This is episode 201 of the Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN), which starts off Season 16. The Nerd promised himself in 2006 to review The Last Ninja on NES one day, and today's the day! The Nerd learned during Episode 200 that bad games aren't really made to be bad, that developers probably have decent excuses and issues... but, will he cut The Last Ninja any slack?? -- The Last Ninja is an action-adventure game originally developed and published by System 3 in 1987 for the Commodore 64. But The Last Ninja on the Nintendo Entertainment System is actually the second game in the series Last Ninja 2: Back with a Vengeance.

Best episode in about 3 years!
i know right
It's just missing the intro song. Please bring back the intro song ♡
I won't lie, the thumbnail made me think it was a legit old episode that I had somehow missed in the past 15 years! Glad to see 201 starting with a classic nerd feeling! Hope it continues!
"classic nerd feeling" is loooooong gone!!!
@@UberMicroRepairs So you’d rather he ends the series.
For real I love the thumbnail. It really is like the ones from before. I love the hand drawn style
The most amazing is how almost acurate put the decoration ab furniture!!!
@@UberMicroRepairs why do you say that
9:56- I love how one of the Ninja’s main attacks is to repeatedly kick his opponent in the nuts, sending his opponent to the ground in the fetal position. Probably one of the most realistic things about this game.
LAST NINJA was originally designed for the Commodore 64, Amiga and MSDOS. It was meant to use a joystick for those difficult diagonal moves (not a joypad)

@@claudiasolomon1123 this is a remake of a sequel.
I can’t believe The Last Ninja called itself “Game of the Year”. Clearly, The Rocketeer on SNES was the best game of 1991.

"Written and Directed by James Rolfe" - it shows. This episode is brilliant
I'm glad to have him back, for real
I havent watched in a while. Were previous episodes/seasons not written and directed by him?
@@CrimeFighterFrog I don't think so
@@CrimeFighterFrog As far as I am aware, the other episodes werw written by him. I just know he has producers sometimes.
@@setsers1 that’s not say that those episodes aren’t bad, they do have their moments and are enjoyable, but I can see why people prefer the episodes that where entirely done by Rolfe
That fake lost episode at the beginning was actually pretty convincing lol, especially with the Mike Matei drawing in the thumbnail. I wouldn't mind seeing some new episodes in this style.
As for the rest, I feel like this might be a fresh start. James seems to be trying to bring back some of the classic elements, with wilder tangents, more anger and more chaos, not to mention that the lines feel more natural than the ones he did with a teleprompter, and that Mike's back. Here's hoping to more content like this.
exactly !
Heres to more!
I miss those thumbnails....
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.. and the return of earlier fun aspects that have been missing: the visit from video game or pop culture characters to f**k around with the nerd. This season promises a lot..
That interaction with AVGN and an Ernie doll was better than any movie from Hollywood. You could feel the tension there.
26:17 is one of the most simple but pure rage explosions and it’s beautiful.
2:40
I LOVE this little detail of AVGN saying “all over again” at the end of two sentences back-to-back. That’s an insane callback to the early days of these videos.
There's also more references, like the Superman video.
I love how this is supposed directly after the ninja turtles review and that’s where he did the “all over again” mess up
Only a real AVGN “old head” would notice this small detail. Cheers mate!
It’s 2022 and James releases a video that makes a strong argument of being the standard of a great AVGN episode. Love this and I hope it’s a sign of what’s to come.
Thank you James.

This video, has re-sparked that old feeling from the classic nerd era, EVERYTHING felt like an oldschool episode, the writing, the editing, the acting even having a random ass character popping up and beating the shit out of James, even hearing Mike's voice in an episode again really brought everything back, it hit EVERY beat of a classic episode and I really hope this wasn't just a once off because of the opening 5 minutes. James, if you can, PLEASE try and keep this up because this episode was GOLD and i loved every minute of it! More of this please! You Legend!
Yes! 100%
Absolutely.
Absolutely. The Ernie skit was killing me haha
This is a blessed episode! AVGN forever!
Let's go, Mr. James! A very well written, acted and produced masterpiece of an episode. He's still got it! P.S. Please do The Batman review for us fans. 💪😎

Glad to see Mike helping write the episode. Definitely can see his influence. I haven’t seen James have a genuine rage moment in years. Give me 3 episodes a year this well made and I can’t complain
i was thinking, that ending could only have come from the mind of Mutha Frigger Mike Matei
Agreed - James and Mike need each other. Mike has the gaming skills and knowledge, while James has the creativity to script it and direct it into a medium that is funny and relatable. They don’t work well without each other.
Agreed! I miss Mike! Haven't seen him in awhile!
Am i missing something. It says written by James. I can tell Mike did the title card, but write the ep?
Yes, huge improvement over the previous episode (even though, they were good). This feels like a classic AVGN. Mike added a lot to it for sure.
I love the thumbnail. Such a nice homage to the older thumbnails before getting changed into generic CZcams ones.
It is an old thumbnail. This is an old lost episode
@@aaronsanislo860 no it isn't lmao
In the description it says "help from Mike Matei" so that's definitely his.
As much as I like the older thumbnails, some of the new ones are better. It doesn't look like a child did it in MSPaint while snorting cheeto dust.
Take a look at his face. It's definitely something he made recently, he's just using old lighting and maybe the old cameras to recreate how he used to make Nerd videos
The part with Ernie had me cry laughing. Amazin episode.
Man, I love how this felt like a have to the older videos, it started off very calm, then spirled to old avgn greatness.

