  • A volcano on the Atlantic island of La Palma erupted on Sunday after a week-long buildup of seismic activity, prompting authorities to speed up evacuations for some 1,000 people. Footage obtained by the Associated Press showed plumes of black and white smoke rising up from the Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge, where scientists had been closely following the accumulation of molten lava below the surface

I'm from the biggest island of the 8: Tenerife. Here, the major threat for us is, of course, the Teide but there are plenty of other chances of possible eruptions; as in the rest of the islands. We know very well we live in a volcanic area and are aware about things like this could eventually happen in our islands but isn't the same of actually see it really happening. It's completely amazing and frightening at the same time. Although isn't my island where all this situation is taking place, we're neighbours (I even have relatives living in the eruption area but, fortunatelly, they're alright) and, as Canarian, I send all my support to La Palma and I'm also very glad of reading best wishes for it from around the world. Thank you so much everyone.

For those kindly wondering, there have been no casualties at all. Everyone has been evacuated safely. Pets and cattle too. Home insurances and car insurances cover volcano eruptions, so people will get the money back for those. The crops and agricultural soil are not covered, though. The govenment is expected to step in for that.
As for those questioning why build on the skirts of the volcano: the Canary islands are of volcanic origin. An eruption can happen anywhere in the islands. The entire Las Palmas is a volcano, essentially. There was no crater or mouth in that particular spot previously. It just happened that the magma accumulated under the crust and that is where it ended up breaking it and reaching the surface. It is impossible to predict on the long run! The volcano has opened 9 mouths in the middle of the hills, after 1 week of earthquakes. That is all the warning they got. We could also wonder why build on the shores of the Thames, where there can be floodings. No place is completely safe on the long run, guys.

this is a major exaggeration. The most likely event was going to be a landslide. An average everyday landslide of material from a small portion of the island that slid into the ocean. The tsunami was supposed to be around 5-6 meters high. That's it. Saying half the island COULD fall off, is like saying an earthquake COULD make California fall into the Pacific. Well, it hasn't yet, and there's been thousands of earthquakes, and quite a few that would make you wonder if this is it and it hasn't happened yet... I wouldn't go planning any evac routes just yet...

@@milels6917 there is nothing we can do about natural forest fires or volcanoes. These things are part of nature, what isn’t is our use of technology that was flawed in design which creates some of the most toxic and cancerous atmospheric disturbances in history. Exhibit A: The reliance on fossil Fuels for a nightmarishly large amount of necessities in modern living. In order to fix the climate we need to reinvent how our lives work, the things we eat, drink, and live around. Only then can it be completely safe to stop the reliance on fossil fuels. What I was suggesting in my first comment is fantasy future but a hopeful one. A scary thought is that if we were to achieve such a thing the majority of what we do in life would be what our ancestors were used to at least 300 years ago. That is how far back humanity would likely be plunged should all fossil fuels suddenly vanish without a replacement for the things we have now technologically. The climate mathematically is on track to becoming a sort of extreme desert like biome where it’s extremely hot during the day (at least 125 degrees Fahrenheit daytime) and possibly extremely cold at night or just what we consider a hot day today (either below freezing temperatures or 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
