Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 180: The Incredible Crash Dummies... or "Crash Test Dummies" if you prefer (not the 90s band). The game was published by LJN (on the NES) and was based on the cartoon, based on the public service announcements, based on the actual real-world crash test dummies that are used in car safety tests. This NES game was released in 1993 when the next gen systems were already in full swing. This game is for other systems too, like the SNES and Genesis, but The Nerd wanted to focus on the original Nintendo game by his least favorite game publisher.

Hi
Thanks man :)
Having 'Silver Surfer' on vinyl is probably the perfect midpoint between James the person and the Nerd character.
Is it an OST of NES game? How would that even work?
Krut Hawort he listens to it. It’s meant to be listened to
Even if the game leaves a lot to be desired, the soundtrack to it is legit kickass.
One Doomed Spacemarine dude Silver Surfer is unironically one of my favorite NES games. Found about it from the nerd all those years ago and I used to play the shit out of it
JtheBurger impressive 👏🙂

That Crash Test Dummies parody song cracks me up every time. Thank you Nerd.
@Squidgy Republic No it didn't. The version used in the movie was made my Matt Willis especially for that movie. While the version that AVGN made fun of was the original version by The Primitives released many years before Mr Bean's holiday.

AVGN at 6:33: _"Now, there's one thing about this game that you should probably know-and I bet you guessed already, because I've been holding my finger over this spot here for a reason. You know what's gonna happen: I'm gonna pull my finger away, there's gonna be some dramatic music, and... well... should I just do it?"_

Tell me about it. I used to circle all the coolest LEGO sets on toy catalogues in the hope of getting them for Christmas.
God I love how much even newer episodes still reek of the 2010's. it's like an internet history time capsule
That's because the 2010s ended not too long ago, it's only been 7 months since the 2020s started. It's going to take a while before it gets to that point where it doesn't feel like the 2010s anymore.
jerel I think he means like 2011 nerd
James has been doing this for so long that he, himself, is now retro.
@@gengarzilla1685 He knows this. In the Megaman episode, while traveling back in time through AVGN history, he eventually meets up with himself from the original Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hide episode. During that encounter when they're discussing the one Megaman game which came out in either 2007 or 2008. Can't remember off hand, but anyway he says, "Woah, I'm retro".
“The 2010s” jeez. Who’s nostalgic about the TWO THOUSAND TENS
I grew up with the nerd, and I'm honestly surprised he's still doing it. I'm not gonna leave a long-ass note for you, but rock on James!

I must say, that song at the end is pretty awesome. I’ve had “shitty games fallin outcher aAAasss” in my head for days
Fun fact: before dummies, car manufacturers used cadavers.
That would have made for some very interesting PSAs had dummies never been created.
The PSA's would've been even more cursed. Just imagine a noticeably dead person talking to you on tv about car safety...
Not to mention the toy line

After all these years, the LJN skit still makes me laugh.
Could the joke about Daryl be that he's the only one with a name that's not a car pun? Like Inky, Pinky, Blinky, and Clyde? Also, I need them to make a video about that vinyl record.
Well, then why not Jack? At least then, it'd be funny in a double meaning sense.
YES!!
I like to call that "the Pac-Man joke." A series of names or objects with super close relation ending with one that has no relation, meant for tiny shock humor.

The Nerd saying he was at one point into the Dummies as much as Ninja Turtles is so fun for me. I was also big into the toys as a kid. I remember genuinely being interested in the video game (I can't quite remember if I ever actually played it) so the Nerd reviewing it is a real treat.
I love how he now has the facial structure of a dad, but seemed to genuinely have fun playing with his crash test dummy toys.
He is a dad and nobody is too old to play with toys.

Fun Fact: Tim Follin is one the greatest vídeo game music composer, he created the music for Silver Surfer, Plok!, Solstice and other games made between the 80s and 90s.
Also hes still alive if you care about him
He also created an FMV game which is on Steam (Contradiction)
I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard a story once about how Shigeru Miyamoto couldn't believe that Plok's intro music could be made on an SNES sound chip
MW Brill Tim is well known for his technical achievements when he was making music.
I think they worked on the Wolverine Nes, and Spiderman and Xmen game on Snes.
I love the theme music of Solstice
i actually gasped when he revealed the LJN logo.

