Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 183: Ecco the Dolphin. Ecco is an action-adventure game originally developed by Ed Annunziata and Novotrade International for the Sega Genesis and published by Sega in 1992. The original game followed the exploits of a young dolphin named Ecco as he searched the seas, and eventually time itself, for his missing pod. The game is known for being super unique with a great art style, but it's also known for being hard, frustrating, and unfair.

11:34 That underwater (or is it underbeer) screaming was absolutely amazing.
Let’s make it “underbeer”😂😂😂
Im surprised that James didnt get into a drunken fight with a dolphin, over this game.
@Wavemaninawe

The scream from underbeer tho💀
11:42 him drinking beer can underwater in beer is pure SpongeBob logic.
You have to admit, for such a hard game, its soundtrack is VERY relaxing and eerie. And that goes double-no, TRIPLE-for the Sega CD version.
The game had great overall presentation. Tricked you into thinking it was going to be fun. I can't count how many times I played it hoping it would be enjoyable.
I had both fond and frustrating memories of this game. Soundtrack was very relaxing!! Got me through some rough times as a kid.
@@chaosdragon82 I started with the sequel. It feels like a fever dream, having rocked to giant squid tempo in the floating sky tubes.
I prefer the Genesis soundtrack to the Sega CD version.
I swear that this is a game like many others that could be remade to be so cool these days and very Ambien like you're saying it was to begin with. I feel like so many times we avoid making what could be a great game to remake a bunch of like for example why has there never been an open-world Ninja turtles game where you can drive the turtle van around and use all the turtles in to be like almost GTA style but PG-13 or something?
How does James Rolfe still look relatively the same age. I watched him when I was 14. Now I'm 30 🤣🤣
Which would make sense
Man must have the same magic Keanu Reeves had.
Jesus Christ has it been that long already?! 😅😅😅

Rolling Rock CEO: "Sales are way up again, but only in this one particular neighborhood. We're still not sure why."
No way they wouldn't know who the AVGN is!
I’m surprised Rolling Rock hasn’t made a deal with AVGN to supply him with unlimited beer
It's all water anyway
Reptilian Viking still have to buy the bottles though
If the geeks who gave us Rolling Rock are wondering why sales are so high all of a sudden, they need to look no further than a certain blatant nerd whose middle name is AVGN.
The echo of the dolphin's cry at the end will forever haunt me

I thought this was gonna be a theneedledrop sort of comment
@rudy nosa watch the episode
Can we all agree that moment when he was screaming in it pretty much sums up our feelings towards 2020?
unfortunate that we didnt get to see his reaction to the later levels where you travel through time and then swim through an alien spaceship to fight the xenomorph queen... AS A DOLPHIN
Don’t say that what he did was enough I wouldn’t wish any more of this game on anyone
Those levels are badass.
For real, the game has passwords, and he didn't use them? A shame -- this episode barely even scratched the surface of Ecco the Dolphin.
I actually really enjoyed this game and didn't have too much trouble with it when I was a kid. I like when you go back in time and have to fight ancient creatures.
It needs a second part!
The genius behind Ecco's oxigen-game-mechanic is the way it affects exploration. You need to balance your curiosity against your survival instinct. You slowly descend and look for objectives/air pockets then quickly shoot back to the surface always knowing its general direction (top) and combine it with a satisfying flip. It's such a great game-loop. The under-water environment also allowed for very interesting leveldesign, as you could literally move in any direction. I also love the atmoshpere of this game, so unique - wonderful art and music. In my opinion it is one of the greatest Action-Adventure-Games of that era - and Tides of Time even surpasses it.

The ending here is the most AVGN thing James has done in years, lol
I was coming down in the comments to say that! I guess he *hasn't* lost his touch! He was pretty tame and a little Flanderized in the beginning but that ending is amazing.

He didnt get that far
Its really hard to get there, and even there it is extremely frustrating to beat the final level. But I guess he could jump around using passwords
Thought the same thing.
Bit of a sloppy episode tbh, the final levels would be a goldmine and all he had to do was enter a password to get there.
If you speak French, look for the JDG take on this game, he did a way better episode, and he went to the end.
To make this game look bad

I still hope he will make a part 2 or a full on series. Maybe just a live stream series.
I remember being a kid at the video store and my dad would ALWAYS want to rent this game.
Actually, AVGN is right about the traumatizing part at the start. I played the game at a very young age and this made me scared of even looking at the startup screen. Years later I realized this game was about aliens, like Contra.
I love how he didn't even get to the end where he finds out there are aliens involved in the plot.
No but I did. Took me a long time but I did it.
Maybe he will mention it when he plays the dreamcast version one day ;)
Perhaps he'll do a follow-up episode like he did with Superman 64 and Sonic 06.