Man, Ernie was VERY serious about that highscore
Meanwhile, Bert died after Ernie drowned him in his favorite oatmeal. Afterwards, he fed Bernice (Bert's pet pigeon) to a snake.
It's amazing how just a few minor adjustments here and there really make this feel like such a wholesome retool. Towards the end I was thinking "all this needs to feel complete is a fight scene with a beloved childhood character," and wouldn't you know it...
Glad to see James took the feedback and decided to make a more classic style AVGN. Excellent episode!

I dont care what people say. James, you are still strong. You are one of the few original CZcamsrs that haven't been drawn by ''I want to stop because I wanna try new things'', ''I want a bigger career'', ''I want to become a publisher''. If people say you are outdated is their problem, the AVGN is still in our hearts and we will keep him there for as long you live.
@ghost mall James is one of the few original youtubers that are still around. Channels like Smosh, Jenna Marbles, =3, Pewdiepie all decided to go to other direction. Either for personal reasons or just right idiocy (Anthony leaving Smosh because he wanted to be more open, and Ray ending =3 because he wanted do more projects). For me James is the original youtuber comedic critic and we all own him a big thanks.
Porra mano, verdade

So nice to see an episode that feels like a classic one. From the choice of an NES game to the Mike Matei title card to the fight with Ernie at the end. Very well done. This is the Nerd that started a genre and captured a massive audience. He has been missed.
The throwback to the "All over again" repeating line is wonderful.
From where?
And the yellow hue throughout is wonderful.

Now all we need is AVGN killing Bert (and strangling his pet pigeon Bernice), beating up Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble (and killing Dino), then digging up the graves of Laurel and Hardy and blasting their ghosts with a proton pack).
Wow, he even brought back the classic title card thumbnail. This is definitely up there with the classic nerd episodes as one of the best. It felt like it was 2008 for a minute. Nostalgia was high on this jawn.
he even brought up sayin "all over again" multiple times whenever describing a hard part in the game which is a issue he had mentioned in the past that he was working on.

This might sound odd, but I actually like hearing the echo while the nerd is talking in the beginning. It also helps appreciate how improved these newer episodes are.
Noticed that and agree. It kinda connects to classic Nerd eps
Attention to detail
This ending felt spectacular. Closest the series has come yet to recapturing the magic of the old episodes.
The 4:3 aspect ratio, the lighting, the atmosphere, everything! He took us back to the past
This is now an essential AVGN episode for any rewatches
The ending with Ernie was probably one of the best things I've seen in years!
Ernie was the one who did the “Rubber Duckie” song which was the B-side to “Sesame Street”. I remember seeing the 45 of “Sesame Street” and “Rubber Duckie” on the flip.
Couldn't agree more! Great episode!
Muppets aren't usually that conductive.
I couldn't help but feel a little hurt by that as an ending.
The more something means something to you, the more insulted you may feel when you see him attacked in a brutal way. At least that's what I think.
It’s amazing that for a series entirely set around being angry, happy Nerd is one of the most wholesome people
You mean James.
8:06 The key is easy to pick up once you figure out that some items are easier to pick up when you do it from the right direction. It needs to be in front of your foot while facing southwest. Even if I didn't play the game for like a decade, that's still embedded in my spine.

Hello AVGN crew: everyone liked this. This is what we want. Thank you. This is an excellent episode
It's the story of how we played shitty games as a kid and - because we only had one game that we rented that weekend or whatever - we just had to keep struggling at absolute bullshit games. That's what we like, the "rage-filled narrative" that you (and we) experience when you play shitty games

"Be water, my friend..." 💪😎
I’m honestly so impressed with James’ self awareness - “When you knock them down, they get up all over again, so you gotta fight them all over again” I remember some video when James calls himself out on repeating words or phrases in his dialogue. So to see him bring that to light again makes me really happy. It’s minor - but I noticed hahahah!

I caught that straightaway, what a great Easter egg in the commentary.
This video was full of call backs to early Nerd episodes
So did I. Stuck out to me, like a sore thumb. 😆

"This ninja is probably the least stealthy ninja I've ever seen..."
I dunno, the Ninja Turtles had a van and a blimp.
*35 years* after the game released, yet *16 years* after the Nerd “promised” to review it 😅
Deep down my favourite AVGN bit is when he repeatedly fails to make a jump and just gets more and more frustrated. This game was setting him up for that so perfectly you'd think it was deliberate.
they foresaw the future.
That Zelda CD-I episode when he repeatedly fails the jump and launches F-Bombs all over the room is the best.
I like how during the last attempt the boat stops for a second after he falls in the water then starts moving again 😂 like the boat was taunting him
I thought for sure it was setting up for a "you can just walk over it," since the boat looked close enough you could get on it that way.
I missed the “crappier” looking title cards. We need to keep getting that art style back…
AVGN's anger when he lost it to Ernie was way more convincing than Hulk from Avengers
I see you slipping "Dr. Claw's Dump 'N Pump" into that list of games that came out in 1991...
Me towards the end: “This episode couldn’t get any better!”
Ernie: “Hold my rubber duckie…”
