MEGA AURORA On The Isle Of Skye - Life In Our 1840s Cottage - Ep74

- čas přidán 15. 06. 2024
- Willie, Sarah and their dogs Jack Spaniels & new puppy, Nori, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.
In this episode, the Skye Lifers welcome Sarah's family to the island and head to the local music festival to check out some Scottish bands, as well as enjoying the most incredible aurora display of a lifetime!
Plus, as the summer sunshine comes out, we make the most of it by getting outside to give our compost bin a lick of paint and forage for some wild ingredients along the glen.
And Willie has some new gadgets to get to grips with in our boat, Betty.
Thanks for watching & see you in the next video!

Sarah, Willie, Jack & Nori x
Amazing! No Sunday is complete without you guys!❤
Thanks so much!!
Well Willie I am surprised that you would use a fish finder as you are so conscience about being fair and good to animals. I believe fishing and hunting are fine if you eat and use whatever you get for food. No problem!! I raised my guys this way OR donate to homeless shelters that use deer meat etc. ( we had places that did which I loved this idea. ) But it just doesn't seem sporting /fair to have technology that finds the fish. The old way is maybe you will catch some maybe you won't. Gives the fish a sporting chance. When my husband bought a fish finder I asked him if that's not CHEATING? I KNEW he wouldn't change but somehow you are so much more sensitive to right and fair play I did think you would oppose using them.
@@Cecelia-zp9qd Hi Cecilia I think you are being a bit harsh on a couple who are trying their best to live with nature and only take what they can use. Sarah even left that bug in the Cuckoo spit (probably wouldn’t taste very nice in her mint tea anyway). But I will forgive you as, because like most folk, you probably don’t understand (just like I didn't at one time) exactly what a fish finder like this one actually does. It reports what the sonar sees in a vertical line directly below the boat every milli second of so. And if there is no fish there then it won’t show any. Many folk think that a fish finder will tell you there is a shoal of fish are half a mile away but that is just not true. So if you are not at the right place at the right time and there are no fish directly below the sonar it will never ever ‘find any fish’. A misnamed sonar in my opinion! A depth gauge would be a better name.
Last week Willie caught a couple of Pollock’s without using a Fish Finder and this week with one he caught ……….0
But Willie did explain that it will help him as it shows the exact depth of water and what the bottom is like (if you are moving/drifting). It is so helpful to know this before throwing over your lobster pots say in possibly deeper water than you have lines for and or hopefully stop you losing them on very rough ground!
@iain-xf7sp I wasn't being harsh at all. I wasn't mad or even upset at Willie but expressing my opinion ONLY, that I was surprised. I ve always appreciated his and Sarah's kindness. I believe you are judging my comment harshly ,as I have a right to express my feelings ESPECIALLY in the nicest way. Also OVER 90 % of the times I have expressed positive things to them both. Even wrote a poem for jack and I m not even a dog person but I love jack. I didn't tell Willie what he Should or shouldn't do, like he shouldn't have one ,but just expressed my thoughts. I m glad my husband has a boat and enjoys fishing, he s worked hard and enjoys it. Thank you for the info on finders AND I guess it's great to find depths for his pots. But I do think the fish should have a chance to make it more sporting. I would feel differently IF a family was starving and NEEDED to know where they were. PS I ve enjoyed fishing many years and was the last to go with my Hero grandfather before he passed. ( no fish finder.. ) I have AWESOME memories of fishing ( no finders) with my son in the ocean not long before he went to Heaven at just 20! We caught a MESS of red snappers and we went back to the beach house and They cleaned them and I fried them , made fresh slaw and huspuppies. Delicious supper!!
Hi, thanks for your comment.
I see your point, but a fishfinder is a tool that mainly determines depth, which is a very important safety tool. It really does help with throwing pots too, as the other poster kindly mentioned.
But also… where is the line drawn on taking advantage of technology? Is a fishing rod an unfair advantage? A geared fishing reel? Invisible, nylon fishing line? An engine, or indeed, the boat I’m in?
If I wanted to, I could jump in the water wearing nothing at all, and wrestle the fish with my bare hands, but I don’t think I’d enjoy it as much, and I’m certain our viewers wouldn’t! 🙂
Sarah, I actually really appreciated your narration of the festival, all the while avoiding copyright issues. A change from the usual, visual but auditory too. Great post. Thanks to you and Willie.
