  • Willie, Sarah and their dogs Jack Spaniels & new puppy, Nori continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.
In this episode, the Skye Lifers take a look at the aftermath of the fires that recently lit up the night sky across the island - finding out how they spread out of control and just how close they got to people's homes.
Plus - more seemingly simple jobs on Yolanda, our Landrover Defender, turn out to be more difficult than we hoped and Sarah is again in search of her elusive quarry - the otter that sometimes appears outside our cottage in the sea loch below...but will she find it this time?!
Thanks for watching & see you in the next video!

I hear that millions of years ago, Scotland's mountains were once part of our Blue Ridge Mountains. It seems strange that a week after Skye's mountains were on fire that our local Blue Ridge Mountains were ablaze. Crazy winds ignited long dead controlled burn piles. Our County is also volunteer firefighters, and they fought like never before. Grateful to the firefighters worldwide. They're a unique breed and brave beyond all belief.

    1. What, no Richard in the end credits? (Richard - himself...)
    2. Fires - in the south of France where I live, wildfires are a big problem (for houses) but interestingly, for the land, it recovers pretty quickly and nature soon makes sure that regrowth happens quickly. Not a reason to discard cigarettes though, obviously!
    3. Otters or seals, I couldn't see, but either way it was beautiful
    4. Yes, indeed, Willie should keep jumping off camera like a bunny, chipmunk, or whatever. It is hilarious!

That was otterly amazing! I'm pretty sure those were 2 otters mating - it is Spring, after all!
I remember seeing the beautiful 1969 film- 'Ring Of Bright Water' (you can watch it free on youtube)- about the artist and writer, Gavin Maxwell, who ended up living on Skye - and there is a scene in that film, where Mij his pet otter is frolicking and splashing in the loch, just like that, with a wild female otter. They are such playful animals. What a magical way to start your day.

Liked your bit on muir burns this week. Just thought I’d mention that there are some whole time staff in our highland and island areas and remote rural. Usually a support officer and a station commander looking after several stations and personnel. In some places we have other admin staff to support all crews. I have just recently retired as one of the Station commanders and initially served in an urban area prior to promotion and taking up a rural post. Very interesting and gratifying experience.

I live in northern New Mexico, USA. We worry about wildfire all of the time. My town, Los Alamos, has had to be evacuated twice since 2000. And while I get tired of the cold and snow, which can continue until June, it is great for preventing fire. We now have a policy of Ready, Set, Go in case of fires. Two years ago we stayed in the Set stage for two weeks.

So I'm just praying that no telephone poles get knocked over, which is what happened in 2011. They opened the town up too quickly, because there were still fires on the mountains surrounding the town when I drove back.

Wild fires are so frightening. We've had several over recent years. The worst took out over 350 homes in one neighborhood. There's nothing you can do, but watch it go up in smoke. I admire the smoke jumpers who fight the fires in mountain locations, but sometimes the winds make the fight so much more difficult. It's heartbreaking.
Its too bad the otters didn't come closer, but that's nature for you. They were certainly having fun! Until they're five feet away and standing still, I wouldn't know if its an otter or a seal. 🤷 Colorado is a little short of both critters.

Me too - also love Sea Otters. Last year we went all the way to Alaska to see them - cuteness on a whole other level! A bit bigger than the river otters we get in Scotland - and they have back flippers rather than legs so never leave the sea - but they are just as playful. We saw some rescued ones up close in Vancouver Aquarium - gorgeous!

    I have a first,also,and lastly for you.
    First:
That rotary tool that started to smoke,it’s something that happens after a few years, after accumulating dust, best to give it a good blowing down every so often.
Plus, those long flexible attachments, they are very hard on the motor, the more coiled up,the more taxing on the tool’s motor it will be.
    Also:
    Your friend,Richard.
I say this as a mighty compliment to him.
He is CLEARLY a Middle Earth Dwarf from the mountain Moria,he comes along once in a while to fix.
That’s what the Mighty Dwarves do🤣😅
    Lastly:
    Otters.
The Otters(they are not seals, seals don’t make that sound),I cherish them,I hope to be an Otter one day!
Sara,if you end up making a painting of an Otter,I would be honored to purchase a print of it.

It takes an artist eye to see the small things! Good job, Sarah! I was thinking, at one point, that the ‘otters’ looked like seals because of the fatter bodies when they jumped, but it’s hard to tell. So glad to see that no people or property was harmed in the fires. We have experienced them in my valley every summer for the past five years. One is still burning underground from last year, in a few areas. We can see the water planes practicing already in the valley for the coming season andI fear that it is something we will be living with now. Stay safe and continue to enjoy your lovely home and adorable pups.

Hey 🙂 for anyone who possibly never watched far enough - these fires are from Falaisger (also known as muirburn. The burning of the heather) and it is done predominantly by land management in scotland from around Oct-April. The intention is to allow for regeneration of the area for wildlife mainly. The trouble is sometimes it gets into deep peat and causes a much larger burn than anticipated or wind catches and it hits areas that werent intended. The practice is meant to be avoidant of certain areas (steep slopes for example). There is a scottish Muirburn code and some courses land managers should be following as well as licence holding.
Just thought id add this as I lived in Dunvegan for 4 years and we saw this often from our house over the years!

We are waiting for enough rain so we can burn the broken branches that are too big and awkward to mulch. In New Zealand we are not allowed to burn in a city and a lot of townships at any time, rural areas have to wait until fire restrictions are lifted, we only burn in the Autumn to winter, and sometimes in spring if it's a tiny heap. Fire can be a useful tool to remove dead clumps of grass, it causes the seed to germinate.

Oh wow, that fire was really close to these houses! I'm so glad it stopped there and nothing was damaged. That must have been so scary for the people living there!
I'm not surprised Richard is always wearing sunglasses. He clearly needs them so he can throw all this shade at you for your lack of suitable tools. 😂
He is a hero for always coming to your aid, though. If it wasn't for the fire risk and the need for people willing to camp out on mountains year-round, I would suggest building some beacons between your house and his so you can call for his aid in style.
Well done Sarah on figuring out the colours of the wires! How odd that they were bicoloured in the first place.
I always love your bloopers at the end!

Never thought about controlled burns in Scotland. Definitely a source of discussion here in the inland NW of the US. One of my favorite photos from my first trip to Scotland were the “witches brooms” along the side of the roads in the Highlands, and the requirements to stop and help put out fires. Lightning is a big cause of wildfires here; does it happen in Scotland too?

Wildfires are frightening wherever they are. In Australia we are very familiar with fires. Sometimes we have controlled burning which escapes and soon gets out of control.

Love the swimming creatures, whether otters or seals! What great diversity all around you! Here in the US we have started having more controlled burns due to the damage from some horrible wildfires that frequently burn out of control with much greater damage. It is good to have the regulations to follow to try and prevent anything from getting out of hand. Here also, many evergreens are helped to release seeds (via cones) through the burning. So glad that everyone on Skye is safe though after the March burns!