Vince and Larry started out as safety spokesmen, and became toys that you crash.
"You've become the very thing you swore to destroy."

The silver surfer NES game soundtrack on vinyl has to be the must obscure item on earth 😂
The cover art is killer.
tim follen is very famous now because of the internet. im sure its new and made for the badassery of it.
the theme slaps really slaps though
Arcade’s Revenge has a killer soundtrack, too. Gotta hunt down those records now.
Some of the music from “Silver Surfer” NES game were used in one of the episodes of the “MTN Gang”.
James should really do toy reviews from the 80s and 90s with his usual jokes
that was kinda the premise of board james.
@@PowerPuffBoysZ i guess, but that’s only games and he had a different character
I think this is my favorite nerd game destruction. The song really sells it.
Toy Company: "Any name ideas for the baby crash dummy?"
Marketing Consultant: "Skip the baby!!"
Toy Company: "Gotcha!"
LOL! I wouldn't be suprised if that were actually how they got the name! Though more deliberate, like the toy makers made that joke on purpose! Kinda like how in Rocko's Modern Life, when the executives told the team to create female character "with a good hook," they created a female character with a hook for a hand.
The baby was called "Skid the Kid"
“When would you see a crash dummy in a cannon?” I’m pretty sure the myth busters did it at some point.
Along with trying to launch said dummy into the air with a rocket propelled ming dynasty throne.
Well Buster is not your average Crash Test Dummy.
I think those dummies are meant for circuses to test their cannons.

SWEET MOTHER OF GOD...
7:00 I hope you know I waited the whole video for you to do an impression of this band. Thanks, James.
When you actually know what is under his fingers while holding the box because you too have been traumatized by LJN and can just feel their logo through solid objects.
I never had an LJN game as a kid. I was born in 92 and grew up with the SNES but no NES.
Even still, I predicted the LJN logo because I’ve seen enough AVGN episodes.
Fun fact, LJN started as a toy company. You can learn all about them in the Wrestlemania episode of 'The Toys that Made Us'.
I felt the pain...the pain of the LJN. 😥
I've only felt the secondhand trauma from the Nerd and I too knew exactly what he was gonna say... It's some aura of shit.
I didn’t know but laughed my ass off 😁😁
5:32 Holy crap, I remember I had Bull as a kid, and he was the dummy whose limbs you had to pull off manually, rather than the spring-loaded ones that eject with the button. When playing with my other action figures I'd always pretend he was the "friend of the good guys" who got slowly dismembered by the bad guy (usually Mr. Sinister), and that would motivate the good guys to eventually hunt down the bad guy at the end of my make-believe narrative. Good fricking times.
Good times indeed! I had the pickup truck that was meant for Bull. It had a spring-loaded axle that would cause a rollover accident. 😆 Crash dummies were my absolute favorite with Lego in a close 2nd.
Bull got "volunteered" for a lot of shit because of that. He's seen worse than Vietnam.
Love this story from your childhood
How to give AVGN an aneurysm:
1. Make a game
2. Slap the LJN logo on it
6:20 - This had me genuinely laughing out loud
AVGN: " When would you ever see a crash test dummy inside a f#*%ing cannon?
Me: "Mythbusters."

you should had known better from knowing it was an LJN Game
I started cracking up when you started singing lol. I always wanted those crash cars when i was a kid.
This is a really solid, well edited nerd episode. Honestly a classic example of the perfect episode formula: an interesting concept, a game many people don't know about published (of course) by LJN, a frustrating playthrough, and the cathartic destruction of the game at the end that brings us full circle thematically. Classic.
I'm in my early 40's, so that cover of "Crash" with the new lyrics was an unexpectedly awesome treat for me.

i understand your opinion about LJN but this game wasn't so bad
“How can we justify buying a bunch of crash test dummy toys? What if we did a video about that game. Brilliant”
If the crash dummies game was more like, say, Golden Axe it would have been better. I see it as a hack n slash game, not a platformer.