Aww thanks so much Claudia! I didn’t know if it would be interesting or not 😅 I would definitely recommend checking out the bands if you can find them 😊👍
Can't get enough of the sounds of puppy feet running on wet ground!❤
Willie needs to headline at SkyLive!
Good luck convincing him to play!!
@@livingtheskyelife- Stagefright? Just tell him to picture everyone naked!!!!!
I just love the way you mix the video from one subject to another. Now I'm just an old old man, but Sarah you have the most beautiful eyes.
Your capture of the mega aurora on the Isle of Skye and life in your 1840s cottage is breathtaking. Your storytelling and appreciation for natural wonders bring joy and awe to your audience. Here's to more enchanting episodes. And I am Floating Village Life.
Full video as usual. Boating, music festival, Mega Aurora , puppies, foraging, herbal lesson and two wonderful people. 😊
OMG Spider - He is our Hero! What a call back for an old lady like me 😅
You guys are the best. Thanks for sharing your lives with us. You're living my dream. ❤❤
Fabulous video, the Aurora was spectacular !! Looked like great fun at the music festival, thank you for taking us along 😊Looking forward to your next adventure Love and hugs 🥰🥰 xx
Willie you can't beat a cup of builder's tea 😂 loving your channel guys 😊❤
Hi guys from sunny Kirkcaldy.
We're sitting opposite Kokushi having a lovely latte, and scones.❤
Wonderful shots of the Aurora (which my husband and I slept through😡) Lovely shots out on the water too Willie. Skye is a very beautiful place and look forward to your video every week. Thank you.
As a fellow musician(for the past 20+years) I can fully understand deciding to stay back at Skye Life cottage(although I did do a one off gig last weekend) much love to you guy’s, you’re amazing and you make our weekend🙏🎶
What a plethora of interests including the wonderful once in a life time Aurora thank you
Good to paint the compost bin a darker colour.... when the sun does come out the darker colour is better to absorb the heat and help the composting process. Will check out some of those bans you listened to as well!
I love how Jack always listens very attentivly whenever one of you is talking about something.😉
Skye is such a beautiful place.
Sunday greetings from Bavaria
Ahaha we love that too!! Nori does it sometimes but not as much as Jack 😅
Very entertaining as usual and nice to see your family Sarah. The aurora was wonderful. Hope you catch something in the pots Willie. Stay safe and I like the new dingy.
It's amazing that the whole world got to watch them as here in Alaska we see them often . 🎉❤
Love Sundays with you! The festival looked like fun! The northern Lights, as we call them, were stellar!
Love the dogs romping in the water. Fishing looks fun.
Another lovely Sunday. Thank you ❤️😎
I was so chuffed to see the Aurora right in my front yard here in Salem, Oregon! That music festival looked like tons of fun. Cheers, and ATB!
We once marked a trivia quiz at a pub in London for the table next to us, and one of the questions was what was another name for the 'Northern Lights', and their answer was Blackpool!!
Thank you for mentioning that an aurora is better captured by camera. I know folks who were disappointed by what they saw by eye, and this helps explain why.
It’s very different seeing it person - still breathtaking in a different way though 😊
What an incredible view from the fishing boat😮..wow!
I missed the Aurora also , I was out in the garden that night but instead of looking up I was looking down trying to catch the pesky slugs that are the bane of my life 😂
The May Aurora Borealis display was exceptional this year and was even visible in Romania where I live although I didn't see it myself. After a cooler Spring than usual, it's warming up nicely now, rising to 35C later this week 🔥🌞😎
Superb as always, festival looks amazing x Love hearing the cuckoo in the background ❤
Hi, Sarah and Willie. Thank you for sharing the outdoor Skyelife music. The Aurora Borealis was amazing. See you next week❤️❤️❤️❤️
How fun to take your parents to a concert . Congrats on the little rubber boat! Ohhhh and that Aurora- so fortunate to see that. Have a great week.
Yes, we appreciated it!
Lovely video, lovely weather. Thank you for a fun time with laughs included. Just took our 2 granddogs home after staying with us a few days (Golden and German Shepard) so needed more dog fix with sweeties Jack and Nori. Hope your summer continues for many more days!!
Your videos are always such a joy to watch. Just what I needed after a really stressful week of travel chaos! The dogs continue to be adorable; I can't believe Nori is the same size as Jack already! That's just wild!
I didn't catch the Aurora, sadly, but I'm grateful for the beautiful images you shared and I'm crossing my fingers for next time there's a solar flare at the right time of night.
