- Today we are unboxing and testing out our brand new 18 HP Hangkai Chinese Outboard. We will show you what all comes in the box, how to fill the lower unit (foot) oil, and starting the motor up for the very first time. We were surprised to see her fire up on the first pull!
**And yes we know you add the lower unit oil through the drain plug.**

Oil is added from the bottom drain screw until it starts to drip from the top hole then you're filled. You're creating pressure the way you're doing it.
Yeah we figured that out when the Hangkai 12 manual showed the correct procedure. Much easier that way!
Yeah, that’s the only way to add oil. Otherwise you’ll be low on oil in the lower unit.
You are so right
Really appreciate these videos, thanks for posting.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
Two thumbs up ! Thanks for the advice on what not to do. I think you have a healthy self esteem to be able to post an honest video of how easy it is to make a mistake. I have made many mistakes and can sympathize with you. Keep up the good work brother!
I laughed when I watched it, so I figured it was worth leaving in. We had done 5 other lower units that way without any issues before figuring out that it was wrong. Thanks for watching!
@@HufflerGarage so the 5 other gearcases have blown pinions im assuming. its impossible to fill these from the top!
Fill oil from the bottom. Bleed air off from the top. That is also how you make sure you don’t trap air inside the lube out and verifys that it’s full when it spills out the top hole
completely honest she sounded great
Does this unit have an alternator in it that could charge a small 12 volt battery?
Can i charge a marine battery using the hangkai 18hp outboard motor? If i can, what parts would i need to make this happen? Thanks!
Huflfer. Wow-awesome .;)
You can bust the seals forcing air in the gear case your in the wrong hole as well...
I’m watching you and I will decide to purchase this or not haha I’m debating bro
they are normally shipped with gear oil
You have me sold on this motor. I have a 14ft jon boat with a 9.9. The old motor is just worn out and needs more than it's worth. A new Yamaha or Mercury is really expensive. Everything I have found for sale for used looks great in pictures, but is junk upon inspection.
All I need is something for about a 3-4 mile run to my fishing hole. Or a bit longer for hunting trips. But it seems as if this is a good motor for someone like me that is affordable.
I'd be careful with these. Reviews online seem to support that the motor will work for a few years, but all the peripheral stuff will fall apart (paint finish, fuel filter/lines, trim mechanism, tiller control, gaskets etc.). I saw one video where they put the throttle handle on backward.
Did it come with title to register it ??
Hey guys I just subscribed! Love your videos… I have a 9.8 foot Bris with a 6hp and love it, but with my wife on board it will not plane out. Sometimes I bring our 2 dogs with us when running out to shore. Was thinking about getting either the 12hp or 18hp? Will the 12 be enough or should I just get the 18? Let me know!! Thanks, Carter
That's the same situation we were in. Since the 9.8 FT BRIS has a HP limit of 10, I would go with the 12. We've been able to plane with the 12 on the 10 FT red dinghy with around 700 lb. total people and gear.
Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Haw do I get the air mixer screw out of my 6hp 2strok if the head has shared off ????
You could try using a bolt extractor kit to remove it or take it to a machine shop and have them remove it.
If all else fails you can get a replacement carburetor on Amazon for about $70: amzn.to/3XdSd28
Or eBay for $60: tinyurl.com/39vw8f68
I just stopped by to read the comments about filling the lower end with oil from the top vent hole...
Is it still working?
Just curious, but now that you have owned it for a little bit. What's your thoughts on it? Maintenace, reliability, and performance? Thanks
The only issues I've had so far is the latch that holds the cowl on doesn't hold to well in rough water (for now a small piece of tape over the end of the latch is "fixing" it, and the spring that holds the motor up when you pull it out of the water doesn't want to catch every time (It may just need to be adjusted, but it hasn't annoyed me enough to make time to take a look at it). So far, knock on wood, no mechanical issues, it runs like a top.
Performance is good. I upgraded my 11 FT inflatable dinghy from a 6HP to this 18HP and its a night and day difference. I've had it out on the ocean with about 800 lbs. worth of people, fuel, and gear and it was able to stay on plane and easily run around 20 MPH.
Amigo donde puedo comprar piezas de repuesto para estos motores cuando las nesesite
cool!
