  • A long-dormant volcano in Fagradalsfjall near Reykjavik in south-west Iceland flared to life on Friday night, spilling lava down two sides in the area's first volcanic eruption in nearly 800 years. Initial aerial footage, posted on social media by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, showed a relatively small eruption so far, with two streams of lava running in opposite directions

      The eruption isn't expected to be life threatening apparently, it's just big news because it's been 800 years since the last one. It's close to the capital city but not close enough to do any damage to any inhabited areas.

    Here in Hawaii we call this type of lava pahoehoe (pa-ho-eh-ho-eh). When cooled its smooth and easy to walk on. Unlike ‘a’ā (ah-ah) which is sharp, spiky and rubble like which makes it slow and tough to walk on when cooled.

      It's probably the Icelandic plates entering a new age. It only started with warning signs at January. It was relatively calm before with 1,2 magnitudal quakes, at max 3 mag but now its hit three to 5, if rare seven mag with no sign of rest. Literally 20k quakes in a week.

      @Ryan McRae Recent Icelandic eruptions haven't caused huge loss of life. Go back 250 years and about a quarter of the population of Iceland were killed by the direct and indirect effects of one eruption (Laki).
      It's unlikely that would happen again in the 21st century as we understand the hazards much better and can evacuate people much more effectively. That being said, it's unlikely we'll see a repeat of Laki from this current eruption.

    • @magnusbruce4051
      @magnusbruce4051 Před 3 lety

      @Ryan McRae Most of the human deaths were from famine, yes, which is an indirect effect, caused by half the livestock dying and almost all the crops failing.
      Fortunately, a disaster of that scale would be unlikely to happen in modern Iceland.
