I watched the news item with Mr Luxon in a school they interviewed a couple of kids who said exams would be a good idea, a little bit of competition amongst students is a good thing, it gives them pride in themselves for having done a good job and will encourage them to want to turn up everyday. Yes Nina, great person doing great work.

And when a year 4 student doesn't want to do maths or finds it hard, can go sit on a bean bag with an iPad and watch youtube. Facts !!