"Pew" lol 😂
LMFAO!!!! filling the lower unit!
Hi. Any idea what the difference is between the 15hp and 18hp. Carb jet size maybe?
I didn't realize they even made a 15hp. I found a listing on aliexpress that has a comparison of the 15 and 18 and it says the 15 (and 9.9) is 246cc and the 18 is 294cc, but Hangkai's website has the 18 listed at 246cc and doesn't have any specs for the 15.
for the tohastus, the 15 was 250cc and the 18 was 300 so completely different block.
I’m having trouble keeping it running while in idle. Any thought?
I would make sure the carburetor is adjusted to factory spec. I know the adjustment on the 6.0 idle screw is 1 1/4 turns out, but I'll have to do some research to figure out the adjustments on the 18. These motors seem to come out of adjustment easily.
Me too..but after some proper break in period according to the manual, mine begin to behave the way it should..this engine may be cheap but it is not a crap
What is that thing call that you put In the water below pipe
Outboard motor muffs
I have an aluminum 12’ boat with a Mercury 9.9 hp. Would this Hangkai 18hp work good for my boat?
Same question
@@clovm9810 it’s not a good motor. Slow, breaks easy, hardly anyone will work on them. Save your money buy a Mercury 20hp. One of the newer models not the old used one. Don’t waste your money on Hangkai
Did you buy one to know ? Every video I've seen is very happy people lol 😅
@@clovm9810 a friend of mine did. For a while it worked good but the 18hp they sell is more like a 12hp. It’s not that powerful of a motor. So when I saved up and bought my Mercury 20 I was talking to one of their technicians and he also bought one. Now he works on boat motors and he told me they are cheaply made, hard to get parts for them, and they don’t last long. Now I know how expensive new motors are. I paid 3600 bucks for a 2023 Mercury 20 but it was worth it. Powerful motor, runs great and parts are readily available to fix them if something should break. Add a jacking plate to your boat and you’ll have a fine motor.
Hi can this outboard be installed wit steering wheel kit?
Yes
Yes. It has the holes pre-drilled for a steering wheel. You'll need a Yamaha kit for the throttle and gear shift.
I decided to get the 12hp model.
Also a good choice. Our 12 finally came in today: czcams.com/users/shortsTAQjh-H3RsI
Have you used it in the cold any? Needing a new motor for my duck boat
🤭oil pressure FIRST pull start I can't fault these Hangkai engines I love my 6hp
is the power like Yamaha 15pk.
I don't have experience with the Yamaha, but this Hangkai has very nice power!
is the 18 hp really 2x the weight of the 12 hp?
It's close to it. We usually have to use 2 people to safely move it if we don't have an outboard dolly handy.
Are these even legal to use in the US / emissions?
no law on those
What year is that boat engine
It's a 2022 model.
Did it last long with use all summer ?
Yeah it still runs great. I just rode it 76 miles in saltwater this past weekend with no issues.
@@HufflerGarage Have you used it in the cold at all? Needing a new motor for my duck boat.
What is the shaft length?
40 cm (16 in.)
How much does that engine weigh?
It weighs about 50 kg/110 lbs.
@@HufflerGarage I think that it weighs about 36 kg not 50 kg, the Yamaha 15 hp 2 stroke which this engine is based on weighs 36 kg
Next time pump the gear lube oil from the bottom port until it comes out of the top one.
I ACTUALLY RAN MINE WITHOUT ADING GEAR LUBE TODAY THE INSTRUCTIONS DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ADDING GEAR OIL HOPEFULLY I DIDN'T MESS ANYTHING UP.😢
next time fill your lower unit from the bottom and have the top screw out , when it's full it just comes out the top. Good video still
You dont even take it on the lake! How fast? Cost?
you pump from the bottom not the top screw. that is how you blow a seal
you fill a lower unit from the bottom until it comes out from the top hole
He need to learn how to fill the lower unit.
Don’t listen to this guy because you don’t fill the gear lube from the top and you have to do a break in period when the engines brand new and don’t rev it up all the way when you haven’t done the break yet.
Must be embarrassing to show your face and do it totally wrong.
Uppside down with your oil addition