Great video. Thanks! So reassuring to see lifejackets being worn. A kill cord would really make my day. Thanks again!
Such a fun video! Our spaniels also love nothing better than “ponding” ; mucking about in puddles and ponds then sharing their love and enthusiasm by jumping up on my clothes. Dark sturdy overalls/dungarees are well worth their cost. This spring was special over on this side of The Pond too with the Northern Lights and the full eclipse on display. I can’t say they were once in a lifetime events as this old woman saw both when I was growing up back in the day.
The Aurora was spectacular !!
Nice TMBG throw-away line from Willie at the end! Lots of fun as usual and glad you folks got to see the aurora!
Firstly,those crab cakes looked incredible.
And yea,I appreciate the mint tea,at least it is whole leaf steeping.
Technically,that is not tea,it’s a tisane,which is a steeped plant material,but not tea leaves.
And that’s great!
As long as it’s not a tea bag,if you knew where the tea dust that is in a tea bag comes from, you would be horrified.
The Aurora.
That is the Sun,Giving his third child a little kiss.
Always remember this,as it will indeed happen again in our lifetime.
😊
Oh NO this video didn’t last long enough…was so enjoying it, from the festival, to the Aurora (which we saw here in Cumbria on the 10th May), to the painting of the compost box and the fishing in the beautiful waters with the spectacular scenery. Truly gorgeous and the dogs having a great time too. Thank you Willie and Sarah,🏴
Love the sound of the Cuckoo in the background. I have been photographing them locally this spring. Also came across 1 Corncrake this spring, first time even hearing it.
Looked like you had a good time with the family but Willie had the once in a life time event too not to be out done tc both the oldies xx🤗🤗🤗🤗
So enjoy your video content every week
Aww thanks so much!!
Speaking of tea. My grandson came home from his camping trip, throwing his sweaty shirt in the wash basket. He'd only gone and left a bunch of tea bags in his shirt pocket, so when Mum put on the boil wash, she had a washing machine full of tea (which had split open of course) and stained the whole wash, so when we pop round for a cup of tea, I always ask "is this from the kettle, or the washing machine?"
Ahaha oh no!!
Thank you. You live life fully. Thank you for sharing.
We had the same Show in County Durham, it was absolutely amazing to see it with the naked eye
Happy Sunday everyone ❤
Nora is going to dig many escape holes! 🐶🐶🐶
Nori oooops
Thank you for wonderful video. Really enjoy all of it. ❤❤My sister and I have just been to Skye and went to Portree, Carbost and the Fairy Pools (loved the sound of the water and the scenery there ) And the Scottish midges are far worse then our South African mozzies!!! Got bites on my face and neck in a few minutes and they didn’t touch my sister 😨
At my old place I used to grow my own mint and fresh mint does make the best tea.
Thank you for sharing your adventures ♥️ enjoyed the video 😊
How smashing to see the sunshine! It's mid June and I feel like I'm constantly wearing a cagoule!
Hands up if you think Willie should perform at next year's SkyeLive!
We miss the sunshine!! It felt so weird to be editing this, while wearing so many layers and lighting the log burner 🤣
Cool. Love seeing Scotland.
Great video again cheers.🍻🍻🍻👍
Lovely festival with Niteworks and Sian! So sad it was there last performance! But you were there!!
It was great to see them before they finished! I have seen them once before, at the Heb Celt festival (during which my friend convinced me to message Willie back 😜)
We call Juneuary , when it’s June but freezing cold.
So true!! The sun disappeared and we’ve gone straight to autumn 😫
Our Sunday tradition is to watch as a family ❤
Monday evening for us as we live in the future...New Zealand 🇳🇿
@@paulalaurie7935 love that…”we live in the future” 🏴
The flag iris area is stunning
Scotland is going to play in my city tomorrow! Best of luck 🤩 And sorry not sorry for the 5:1 on Friday 😜
im a brit and its coffee all the way for me lol
Amen!!
I’m desperate to know where you are fishing. I remember sailing around this coastline a while ago. I’m from Northern Ireland and I know that the west coast of Skye, above and below Talisker Bay is ridiculously like the Antrim Coast. Your cliffs are like Fair Head off Ballycastle. The Geography and Geology are identical. I guess you are between Eynort and Talisker. Not a breath….wonderful!
I think you should make Jack a bin of his own, he loves sitting in the compost bin lol.
Thanks Team Skylife… a lovely engaging watch 🤗🏴
It was a fairly incredible aurora even down in Devon. It really kicked off about 11:20pm and the naked eye view here was really good. Took some nice photos too. Last aurora I saw of this magnitude was back in 2003 from Cambridgeshire. This 11yr cycle solar maxima could be a good one, and we're still not there yet. Keep looking up!
We will indeed!
My dod used chicken pieces in his traps , I wonder if that could help? my pop pop, well he always caught a lot, his idea was to soak all your bait, worms and meat into beer overnight. although he did have a drinking problem,(pow) he did always come back with a net full and buckets full of fish, crabs and what ever else he caught. lol but that was here in Pa. or the jersey shore, I love fishing, have you ever made you're own lures?
Fabulous! All of it - including the festival. I love this kind of music so started watching Niteworks straight after watching Skye Life. You are so living the dream in your boat, Willie!
Beautiful!!
Just to mention, speaking from 25 or so yrs. of age ahead of you... glad you're thinking of sunscreen and sunglasses. Don't be in my shoes, had lots of visits to the derm dr. and had moles off. What you do today, yourself will benefit in 25yrs. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ love your vids
Ah no! Hope everything turned out ok for you 😊 We are very careful about sunscreen, even when we don’t get a lot of sun!
I'm doing well so far, drs are keeping a close watch on me i go for checkups, better safe than sorry 💞
Glad you are out enjoying the beautiful summer in the Hebrides, glorious place to live, lucky you two! Take care. Ps. My standard poodle sends hello to Jack and Nori :)
Happy Father's Day Willie
Haha thanks! He got some chocolate and gin, plus a big card from the boys 😊
The auroras were epic that day weren’t they. First time I have seen them so colourful by eye sight. Maybe because we are a lot further north but they were so bright even by eye. Normally they are so much duller. I agree with Willie it was such a special moment, I actually had tears in my eyes watching them dance around. So amazing. Loved the video too! The festival sounds lovely, not my thing… too crowded for my liking 🤣
Ahaha the crowds are ok as long as you know you can leave and go back to your peace & quiet afterwards 😊 We’ve never seen such strong aurora either! Absolutely incredible (even after the peak!)
@@livingtheskyelife yeah there is that. So true. Am definitely thankful for our Highland Sanctuary when we get back from busy places! We are so lucky to live in such beautiful places 😍🙏
Wow look at that blue sky! Lovely viewing - thank you.
Cracking yet again....have followed Niteworks for many years and sad that they are ending the music they do. They have done some great collaborations over the years with Sian etc one of my favs though is Gloomy Winter or Aiseag Maol Rubha. The lights were superb. Sunday might sorted yet again ta very muckle. 🤟🤟🤟🏴
You’re welcome! It’s sad to hear they are disbanding, but they definitely leave some great memories behind 😊
@@livingtheskyelife They did a really great version and vid of Simple Minds Themes for great cities during lockdown on CZcams well worth a listen 🤟🤟🏴🏴
We went to the Highland Games in Portree. ❤❤
Ah cool! We would love to go 😊
Great Aurora shots. We saw it down in the Midlands. Woke my kids up to see it too 😊
Amazing! So glad you got to see it 😊
Wonderful video 👍🐕🐕🦺
Yes I enjoyed it, many thanks. I have to say I was in Scotland in May and it was cold and wet, but I enjoyed every minute🥰
May was lovely compared to June…😅🥶
❤❤❤
Really enjoyed that.A mix of everything.Hope the good weather lasts.Beautiful Aurora.❤❤❤
I sympathise with you Sarah - we were at home in West Lothian and could easily have popped out to see the aurora, woke up to our neighbours pictures of it on FB! 😭
Ah nightmare!! We managed to catch the end of it after leaving the festival, but gutted to have missed the full corona 😫
Another beautiful video - what great weather and aurora! Maybe a painting of a bee on yellow iris? Or whatever subject calls to the artist. ❤
Could you send the summer down south. It seems to have decided to stay with you this year😅 x
Ahaha we work a couple of weeks behind with our footage, so it’s currently grey rainy and cooollldd here too!
@@livingtheskyelife snap! We think we have gone through a time machine and skipped to late october. Beautiful shots of aurora though x
Brilliant!! as always! Love everything you do!! Excellent💖 Sending Lotsaluv too You Both and Jack and Nori 😍 Enjoy the Sun, we're in winter here brghhh! Happy Days 🤣🤣 Carol xx n.z.
Think we are in winter too … having dreadful rainy and cold weather in North of England.
Loved the aurora shots ❤️, we missed it here so glad that you got to see it and you shared it. Also thank you for the occasional night sky image you include on other episodes - you have great dark night sky.
Beautiful views from your fishing boat! Nothing better than fresh mint tea. So happy for my Sunday viewing of Skye Life.
Willie that light show was a celestial encounter, very beautiful. I live in NYC and would love to see the Aurora borealis. I hope one day to travel to a country in the north to see this spectacular event. I went to Juneau Alaska one year but unfortunately the show was not on display the time I visited🤨😏😁 , as always I appreciate your video, great week to Willie, Sarah, Jack spaniels and Nori (? Is Nori's second name spaniels also😂😜) see you guys next Sunday❤💞
Nori is like Madonna - no last name required (except at the vet, when he is a Scott 😜)
Thanks for another great Video.❤ One thing I noticed, you need to include poor Nori in your channel description.😃
Oh no! We thought we had got them all 😅
Love your videos, have been thinking of coming to Skye by public transport, quite tricky. I managed to see the northern lights from my village in Lancashire, I had a notification, looked outside and seen a little, but as soon as I took a photo wow, my dream was to see the northern lights in Norway or Sweden and seen them from my back garden epic. ❤️❤️🐶🐾💙
Thank you! Yes, Skye is quite difficult to navigate by public transport, but there are a few places you can get to by bus and there are taxis / private tours you can take. Have you tried The Chaotic Scot on FB? She specialises in travelling Scotland on public transport 😊
@@livingtheskyelifeI will check that out, thank you. ❤
We normally fish closer to the clifts we look for cabbage or seaweed,. And fish at tide change 😋 😆 just what we do on Alaskan oceans 😉
I would love to know what is going through Noris mind 😂 the iris are beautiful, my favourite flower. I wish I was in that boat , I love the sea and fishing. Hope you get lots of lobster and crab .
Oh gosh - so do we sometimes! And other times maybe we’d rather not know what he’s thinking haha 😅
Your videos are so good, they simply fly by!
Aww thanks so much!!
Too true🏴
Well that was an amazingly busy week in your lives! Glad you got the Auroras up there too definitely worth seeing! Hoping that weather comes back soon! 😂🌧️have a lovely week u 4 x
You guys really are the best people on CZcams , great content every week , how channel haven’t approached you on your own series I will never know
Aww thanks so much haha! 😊
Wow what a brilliant music festival! And such an amazing light display. Thank you for all the extra interesting information you always add in to your videos I learn something new every week!😊
Thanks so much! So glad you’re enjoying them 😊
Sarah, your hair looks gorgeous so loose and curly 😊
Aww thanks so much!! 😊
Proper mint lol canny Sarah you should have put a little cheeky “ ho “ after it lol great video guys well done and thank you 🙏
Thanks for introducing me to Niteworks! I've been learning Gaelic, so finding new music with Gaelic lyrics is always really awesome!
Those crabcake rols look jammie!! With your own caught crab!!
They were gooood!!
Hmmm wild mint, northern lights, music with the folks and all the highjinx the pups can offer, wow.
It was nice getting out on the water. Hopefully there will be some good catches.
Years ago I found the pepperyest mint by my local river. It grows like a weed and can root in water or soil.
I can’t wait to see what happens next week.
Lovely video as always. Lucky you we didn't get much of the Aurora here in Denmark. Sadly I didn't see it. Got my Wild deo last week so now I smell of Gorse flowers 😂 Sorry didn't get it via Wild in UK but from a Danish compagny so I didn't have to pay an extra 25% Danish Vat on it. ❤
Thanks so much!! Glad you’ve started enjoying Wild - love the gorse reference haha!
Great video as always. Compost bin looks great. Enjoy the fish finder Willie hope it helps you catch a good one. Sarah, we used to call that spit on the mint "birdies spit". We have it on some of our wild flowers over here in Canada and hubby always laughs at what we called it.😂 Have a great week.❤
I like my tea black no sugar.
My other half likes hers with a drop of milk.
We'll enjoy our cuppa all the more now that we've managed to get a couple of Sarah's stunning mugs.
We've been waiting for a Coo one for ages so finally got one and a Sheep one 😊
We could see here Down here south east England fist time for us it was fantastic the best xxxx❤❤❤❤❤❤ thank you Williand Sarah xxxx ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
